1 Samuel 18

The Friendship of David and Jonathan

18 When[a] he finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan became attached to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. Saul took him on that very day and did not allow him to return to his father’s house. Then Jonathan made a covenant with David, because he loved him as his own soul. Jonathan stripped off the robe that he was wearing[b] and gave it to David, along with his fighting attire,[c] and even his sword, his bow, and his belt.

David’s Successes Arouse Saul’s Suspicions

David went out whenever[d] Saul sent him, and he succeeded. So Saul appointed him over the men of the war, and it pleased[e] all the people and even pleased[f] the servants of Saul. When they were coming back[g] after David had returned from striking down the Philistine, the women went out from all the cities of Israel singing and dancing to meet King Saul with tambourines, with joy, and with three-stringed instruments. And the women sang as they danced, and they said,

“Saul has struck down his thousands,
    but David his ten thousands!”

Saul became very angry,[h] and this saying displeased him,[i] and he thought, “They have attributed to David ten thousands, but to me they have attributed thousands! What more can he have but the kingdom?”[j] So Saul was watching[k] David with suspicion from that day onward.

10 On[l] the next day, the evil spirit from God rushed upon Saul, and he prophesied in the middle of the house. Now David was playing the lyre with his hand on that day as usual,[m] and the spear was in Saul’s hand. 11 Then Saul hurled the spear and thought, “I will pin David to the wall.”[n] But David eluded him twice. 12 Now Saul was threatened by the presence of David[o] because Yahweh was with him, but had departed from Saul. 13 So Saul removed him from his presence,[p] and made him commander of a thousand, so he[q] marched in and out at the front of the army.[r] 14 And David was achieving success in all his ways and Yahweh was with him, 15 but when Saul saw that he was very successful, he was severely threatened by him.[s] 16 However, all of Israel and Judah were loving David, for he was going forth and marching ahead of them.

David Marries Saul’s Daughter Michal

17 Then Saul said to David, “Here is my older daughter Merab. I will give her to you as your wife. Only be a brave warrior[t] for me and fight the battles of Yahweh.” For Saul thought, “My hand will not be against him, but let the hand of the Philistines be against him.” 18 But David said to Saul, “Who am I, and who are my relatives, the clan of my father in Israel, that I should be a son-in-law to the king?” 19 But[u] at the time Saul’s daughter Merab was to be given to David, she was given instead to Adriel the Meholathite as wife.

20 Now Saul’s daughter Michal loved David, so they told Saul, and the matter pleased him.[v] 21 And Saul thought, “I will give her to him, so that she may be a snare for him and the hand of the Philistines may be against him.” So Saul said to David, “For a second time you can become my son-in-law today.” 22 Then Saul commanded his servants, “Speak to David in secret, saying, ‘Look, the king is pleased with you, and all his servants love you. So then, become a son-in-law of the king.’” 23 And Saul’s servants spoke these words to David privately.[w] But David said, “Is it insignificant in your sight[x] to become the son-in-law of the king, as I am a poor and lightly esteemed man?” 24 So the servants of Saul informed him, saying, “This is what David said.”[y] 25 Then Saul said, “This is what you must say to David: ‘The king desires no bride price[z] except for a hundred foreskins of the Philistines, to avenge himself on the enemies of the king.’” (Now Saul had planned to allow David to fall by the hand of the Philistines.) 26 So his servants told David these words, and the matter pleased David[aa] to become the son-in-law of the king as the specified time had not expired.[ab]

27 And David got up, and he and his men went and struck down two hundred men of the Philistines. Then David brought their foreskins, and they presented the full number[ac] to become the king’s son-in-law. Then Saul gave him Michal his daughter as his wife. 28 When Saul realized[ad] that Yahweh was with David and his own daughter Michal[ae] loved him, 29 Saul was threatened by David still more,[af] so Saul became a perpetual enemy of David.[ag] 30 Then the commanders of the Philistines went out for battle, and as often as they went out, David succeeded more than all the servants of Saul, and his name became very esteemed.

Romans 16

Many Personal Greetings

16 Now I commend to you Phoebe our sister, who is also a servant[a] of the church in Cenchrea, in order that you may welcome her in the Lord in a manner worthy of the saints, and help her in whatever task she may have need from you, for she herself also has been a helper of many, even me myself.

Greet Prisca and Aquila, my fellow workers in Christ Jesus, who risked their own necks for my life, for which not only I am thankful, but also all the churches of the Gentiles; also greet[b] the church in their house. Greet Epenetus my dear friend, who is the first convert[c] of Asia for Christ. Greet Mary, who has worked hard[d] for you. Greet Andronicus and Junia,[e] my compatriots[f] and my fellow prisoners, who are well known to[g] the apostles, who were also in Christ before me. Greet Ampliatus, my dear friend in the Lord. Greet Urbanus, our fellow worker in Christ, and my dear friend Stachys. 10 Greet Apelles, who is approved in Christ. Greet those of the household of Aristobulus. 11 Greet Herodion my compatriot.[h] Greet those of the household of Narcissus who are in the Lord. 12 Greet Tryphena and Tryphosa, the laborers in the Lord. Greet Persis, the dear friend who has worked hard[i] in the Lord. 13 Greet Rufus, the chosen one in the Lord, and his mother and mine. 14 Greet Asyncritus, Phlegon, Hermes, Patrobas, Hermas, and the brothers with them. 15 Greet Philologus and Julia, Nereus and his sister, and Olympas, and all the saints who are with them. 16 Greet one another with a holy kiss. All the churches of Christ greet you.

Concluding Exhortations

17 Now I exhort you, brothers, to look out for those who cause dissensions and temptations contrary to the teaching which you learned, and stay away from them. 18 For such people do not serve our Lord Christ, but their own stomach, and by smooth speech and flattery they deceive the hearts of the unsuspecting. 19 For the report of your obedience has reached to all; therefore I am rejoicing over you, and I want you to be wise toward what is good, but innocent toward what is evil. 20 And in a short time the God of peace will crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ[j] be with you.

Greetings from Paul’s Associates

21 Timothy, my fellow worker, greets you, and Lucius and Jason and Sosipater, my compatriots.[k]

22 I, Tertius, the one who wrote this letter, greet you in the Lord.

23 Gaius, my host and the host of the whole church, greets you. Erastus the city treasurer greets you, and Quartus the brother.

Benediction

24 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with all of you. Amen.[l]

Lamentations 3

Israel’s Affliction

I am a man who has seen misery,
under the rod of his wrath.
He has driven me along, he brought
    darkness and not light.
Surely he has turned his hand against me,
    all day long.
He has worn out my flesh and skin,
    he has broken my bones.
He has besieged[a] and engulfed me
    with bitterness and hardship.
In darkness he has let me dwell
    like the dead of long ago.
He has built a wall around me, I cannot go out;
    he has made my bronze fetters heavy.
Though I cry out for help,
    he shuts out my prayers.
He has blocked my ways with dressed stones;
    he has made my paths crooked.
10 To me he is like a bear lying in wait,
    a lion in hiding.
11 He has forsaken my way and torn me to pieces;
    he has caused me desolation.
12 He has bent his bow and set me
    as the target for the arrow.
13 He shot the arrows of his quiver[b]
    into my kidneys.
14 I have become a laughingstock for all the people,
    their mocking song all day long.
15 He has filled me with bitterness,
    he has drenched me with wormwood.
16 He has broken my teeth on grit,
    he has trampled me down in ash.
17 My life has been removed from peace,
    I have forgotten goodness.
18 And I have said, “My glory is ruined,
    my expectation from Yahweh.”
19 Remember my misery and bitterness,
    the wormwood[c] and venom!
20 Surely my soul remembers
    and bows down within me.
21 This I have reminded myself,[d]
    therefore I will hope.
22 The loyal love of Yahweh does not cease;
    his compassions do not come to an end.
23 They are new in the morning,
    great is your faithfulness.
24 “Yahweh is my portion,”
    says my soul,
        “Thus I will hope on him.”
25 Yahweh is good to those who wait on him,
    to the person that seeks him.
26 It is good to wait in silence
    for the salvation of Yahweh.
27 It is good for a man who carries
    the yoke of his childhood.
28 Let him sit alone and be silent
    when he[e] has laid it on him.
29 Let him put[f] his mouth in the dust;
    perhaps there is hope.
30 Let him give a cheek to his smiter,
    let him be filled with disgrace.
31 For the Lord will not reject
    forever.
32 For even though he causes grief he has compassion
    according to the greatness of his royal love.
33 He does not afflict willingly,[g]
    or grieve anyone.[h]
34 To crush under his feet
    all the prisoners of the earth;
35 to deprive one of justice[i]
    before the face of the Most High;
36 to subvert a person in a legal dispute
    —the Lord has not found delight in these things.
37 Who can speak[j] and it will happen
    if the Lord has not commanded it?
38 Is it not from the mouth of the Most High
    that disaster and good will come?
39 Why should any living person complain
    about his sin?
40 Let us test and examine our ways;
    let us return to Yahweh.
41 Let us lift up our hearts with our hands
    to God in the heavens.
42 We ourselves have transgressed and rebelled,
    you have not forgiven.
43 You have covered yourself in anger[k] and pursued us,
    you have slain and not shown mercy.
44 You have covered yourself in a cloud
    so that prayer cannot pass through.[l]
45 You have made us scum and refuse
    in the midst of the nations.
46 All our enemies
    have opened their mouth against us.
47 Fear and a pit have come upon us,
    desolation and destruction.
48 Channels of water run down my eyes
    because of the destruction of the daughter of my people.
49 My eyes have poured down unceasingly
    without respite,
50 until Yahweh looks down
    and sees from heaven.
51 My eyes inflict my soul
    because of all the daughters of my city.
52 My enemies hunt me without cause,
    like a bird.
53 They have silenced me in a pit,[m]
    they have thrown a stone at me.
54 Water has flown over my head,
    I said, “I am cut off.”
55 I have called your name, O Yahweh,
    from the depths of the pit.
56 You have heard my cry, “Do not shut your ear
    to my cry for help, for my relief!”
57 You came near on a day when I called you,
    you said, “Do not fear!”
58 O Lord, you have pleaded for my cause,[n]
    you have redeemed my life.
59 You have seen my injustice, O Yahweh;
    judge my case.
60 You have seen all their vengeance,
    all there plans against me.
61 You have heard their disgrace, O Yahweh,
    all their plans against me.
62 The lips and meditation of my assailants
    are against me all day long.
63 Look at their sitting and their standing,
    I am their mocking song.
64 Return to them what is deserved, O Yahweh,
    according to the work of their hands.
65 Give them a stubborn heart;
    curse them!
66 Pursue them in anger[o] and destroy them
    from under the heavens of Yahweh.

Psalm 34

Thanksgiving for Yahweh’s Deliverance

Of David, when he pretended to be crazy[a] in front of Abimelech[b]

so that he drove him out, and so he departed.[c]

34 I will bless Yahweh at all times;
his praise shall be in my mouth continually.
My soul makes its boast in Yahweh;
let the humble hear and be glad.
Magnify Yahweh with me,
and let us exalt his name together.
I sought Yahweh and he answered me,
and from all my terrors he delivered me.
They looked to him and were radiant,
and their faces shall not be ashamed.[d]
This poor man called and Yahweh heard,
and saved him from all his troubles.
The angel of Yahweh encamps
around those who fear him,
and he rescues them.
Taste and see that Yahweh is good;
blessed is the man who takes refuge in him.
Fear Yahweh, you his saints,[e]
for there is no lack for those who fear him.
10 The young lions are in want and suffer hunger,
but those who seek Yahweh will not lack for any good thing.
11 Come, you children, listen to me;
I will teach you the fear of Yahweh.
12 Who is the man who desires life,
who loves many days in order to see good?
13 Keep your tongue from evil
and your lips from speaking deceit.
14 Turn from evil and do good.
Seek peace and pursue it.
15 The eyes of Yahweh are toward the righteous,
and his ears toward their cry for help.
16 The face of Yahweh is against evildoers,
to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth.
17 They[f] cry out and Yahweh hears
and delivers them from all of their troubles.
18 Yahweh is near to those who are heartbroken
and saves those who are crushed in spirit.
19 Many are the distresses of the righteous,
but Yahweh delivers him out of them all.
20 He protects all his bones;
not one of them is broken.
21 Evil will slay the wicked,
and those who hate the righteous will incur guilt.
22 Yahweh redeems the life of his servants,
and none who take refuge in him will incur guilt.
