M’Cheyne Bible Reading Plan
9 1 All Israel and Judah numbered. 10 Of the Priests and Levites, 11, 18 And of their offices.
1 Thus all Israel were numbered by their genealogies: and behold, they are written in the book of the Kings of Israel and of Judah, and they were [a]carried away to Babel for their transgression.
2 ¶ And the chief inhabitants that dwelt in their own possessions, and in their own cities, even Israel, the Priests, the Levites, and the [b]Nethinim.
3 And in Jerusalem dwelt of the children of Judah, and of the children of Benjamin, and of the children of Ephraim, and Manasseh.
4 Uthai the son of Ammihud the son of Omri, the son of Imri, the son of Bani, of the children of Perez, the son of Judah.
5 And of Shiloni, Asaiah the eldest, and his sons.
6 And the sons of Zerah, Jeuel, and their brethren six hundred and ninety.
7 And of the sons of Benjamin, Sallu, the son of Meshullam, the son of Hodaviah, the son of Hassenuah.
8 And Ibneiah the son of Jeroham, and Elah the son of Uzzi, the son of Michri, and Meshullam the son of Shephatiah, the son of Reuel the son of Ibnijah.
9 And their brethren according to their generations nine hundred, fifty and six: all these men were [c]chief fathers in the households of their fathers.
10 ¶ And of the Priests, Jedaiah, and Jehoiarib, and Jachin,
11 And Azariah the son of Hilkiah, the son of Meshullam, the son of Zadok, the son of Meraioth, the son of Ahitub the [d]chief of the house of God,
12 And Adaiah the son of Jeroham, the son of Pashur, the son of Malchijah, and Maasai the son of Adiel, the son of Jahzerah, the son of Meshullam, the son of Meshillemith, the son of Immer.
13 And their brethren the chief of the households of their fathers, a thousand seven hundred and threescore valiant men, for the [e]work of the service of the house of God.
14 ¶ And of the Levites, Shemaiah the son of Hasshub, the son of Azrikam, the son of Hashabiah, of the sons of Merari,
15 And Bakbakkar, Heresh and Galal, and Mattaniah the son of Micah, the son of Zichri, the son of Asaph,
16 And Obadiah the son of Shemaiah, the son of Galal, the son of Jeduthun, and Berechiah the son of Asa, the son of Elkanah, that dwelt in the villages of the Netophathites.
17 And the porters were Shallum, and Akkub, and Talmon, and Ahiman, and their brethren: Shallum was the chief.
18 For they were porters to this time by companies of the children of Levi unto the [f]King’s gate Eastward.
19 And Shallum the son of Kore the son of Ebiasaph the son of Korah, and his brethren the Korahites (of the house of their father) were over the work, and office to keep the gates of the [g]Tabernacle: so their families were over the host of the Lord keeping the entry.
20 And Phinehas the son of Eleazar was their guide, and the Lord was with him.
21 Zechariah the son of Meshelemiah was the porter of the door of the Tabernacle of the Congregation.
22 All these were chosen for porters of the gates, two hundred and twelve, which were numbered according to their genealogies by their towns. David established these, and Samuel the Seer [h]in their perpetual office.
23 So they and their children had the oversight of the gates of the house of the Lord, even of the house of the Tabernacle by wards.
24 The porters were in four quarters Eastward, Westward, Northward and Southward.
25 And their brethren, which were in their towns, came at [i]seven days from time to time with them.
26 For these four chief porters were in perpetual office, and were of the Levites, and had charge of the [j]chambers, and of the treasures in the house of God.
27 And they lay round about the house of God, because the charge was theirs, and they caused it to be opened every morning.
28 And certain of them had the rule of the ministering vessels: for they brought them in by tally, and brought them out by tally.
29 Some of them also were appointed over the instruments, and over all the vessels of the Sanctuary, and of the [k]flour, and the wine, and the oil, and the incense, and the sweet odors.
30 And certain of the sons of the Priests made ointments of sweet odors.
31 And Mattithiah one of the Levites which was the eldest son of Shallum the Korahite, had the charge of the things that were made in the frying pan.
32 And other of their brethren the sons of Kohath had the oversight of the (A)showbread to prepare it every Sabbath.
33 And these are the singers, the chief fathers of the Levites, which dwelt in the chambers, [l]and had none other charge: for they had to do in that business day and night.
34 These were the chief fathers of the Levites according to their generations, and the principal which dwelt at Jerusalem.
35 (B)And in Gibeon dwelt [m]the father of Gibeon, Jeiel, and the name of his wife was Maachah.
36 And his eldest son was Abdon, then Zur, and Kish, and Baal, and Ner, and Nadab,
37 And Gedor, and Ahio, and Zechariah, and Mikloth.
38 And Mikloth begat Shimeam: they also dwelt with their brethren at Jerusalem, even by their brethren.
39 And (C)Ner begat Kish, and Kish begat Saul, and Saul begat Jonathan, and Malchishua, and Abinadab and Esh-Baal.
40 And the son of Jonathan was Merib-Baal, and Merib-Baal begat Micah.
41 And the sons of Micah were Pithon, and Melech and Tahrea.
42 And Ahaz begat [n]Jarah, and Jarah begat Alemeth, and Azmaveth, and Zimri, and Zimri begat Moza.
43 And Moza begat Binea, whose son was Rephaiah, and his son was Eleasah, and his son Azel.
44 And Azel had six sons, whose names are these, Azrikam, Bocheru, and Ismael, and Sheariah, and Obadiah, and Hanan: these are the sons of Azel.
10 1 The battle of Saul against the Philistines, 4 In which he dieth, 6 And his sons also. 13 The cause of Saul’s death.
1 Then (D)the Philistines fought against Israel, and the men of Israel fled before the Philistines, and fell down slain in mount Gilboa.
2 And the Philistines pursued after Saul and after his sons, and the Philistines smote Jonathan, and Abinadab, and Malchishua the sons of Saul.
3 And the battle was sore against Saul, and the archers [o]hit him, and he was wounded of the archers.
4 Then said Saul to his armor-bearer, Draw out thy sword, and thrust me through therewith, lest these uncircumcised come and mock at me: but his armor-bearer would not, for he was sore afraid: therefore Saul took the sword, and fell upon it.
5 And when his armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he fell likewise upon the sword, and died.
6 So Saul died, and his three sons, and all his house, they died together.
7 And when all the men of Israel that were in the valley, saw how they fled, and that Saul and his sons were dead, they forsook their cities and fled away, and the Philistines came and dwelt in them.
8 And on the morrow when the Philistines came to spoil them that were slain, they found Saul and his sons [p]lying in mount Gilboa.
9 And when they had stripped him, they took his head and his armor, and sent them into the land of the Philistines round about, to publish it unto their idols, and to the people.
10 And they laid up his armor in the house of their god, and set up his head in the house of [q]Dagon.
11 ¶ When all they of Jabesh Gilead heard all that the Philistines had done to Saul,
12 Then they arose (all the valiant men) and took the body of Saul, and the bodies of his sons, and brought them to Jabesh, and buried the bones of them under an oak in Jabesh, and fasted seven days.
13 So Saul died for his transgression that he committed against the Lord, (E)even against the word of the Lord which he kept not, and in that he sought and asked counsel of a [r](F)familiar spirit,
14 And asked not of the Lord: therefore he slew him, and turned the kingdom unto David the son of Jesse.
12 1 He doth not only by the examples of the Fathers before recited, exhort them to patience and constancy, 3 but also by the example of Christ. 11 That the chastenings of God cannot be rightly judged by the outward sense of our flesh.
1 Wherefore, (A)[a]let us also, seeing that we are compassed with so great a cloud of witnesses, cast away everything that presseth down, and the sin that [b]hangeth so fast on: let us run with patience the race that is set before us,
2 [c][d]Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith, who for the [e]joy that was set before him, endured the cross, and despised the shame, and is set at the right hand of the throne of God.
3 [f]Consider therefore him that endureth such speaking against of sinners, lest ye should be wearied and faint in your minds.
4 [g]Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin.
5 [h]And ye have forgotten the consolation, which speaketh unto you as unto children, (B)My son, despise not the chastening of the Lord, neither faint when thou art rebuked of him.
6 For whom the Lord loveth, he chasteneth: and he scourgeth every son that he receiveth.
7 If ye endure chastening, God offered himself unto you as unto sons: for what son is it whom the father chasteneth not?
8 If therefore ye be without correction, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.
9 [i]Moreover we have had the fathers of our bodies which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: should we not much rather be in subjection unto the father of spirits, that we might live?
10 [j]For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure, but he chastened us for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness.
11 Now no chastising for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: but afterward, it bringeth the quiet fruit of righteousness, unto them which are thereby exercised.
12 [k]Wherefore lift up your hands which [l]hang down, and your weak knees,
13 And make [m]straight steps unto your feet, lest that which is halting, be turned out of the way, but let it rather be healed.
14 (C)[n]Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without the which no man shall see the Lord.
15 [o]Take heed, that no man fall away from the grace of God: let no [p]root of bitterness spring up and trouble you, lest thereby many be defiled.
16 [q]Let there be no fornicator, or profane person as (D)Esau, which for one portion of meat sold his birthright.
17 (E)For ye know how that afterward also when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no [r]place to repentance, though he sought that blessing with tears.
18 [s]For ye are not come unto the (F)mount that might be [t]touched, nor unto burning fire, nor to blackness and darkness, and tempest,
19 Neither unto the sound of a trumpet, and the voice of words, which they that heard it, excused themselves, (G)that the word should not be spoken to them any more.
20 (For they were not able to abide that which was commanded, (H)yea, though a beast touch the mountain, it shall be stoned, or thrust through with a dart:
21 And so terrible was the [u]sight which appeared, that Moses said, I fear and quake.)
22 But ye are come unto the mount Sion, and to the city of the living God, the celestial Jerusalem, and to the company of innumerable Angels.
23 And to the assembly and congregation of the first born, which are written in heaven, and to God the judge of all, and to the spirits of just and [v]perfect men,
24 And to Jesus the Mediator of the new Testament, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaketh better things than that of Abel.
25 [w]See that ye despise not him that speaketh: for if they escaped not which refused him, that spake on earth: much more shall we not escape, if we turn away from him that speaketh from heaven.
26 [x]Whose voice then shook the earth, and now hath declared, saying, (I)Yet [y]once more will I shake, not the earth only, but also heaven.
27 And this word, Yet once more, signifieth the removing of those things which are shaken, as of things which are made with hands, that the things which are not shaken, may remain.
28 [z]Wherefore seeing we receive a kingdom, which cannot be shaken, let us have grace whereby we may so serve God, that we may please him with [aa]reverence and [ab]fear.
29 For (J)even our God is a consuming fire.
6 Against the princes of Israel living in pleasure.
1 Woe to [a]them that are at ease in Zion, and trust in the mountain of Samaria, [b]which were famous at the beginning of the nations: and the house of Israel came to them.
2 Go you unto Calneh, and see: and from thence go you to Hamath the great: then go down to Gath of the Philistines: be [c]they better than these kingdoms? or the border of their land greater than your border,
3 Ye that put far away the [d]evil day, and approach to the seat of iniquity?
4 They lie upon beds of ivory, and stretch themselves upon their beds, and eat the lambs of the flock, and the calves out of the stall.
5 They sing to the sound of the viol: they invent to themselves instruments of music like [e]David.
6 They drink wine in bowls, and anoint themselves with the chief ointments, but no man is [f]sorry for the affliction of Joseph.
7 Therefore now shall they go captive with the first that go captive, and [g]the sorrow of them that stretched themselves, is at hand.
8 [h]The Lord God hath sworn by himself, saith the Lord God of hosts, I abhor [i]the excellency of Jacob, and hate his palaces: therefore will I deliver up the city with all that is therein.
9 And if there remain ten men in one house, they shall die.
10 And his uncle [j]shall take him up and burn him, to carry out the bones out of the house, and shall say unto him, that is by the [k]sides of the house, Is there yet any with thee? And he shall say, None. Then shall he say, [l]Hold thy tongue: for we may not remember the Name of the Lord.
11 For behold, the Lord commandeth, and he will smite the great house with breaches, and the little house with clefts.
12 Shall horses [m]run upon the rock? or will one plow there with oxen? for ye have turned judgment into gall, and the fruit of righteousness into [n]wormwood.
13 Yet rejoice in a thing of nought: ye say, Have not we gotten us [o]horns by our own strength?
14 But behold, I will raise up against you a nation, O house of Israel, saith the Lord God of hosts: and they shall afflict you from the entering in of [p]Hamath unto the river of the wilderness.
39 ¶ [a]And Mary arose in those days, and went into the [b]hill country with haste to a [c]city of Judah,
40 And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elizabeth.
41 And it came to pass, as Elizabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe [d]sprang in her belly, and Elizabeth was filled with the holy Ghost.
42 And she cried with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, because [e]the fruit of thy womb is blessed.
43 And whence cometh this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
44 For lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe sprang in my belly for joy.
45 And blessed is she that believed: for those things shall be performed, which were told her from the Lord.
46 [f]Then Mary said, My soul magnifieth the Lord,
47 And my spirit rejoiceth in God my Savior.
48 For he hath [g]looked on the [h]poor degree of his servant: for behold, from henceforth shall all ages call me blessed,
49 Because he that is mighty hath done for me great things, and holy is his Name.
50 And his mercy is from generation to generation on them [i]that fear him.
51 (A)He that showed strength with his [j]arm: (B)he hath [k]scattered the proud in the [l]imagination of their hearts.
52 (C)He hath [m]put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of [n]low degree.
53 (D)He hath filled the [o]hungry with good things, and sent away the rich empty.
54 [p](E)He hath upholden Israel his servant to be mindful of his mercy,
55 ((F)As he hath [q]spoken to our fathers, to wit, to Abraham and his seed) forever.
56 ¶ And Mary abode with her about three months: after, she returned to her own house.
57 ¶ [r]Now Elizabeth’s time was fulfilled, that she should be delivered, and she brought forth a son.
58 And her neighbors and cousins heard tell how the Lord had showed his great mercy upon her, and they (G)rejoiced with her.
59 And it was so that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the babe, and called him Zacharias, after the name of his father.
60 But his mother answered, and said, Not so, but he shall be called John.
61 And they said unto her, There is none of thy kindred that is named with this name.
62 Then they made signs to his father, how he would have him called.
63 So he asked for writing tablets, and wrote, saying, His name is John, and they marveled all.
64 And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue, [s]and he spake and praised God.
65 Then fear came on all them that dwelt near unto them, and all [t]these words were noised abroad throughout all the hill country of Judea.
66 And all they that heard them, [u]laid them up in their hearts, saying, What manner child shall this be! and the [v]hand of the Lord was with him.
67 [w]Then his father Zacharias was filled with the holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying,
68 Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, because he hath [x]visited (H)and [y]redeemed his people,
69 (I)And hath raised up the [z]horn of salvation unto us, in the house of his servant David,
70 (J)As he spake by the mouth of his holy Prophets, which were since the world began, saying,
71 That he would send us deliverance from our enemies, and from the hands of all that hate us,
72 That he might show mercy towards our fathers: and [aa]remember his holy covenant,
73 (K)And the oath, which he sware to our father Abraham.
74 Which was, that he would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hands of our enemies, should serve him without fear,
75 All the days of our life, in (L)holiness and righteousness [ab]before him.
76 And thou, [ac]babe, shalt be called the Prophet of the most High: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways,
77 And to [ad]give knowledge of salvation unto his people, by the [ae]remission of their sins,
78 Through the tender mercy of our God, whereby (M)the [af]dayspring from on high hath visited us,
79 To give light to them that sit in darkness, and in the shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the way of [ag]peace.
80 And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the wilderness, till the day came that he should show himself unto Israel.
