Job Is Humbled and Satisfied
42 Then Job answered the Lord:
2 “I know that you can do all things
and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted.(A)
3 ‘Who is this that hides counsel without knowledge?’
Therefore I have uttered what I did not understand,
things too wonderful for me that I did not know.(B)
4 ‘Hear, and I will speak;
I will question you, and you declare to me.’(C)
5 I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear,
but now my eye sees you;(D)
6 therefore I despise myself
and repent in dust and ashes.”(E)
Job’s Friends Are Humiliated
7 After the Lord had spoken these words to Job, the Lord said to Eliphaz the Temanite: “My wrath is kindled against you and against your two friends, for you have not spoken of me what is right, as my servant Job has.(F) 8 Now therefore take seven bulls and seven rams, and go to my servant Job, and offer up for yourselves a burnt offering, and my servant Job shall pray for you, for I will accept his prayer not to deal with you according to your folly, for you have not spoken of me what is right, as my servant Job has done.”(G) 9 So Eliphaz the Temanite and Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite went and did what the Lord had told them, and the Lord accepted Job’s prayer.
Job’s Fortunes Are Restored Twofold
10 And the Lord restored the fortunes of Job when he had prayed for his friends, and the Lord gave Job twice as much as he had before.(H) 11 Then there came to him all his brothers and sisters and all who had known him before, and they ate bread with him in his house; they showed him sympathy and comforted him for all the evil that the Lord had brought upon him; and each of them gave him a piece of money[a] and a gold ring.(I) 12 The Lord blessed the latter days of Job more than his beginning, and he had fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, a thousand yoke of oxen, and a thousand donkeys.(J) 13 He also had seven sons and three daughters.(K) 14 He named the first Jemimah, the second Keziah, and the third Keren-happuch. 15 In all the land there were no women so beautiful as Job’s daughters, and their father gave them an inheritance along with their brothers. 16 After this Job lived one hundred and forty years and saw his children and his children’s children, four generations.(L) 17 And Job died, old and full of days.(M)
Book I
(Psalms 1–41)
Psalm 1
The Two Ways
1 Happy are those
who do not follow the advice of the wicked
or take the path that sinners tread
or sit in the seat of scoffers,(N)
2 but their delight is in the law of the Lord,
and on his law they meditate day and night.(O)
3 They are like trees
planted by streams of water,
which yield their fruit in its season,
and their leaves do not wither.
In all that they do, they prosper.(P)
4 The wicked are not so
but are like chaff that the wind drives away.(Q)
5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment
nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous,(R)
6 for the Lord watches over the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked will perish.(S)
Psalm 2
God’s Promise to His Anointed
1 Why do the nations conspire
and the peoples plot in vain?(T)
2 The kings of the earth set themselves,
and the rulers take counsel together,
against the Lord and his anointed, saying,(U)
3 “Let us burst their bonds apart
and cast their cords from us.”
4 He who sits in the heavens laughs;
the Lord has them in derision.(V)
5 Then he will speak to them in his wrath
and terrify them in his fury, saying,(W)
6 “I have set my king on Zion, my holy hill.”(X)
7 I will tell of the decree of the Lord:
He said to me, “You are my son;
today I have begotten you.(Y)
8 Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage
and the ends of the earth your possession.(Z)
9 You shall break them with a rod of iron
and dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.”(AA)
10 Now therefore, O kings, be wise;
be warned, O rulers of the earth.
11 Serve the Lord with fear;
with trembling(AB) 12 kiss his feet,[b]
or he will be angry, and you will perish in the way,
for his wrath is quickly kindled.
Happy are all who take refuge in him.(AC)

“There is no help for you[c] in God.” Selah
3 But you, O Lord, are a shield around me,
my glory, and the one who lifts up my head.(AD)
4 I cry aloud to the Lord,
and he answers me from his holy hill. Selah(AE)
5 I lie down and sleep;
I wake again, for the Lord sustains me.(AF)
6 I am not afraid of ten thousands of people
who have set themselves against me all around.
7 Rise up, O Lord!
Deliver me, O my God!
For you strike all my enemies on the cheek;
you break the teeth of the wicked.
8 Deliverance belongs to the Lord;
may your blessing be on your people! Selah(AG)
Psalm 4

You gave me room when I was in distress.
Be gracious to me, and hear my prayer.(AH)

How long will you love vain words and seek after lies? Selah(AI)
3 But know that the Lord has set apart the faithful for himself;
the Lord hears when I call to him.(AJ)
4 When you are disturbed,[d] do not sin;
ponder it on your beds, and be silent. Selah(AK)
5 Offer right sacrifices,
and put your trust in the Lord.(AL)
6 There are many who say, “O that we might see some good!
Let the light of your face shine on us, O Lord!”(AM)
7 You have put gladness in my heart
more than when their grain and wine abound.(AN)
8 I will both lie down and sleep in peace,
for you alone, O Lord, make me lie down in safety.(AO)
Psalm 5

my King and my God,

in the morning I plead my case to you and watch.(AR)
4 For you are not a God who delights in wickedness;
evil will not sojourn with you.(AS)
5 The boastful will not stand before your eyes;
you hate all evildoers.(AT)
6 You destroy those who speak lies;
the Lord abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful.(AU)
7 But I, through the abundance of your steadfast love,
will enter your house;
I will bow down toward your holy temple
in awe of you.(AV)
8 Lead me, O Lord, in your righteousness
because of my enemies;
make your way straight before me.(AW)
9 For there is no truth in their mouths;
their hearts are destruction;
their throats are open graves;
they flatter with their tongues.(AX)
10 Make them bear their guilt, O God;
let them fall by their own counsels;
because of their many transgressions, cast them out,
for they have rebelled against you.(AY)
11 But let all who take refuge in you rejoice;
let them ever sing for joy.
Spread your protection over them,
so that those who love your name may exult in you.(AZ)
12 For you bless the righteous, O Lord;
you cover them with favor as with a shield.(BA)

O Lord, heal me, for my bones are shaking with terror.(BC)
3 My soul also is struck with terror,
while you, O Lord—how long?(BD)
4 Turn, O Lord, save my life;
deliver me for the sake of your steadfast love.
5 For in death there is no remembrance of you;
in Sheol who can give you praise?(BE)
6 I am weary with my moaning;
every night I flood my bed with tears;
I drench my couch with my weeping.
7 My eyes waste away because of grief;
they grow weak because of all my foes.(BF)
8 Depart from me, all you workers of evil,
for the Lord has heard the sound of my weeping.(BG)
9 The Lord has heard my supplication;
the Lord accepts my prayer.(BH)
10 All my enemies shall be ashamed and struck with terror;
they shall turn back and in a moment be put to shame.
Psalm 7

A Shiggaion of David, which he sang to the Lord concerning Cush, a Benjaminite.
1 O Lord my God, in you I take refuge;
save me from all my pursuers, and deliver me,(BI)
2 or like a lion they will tear me apart;
they will drag me away, with no one to rescue.(BJ)
3 O Lord my God, if I have done this,
if there is wrong in my hands,(BK)
4 if I have repaid my ally with harm
or plundered my foe without cause,(BL)
5 then let the enemy pursue and overtake me,
trample my life to the ground,
and lay my soul in the dust. Selah

the moon and the stars that you have established;(CA)

you have put all things under their feet,(CD)
7 all sheep and oxen,
and also the beasts of the field,
8 the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea,
whatever passes along the paths of the seas.
9 O Lord, our Sovereign,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!(CE)

you have blotted out their name forever and ever.(CJ)

Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble?

let them be caught in the schemes they have devised.(CZ)
3 For the wicked boast of the desires of their heart;
those greedy for gain curse and renounce the Lord.(DA)
4 In the pride of their countenance the wicked say, “God will not seek it out”;
all their thoughts are, “There is no God.”(DB)
5 Their ways prosper at all times;

as for their foes, they scoff at them.

throughout all generations we shall not meet adversity.”(DC)
7 Their mouths are filled with cursing and deceit and oppression;
under their tongues are mischief and iniquity.(DD)
8 They sit in ambush in the villages;

he has hidden his face; he will never see it.”(DG)

do not forget the oppressed.(DH)

my heart shall rejoice in your salvation.(EF)
6 I will sing to the Lord
because he has dealt bountifully with me.(EG)

give ear to my prayer from lips free of deceit.

let your eyes see the right.
3 If you try my heart, if you visit me by night,

O savior of those who seek refuge
from their adversaries at your right hand.(FH)
8 Guard me as the apple of the eye;
hide me in the shadow of your wings,(FI)
9 from the wicked who despoil me,
my deadly enemies who surround me.
10 They close their hearts to pity;
with their mouths they speak arrogantly.(FJ)

they set their eyes to cast me to the ground.

1 I love you, O Lord, my strength.
2 The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer,
my God, my rock in whom I take refuge,
my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.(FO)
3 I call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised,
so I shall be saved from my enemies.(FP)
4 The cords of death encompassed me;
the torrents of perdition assailed me;(FQ)
5 the cords of Sheol entangled me;
the snares of death confronted me.(FR)
6 In my distress I called upon the Lord;
to my God I cried for help.
From his temple he heard my voice,
and my cry to him reached his ears.(FS)
7 Then the earth reeled and rocked;
the foundations also of the mountains trembled
and reeled because he was angry.(FT)
8 Smoke went up from his nostrils
and devouring fire from his mouth;
glowing coals flamed forth from him.
9 He bowed the heavens and came down;
thick darkness was under his feet.(FU)
10 He rode on a cherub and flew;
he came swiftly upon the wings of the wind.(FV)
11 He made darkness his covering around him,
his canopy thick clouds dark with water.(FW)
12 Out of the brightness before him
there broke through his clouds
hailstones and coals of fire.(FX)
13 The Lord also thundered in the heavens,
and the Most High uttered his voice.[r](FY)
14 And he sent out his arrows and scattered them;
he flashed forth lightnings and routed them.(FZ)
15 Then the channels of the sea were seen,
and the foundations of the world were laid bare
at your rebuke, O Lord,
at the blast of the breath of your nostrils.(GA)
16 He reached down from on high; he took me;
he drew me out of mighty waters.(GB)
17 He delivered me from my strong enemy
and from those who hated me,

he delivered me because he delighted in me.(GD)
20 The Lord rewarded me according to my righteousness;
according to the cleanness of my hands he recompensed me.(GE)
21 For I have kept the ways of the Lord
and have not wickedly departed from my God.(GF)
22 For all his ordinances were before me,
and his statutes I did not put away from me.(GG)
23 I was blameless before him,
and I kept myself from guilt.
24 Therefore the Lord has recompensed me according to my righteousness,
according to the cleanness of my hands in his sight.(GH)
25 With the loyal you show yourself loyal;
with the blameless you show yourself blameless;(GI)
26 with the pure you show yourself pure;

but the haughty eyes you bring down.(GK)

the Lord, my God, lights up my darkness.(GL)

31 For who is God except the Lord?
And who is a rock besides our God?(GO)
32 The God who has girded me with strength
and made my way safe.[s]
33 He made my feet like the feet of a deer
and set me secure on the heights.(GP)
34 He trains my hands for war,
so that my arms can bend a bow of bronze.(GQ)
35 You have given me the shield of your salvation,
and your right hand has supported me;
your help[t] has made me great.
36 You gave me a wide place for my steps under me,
and my feet did not slip.
37 I pursued my enemies and overtook them
and did not turn back until they were consumed.(GR)
38 I struck them down so that they were unable to rise;
they fell under my feet.(GS)
39 For you girded me with strength for the battle;
you made my assailants sink under me.(GT)
40 You made my enemies turn their backs to me,
and those who hated me I destroyed.(GU)
41 They cried for help, but there was no one to save them;
they cried to the Lord, but he did not answer them.(GV)
42 I beat them fine, like dust before the wind;
I cast them out like the mire of the streets.(GW)
43 You delivered me from strife with the peoples;[u]
you made me head of the nations;
people whom I had not known served me.(GX)
44 As soon as they heard of me, they obeyed me;
foreigners came cringing to me.
45 Foreigners lost heart
and came trembling out of their strongholds.(GY)
46 The Lord lives! Blessed be my rock,
and exalted be the God of my salvation,(GZ)
47 the God who gave me vengeance

and night to night declares knowledge.(HF)
3 There is no speech, nor are there words;
their voice is not heard;
4 yet their voice[w] goes out through all the earth
and their words to the end of the world.
In the heavens[x] he has set a tent for the sun,(HG)
5 which comes out like a bridegroom from his wedding canopy,
and like a strong man runs its course with joy.(HH)
6 Its rising is from the end of the heavens
and its circuit to the end of them,
and nothing is hid from its heat.(HI)
7 The law of the Lord is perfect,
reviving the soul;
the decrees of the Lord are sure,
making wise the simple;(HJ)
8 the precepts of the Lord are right,
rejoicing the heart;
the commandment of the Lord is clear,
enlightening the eyes;(HK)
9 the fear of the Lord is pure,
enduring forever;
the ordinances of the Lord are true
and righteous altogether.(HL)
10 More to be desired are they than gold,
even much fine gold;
sweeter also than honey
and drippings of the honeycomb.(HM)
11 Moreover, by them is your servant warned;
in keeping them there is great reward.(HN)
12 But who can detect one’s own errors?
Clear me from hidden faults.(HO)
13 Keep back your servant also from the insolent;[y]
do not let them have dominion over me.
Then I shall be blameless
and innocent of great transgression.(HP)
14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart
be acceptable to you,
O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.(HQ)

he will answer him from his holy heaven
with mighty victories by his right hand.(HW)

8 They will collapse and fall,
but we shall rise and stand upright.(HY)
9 Give victory to the king, O Lord;
answer us when we call.[z]

you set a crown of fine gold on his head.(IB)
4 He asked you for life; you gave it to him—
length of days forever and ever.(IC)
5 His glory is great through your help;
splendor and majesty you bestow on him.(ID)

you will aim at their faces with your bows.(IJ)
13 Be exalted, O Lord, in your strength!
We will sing and praise your power.(IK)
Psalm 22
Plea for Deliverance from Suffering and Hostility
To the leader: according to The Deer of the Dawn. A Psalm of David.
1 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
Why are you so far from helping me, from the words of my groaning?(IL)
2 O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer;
and by night but find no rest.(IM)
3 Yet you are holy,
enthroned on the praises of Israel.(IN)
4 In you our ancestors trusted;
they trusted, and you delivered them.
5 To you they cried and were saved;
in you they trusted and were not put to shame.(IO)
6 But I am a worm and not human,
scorned by others and despised by the people.(IP)
7 All who see me mock me;
they sneer at me; they shake their heads;(IQ)
8 “Commit your cause to the Lord; let him deliver—
let him rescue the one in whom he delights!”(IR)
9 Yet it was you who took me from the womb;
you kept me safe on my mother’s breast.(IS)
10 On you I was cast from my birth,
and since my mother bore me you have been my God.(IT)
11 Do not be far from me,
for trouble is near,
and there is no one to help.
12 Many bulls encircle me;
strong bulls of Bashan surround me;(IU)
13 they open wide their mouths at me,
like a ravening and roaring lion.(IV)
14 I am poured out like water,
and all my bones are out of joint;
my heart is like wax;
it is melted within my breast;(IW)
15 my mouth[aa] is dried up like a potsherd,
and my tongue sticks to my jaws;
you lay me in the dust of death.(IX)
16 For dogs are all around me;
a company of evildoers encircles me;
they bound my hands and feet.[ab](IY)
17 I can count all my bones.
They stare and gloat over me;
18 they divide my clothes among themselves,
and for my clothing they cast lots.(IZ)
19 But you, O Lord, do not be far away!
O my help, come quickly to my aid!
20 Deliver my soul from the sword,
my life[ac] from the power of the dog!(JA)
21 Save me from the mouth of the lion!
From the horns of the wild oxen you have rescued[ad] me.(JB)
22 I will tell of your name to my brothers and sisters;[ae]
in the midst of the congregation I will praise you:(JC)
23 You who fear the Lord, praise him!
All you offspring of Jacob, glorify him;
stand in awe of him, all you offspring of Israel!(JD)
24 For he did not despise or abhor
the affliction of the afflicted;
he did not hide his face from me[af]
but heard when I[ag] cried to him.(JE)
25 From you comes my praise in the great congregation;
my vows I will pay before those who fear him.(JF)
26 The poor[ah] shall eat and be satisfied;
those who seek him shall praise the Lord.
May your hearts live forever!(JG)
27 All the ends of the earth shall remember
and turn to the Lord,
and all the families of the nations
shall worship before him.[ai](JH)
28 For dominion belongs to the Lord,
and he rules over the nations.(JI)
29 To him,[aj] indeed, shall all who sleep in[ak] the earth bow down;
before him shall bow all who go down to the dust,
and I shall live for him.[al](JJ)
30 Posterity will serve him;
future generations will be told about the Lord(JK)
31 and[am] proclaim his deliverance to a people yet unborn,
saying that he has done it.(JL)
Psalm 23
The Divine Shepherd
A Psalm of David.
1 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.(JM)

3 he restores my soul.[ao]
He leads me in right paths[ap]
for his name’s sake.(JO)
4 Even though I walk through the darkest valley,[aq]
I fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.(JP)
5 You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies;
you anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.(JQ)
6 Surely[ar] goodness and mercy[as] shall follow me
all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord
my whole life long.[at](JR)

And who shall stand in his holy place?(JT)
4 Those who have clean hands and pure hearts,

and vindication from the God of their salvation.(JV)
6 Such is the company of those who seek him,
who seek the face of the God of Jacob.[au] Selah

The Lord, strong and mighty,
the Lord, mighty in battle.(JX)
9 Lift up your heads, O gates!
and be lifted up, O ancient doors,
that the King of glory may come in!(JY)
10 Who is this King of glory?
The Lord of hosts,
he is the King of glory. Selah
