Bible in 90 Days

An intensive Bible reading plan that walks through the entire Bible in 90 days.
Duration: 88 days
New English Translation (NET)
Version
Hosea 13:7 - Amos 9:10

So[a] I will pounce on them like a lion;[b]
like a leopard I will lurk by the path.
I will attack them like a bear robbed of her cubs—
I will rip open their chests.
I will devour them there like a lion—
like a wild animal would tear them apart.

Israel’s King Unable to Deliver the Nation

I will destroy you,[c] O Israel!
Who[d] is there to help you?
10 Where[e] then is your king,
that he may save you in all your cities?
Where are[f] your rulers for whom you asked, saying,
“Give me a king and princes”?
11 I granted[g] you a king in my anger,
and I will take him away in my wrath!

Israel’s Punishment Will Not Be Withheld Much Longer

12 The punishment[h] of Ephraim has been decreed;[i]
his punishment is being stored up for the future.
13 The labor pains of a woman will overtake him,
but the baby will lack wisdom;
when the time arrives,
he will not come out of the womb!

The Lord Will Not Relent from the Threatened Judgment

14 Will I deliver them from the power of Sheol? No, I will not![j]
Will I redeem them from death? No, I will not!
O Death, bring on your plagues![k]
O Sheol, bring on your destruction![l]
My eyes will not show any compassion![m]

The Capital of the Northern Empire Will Be Destroyed

15 Even though he flourishes like a reed plant,[n]
a scorching east wind will come,
a wind from the Lord rising up from the desert.
As a result, his spring will dry up;[o]
his well will become dry.
That wind[p] will spoil all his delightful foods
in the containers in his storehouse.
16 (14:1)[q] Samaria will be held guilty,[r]
because she rebelled against her God.
They will fall by the sword;
their infants will be dashed to the ground—
their[s] pregnant women will be ripped open.

Prophetic Call to Genuine Repentance

14 Return, O Israel, to the Lord your God,
for your sin has been your downfall![t]
Return to the Lord and repent![u]
Say to him: “Completely[v] forgive our iniquity;
accept[w] our penitential prayer,[x]
that we may offer the praise of our lips as sacrificial bulls.[y]
Assyria cannot save us;
we will not ride warhorses.
We will never again say, ‘Our gods,’
to what our own hands have made.
For only you will show compassion to Orphan Israel!”[z]

Divine Promise to Relent from Judgment and to Restore Blessings

“I will heal their waywardness[aa]
and love them freely,[ab]
for my anger will turn away[ac] from them.
I will be like the dew to Israel;
he will blossom like a lily,
he will send down his roots like a cedar of[ad] Lebanon.
His young shoots will grow;
his splendor will be like an olive tree,
his fragrance like a cedar of Lebanon.
People will reside again[ae] in his shade;
they will plant and harvest grain in abundance.[af]
They will blossom like a vine,
and his fame will be like the wine from Lebanon.
O Ephraim, I do not want to have anything to do[ag] with idols anymore!
I will answer him and care for him.
I am like[ah] a luxuriant cypress tree;[ai]
your fruitfulness comes from me!”[aj]

Concluding Exhortation

Who is wise?
Let him discern[ak] these things!
Who is discerning?
Let him understand them!
For the ways of the Lord are right;
the godly walk in them,
but in them the rebellious stumble.

Introduction

This[al] is the Lord’s message that came to Joel[am] the son of Pethuel:

A Locust Plague Foreshadows the Day of the Lord

Listen to this, you elders;[an]
pay attention,[ao] all inhabitants of the land.
Has anything like this ever happened in your whole life[ap]
or in the lifetime[aq] of your ancestors?[ar]
Tell your children[as] about it,
have your children tell their children,
and their children the following generation.[at]
What the gazam-locust left the ‘arbeh-locust consumed,[au]
what the ‘arbeh-locust left the yeleq-locust consumed,
and what the yeleq-locust left the hasil-locust consumed.[av]
Wake up, you drunkards,[aw] and weep!

Wail, all you wine drinkers,[ax]
because the sweet wine[ay] has been taken away[az] from you.[ba]
For a nation[bb] has invaded[bc] my land,
mighty and without number.
Their teeth are lion’s teeth;
they have the fangs of a lioness.[bd]
They[be] have destroyed my vines;[bf]
they have turned my fig trees into mere splinters.
They have completely stripped off the bark[bg] and thrown it aside;
the twigs are stripped bare.[bh]

A Call to Lament

Wail[bi] like a young virgin[bj] clothed in sackcloth,
lamenting the death of[bk] her husband to be.[bl]
No one brings grain offerings or drink offerings
to the temple[bm] of the Lord anymore.[bn]
So the priests, those who serve the Lord, are in mourning.
10 The crops of the fields[bo] have been destroyed.[bp]
The ground is in mourning because the grain has perished.
The fresh wine has dried up;
the olive oil languishes.
11 Be distressed,[bq] farmers;
wail, vinedressers, over the wheat and the barley.
For the harvest of the field has perished.
12 The vine has dried up;
the fig tree languishes—
the pomegranate, date, and apple[br] as well.
In fact,[bs] all the trees of the field have dried up.
Indeed, the joy of the people[bt] has dried up!
13 Get dressed[bu] and lament, you priests.

Wail, you who minister at the altar.
Come, spend the night in sackcloth, you servants of my God,
because no one brings grain offerings or drink offerings
to the temple of your God anymore.[bv]
14 Announce a holy fast;[bw]
proclaim a sacred assembly.
Gather the elders and[bx] all the inhabitants of the land
to the temple of the Lord your God,
and cry out to the Lord.
15 How awful that day will be![by]
For the day of the Lord is near;
it will come as destruction from the Divine Destroyer.[bz]
16 Our food has been cut off right before our eyes![ca]
There is no longer any joy or gladness in the temple of our God.[cb]
17 The grains of seed[cc] have shriveled beneath their shovels.[cd]
Storehouses have been decimated,
and granaries have been torn down,
because the grain has dried up.
18 Listen to the cattle groan![ce]
The herds of livestock wander around in confusion[cf]
because they have no pasture.
Even the flocks of sheep are suffering.
19 To you, O Lord, I call out for help,[cg]

for fire[ch] has burned up[ci] the pastures of the wilderness,
flames have razed[cj] all the trees in the fields.
20 Even the wild animals[ck] cry out to you,[cl]
for the river beds[cm] have dried up;
fire has destroyed[cn] the pastures of the wilderness.[co]

The Locusts’ Devastation

Blow the trumpet[cp] in Zion;
sound the alarm signal on my holy mountain!
Let all the inhabitants of the land shake with fear,
for the day of the Lord is about to come.
Indeed,[cq] it is near![cr]
It will be[cs] a day of dreadful darkness,[ct]
a day of foreboding storm clouds,[cu]
like blackness[cv] spread over the mountains.
It is a huge and powerful army[cw]
there has never been anything like it ever before,
and there will not be anything like it for many generations to come![cx]
Like fire they devour everything in their path;[cy]

a flame blazes behind them.
The land looks like the Garden of Eden[cz] before them,
but behind them there is only a desolate wilderness—
for nothing escapes them![da]
They look like horses;[db]
they charge ahead like war horses.
They sound like[dc] chariots rumbling[dd] over mountain tops,
like the crackling[de] of blazing fire consuming stubble,
like the noise of[df] a mighty army[dg] being drawn up for battle.[dh]
People[di] writhe in fear when they see them.[dj]
All their faces turn pale with fright.[dk]
They[dl] charge[dm] like warriors;
they scale walls like soldiers.[dn]
Each one proceeds on his course;
they do not alter[do] their path.
They do not jostle one another;[dp]
each of them marches straight ahead.[dq]
They burst through[dr] the city defenses[ds]
and do not break ranks.
They rush into[dt] the city;
they scale[du] its walls.
They climb up into the houses;
they go in through the windows like a thief.
10 The earth quakes[dv] before them;[dw]
the sky reverberates.[dx]
The sun and the moon grow dark;
the stars refuse to shine.[dy]
11 The voice of the Lord thunders[dz] as he leads his army.[ea]
Indeed, his warriors[eb] are innumerable;[ec]
Surely his command is carried out![ed]
Yes, the day of the Lord is awesome[ee]
and very terrifying—who can survive[ef] it?

An Appeal for Repentance

12 “Yet even now,” the Lord says,
“return to me with all your heart—
with fasting, weeping, and mourning.
13 Tear your hearts,[eg]
not just your garments.”
Return to the Lord your God,
for he is merciful and compassionate,
slow to anger and boundless in loyal love[eh]—often relenting from calamitous punishment.[ei]
14 Who knows?
Perhaps he will be compassionate and grant a reprieve,[ej]
and leave blessing in his wake[ek]
a meal offering and a drink offering for you to offer to the Lord your God![el]
15 Blow the trumpet[em] in Zion.

Announce a holy fast;
proclaim a sacred assembly.
16 Gather the people;
sanctify an assembly!
Gather the elders;
gather the children and the nursing infants.
Let the bridegroom come out from his bedroom
and the bride from her private quarters.[en]
17 Let the priests, those who serve the Lord, weep
from the vestibule all the way back to the altar.[eo]
Let them say, “Have pity, O Lord, on your people;
please do not turn over your inheritance to be mocked,
to become a proverb[ep] among the nations.
Why should it be said[eq] among the peoples,
‘Where is their God?’

The Lord’s Response

18 Then the Lord became zealous[er] for his land;
he had compassion on his people.
19 The Lord responded[es] to his people,
“Look! I am about to restore your grain[et]
as well as fresh wine and olive oil.
You will be fully satisfied.[eu]
I will never again make you an object of mockery among the nations.
20 I will remove the one from the north[ev] far from you.
I will drive him out to a dry and desolate place.
Those in front will be driven eastward into the Dead Sea,[ew]
and those in back westward into the Mediterranean Sea.[ex]
His stench will rise up as a foul smell.”[ey]
Indeed, the Lord[ez] has accomplished great things!
21 Do not fear, my land.

Rejoice and be glad,
because the Lord has accomplished great things!
22 Do not fear, wild animals.[fa]
For the pastures of the wilderness are again green with grass.
Indeed, the trees bear their fruit;
the fig tree and the vine yield to their fullest.[fb]
23 Citizens of Zion,[fc] rejoice!
Be glad because of what the Lord your God has done![fd]
For he has given to you the early rains[fe] as vindication.
He has sent[ff] to you the rains—
both the early and the late rains[fg] as formerly.
24 The threshing floors are full of grain;
the vats overflow with fresh wine and olive oil.
25 I will make up for the years[fh]
that the ‘arbeh-locust[fi] consumed your crops[fj]
the yeleq-locust, the hasil-locust, and the gazam-locust—
my great army[fk] that I sent against you.
26 You will have plenty to eat,
and your hunger will be fully satisfied;[fl]
you will praise the name of the Lord your God,
who has acted wondrously in your behalf.
My people will never again be put to shame.
27 You will be convinced that I am in the midst of Israel.
I am the Lord your God; there is no other.
My people will never again be put to shame.

An Outpouring of the Spirit

28 (3:1)[fm] After all of this[fn]
I will pour out my Spirit[fo] on all kinds of people.[fp]
Your sons and daughters will prophesy.
Your elderly will have prophetic dreams;[fq]
your young men will see visions.
29 Even on male and female servants
I will pour out my Spirit in those days.
30 I will produce portents both in the sky[fr] and on the earth—
blood, fire, and columns of smoke.
31 The sunlight will be turned to darkness
and the moon to the color of blood,[fs]
before the day of the Lord comes—
that great and terrible day!
32 It will so happen that
everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be delivered.[ft]
For on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there will be those who survive,[fu]
just as the Lord has promised;
the remnant[fv] will be those whom the Lord will call.[fw]

The Lord Plans to Judge the Nations

(4:1)[fx] For look! In those[fy] days and at that time
I will return the exiles[fz] to Judah and Jerusalem.
Then I will gather all the nations,
and bring them down to the Valley of Jehoshaphat.[ga]
I will enter into judgment[gb] against them there
concerning my people Israel who are my inheritance,[gc]
whom they scattered among the nations.
They partitioned my land,
and they cast lots for my people.
They traded[gd] a boy for a prostitute;
they sold a little girl for wine so they could drink.[ge]
Why are you doing these things to me, Tyre and Sidon?[gf]
Are you trying to get even with me, land of Philistia?[gg]
If you are, I will very quickly repay you for what you have done![gh]
For you took my silver and my gold
and brought my precious valuables to your own palaces.[gi]
You sold Judeans and Jerusalemites to the Greeks,
removing them far from their own country.[gj]
Look! I am rousing them from that place to which you sold them.
I will repay you for what you have done![gk]
I will sell your sons and daughters to[gl] the people of Judah.[gm]
They will sell them to the Sabeans,[gn] a nation far away.
Indeed, the Lord has spoken.

Judgment in the Valley of Jehoshaphat

Proclaim this among the nations:
“Prepare for a holy war!
Call out the warriors!
Let all these fighting men approach and attack![go]
10 Beat your plowshares[gp] into swords,
and your pruning hooks[gq] into spears.[gr]
Let the weak say, ‘I too am a warrior!’[gs]
11 Lend your aid[gt] and come,
all you surrounding nations,
and gather yourselves[gu] to that place.”
Bring down, O Lord, your warriors![gv]
12 “Let the nations be roused and let them go up
to the Valley of Jehoshaphat,
for there I will sit in judgment on all the surrounding nations.
13 Rush forth with[gw] the sickle, for the harvest is ripe!
Come, stomp the grapes,[gx] for the winepress is full!
The vats overflow.
Indeed, their evil is great!”[gy]
14 Crowds, great crowds are in the Valley of Decision,

for the day of the Lord is near in the Valley of Decision![gz]
15 The sun and moon are darkened;
the stars withhold[ha] their brightness.
16 The Lord roars from Zion;
from Jerusalem his voice bellows out.[hb]
The heavens[hc] and the earth shake.
But the Lord is a refuge for his people;
he is a stronghold for the citizens[hd] of Israel.

The Lord’s Presence in Zion

17 “You will be convinced[he] that I the Lord am your God,
dwelling on Zion, my holy mountain.
Jerusalem will be holy—
conquering armies[hf] will no longer pass through it.
18 “On that day[hg] the mountains will drip with sweet wine,[hh]
and the hills will flow with milk.[hi]
All the dry stream beds[hj] of Judah will flow with water.
A spring will flow out from the temple[hk] of the Lord,
watering the Valley of Acacia Trees.[hl]
19 Egypt will be desolate
and Edom will be a desolate wilderness,
because of the violence they did to the people of Judah,[hm]
in whose land they shed innocent blood.
20 But Judah will reside securely forever,
and Jerusalem will be secure[hn] from one generation to the next.
21 I will avenge[ho] their blood that I had not previously acquitted.
It is the Lord who dwells in Zion!

Introduction

The following is a record of what Amos prophesied.[hp] He[hq] was one of the herdsmen from Tekoa. These prophecies about Israel were revealed to him[hr] during the time of[hs] King Uzziah of Judah and[ht] King Jeroboam son of Joash of Israel, two years before the earthquake.[hu]

God Will Judge the Surrounding Nations

Amos[hv] said:

“The Lord comes roaring[hw] out of Zion;
from Jerusalem he comes bellowing![hx]
The shepherds’ pastures wilt;[hy]
the summit of Carmel[hz] withers.”[ia]

This is what the Lord says:

“Because Damascus has committed three crimes[ib]
make that four![ic]—I will not revoke my
decree of judgment.[id]
They ripped through Gilead like threshing sledges with iron teeth.[ie]
So I will set Hazael’s house[if] on fire;
fire[ig] will consume Ben Hadad’s[ih] fortresses.
I will break the bar on the gate[ii] of Damascus.
I will remove[ij] the ruler[ik] from Wicked Valley,[il]
the one who holds the royal scepter from Beth Eden.[im]
The people of Aram will be deported to Kir.”[in]
The Lord has spoken!

This is what the Lord says:

“Because Gaza[io] has committed three crimes[ip]
make that four![iq]—I will not revoke my decree of judgment.[ir]
They deported a whole community[is] and sold them[it] to Edom.
So I will set Gaza’s city wall[iu] on fire;
fire[iv] will consume her fortresses.
I will remove[iw] the ruler[ix] from Ashdod,[iy]
the one who holds the royal scepter from Ashkelon.[iz]
I will strike Ekron[ja] with my hand;[jb]
the rest of the Philistines will also die.”[jc]
The Sovereign Lord has spoken!

This is what the Lord says:

“Because Tyre has committed three crimes[jd]
make that four[je]—I will not revoke my decree of judgment.[jf]
They sold[jg] a whole community[jh] to Edom;
they failed to observe[ji] a treaty of brotherhood.[jj]
10 So I will set fire to Tyre’s city wall;[jk]
fire[jl] will consume her fortresses.”

11 This is what the Lord says:

“Because Edom has committed three crimes[jm]
make that four[jn]—I will not revoke my decree of judgment.[jo]
He chased his brother[jp] with a sword;
he wiped out his allies.[jq]
In his anger he tore them apart without stopping to rest;[jr]
in his fury he relentlessly attacked them.[js]
12 So I will set Teman[jt] on fire;
fire[ju] will consume Bozrah’s[jv] fortresses.”

13 This is what the Lord says:

“Because the Ammonites have committed three crimes[jw]
make that four[jx]—I will not revoke my decree of judgment.[jy]
They ripped open Gilead’s pregnant women[jz]
so they could expand their territory.
14 So I will set fire to Rabbah’s[ka] city wall;[kb]
fire[kc] will consume her fortresses.
War cries will be heard on the day of battle;[kd]
a strong gale will blow on the day of the windstorm.[ke]
15 Ammon’s[kf] king will be deported;[kg]
he and his officials[kh] will be carried off[ki] together.”
The Lord has spoken

This is what the Lord says:

“Because Moab has committed three crimes[kj]
make that four[kk]—I will not revoke my decree of judgment.[kl]
They burned the bones of Edom’s king into lime.[km]
So I will set Moab on fire,[kn]
and it will consume Kerioth’s[ko] fortresses.
Moab will perish[kp] in the heat of battle[kq]
amid war cries and the blaring[kr] of the ram’s horn.[ks]
I will remove[kt] Moab’s leader;[ku]
I will kill all Moab’s[kv] officials[kw] with him.”
The Lord has spoken!

This is what the Lord says:

“Because Judah has committed three covenant transgressions[kx]
make that four[ky]—I will not revoke my decree of judgment.[kz]
They rejected the Lord’s law;[la]
they did not obey his commands.
Their false gods,[lb]
to which their fathers were loyal,[lc]
led them astray.
So I will set Judah on fire,
and it will consume Jerusalem’s fortresses.”

God Will Judge Israel

This is what the Lord says:

“Because Israel has committed three covenant transgressions[ld]
make that four[le]—I will not revoke my decree of judgment.[lf]
They sold the innocent[lg] for silver,
the needy for a pair of sandals.[lh]
They trample[li] on the dirt-covered heads of the poor;[lj]
they push the destitute away.[lk]
A man and his father go to the same girl;[ll]
in this way they show disrespect for[lm] my moral purity.[ln]
They stretch out on clothing seized as collateral;
they do so right[lo] beside every altar!
They drink wine bought with the fines they have levied;
they do so right in the temple[lp] of their God![lq]
For Israel’s sake I destroyed the Amorites.[lr]
They were as tall as cedars[ls]
and as strong as oaks,
but I destroyed the fruit on their branches[lt]
and their roots in the ground.[lu]
10 I brought you up from the land of Egypt;
I led you through the wilderness for forty years
so you could take the Amorites’ land as your own.
11 I made some of your sons prophets
and some of your young men Nazirites.[lv]
Is this not true, you Israelites?”
The Lord is speaking.
12 “But you made the Nazirites drink wine;[lw]
you commanded the prophets, ‘Do not prophesy!’
13 Look! I will press you down,
like a cart loaded down with grain presses down.[lx]
14 Fast runners will find no place to hide;[ly]
strong men will have no strength left;[lz]
warriors will not be able to save their lives.
15 Archers[ma] will not hold their ground;[mb]
fast runners will not save their lives,
nor will those who ride horses.[mc]
16 Bravehearted[md] warriors will run away naked in that day.”
The Lord is speaking.

Every Effect has its Cause

Listen, you Israelites, to this message that the Lord is proclaiming against[me] you! This message is for the entire clan I brought up[mf] from the land of Egypt:

“I have chosen[mg] you alone from all the clans of the earth.
Therefore I will punish you for all your sins.”
Do two walk together without having met?[mh]
Does a lion roar in the woods if he has not cornered his prey?[mi]
Does a young lion bellow from his den if he has not caught something?
Does a bird swoop down into a trap on the ground if there is no bait?
Does a trap spring up from the ground unless it has surely caught something?
If an alarm sounds[mj] in a city, do people not fear?[mk]
If disaster overtakes a[ml] city, is the Lord not responsible?[mm]
Certainly the Sovereign Lord does nothing without first revealing his plan to his servants the prophets.
A lion has roared![mn] Who is not afraid?
The Sovereign Lord has spoken. Who can refuse to prophesy?[mo]

Samaria Will Fall

Make this announcement in[mp] the fortresses of Ashdod
and in the fortresses in the land of Egypt.
Say this:
“Gather on the hills around Samaria![mq]
Observe the many acts of violence[mr] taking place within the city,[ms]
the oppressive deeds[mt] occurring in it.”[mu]
10 “They do not know how to do what is right,” the Lord says.

“They store up[mv] the spoils of destructive violence[mw] in their fortresses.
11 Therefore,” says the Sovereign Lord, “an enemy will encircle the land.[mx]
He will take away your power;[my]
your fortresses will be looted.”

12 This is what the Lord says:

“Just as a shepherd salvages from the lion’s mouth a couple of leg bones or a piece of an ear,
so the Israelites who live in Samaria will be salvaged.[mz]
They will be left with just a corner of a bed,[na]
and a part[nb] of a couch.
13 Listen and warn[nc] the family[nd] of Jacob!”[ne]
The Sovereign Lord, the God who commands armies,[nf] is speaking!
14 “Certainly when[ng] I punish Israel for their[nh] covenant transgressions,[ni]

I will destroy[nj] Bethel’s altars.
The horns[nk] of the altar will be cut off and fall to the ground.
15 I will destroy both the winter and summer houses.[nl]
The houses filled with ivory[nm] will be ruined,
the great[nn] houses will be swept away.”[no]
The Lord is speaking!
Listen to this message, you cows of Bashan[np] who live on Mount Samaria!

You[nq] oppress the poor;
you crush the needy.
You say to your[nr] husbands,
“Bring us more to drink!”[ns]
The Sovereign Lord confirms this oath by his own holy character:[nt]
“Certainly the time is approaching[nu]
when you will be carried away[nv] in baskets,[nw]
every last one of you[nx] in fishermen’s pots.[ny]
Each of you will go straight through the gaps in the walls;[nz]
you will be thrown out[oa] toward Harmon.”[ob]
The Lord is speaking.

Israel has an Appointment with God

“Go to Bethel[oc] and rebel![od]
At Gilgal[oe] rebel some more!
Bring your sacrifices in[of] the morning,
your tithes on[og] the third day!
Burn a thank offering of bread made with yeast![oh]
Make a public display of your voluntary offerings![oi]
For you love to do this, you Israelites.”
The Sovereign Lord is speaking.
“But surely I gave[oj] you no food to eat in all your cities;

you lacked food everywhere you lived.[ok]
Still you did not come back to me.”
The Lord is speaking
“I withheld rain from you three months before the harvest.[ol]

I gave rain to one city, but not to another.
One field[om] would get rain, but the field that received no rain dried up.
People from[on] two or three cities staggered into one city to get[oo] water,
but remained thirsty.[op]
Still you did not come back to me.”
The Lord is speaking
“I destroyed your crops[oq] with blight and disease.

Locusts kept[or] devouring your orchards,[os] vineyards, fig trees, and olive trees.
Still you did not come back to me.”
The Lord is speaking
10 “I sent against you a plague like one of the Egyptian plagues.[ot]

I killed your young men with the sword,
along with the horses you had captured.
I made the stench from the corpses[ou] rise up into your nostrils.
Still you did not come back to me.”
The Lord is speaking
11 “I overthrew some of you the way God[ov] overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah.[ow]

You were like a burning stick[ox] snatched from the flames.
Still you did not come back to me.”
The Lord is speaking
12 “Therefore this is what I will do to you, Israel.

Because I will do this to you,
prepare to meet your God, Israel!”[oy]
13 For here he is!

He[oz] formed the mountains and created the wind.
He reveals[pa] his plans[pb] to men.
He turns the dawn into darkness[pc]
and marches on the heights of the earth.
The Lord God of Heaven’s Armies[pd] is his name!

Death is Imminent

Listen to this funeral song I am ready to sing about you,[pe] family[pf] of Israel:

“The virgin[pg] Israel has fallen down and will not get up again.
She is abandoned on her own land
with no one to help her get up.”[ph]

The Sovereign Lord says this:

“The city that marches out with a thousand soldiers[pi] will have only a hundred left;
the town[pj] that marches out with a hundred soldiers[pk] will have only ten left for the family of Israel.”[pl]

The Lord says this to the family[pm] of Israel:

“Seek me[pn] so you can live!
Do not seek Bethel.[po]
Do not visit Gilgal.
Do not journey down[pp] to Beer Sheba.
For the people of Gilgal[pq] will certainly be carried into exile,[pr]
and Bethel will become a place where disaster abounds.”[ps]
Seek the Lord so you can live!

Otherwise he will break out[pt] like fire against Joseph’s[pu] family;[pv]
the fire[pw] will consume
and no one will be able to quench it and save Bethel.[px]
The Israelites[py] turn justice into bitterness;[pz]
they throw what is fair and right[qa] to the ground.[qb]
But there is one who made the constellations Pleiades and Orion;

he can turn the darkness into morning
and daylight[qc] into night.
He summons the water of the seas
and pours it out on the earth’s surface.
The Lord is his name!
He flashes[qd] destruction down upon the strong
so that destruction overwhelms[qe] the fortified places.
10 The Israelites[qf] hate anyone who arbitrates at the city gate;[qg]

they despise anyone who speaks honestly.
11 Therefore, because you make the poor pay taxes on their crops[qh]
and exact a grain tax from them,
you will not live in the houses you built with chiseled stone,
nor will you drink the wine from the fine[qi] vineyards you planted.[qj]
12 Certainly[qk] I am aware of[ql] your many rebellious acts[qm]
and your numerous sins.
You[qn] torment the innocent, you take bribes,
and you deny justice to[qo] the needy at the city gate.[qp]
13 For this reason whoever is smart[qq] keeps quiet[qr] in such a time,
for it is an evil[qs] time.
14 Seek good and not evil so you can live!

Then the Lord God of Heaven’s Armies just might be with you,
as you claim he is.
15 Hate what is wrong, love what is right.
Promote[qt] justice at the city gate.[qu]
Maybe the Lord God of Heaven’s Armies will have mercy on[qv] those who are left from[qw] Joseph.[qx]

16 Because of Israel’s sins[qy] this is what the Lord, the Lord God of Heaven’s Armies,[qz] says:

“In all the squares there will be wailing,
in all the streets they will mourn the dead.[ra]
They will tell the field workers[rb] to lament
and the professional mourners[rc] to wail.
17 In all the vineyards there will be wailing,
for I will pass through[rd] your midst,” says the Lord.

The Lord Demands Justice

18 Woe[re] to those who wish for the day of the Lord!
Why do you want the Lord’s day of judgment to come?
It will bring darkness, not light.
19 Disaster will be inescapable,[rf]
as if a man ran from a lion only to meet a bear,
then escaped into[rg] a house,
leaned his hand against the wall,
and was bitten by a poisonous snake.
20 Don’t you realize the Lord’s day of judgment will bring[rh] darkness, not light—
gloomy blackness, not bright light?
21 “I absolutely despise[ri] your festivals!

I get no pleasure[rj] from your religious assemblies.
22 Even if you offer me burnt and grain offerings,[rk] I will not be satisfied;
I will not look with favor on your peace offerings of fattened calves.[rl]
23 Take away from me your[rm] noisy songs;
I don’t want to hear the music of your stringed instruments.[rn]
24 Justice must flow like torrents of water,
righteous actions[ro] like a stream that never dries up.
25 You did not bring me[rp] sacrifices and grain offerings during the forty years you spent in the wilderness, family[rq] of Israel.

26 You will pick up your images[rr] of Sikkuth,[rs] your king,[rt]
and Kiyyun,[ru] your star god, which you made for yourselves,
27 and I will drive you into exile beyond Damascus,” says the Lord.
He is called the God of Heaven’s Armies.

The Party is over for the Rich

Woe[rv] to those who live in ease in Zion,[rw]
to those who feel secure on Mount Samaria.
They think of themselves as[rx] the elite class of the best nation.
The family[ry] of Israel looks to them for leadership.[rz]
They say to the people:[sa]
“Journey over to Calneh and look at it;
then go from there to Hamath-Rabbah;[sb]
then go down to Gath of the Philistines.
Are they superior to our two[sc] kingdoms?
Is their territory larger than yours?”[sd]
You refuse to believe a day of disaster will come,[se]
but you establish a reign of violence.[sf]
They lie around on beds decorated with ivory,[sg]
and sprawl out on their couches.
They eat lambs from the flock,
and calves from the middle of the pen.
They sing[sh] to the tune of[si] stringed instruments;[sj]
like David they invent[sk] musical instruments.
They drink wine from sacrificial bowls,[sl]
and pour the very best oils on themselves.[sm]
Yet they are not concerned over[sn] the ruin[so] of Joseph.
Therefore they will now be the first to go into exile,[sp]
and the religious banquets[sq] where they sprawl on couches[sr] will end.
The Sovereign Lord confirms this oath by his very own life.[ss]

The Lord God of Heaven’s Armies is speaking:
“I despise Jacob’s arrogance;
I hate their[st] fortresses.
I will hand over to their enemies[su] the city of Samaria[sv] and everything in it.”

If ten men are left in one house, they too will die. 10 When their close relatives, the ones who will burn the corpses,[sw] pick up their bodies to remove the bones from the house, they will say to anyone who is in the inner rooms of the house, “Is anyone else with you?” He will respond, “No one.” Then he will say, “Hush! Don’t invoke the Lord’s name!”[sx]

11 Indeed, look! The Lord is giving the command.[sy]

He will smash the large house to bits
and the small house into little pieces.
12 Can horses run on rocky cliffs?
Can one plow the sea with oxen?[sz]
Yet you have turned justice into a poisonous plant,
and the fruit of righteous actions into a bitter plant.[ta]
13 You are happy because you conquered Lo Debar.[tb]
You say, “Did we not conquer Karnaim[tc] by our own power?”
14 “Look! I am about to bring[td] a nation against you, family[te] of Israel,”
the Lord, the God who commands armies, is speaking.
“They will oppress[tf] you all the way from Lebo Hamath[tg] to the stream of the rift valley.”[th]

Symbolic Visions of Judgment

The Sovereign Lord showed me this: I saw[ti] him making locusts just as the crops planted late[tj] were beginning to sprout. (The crops planted late sprout after the royal harvest.[tk]) When they had completely consumed the earth’s vegetation, I said,

“Sovereign Lord, forgive Israel![tl]
How can Jacob survive?[tm]
He is too weak!”[tn]

The Lord decided not to do this.[to] “It will not happen,” the Lord said.

The Sovereign Lord showed me this: I saw[tp] the Sovereign Lord summoning a shower of fire.[tq] It consumed the great deep and devoured the fields. I said,

“Sovereign Lord, stop!
How can Jacob survive?[tr]
He is too weak!”[ts]

The Lord decided not to do this.[tt] The Sovereign Lord said, “This will not happen either.”

He showed me this: I saw[tu] the Lord[tv] standing by a tin[tw] wall holding tin in his hand. The Lord said to me, “What do you see, Amos?” I said, “Tin.” The Lord then said,

“Look, I am about to place tin[tx] among my people Israel.
I will no longer overlook their sin.[ty]
Isaac’s centers of worship[tz] will become desolate;
Israel’s holy places will be in ruins.
I will attack Jeroboam’s dynasty with the sword.”[ua]

Amos Confronts a Priest

10 Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent this message[ub] to King Jeroboam of Israel: “Amos is conspiring against you in the very heart of the kingdom of Israel![uc] The land cannot endure all his prophecies.[ud] 11 As a matter of fact,[ue] Amos is saying this: ‘Jeroboam will die by the sword and Israel will certainly be carried into exile[uf] away from its land.’”

12 Amaziah then said to Amos, “Leave, you visionary![ug] Run away to the land of Judah. Earn your living[uh] and prophesy there! 13 Don’t prophesy at Bethel any longer, for a royal temple and palace are here.”[ui]

14 Amos replied[uj] to Amaziah, “I was not a prophet by profession.[uk] No,[ul] I was a herdsman who also took care of[um] sycamore fig trees.[un] 15 Then the Lord took me from tending[uo] flocks and gave me this commission,[up] ‘Go! Prophesy to my people Israel.’ 16 So now listen to the Lord’s message! You say, ‘Don’t prophesy against Israel! Don’t preach[uq] against the family of Isaac!’

17 “Therefore this is what the Lord says:

‘Your wife will become a prostitute in the streets[ur]
and your sons and daughters will die violently.[us]
Your land will be given to others[ut]
and you will die in a foreign[uu] land.
Israel will certainly be carried into exile[uv] away from its land.’”

More Visions and Messages of Judgment

The Sovereign Lord showed me this: I saw[uw] a basket of summer fruit.[ux] He said, “What do you see, Amos?” I replied, “A basket of summer fruit.” Then the Lord said to me, “The end[uy] has come for my people Israel! I will no longer overlook their sins.[uz]

The women singing in the temple[va] will wail in that day.”

The Sovereign Lord is speaking.
“There will be many corpses littered everywhere![vb] Be quiet!”
Listen to this, you who trample[vc] the needy
and do away with[vd] the destitute in the land.

You say,

“When will the new moon festival[ve] be over,[vf] so we can sell grain?
When will the Sabbath end,[vg] so we can open up the grain bins?[vh]
We’re eager[vi] to sell less for a higher price,[vj]
and to cheat the buyer with rigged scales![vk]
We’re eager to trade silver for the poor,[vl]
a pair of sandals[vm] for the needy.
We want to mix in some chaff with the grain!”[vn]

The Lord confirms this oath[vo] by the arrogance of Jacob:[vp]

“I swear[vq] I will never forget all you have done![vr]
Because of this the earth[vs] will quake,[vt]
and all who live in it will mourn.
The whole earth[vu] will rise like the Nile River,[vv]
it will surge upward[vw] and then grow calm,[vx] like the Nile in Egypt.[vy]
In that day,” says the Sovereign Lord, “I will make the sun set at noon
and make the earth dark in the middle of the day.[vz]
10 I will turn your festivals into funerals[wa]
and all your songs into funeral dirges.
I will make everyone wear funeral clothes[wb]
and cause every head to be shaved bald.[wc]
I will make you mourn as if you had lost your only son;[wd]
when it ends it will indeed have been a bitter day.[we]
11 Be certain of this,[wf] the time is[wg] coming,” says the Sovereign Lord,
“when I will send a famine through the land—
not a shortage of food or water
but an end to divine revelation.[wh]
12 People[wi] will stagger from sea to sea,[wj]
and from the north around to the east.
They will wander about looking for a message from the Lord,
but they will not find any.[wk]
13 In that day your[wl] beautiful young women[wm] and your[wn] young men will faint from thirst.[wo]
14 These are the ones who now take oaths[wp] in the name of the sinful idol goddess[wq] of Samaria.
They vow,[wr] ‘As surely as your god[ws] lives, O Dan,’ or, ‘As surely as your beloved one[wt] lives, O Beer Sheba!’
But they will fall down and not get up again.”

I saw the Lord[wu] standing by the altar[wv] and he said,

“Strike the tops of the support pillars,[ww] so the thresholds shake!
Knock them down on the heads of all the people,[wx]
and I will kill the survivors[wy] with the sword.
No one will be able to run away;[wz]
no one will be able to escape.[xa]
Even if they could dig down into the netherworld,[xb]
my hand would pull them up from there.
Even if they could climb up to heaven,
I would drag them down from there.
Even if they were to hide on the top of Mount Carmel,
I would hunt them down and take them from there.
Even if they tried to hide from me[xc] at the bottom of the sea,
from there[xd] I would command the Sea Serpent[xe] to bite them.
Even when their enemies drive them into captivity,[xf]
from there[xg] I will command the sword to kill them.
I will not let them out of my sight;
they will experience disaster, not prosperity.”[xh]
The Sovereign Lord of Heaven’s Armies will do this.[xi]

He touches the earth and it dissolves;[xj]
all who live on it mourn.
The whole earth[xk] rises like the Nile River,[xl]
and then grows calm[xm] like the Nile in Egypt.[xn]
He builds the upper rooms of his palace[xo] in heaven
and sets its foundation supports[xp] on the earth.[xq]
He summons the water of the sea
and pours it out on the earth’s surface.
The Lord is his name.
“You Israelites are just like the Ethiopians in my sight,”[xr] says the Lord.
“Certainly I brought Israel up from the land of Egypt,
but I also brought the Philistines from Caphtor[xs] and the Arameans from Kir.[xt]
Look, the Sovereign Lord is watching[xu] the sinful nation,[xv]
and I will destroy it from the face of the earth.
But I will not completely destroy the family[xw] of Jacob,” says the Lord.
“For look, I am giving a command
and I will shake the family of Israel together with all the nations.
It will resemble a sieve being shaken,
when not even a pebble falls to the ground.[xx]
10 All the sinners among my people will die by the sword—
the ones who say, ‘Disaster will not come near, it will not confront us.’
