Deuteronomy 18

Chapter 18

The priests who are Levites,[a] in fact, the whole tribe of Levi, will have no portion nor inheritance with Israel. They can eat from the burnt offerings made to the Lord, that is their inheritance. They will have no inheritance among their brethren; the Lord is their inheritance, as he has promised them. This is the portion due to the priest from the people who offer a sacrifice of either an ox or a sheep: the shoulder, the jowl, and the inner organs. You will give them the firstfruits of the grain, the wine, and the oil, as well as the first sheering of the sheep for the Lord, your God, has chosen him and his sons out of all of the tribes to minister in the Lord’s name forever. If any Levite in all of Israel moves from his town where he had been living and he desires to go to the place that the Lord will choose, then he may minister in the name of the Lord, his God, like all his fellow Levites who serve there in the presence of the Lord. He will be given an equal share in their benefits in addition to the proceeds from the sale of his inheritance.

Forbidden Practices. When you enter the land that the Lord, your God, is giving you, you are not to learn to perform the abominations that those nations do. 10 Let no one among you offer his son or his daughter as a burnt offering, or practice divination, or interpret omens, or practice witchcraft,[b] 11 or cast spells, or act as a medium, or act as a wizard, or seek oracles from the dead. 12 Whoever does any of these things is an abomination to the Lord. It is because of these abominations that the Lord, your God, is driving them out before you.

13 You are to be blameless before the Lord, your God. 14 These nations that you are dispossessing listened to those who practice witchcraft and the diviners. It is not to be that way among you, for the Lord, your God, does not permit it.

15 Prophets. The Lord, your God, will raise up from among your countrymen a prophet who will do what I have done for you, and you will listen to him. 16 This is just as you asked the Lord, your God, at Horeb on the day of the assembly when you said, “Let me not hear the voice of the Lord, my God, anymore, nor look upon this great fire, lest I die.” 17 The Lord said to me, “They have spoken well. 18 I will raise up a prophet from among their countrymen who will be like you. I will place my words in his mouth, and he will tell them all that I command him. 19 I myself will call to account whoever does not heed my words that he will proclaim in my name. 20 But if a prophet presumes to proclaim something in my name that I have not said to him, or he speaks in the names of other gods, that prophet is to be put to death.” 21 You might say to yourself, “How can we know that the Lord did not speak the message?” 22 If what the prophet proclaims in the name of the Lord is not true and it does not happen, then the message was not proclaimed by the Lord. The prophet has spoken presumptuously, you should not fear him.[c]

Psalm 105

Psalm 105[a]

God’s Faithfulness to the Covenant

[b]Give thanks to the Lord, invoke his name;[c]
    proclaim his deeds among the peoples.
Offer him honor with songs of praise;
    recount all his marvelous deeds.
Glory in his holy name;
    let the hearts[d] of those who seek the Lord exult.
Reflect on the Lord and his strength;
    seek his face continually.
Remember the marvels he has wrought,
    his portents, and the judgments[e] he has set forth.
You are the offspring of his servant Abraham,
    the children of Jacob, his chosen ones.[f]
He is the Lord, our God;
    his judgments prevail all over the earth.
He is mindful of his covenant[g] forever,
    the promise he laid down for a thousand generations,
the covenant he made with Abraham
    and the oath he swore to Isaac.[h]
10 [i]He established it as a decree for Jacob,
    and as an everlasting covenant for Israel,
11 saying, “To you I will give the land of Canaan
    as the portion of your heritage.”
12 [j]When they were few in number,
    an insignificant group of strangers in it,
13 they wandered from nation to nation,
    from one kingdom to another.
14 He permitted no one to oppress them,
    and in their regard he warned kings:[k]
15 “Do not touch my anointed ones;
    do no harm to my prophets.”[l]
16 Then he invoked a famine on the land
    and destroyed their supply of bread.
17 But he had sent a man ahead of them,
    Joseph, who had been sold as a slave.
18 They shackled his feet with fetters
    and clamped an iron collar around his neck,
19 until what he had prophesied was fulfilled
    and the word of the Lord proved him true.
20 The king ordered that he be released;
    the ruler of the peoples set him free.
21 He appointed him as master of his household
    and as ruler of all his possessions.
22 He was to instruct[m] his princes as he deemed fit
    and to impart wisdom to his elders.
23 Then Israel went down into Egypt;
    Jacob lived as an alien in the land of Ham.[n]
24 God greatly increased the number of his people
    and made them too strong for their foes,
25 whose hearts he then turned[o] to hate his people
    and to conspire against his servants.
26 He sent his servant Moses,
    and Aaron whom he had chosen.
27 They performed his signs among them
    and worked wonders in the land of Ham.
28 [p]He sent darkness that enveloped the land,
    but they rebelled against his warnings.
29 He turned their waters into blood,
    and all their fish were destroyed.
30 Their land was saturated with frogs,
    even in the royal chambers.
31 At his command there came hordes of flies
    and gnats throughout their country.
32 He sent them hail instead of rain,
    and flashes of lightning in all their land.
33 He struck down their vines and their fig trees
    and demolished the trees of their country.
34 At his word the locusts came,
    as well as grasshoppers beyond all count.
35 They gobbled up every green plant in the land
    and devoured the produce of the soil.
36 He struck down all the firstborn of the land,
    the firstfruits of their manhood.
37 Then he led out his people with silver and gold,
    and there was not one among their tribes who stumbled.
38 Egypt was glad when they departed,
    for dread of Israel had overwhelmed them.
39 He spread a cloud over his people as a cover[q]
    and a fire to give light by night.
40 At their request he supplied them with quail,
    and he filled them with bread from heaven.[r]
41 He split open a rock and water gushed forth,
    flowing through the wilderness like a river.[s]
42 For he remembered the sacred promise
    that he had made to Abraham, his servant.
43 He led forth his people with rejoicing,
    his chosen ones with exultation.[t]
44 He gave them the lands of the nations,
    and they inherited the fruit of other people’s toil,
45 so that they might keep his decrees
    and observe his laws.
Alleluia.

Isaiah 45

Chapter 45

[a]Thus says the Lord to his anointed,
    to Cyrus whose right hand I have grasped,
to subdue nations before him
    and to remove the armor of kings,
opening doors before him
    and leaving no gates barred:
I myself will advance before you
    and level the mountains;
I will tear down bronze gates[b]
    and cut through bars of iron.
I will give you treasures concealed in darkness
    and riches hidden away in secret places,
so that you may know that I am the Lord,
    the God of Israel who calls you by your name.
For the sake of my servant Jacob
    and of Israel my chosen one,
I have called you by your name,
    and I have given you a title,
    even though you do not know me.
I am the Lord and there is no other;
    there is no god besides me.
I am the Lord who armed you
    even though you did not know me,
so that it may be acknowledged from east to west
    that there is no god besides me.
    I am the Lord, and there is no other.
I form the light and create the darkness;
    prosperity and disaster depend upon my will;
    I, the Lord, do all these things.
Rain down righteousness, you heavens;
    let the skies pour it down from above.
Let the earth open up
    so that salvation may blossom forth,
and let justice also spring up;
    I, the Lord, have created it.
Woe to anyone who rises up against his Maker,
    or to the pot that is displeased with the potter.
Does the clay say to the one who molds it,
    “What are you doing?
    Your work makes no sense.”
10 Woe to anyone who asks a father,
    “What are you begetting?”
or who says to a mother,
    “To what have you given birth?”
11 Thus says the Lord,
    the Holy One of Israel and its Maker:
How dare you question me about my children
    or command me regarding the work of my hands?
12 I was the one who made the earth
    and created mankind upon it.
It was my hands that stretched out the heavens
    and commanded all their host.
13 I have raised this man for the triumph of justice,
    and I will smooth all his paths.
He will rebuild my city
    and set my exiles free
without price or ransom,
    says the Lord of hosts.
14 Thus says the Lord:
    The wealth of Egypt, the commerce of Ethiopia,
    and the Sabeans, tall of stature,
will come over to you and belong to you;
    they will follow you, wearing chains.
They will bow down before you
    and pray to you, saying,
“God is with you alone, and there is no other;
    there is no god aside from him.”[c]
15 Truly you are a God who is hidden,
    O God of Israel, the Savior.
16 All the makers of idols are disgraced and humbled;
    they perish in their shame.
17 But Israel is saved by the Lord,
    a salvation that is everlasting.
You will never be put to shame or humiliated
    forever and ever.
18 For thus says the Lord,
    the Creator of the heavens,
    he who is God,
the one who formed the earth and created it
    and established it;
he did not create it to be a wasteland,
    but a place to be lived in.
I am the Lord,
    and there is no other.
19 I did not speak in secret,
    in realms of darkness.
I did not say to the offspring of Jacob,
    “Search for me in an empty waste.”
I the Lord proclaim the truth;
    I declare what is right.
20 Gather together and come forth;
    assemble, all you survivors of the nations.
Bereft of knowledge are those
    who parade with their wooden idols
    and pray to gods who are unable to save them.
21 Come forward and present your case
    once you have examined the evidence.
Who foretold this in ages past?
    Who revealed it long ago?
Was it not I, the Lord?
    There is no god aside from me,
    I alone am the righteous God and Savior.
22 If you turn to me, you will be saved,
    all you ends of the earth,
    for I am God, and there is no other.
23 By myself I have sworn
    that the word that issues forth from my mouth
    is righteous and irrevocable.
To me every knee will bow,
    every tongue will swear,
24 saying, “In the Lord alone
    are righteousness and strength;
all those who formerly defied him
    and vented their rage against him
    will come before him in shame.
25 Then all the descendants of Israel
    will be triumphant and glory in the Lord.”

Revelation 15

Chapter 15

The Seven Angels and the Seven Plagues.[a] Then I saw in heaven another great and wondrous sign: seven angels with the seven plagues, the last plagues of all, for through them the wrath of God is completed.

The Song of Moses and the Song of the Lamb.[b] I saw something that looked like a sea of glass mixed with fire. Standing beside the sea of glass and holding the harps that God had given them were those who had been victorious over the beast and its image and over the number of its name. They were holding harps given them by God and singing the song of Moses, the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb:

“How great and wonderful are your works,
    Lord God Almighty!
Just and true are your ways,
    O King of the nations!
Who shall not fear you, O Lord,
    and bring glory to your name?
    For you alone are holy.
All nations will come
    and worship before you,
    for your acts of justice have been revealed.”

The Justice and Triumph of God[c]

Vision of the Temple. After this, in my vision, the temple, that is, the tabernacle of the Testimony,[d] was opened in heaven, and from the temple emerged the seven angels with the seven plagues. They were robed in clean, shining linen, and breastplates of gold were fastened around their chests.

Then one of the four living creatures gave to the seven angels seven gold bowls full of the wrath of God, who lives forever and ever. The temple was filled with the smoke from the glory of God and from his power, so that no one could enter the temple until the seven plagues of the seven angels were completed.
