Chapter 3

Solomon Asks for Wisdom. Solomon made a marriage alliance with Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, and he married Pharaoh’s daughter. He brought her into the City of David until he finished building his palace and the temple of the Lord and the walls surrounding Jerusalem.

[a]In the meantime, the people sacrificed upon the high places,[b] for a temple to the name of the Lord had not yet been built. Solomon loved the Lord, walking in the statutes of David his father, except that he sacrificed and burned incense upon the high places.

The king went to Gibeon to perform a sacrifice there, for that was an important high place. Solomon offered up one thousand burnt offerings upon that altar.

The Lord appeared to Solomon that night in a dream at Gibeon. God said, “Ask me for whatever you want.” Solomon answered, “You have shown great kindness to your servant, David, my father, because he walked before you in fidelity and righteousness. His heart was upright before you. You have even continued to show him this great kindness by having given him a son to sit upon his throne up to this very day. Now, O Lord, my God, you have established your servant as king in the place of David, my father, but I am only a small child and do not know how to go out and come in. Your servant is among the people you have chosen, a great people. There are so many of them that they cannot be numbered or counted. Therefore, give your servant a discerning heart to judge your people and to distinguish between what is good and what is bad, for who would be able to judge this, your great people?”

10 It pleased the Lord that Solomon had asked for this. 11 God said to him, “Because you have asked for this thing, and you have not asked for a long life for yourself, or that you be rich, or for the life of your enemies, but you asked for understanding to discern what is just, 12 behold, I am fulfilling your request. I will give you such a wise and understanding heart that there was never anyone like you before your times, nor will anyone like you rise up afterwards.[c]

13 “I will also give you those things for which you did not ask, both riches and honor, so that no other king will be like you as long as you live. 14 If you walk in my ways, keeping my statutes and commandments, just as David, your father, walked, then I will prolong your life.”

15 Solomon woke up, and it had been a dream. He went to Jerusalem and stood before the Ark of the Covenant of the Lord. He offered up burnt offerings and peace offerings, and he celebrated a feast with all his servants.

16 Solomon’s Wisdom. Now two prostitutes came to the king and stood before him. 17 One of the women said, “O my lord, I and this woman live in the same house. I had a child while this woman was in the house.

18 “Three days after I had my child, this woman also had a child. We were there together, and there was no one else with us in the house, only the two of us. 19 This woman’s child died during the night because she rolled over upon it. 20 She got up in the middle of the night, and she took my son from my side while your servant was asleep. She put him by her breast, and she put her dead son by my breast. 21 When I got up the next morning to nurse my son, he was dead. I examined him carefully in the morning, and behold, it was not the son whom I had borne.”

22 The other woman said, “No! My son is the living one; your son is the dead one!” The first woman said, “No! Your son is the dead one, and my son is the living one!” They argued this way before the king.

23 The king said, “The one says, ‘This is my son, the living one, and that is your son, the dead one,’ while the other one says, ‘No! Your son is dead, my son is alive.’ ” 24 The king said, “Bring me a sword.” So they brought a sword to the king. 25 The king said, “Divide the living child in two. Give one-half to one of them, and one-half to the other.”

26 The woman whose child was alive was moved to compassion for her son and she said to the king, “O my lord, give her the living child. Do not kill him!” But the other said, “Neither I nor you will have him. Cut him in two!”

27 The king then said, “Give her the living child. Do not kill him. She is his mother.” 28 When all of Israel heard about how the king had judged the case, they were filled with awe toward the king. They realized that he had the wisdom of God by the way he was able to judge properly.

Ephesians 1

Introduction

Chapter 1

Address and Greeting.[a] Paul, by the will of God an apostle of Christ Jesus, to the saints who are in Ephesus[b] and are faithful in Christ Jesus. Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

The Risen Christ, Lord and Savior of the Whole Human Race[c]

God’s Glorious Plan of Salvation[d]

Conceived by the Father

Blessed be the God,
and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
who has blessed us in Christ
with every spiritual blessing in the heavens.
Before the foundation of the world
he chose us in Christ
to be holy and blameless in his sight
and to be filled with love.
He predestined us
for adoption as his children
through Jesus Christ,
in accordance with his purpose and pleasure,
to the praise of the glory
of his grace
that he so freely bestowed on us
in the Beloved.

Realized by the Son

In Christ
and through his blood
we have redemption[e]
and the forgiveness of our sins.
In accord with the riches of his grace,
God lavished on us
all wisdom and insight.
He has made known to us
the mystery of his will
in accordance with his good pleasure
that he had predetermined in Christ
10 to be realized when
the fullness of time had been achieved:
namely, the plan to bring all things,
both in heaven and on earth,
together[f] in Christ
as the head.

Fulfilled by the Holy Spirit

11 In Christ we were also chosen,
    having been predestined
by the one who accomplishes all things
in accordance with the design of his will,
12 so that we,
who were the first ones
to place our hopes in Christ,
would devote ourselves
to the praise of his glory.
13 In Christ
you also heard the message of truth
and the gospel of your salvation,
and you came to believe in him.
In him,
you were marked with the seal
of the Holy Spirit
who had been promised.
14 That Spirit is the down payment[g] of our inheritance,
which we shall share
when God has redeemed us
as his own possession,
to the praise of his glory.

The Church’s Unity with Christ[h]

Christ, Head of the Church. Having heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and of your love toward all the saints, 16 I therefore never cease to give thanks to God for you as I remember you in my prayers. 17 I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation to know him.

18 I further pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened so that you may know the hope to which he has called you, how rich and glorious is his inheritance[i] in the saints, 19 and how immeasurably great is the power that he has exercised toward those who have faith.

Such was his mighty power 20 that he exhibited in Christ
when he raised him from the dead
and enthroned him
at his right hand in heaven,
21 far above
every principality and authority,
power and dominion,
and every other title
that can be named,
not only in this age
but also in the age to come.
22 He has put all things
under Christ’s feet
and has made him
the head of the Church,
23 which is his body,
the fullness of him
who fills the universe
in all its parts.

Ezekiel 34

Chapter 34[a]

The Shepherds of Israel.[b] This word of the Lord came to me: Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel. Prophesy and say to them: Thus says the Lord God: Woe to you shepherds of Israel. Prophesy and say to them: Thus says the Lord God: Woe to the shepherds of Israel who have been feeding themselves. Should not shepherds rather feed their flock?

You have fed on their milk, you have clothed yourselves with their wool, and you have slaughtered the fatlings, but you have not fed the sheep. You have not strengthened the weak, you have not healed the sick, and you have not bandaged those who were injured. Nor have you bothered to bring back those who strayed or searched for the lost. On the contrary, you have ruled them with cruelty and harshness.

Therefore, they were scattered for lack of a shepherd, and thus they became the prey of all the wild beasts. My sheep were scattered, wandering aimlessly over all the mountains and on every high hill. My flock has been scattered over the entire world, with no one to inquire about them or search for them.

Therefore, you shepherds, hear the word of the Lord: As I live, says the Lord God, because my sheep are without a shepherd and thus have been ravaged and have become food for all the wild animals, and because my shepherds have not gone forth in search of my sheep, but have fed themselves and not been concerned about feeding my sheep, therefore, you shepherds, hear the word of the Lord.

10 Thus says the Lord God: I intend to punish the shepherds. I will remove the sheep from their charge and not allow them to feed the flock. As a result, the shepherds will no longer be able to feed themselves. I will rescue my sheep from their mouths so that they will no longer use them for their food.

11 [c]For thus says the Lord God: I myself will search for my sheep and look after them. 12 As a shepherd goes forth in search of his flocks when they are scattered from him in every direction, so I will go forth in search of my sheep. I will retrieve them from all the places to which they have been scattered on a day of clouds and darkness.

13 I will bring them back from among the peoples and gather them from foreign lands, I will lead them back to their own land and pasture them on the mountains of Israel, in the ravines, and in all the inhabited areas of the country. 14 I will feed them in fertile pastures, and the mountain heights of Israel will be their grazing grounds. There they will lie down on good grazing land and feed in rich pastures on the mountains of Israel.

15 I, myself, will pasture my sheep, and I, myself, will give them rest, says the Lord God. 16 I will search for those who are lost; I will bring back those who have strayed away. I will bind up the injured and strengthen the weak, but the fat and the strong, I will destroy. I will shepherd my flock with justice.

17 Judgment of the Sheep.[d]As for you, my flock, the Lord God says this: I will judge between one sheep and another, between rams and goats. 18 Is it not sufficient for you to graze on the best pasture land? Must you also trample with your feet on the rest of the pastures? Is it not enough for you to drink clear water? Must you also foul the rest with your feet? 19 As a result, my sheep must graze on what you have trampled underfoot and drink what you have befouled with your feet.

20 Therefore, thus says the Lord God to them: I myself will judge between the fat sheep and the lean sheep. 21 Because you have shoved with flank and shoulder and butted all the weak sheep with your horns until you have scattered them in every direction, 22 I will save my flock, and they will never again be treated unfairly. I will judge between one sheep and another.

23 [e]I will raise up one shepherd, my servant David, to care for them. He shall feed them and be their shepherd. 24 I, the Lord, will be their God, and my servant David will be a prince in their midst. I, the Lord, have spoken.

25 I will make a covenant of peace with them and rid the land of wild animals so that they may live in the desert and sleep in the woods free from danger. 26 I will make them and the region surrounding my hill a blessing, and I will send them rain in due season that will be showers of blessing.

27 The trees of the field shall bear their fruit, and the soil will yield its crops. My people will be secure on their own soil and they will know that I am the Lord when I break the bars of their yoke and rescue them from the power of those who enslaved them.

28 They will no longer be plundered by the nations or devoured by the wild animals of the land. They will live in safety, and no one ever again will terrify them. 29 I will make their land bring forth abundant crops so that they will never again be the victims of famine or have to suffer the insults of the nations.

30 Thus, they will be assured that I, the Lord, their God, am with them, and that they, the house of Israel, are my people, says the Lord God. 31 You are my sheep, the sheep of my pasture, and I am your God, says the Lord God.

Psalm 83-84

Psalm 83[a]

Against a Hostile Alliance

A song. A psalm of Asaph.[b]

O God, do not remain silent;[c]
do not be quiet and inactive, O God.
[d]Note how your enemies rage about,
how your foes increase in arrogance.[e]
They formulate shrewd plans against your people,
    conspiring against those you love.
They say, “Come, let us wipe them out as a nation;
let the name of Israel be totally forgotten.”
They conspire with a single mind,
    forming an alliance[f] against you:
[g]the tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites,
    Moab and the Hagrites,
Gebal, Ammon, and Amalek,
    Philistia, and the inhabitants of Tyre;
Assyria has also joined them as an ally,
offering aid to the descendants of Lot. Selah
10 [h]Deal with them as you did with Midian,[i]
and with Sisera and Jabin at the brook of Kishon,[j]
11 who were destroyed at Endor
and became manure for the ground.
12 [k]Make their chieftains like Oreb and Zeeb,
and all their princes like Zebah and Zalmunna,
13 who boasted, “Let us seize for ourselves
    the pastures of God.”
14 [l]O my God, treat them like tumbleweed,
like chaff blown before the wind.
15 As a fire rages through a forest,
as a flame sets mountains ablaze,
16 so hound them with your tempests
and terrify them with your stormwinds.[m]
17 Fill their faces with shame
so that they will seek your name,[n]Lord.
18 [o]Let them be humiliated and terrified forever;
let them be disgraced and perish.
19 Let them know that you alone,
    whose name is the Lord,
are the Most High over all the earth.

Psalm 84[p]

Longing for God’s Dwelling

For the director.[q] “Upon the gittith.” A psalm of the sons of Korah.

How lovely is your dwelling place,
    Lord of hosts.[r]
My soul yearns and is filled with longing
for the courts of the Lord.
My heart and my flesh cry out
    for the living God.
Just as the sparrow searches for a home
and the swallow builds a nest for herself
where she may place her young,
so do I seek your altars,[s]
Lord of hosts, my King and my God.
Blessed[t] are those who dwell in your house;
they offer continuous praise to you. Selah
Blessed are those who find strength in you,
who set their hearts upon your ways.[u]
As they pass through the Valley of Baca,
they turn it into a region of springs,
and the early rain covers it with pools.[v]
[w]They move forward with increasing strength
as they behold the God of gods in Zion.
Lord of hosts, hear my prayer;
listen to my pleas, O God of Jacob. Selah
10 O God, look upon our shield[x]
behold the face of your anointed one.
11 It is better to spend one day in your courts
    than a thousand elsewhere.
I would rather be a doorkeeper[y] in God’s house
than dwell inside the tents of the wicked.
12 The Lord God serves as our sun[z] and our shield;
the Lord showers us with grace and glory.
He does not withhold any good thing
from those who walk in integrity.
13 Lord of hosts,
blessed is the man who puts his trust in you.
