The Vision of Four Figures
1 Now it came about in the thirtieth year, on the fifth day of the fourth month, while I was by the (A)river Chebar among the exiles, the (B)heavens were opened and I saw [a](C)visions of God. 2 (On the fifth of the month [b]in the (D)fifth year of King Jehoiachin’s exile, 3 the (E)word of the Lord came expressly to Ezekiel the priest, son of Buzi, in the (F)land of the Chaldeans by the river Chebar; and there (G)the hand of the Lord came upon him.)
4 As I looked, behold, a (H)storm wind was coming from the north, a great cloud with fire flashing forth continually and a bright light around it, and in its midst something like (I)glowing metal in the midst of the fire. 5 Within it there were figures resembling (J)four living beings. And this was their appearance: they had human (K)form. 6 Each of them had (L)four faces and (M)four wings. 7 Their legs were straight and [c]their feet were like a calf’s hoof, and they gleamed like (N)burnished bronze. 8 Under their wings on their (O)four sides were human (P)hands. As for the faces and wings of the four of them, 9 their wings touched one another; their faces did (Q)not turn when they moved, each (R)went straight forward. 10 As for the (S)form of their faces, each had the (T)face of a man; [d]all four had the face of a lion on the right and the face of a bull on the left, and [e]all four had the face of an eagle. 11 Such were their faces. Their wings were spread out above; each had two touching another being, and (U)two covering their bodies. 12 And (V)each went straight forward; (W)wherever the spirit was about to go, they would go, without turning as they went. 13 [f]In the midst of the living beings there was something that looked like burning coals of (X)fire, [g]like torches darting back and forth among the living beings. The fire was bright, and lightning was [h]flashing from the fire. 14 And the living beings (Y)ran to and fro like bolts of (Z)lightning.
15 Now as I looked at the living beings, behold, there was one (AA)wheel on the earth beside the living beings, [i]for each of the four of them. 16 The (AB)appearance of the wheels and their workmanship was like [j]sparkling (AC)beryl, and all four of them had the same form, their appearance and workmanship being as if [k]one wheel were within another. 17 Whenever they [l]moved, they [m]moved in any of their four [n]directions without (AD)turning as they [o]moved. 18 As for their rims they were lofty and awesome, and the rims of all four of them were (AE)full of eyes round about. 19 (AF)Whenever the living beings [p]moved, the wheels [q]moved with them. And whenever the living beings (AG)rose from the earth, the wheels rose also. 20 (AH)Wherever the spirit was about to go, they would go in that direction[r]. And the wheels rose close beside them; for the spirit of the living [s]beings was in the wheels. 21 (AI)Whenever those went, these went; and whenever those stood still, these stood still. And whenever those rose from the earth, the wheels rose close beside them; for the spirit of the living [t]beings was in the wheels.
Vision of Divine Glory
22 Now (AJ)over the heads of the living [u]beings there was something like an expanse, like the awesome gleam of [v]crystal, spread out over their heads. 23 Under the expanse their wings were stretched out straight, one toward the other; each one also had (AK)two wings covering its body on the one side and on the other. 24 I also heard the sound of their wings like the (AL)sound of abundant waters as they went, like the (AM)voice of [w]the Almighty, a sound of tumult like the (AN)sound of an army camp; whenever they stood still, they dropped their wings. 25 And there came a voice from above the (AO)expanse that was over their heads; whenever they stood still, they dropped their wings.
26 Now (AP)above the expanse that was over their heads there was something (AQ)resembling a throne, like [x](AR)lapis lazuli in appearance; and on that which resembled a throne, high up, was a figure with the appearance of a (AS)man. 27 Then I [y]noticed from the appearance of His loins and upward something (AT)like [z]glowing metal that looked like fire all around within it, and from the appearance of His loins and downward I saw something like fire; and there was a radiance around Him. 28 As the appearance of the (AU)rainbow [aa]in the clouds on a rainy day, so was the appearance of the surrounding radiance. Such was the appearance of the likeness of the (AV)glory of the Lord. And when I saw it, I (AW)fell on my face and heard a voice speaking.
The Prophet’s Call
2 Then He said to me, “Son of man, (AX)stand on your feet that I may speak with you!” 2 As He spoke to me the (AY)Spirit entered me and set me on my feet; and I heard Him speaking to me. 3 Then He said to me, “Son of man, I am sending you to the sons of Israel, to a rebellious people who have (AZ)rebelled against Me; (BA)they and their fathers have transgressed against Me to this very day. 4 I am sending you to them who are [ab](BB)stubborn and obstinate children, and you shall say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord [ac]God.’ 5 As for them, (BC)whether they listen or [ad]not—for they are a rebellious house—they will (BD)know that a prophet has been among them. 6 And you, son of man, (BE)neither fear them nor fear their words, though (BF)thistles and thorns are with you and you sit on scorpions; neither fear their words nor be dismayed at their presence, for they are a rebellious house. 7 But you shall (BG)speak My words to them (BH)whether they listen or [ae]not, for they are rebellious.
8 “Now you, son of man, listen to what I am speaking to you; do not be rebellious like that rebellious house. Open your mouth and (BI)eat what I am giving you.” 9 Then I looked, and behold, a (BJ)hand was extended to me; and lo, a [af](BK)scroll was in it. 10 When He spread it out before me, it was written on the front and back, and written on it were lamentations, mourning and (BL)woe.
Ezekiel’s Commission
3 Then He said to me, “Son of man, eat what you find; (BM)eat this scroll, and go, speak to the house of Israel.” 2 So I (BN)opened my mouth, and He fed me this scroll. 3 He said to me, “Son of man, feed your stomach and (BO)fill your [ag]body with this scroll which I am giving you.” Then I (BP)ate it, and it was sweet as (BQ)honey in my mouth.
4 Then He said to me, “Son of man, [ah]go to the house of Israel and speak with My words to them. 5 For (BR)you are not being sent to a people of [ai](BS)unintelligible speech or difficult language, but to the house of Israel, 6 nor to many peoples of [aj]unintelligible speech or difficult language, whose words you cannot understand. [ak]But I have sent you to them [al]who should listen to you; 7 yet the house of Israel will not be willing to listen to you, since they are (BT)not willing to listen to Me. Surely the whole house of Israel is [am]stubborn and obstinate. 8 Behold, I have made your face as hard as their faces and your forehead as hard as their foreheads. 9 Like [an]emery harder than flint I have made your forehead. Do not be afraid of them or be dismayed before them, though they are a rebellious house.” 10 Moreover, He said to me, “Son of man, take into your heart all My (BU)words which I will speak to you and listen [ao]closely. 11 [ap]Go to the exiles, to the sons of your people, and speak to them and tell them, whether they listen or [aq]not, ‘Thus says the Lord [ar]God.’”
12 Then the (BV)Spirit lifted me up, and I heard a great (BW)rumbling sound behind me, “Blessed be the glory of the Lord [as]in His place.” 13 And I heard the sound of the wings of the living beings touching one another and the sound of the (BX)wheels beside them, even a great rumbling sound. 14 So the Spirit lifted me up and took me away; and I went embittered in the rage of my spirit, and (BY)the hand of the Lord was strong on me. 15 Then I came to the exiles who lived beside the river Chebar at Tel-abib, and I sat there (BZ)seven days where they were living, causing consternation among them.
Jesus Our High Priest
3 Therefore, (A)holy brethren, partakers of a (B)heavenly calling, consider Jesus, (C)the Apostle and (D)High Priest of our (E)confession; 2 [a]He was faithful to Him who appointed Him, as (F)Moses also was in all His house. 3 (G)For He has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses, by just so much as the builder of the house has more honor than the house. 4 For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God. 5 Now (H)Moses was faithful in all His house as (I)a servant, (J)for a testimony of those things (K)which were to be spoken later; 6 but Christ was faithful as (L)a Son over His house—(M)whose house we are, (N)if we hold fast our (O)confidence and the boast of our (P)hope firm until the end.
7 Therefore, just as (Q)the Holy Spirit says,
“(R)Today if you hear His voice,
8 (S)Do not harden your hearts as [b]when they provoked Me,
As in the day of trial in the wilderness,
9 (T)Where your fathers tried Me by testing Me,
And saw My works for (U)forty years.
10 “(V)Therefore I was angry with this generation,
And said, ‘They always go astray in their heart,
And they did not know My ways’;
11 (W)As I swore in My wrath,
‘They shall not enter My rest.’”
The Peril of Unbelief
12 (X)Take care, brethren, that there not be in any one of you an evil, unbelieving heart [c]that falls away from (Y)the living God. 13 But (Z)encourage one another day after day, as long as it is still called “Today,” so that none of you will be hardened by the (AA)deceitfulness of sin. 14 For we have become partakers of Christ, (AB)if we hold fast the beginning of our (AC)assurance firm until the end, 15 while it is said,
16 For who (AE)provoked Him when they had heard? Indeed, (AF)did not all those who came out of Egypt led by Moses? 17 And with whom was He angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, (AG)whose bodies fell in the wilderness? 18 And to whom did He swear (AH)that they would not enter His rest, but to those who were (AI)disobedient? 19 So we see that they were not able to enter because of (AJ)unbelief.
The Lord’s Care over All His Works.
104 (A)Bless the Lord, O my soul!
O Lord my God, You are very great;
You are (B)clothed with splendor and majesty,
2 Covering Yourself with (C)light as with a cloak,
(D)Stretching out heaven like a tent curtain.
3 [a]He (E)lays the beams of His upper chambers in the waters;
[b]He makes the (F)clouds His chariot;
[c]He walks upon the (G)wings of the wind;
4 [d]He makes [e](H)the winds His messengers,
[f]Flaming (I)fire His ministers.
5 He (J)established the earth upon its foundations,
So that it will not [g]totter forever and ever.
6 You (K)covered it with the deep as with a garment;
The waters were standing above the mountains.
7 At Your (L)rebuke they fled,
At the (M)sound of Your thunder they hurried away.
8 The mountains rose; the valleys sank down
To the (N)place which You established for them.
9 You set a (O)boundary that they may not pass over,
So that they will not return to cover the earth.
10 [h]He sends forth (P)springs in the valleys;
They flow between the mountains;
11 They (Q)give drink to every beast of the field;
The (R)wild donkeys quench their thirst.
12 [i]Beside them the birds of the heavens (S)dwell;
They [j]lift up their voices among the branches.
13 [k]He (T)waters the mountains from His upper chambers;
(U)The earth is satisfied with the fruit of His works.
14 [l]He causes the (V)grass to grow for the [m]cattle,
And (W)vegetation for the [n]labor of man,
So that [o]he may bring forth [p]food (X)from the earth,
15 And (Y)wine which makes man’s heart glad,
(Z)So that he may make his face glisten with oil,
And [q]food which (AA)sustains man’s heart.
16 The trees of the Lord [r]drink their fill,
The cedars of Lebanon which He planted,
17 Where the (AB)birds build their nests,
And the (AC)stork, whose home is the [s]fir trees.
18 The high mountains are for the (AD)wild goats;
The (AE)cliffs are a refuge for the [t](AF)shephanim.
19 He made the moon (AG)for the seasons;
The (AH)sun knows the place of its setting.
20 You (AI)appoint darkness and it becomes night,
In which all the (AJ)beasts of the forest [u]prowl about.
21 The (AK)young lions roar after their prey
[v]And (AL)seek their food from God.
22 When the sun rises they withdraw
And lie down in their (AM)dens.
23 Man goes forth to (AN)his work
And to his labor until evening.
