Exodus 30-32

The Altar of Incense

30 [a] “You are to make an altar for burning incense;[b] you are to make it of[c] acacia wood.[d] Its length is to be 18 inches[e] and its width 18 inches; it will be square. Its height is to be 36 inches,[f] with its horns of one piece with it.[g] You are to overlay it with pure gold—its top,[h] its four walls,[i] and its horns—and make a surrounding border of gold for it.[j] You are to make two gold rings for it under its border, on its two flanks; you are to make them on its two sides.[k] The rings[l] will be places[m] for poles to carry it with. You are to make the poles of acacia wood and overlay them with gold.

“You are to put it in front of the curtain that is before the ark of the testimony (before the atonement lid that is over the testimony), where I will meet you. Aaron is to burn sweet incense[n] on it morning by morning; when he attends to[o] the lamps he is to burn incense.[p] When Aaron sets up the lamps around sundown he is to burn incense on it; it is to be a regular incense offering before the Lord throughout your generations. You must not offer strange incense on it, nor burnt offering, nor meal offering, and you must not pour out a drink offering on it. 10 Aaron is to make atonement on its horns once in the year with some of the blood of the sin offering for atonement;[q] once in the year[r] he is to make atonement on it throughout your generations. It is most holy to the Lord.”[s]

The Ransom Money

11 [t] The Lord spoke to Moses,[u] 12 “When you take a census[v] of the Israelites according to their number,[w] then each man is to pay a ransom[x] for his life to the Lord when you number them,[y] so that there will be no plague among them when you number them. 13 Everyone who crosses over to those who are numbered[z] is to pay this: a half shekel[aa] according to the shekel of the sanctuary[ab] (a shekel weighs twenty gerahs). The half shekel is to be an offering[ac] to the Lord. 14 Everyone who crosses over to those numbered, from twenty years old and up, is to pay an offering to the Lord. 15 The rich are not to pay more and the poor are not to pay less than the half shekel when giving[ad] the offering of the Lord, to make atonement[ae] for your lives. 16 You are to receive the atonement money[af] from the Israelites and give it for the service[ag] of the tent of meeting. It will be a memorial[ah] for the Israelites before the Lord, to make atonement[ai] for your lives.”

The Bronze Laver

17 [aj] The Lord spoke to Moses,[ak] 18 “You are also to make a large bronze[al] basin with a bronze stand[am] for washing. You are to put it between the tent of meeting and the altar and put water in it,[an] 19 and Aaron and his sons must wash their hands and their feet from it.[ao] 20 When they enter[ap] the tent of meeting, they must wash with[aq] water so that they do not die.[ar] Also, when they approach[as] the altar to minister by burning incense[at] as an offering made by fire[au] to the Lord, 21 they must wash[av] their hands and their feet so that they do not die. And this[aw] will be a perpetual ordinance for them and for their descendants[ax] throughout their generations.”[ay]

Oil and Incense

22 [az] The Lord spoke to Moses,[ba] 23 “Take[bb] choice spices:[bc] 12½ pounds[bd] of free-flowing myrrh,[be] half that—about 6¼ pounds—of sweet-smelling cinnamon, 6¼ pounds of sweet-smelling cane, 24 and 12½ pounds of cassia, all weighed[bf] according to the sanctuary shekel, and four quarts[bg] of olive oil. 25 You are to make this[bh] into[bi] a sacred anointing oil, a perfumed compound,[bj] the work of a perfumer. It will be sacred anointing oil.

26 “With it you are to anoint the tent of meeting, the ark of the testimony, 27 the table and all its utensils, the lampstand and its utensils, the altar of incense, 28 the altar for the burnt offering and all its utensils, and the laver and its base. 29 So you are to sanctify them,[bk] and they will be most holy;[bl] anything that touches them will be holy.[bm]

30 “You are to anoint Aaron and his sons and[bn] sanctify them so that they may minister as my priests. 31 And you are to tell the Israelites: ‘This is to be my sacred anointing oil throughout your generations. 32 It must not be applied[bo] to people’s bodies, and you must not make any like it with the same recipe. It is holy, and it must be holy to you. 33 Whoever makes perfume like it and whoever puts any of it on someone not a priest[bp] will be cut off[bq] from his people.’”

34 The Lord said to Moses, “Take[br] spices, gum resin,[bs] onycha,[bt] galbanum,[bu] and pure frankincense[bv] of equal amounts[bw] 35 and make it into an incense,[bx] a perfume,[by] the work of a perfumer. It is to be finely ground,[bz] and pure and sacred. 36 You are to beat some of it very fine and put some of it before the ark of the testimony in the tent of meeting where I will meet with you; it is to be most holy to you. 37 And the incense that you are to make, you must not make for yourselves using the same recipe; it is to be most holy to you, belonging to the Lord. 38 Whoever makes anything like it, to use as perfume,[ca] will be cut off from his people.”

Willing Artisans

31 [cb] The Lord spoke to Moses,[cc] “See, I have chosen[cd] Bezalel son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, and I have filled him with the Spirit of God[ce] in skill,[cf] in understanding, in knowledge, and in all kinds of[cg] craftsmanship, to make artistic designs[ch] for work with gold, with silver, and with bronze, and with cutting and setting stone, and with cutting wood, to work in all kinds of craftsmanship. Moreover,[ci] I have also given him Oholiab son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan, and I have given ability to all the specially skilled,[cj] that they may make[ck] everything I have commanded you: the tent of meeting, the ark of the testimony, the atonement lid that is on it, all the furnishings[cl] of the tent, the table with its utensils, the pure lampstand with all its utensils, the altar of incense, the altar for the burnt offering with all its utensils, the large basin with its base, 10 the woven garments, the holy garments for Aaron the priest and the garments for his sons, to minister as priests, 11 the anointing oil, and sweet incense for the Holy Place. They will make all these things just as I have commanded you.”

Sabbath Observance

12 [cm] The Lord said to Moses,[cn] 13 “Tell the Israelites, ‘Surely you must keep my Sabbaths,[co] for it is a sign between me and you throughout your generations, that you may know that I am the Lord who sanctifies you.[cp] 14 So you must keep the Sabbath, for it is holy for you. Everyone who defiles it[cq] must surely be put to death; indeed,[cr] if anyone does[cs] any[ct] work on it, then that person will be cut off from among his[cu] people. 15 Six days[cv] work may be done,[cw] but on the seventh day is a Sabbath of complete rest,[cx] holy to the Lord; anyone who does work on the Sabbath day must surely be put to death. 16 The Israelites must keep the Sabbath by observing the Sabbath throughout their generations as a perpetual covenant. 17 It is a sign between me and the Israelites forever; for in six days[cy] the Lord made the heavens and the earth, and on the seventh day he rested and was refreshed.’”[cz]

18 He gave Moses two tablets of testimony when he had finished speaking with him on Mount Sinai, tablets of stone written by the finger of God.[da]

The Sin of the Golden Calf

32 [db] When the people saw that Moses delayed[dc] in coming down[dd] from the mountain, they[de] gathered around Aaron and said to him, “Get up,[df] make us gods[dg] that will go before us. As for this fellow Moses,[dh] the man who brought us up from the land of Egypt, we do not know what[di] has become of him!”

So Aaron said to them, “Break off the gold earrings that are on the ears of your wives, your sons, and your daughters, and bring them to me.”[dj] So all[dk] the people broke off the gold earrings that were on their ears and brought them to Aaron. He accepted the gold[dl] from them,[dm] fashioned[dn] it with an engraving tool, and made a molten calf.[do] Then they said, “These are your gods,[dp] O Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.”

When[dq] Aaron saw this,[dr] he built an altar before it,[ds] and Aaron made a proclamation[dt] and said, “Tomorrow will be a feast[du] to the Lord.” So they got up early on the next day and offered up burnt offerings and brought peace offerings, and the people sat down to eat and drink,[dv] and they rose up to play.[dw]

The Lord spoke to Moses, “Go quickly, descend,[dx] because your[dy] people, whom you brought up from the land of Egypt, have acted corruptly. They have quickly turned aside[dz] from the way that I commanded them—they have made for themselves a molten calf and have bowed down to it and sacrificed to it and said, ‘These are your gods, O Israel, which brought you up from the land of Egypt.’”

Then the Lord said to Moses, “I have seen this people.[ea] Look[eb] what a stiff-necked people they are![ec] 10 So now, leave me alone[ed] so that my anger can burn against them and I can destroy them, and I will make from you a great nation.”

11 But Moses sought the favor[ee] of the Lord his God and said, “O Lord, why does your anger burn against your people, whom you have brought out from the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand? 12 Why[ef] should the Egyptians say,[eg] ‘For evil[eh] he led them out to kill them in the mountains and to destroy[ei] them from the face of the earth’? Turn from your burning anger, and relent[ej] of this evil against your people. 13 Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel your servants, to whom you swore by yourself and told them, ‘I will multiply your descendants[ek] like the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have spoken about[el] I will give to your descendants,[em] and they will inherit it forever.’” 14 Then the Lord relented over the evil that he had said he would do to his people.

15 Moses turned and went down from the mountain with[en] the two tablets of the testimony in his hands. The tablets were written on both sides—they were written on the front and on the back. 16 Now the tablets were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, engraved on the tablets. 17 When Joshua heard the noise of the people as they shouted,[eo] he said to Moses, “It is the sound of war in the camp!” 18 Moses[ep] said, “It is not the sound of those who shout for victory,[eq] nor is it the sound of those who cry because they are overcome,[er] but the sound of singing[es] I hear.”[et]

19 When he approached the camp and saw the calf and the dancing, Moses became extremely angry.[eu] He threw the tablets from his hands and broke them to pieces at the bottom of the mountain.[ev] 20 He took the calf they had made and burned it in the fire, ground it[ew] to powder, poured it out on the water, and made the Israelites drink it.[ex]

21 Moses said to Aaron, “What did this people do to you, that you have brought on them so great a sin?” 22 Aaron said, “Do not let your anger burn hot, my lord;[ey] you know these people, that they tend to evil.[ez] 23 They said to me, ‘Make us gods that will go before us, for as for this fellow Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has happened to him.’ 24 So I said to them, ‘Whoever has gold, break it off.’ So they gave it[fa] to me, and I threw it into the fire, and this calf came out.”[fb]

25 Moses saw that the people were running wild,[fc] for Aaron had let them get completely out of control, causing derision from their enemies.[fd] 26 So Moses stood at the entrance of the camp and said, “Whoever is for the Lord, come[fe] to me.”[ff] All the Levites gathered around him, 27 and he said to them, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, has said ‘Each man fasten[fg] his sword on his side, and go back and forth[fh] from entrance to entrance throughout the camp, and each one kill his brother, his friend, and his neighbor.’”[fi]

28 The Levites did what Moses ordered,[fj] and that day about 3,000 men of the people died.[fk] 29 Moses said, “You have been consecrated[fl] today for the Lord, for each of you was against his son or against his brother, so he has given a blessing to you today.”[fm]

30 The next day Moses said to the people,[fn] “You have committed a very serious sin,[fo] but now I will go up to the Lord—perhaps I can make atonement[fp] on behalf of your sin.”

31 So Moses returned to the Lord and said, “Alas, this people has committed a very serious sin,[fq] and they have made for themselves gods of gold. 32 But now, if you will forgive their sin…,[fr] but if not, wipe me out[fs] from your book that you have written.”[ft] 33 The Lord said to Moses, “Whoever has sinned against me—that person I will wipe out of my book. 34 So now go, lead the people to the place I have spoken to you about. See,[fu] my angel will go before you. But on the day that I punish, I will indeed punish them for their sin.”[fv]

35 And the Lord sent a plague on the people because they had made the calf[fw]—the one Aaron made.[fx]
