Job 42 - Psalm 24

Job Replies to the Lord

42 Then Job replied to the Lord:

I[a] know that You can do anything
and no plan of Yours can be thwarted.(A)
You asked, “Who is this who conceals My counsel with ignorance?”(B)
Surely I spoke about things I did not understand,
things too wonderful for me to[b] know.(C)
You said, “Listen now, and I will speak.
When I question(D) you, you will inform Me.”
I had heard rumors about You,
but now my eyes(E) have seen You.
Therefore I take back my words
and repent in dust and ashes.[c]

After the Lord had finished speaking[d] to Job, He said to Eliphaz the Temanite: “I am angry with you and your two friends, for you have not spoken the truth about Me, as My servant Job has. Now take seven bulls and seven rams, go to My servant Job, and offer a burnt offering for yourselves. Then My servant Job will pray for you.(F) I will surely accept his prayer and not deal with you as your folly deserves. For you have not spoken the truth about Me, as My servant Job has.” Then Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite went and did as the Lord had told them, and the Lord accepted Job’s prayer.

God Restores Job

10 After Job had prayed for his friends, the Lord restored his prosperity and doubled his previous possessions.(G) 11 All his brothers, sisters, and former acquaintances(H) came to his house and dined with him in his house. They sympathized with him and comforted him concerning all the adversity the Lord had brought on him. Each one gave him a qesitah[e](I) and a gold earring.(J)

12 So the Lord blessed the last part of Job’s life more than the first. He owned 14,000 sheep, 6,000 camels, 1,000 yoke of oxen, and 1,000 female donkeys. 13 He also had seven sons and three daughters. 14 He named his first daughter Jemimah, his second Keziah, and his third Keren-happuch.(K) 15 No women as beautiful as Job’s daughters could be found in all the land, and their father granted them an inheritance with their brothers.

16 Job lived 140 years after this and saw his children and their children to the fourth generation. 17 Then Job died, old and full of days.(L)

BOOK I
(Psalms 1–41)

Psalm 1

The Two Ways

How happy is the man
who does not follow[f] the advice of the wicked
or take[g] the path of sinners
or join a group[h] of mockers!(M)
Instead, his delight is in the Lord’s instruction,
and he meditates on it day and night.(N)
He is like a tree planted beside streams of water[i]
that bears its fruit in season[j](O)
and whose leaf does not wither.(P)
Whatever he does prospers.(Q)

The wicked are not like this;
instead, they are like chaff that the wind blows away.(R)
Therefore the wicked will not survive[k] the judgment,(S)
and sinners will not be in the community of the righteous.

For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous,(T)
but the way of the wicked leads to ruin.(U)

Psalm 2

Coronation of the Son

Why(V) do the nations rebel[l](W)
and the peoples plot in vain?(X)
The kings of the earth take their stand,(Y)
and the rulers conspire together
against the Lord and His Anointed One:[m](Z)
“Let us tear off their chains
and free ourselves from their restraints.”[n](AA)

The One enthroned[o] in heaven laughs;
the Lord ridicules them.(AB)
Then He speaks to them in His anger
and terrifies them in His wrath:(AC)
“I have consecrated My King[p]
on Zion, My holy mountain.”(AD)

I will declare the Lord’s decree:
He said to Me, “You are My Son;[q]
today I have become Your[r] Father.(AE)
Ask of Me,
and I will make the nations Your[s] inheritance
and the ends of the earth Your[t] possession.(AF)
You will break[u] them with a rod of iron;
You[v] will shatter them like pottery.”[w](AG)

10 So now, kings, be wise;
receive instruction, you judges of the earth.
11 Serve the Lord with reverential awe
and rejoice with trembling.(AH)
12 Pay homage to[x] the Son or He[y] will be angry
and you will perish in your rebellion,[z](AI)
for His[aa] anger may ignite at any moment.(AJ)
All those who take refuge in Him[ab] are happy.(AK)

I wake again because the Lord sustains me.(AS)
I am not afraid of the thousands of people
who have taken their stand against me on every side.(AT)

Salvation belongs to the Lord;(AX)
may Your blessing be on Your people.(AY)Selah

the faithful for Himself;
the Lord will hear when I call to Him.
Be angry[ad] and do not sin;(BE)
on your bed, reflect in your heart and be still.(BF)Selah
Offer sacrifices in righteousness[ae](BG)
and trust in the Lord.(BH)

Many are saying, “Who can show us anything good?”
Look on us with favor, Lord.(BI)

You have put more joy in my heart

I will both lie down and sleep in peace,(BK)
for You alone, Lord, make me live in safety.(BL)

At daybreak,(BP) Lord, You hear my voice;
at daybreak I plead my case to You(BQ) and watch expectantly.

For You are not a God who delights in wickedness;
evil cannot dwell with You.(BR)
The boastful cannot stand in Your presence;(BS)
You hate all evildoers.(BT)
You destroy those who tell lies;(BU)
the Lord abhors a man of bloodshed and treachery.(BV)

by the abundance of Your faithful love;(BW)
I bow down toward Your holy temple
in reverential awe of You.(BX)
Lord, lead me in Your righteousness(BY)
because of my adversaries;[af]
make Your way straight before me.(BZ)

For there is nothing reliable in what they say;[ag](CA)
destruction is within them;
their throat is an open grave;
they flatter with their tongues.(CB)
10 Punish them, God;
let them fall by their own schemes.(CC)
Drive them out(CD) because of their many crimes,
for they rebel against You.(CE)

11 But let all who take refuge in You rejoice;(CF)
let them shout for joy forever.
May You shelter them,(CG)
and may those who love Your name boast about You.(CH)
12 For You, Lord, bless the righteous one;
You surround him with favor like a shield.(CI)

my whole being is shaken with terror.(CO)

A Shiggaion[ak] of David, which he sang to the Lord concerning the words of Cush,[al] a Benjaminite.

Yahweh my God, I seek refuge in You;(DA)

ripping me apart with no one to rescue me.[an](DC)

Yahweh my God, if I have done this,
if there is injustice on my hands,(DD)

When I observe Your heavens,
the work of Your fingers,
the moon and the stars,
which You set in place,(EG)
what is man that You remember him,
the son of man that You look after him?(EH)
You made him little less than God[az][ba]
and crowned him with glory and honor.
You made him lord over the works of Your hands;
You put everything under his feet:[bb](EI)
all the sheep and oxen,
as well as the animals in the wild,
the birds of the sky,
and the fish of the sea
that pass through the currents of the seas.(EJ)

Yahweh, our Lord,
how magnificent is Your name throughout the earth!

Lord,[bh][bi] why do You stand so far away?(FP)

In arrogance the wicked relentlessly pursue the afflicted;
let them be caught in the schemes they have devised.(FR)

For the wicked one boasts about his own cravings;(FS)
the one who is greedy curses[bj] and despises the Lord.(FT)
In all his scheming,
the wicked arrogantly thinks:[bk]
“There is no accountability,
since God does not exist.”(FU)
His ways are always secure;[bl]
Your lofty judgments are beyond his sight;
he scoffs at all his adversaries.(FV)
He says to himself, “I will never be moved—
from generation to generation without calamity.”(FW)
Cursing, deceit, and violence fill his mouth;
trouble and malice are under his tongue.(FX)
He waits in ambush near the villages;(FY)
he kills the innocent in secret places.
His eyes are on the lookout for the helpless;(FZ)
he lurks in secret like a lion in a thicket.

to shoot from the shadows at the upright in heart.(GP)
When the foundations are destroyed,
what can the righteous do?”(GQ)

our lips are our own—who can be our master?”(HA)

and the groaning of the poor,
I will now rise up,” says the Lord.
“I will put the one who longs for it in a safe place.”(HB)

I will sing to the Lord
because He has treated me generously.(HL)

There is no one who does good,
not even one.[by](HO)

Will evildoers never understand?
They consume My people as they consume bread;(HP)

You sinners frustrate the plans of the afflicted,(HS)

I have nothing good besides You.”[cf](IH)
As for the holy people who are in the land,(II)
they are the noble ones.
All my delight is in them.
The sorrows of those who take another god
for themselves will multiply;
I will not pour out their drink offerings of blood,
and I will not speak their names with my lips.(IJ)

their mouths speak arrogantly.(JI)
11 They advance against me;[co] now they surround me.(JJ)

from men of the world
whose portion is in this life:
You fill their bellies with what You have in store;
their sons are satisfied,
and they leave their surplus to their children.(JO)

15 But I will see Your face in righteousness;(JP)
when I awake, I will be satisfied with Your presence.[cr](JQ)

49 Therefore I will praise You, Yahweh, among the nations;
I will sing about Your name.(MG)
50 He gives great victories to His king;(MH)
He shows loyalty to His anointed,
to David and his descendants forever.(MI)

Psalm 19

The Witness of Creation and Scripture

For the choir director. A Davidic psalm.

The heavens declare the glory of God,
and the sky[dc] proclaims the work of His hands.(MJ)
Day after day they pour out speech;
night after night they communicate knowledge.[dd]
There is no speech; there are no words;
their voice is not heard.
Their message[de] has gone out to all the earth,
and their words to the ends of the world.(MK)

In the heavens[df] He has pitched a tent for the sun.(ML)
It is like a groom coming from the[dg] bridal chamber;
it rejoices like an athlete running a course.
It rises from one end of the heavens
and circles[dh] to their other end;(MM)
nothing is hidden from its heat.

The instruction of the Lord is perfect,
renewing one’s life;(MN)
the testimony of the Lord is trustworthy,
making the inexperienced wise.(MO)
The precepts of the Lord are right,
making the heart glad;(MP)
the command of the Lord is radiant,
making the eyes light up.(MQ)
The fear of the Lord is pure,
enduring forever;(MR)
the ordinances of the Lord are reliable
and altogether righteous.(MS)
10 They are more desirable than gold—
than an abundance of pure gold;(MT)
and sweeter than honey,
which comes from the honeycomb.(MU)
11 In addition, Your servant is warned by them;
there is great reward in keeping them.(MV)

12 Who perceives his unintentional sins?
Cleanse me from my hidden faults.(MW)
13 Moreover, keep Your servant from willful sins;(MX)
do not let them rule over me.(MY)
Then I will be innocent
and cleansed from blatant rebellion.(MZ)
14 May the words of my mouth
and the meditation of my heart
be acceptable to You,(NA)
Lord, my rock and my Redeemer.(NB)

Psalm 20

May Yahweh fulfill all your requests.(NK)

Now I know that the Lord gives victory to His anointed;(NL)
He will answer him from His holy heaven
with mighty victories from[di] His right hand.(NM)
Some take pride in chariots, and others in horses,
but we take pride in the name of Yahweh our God.(NN)
They collapse and fall,
but we rise and stand firm.(NO)
Lord, give victory to the king!(NP)
May He[dj] answer us on the day that we call.

The King’s Victory

Lord, the king finds joy in Your strength.

You have given him his heart’s desire(NR)
and have not denied the request of his lips.(NS)Selah
For You meet him with rich blessings;
You place a crown of pure gold on his head.(NT)
He asked You for life, and You gave it to him—
length of days forever and ever.(NU)
His glory is great through Your victory;
You confer majesty and splendor on him.(NV)
You give him blessings forever;(NW)
You cheer him with joy in Your presence.(NX)
For the king relies on the Lord;
through the faithful love of the Most High
he is not shaken.(NY)

Your hand will capture all your enemies;
your right hand will seize those who hate you.(NZ)
You will make them burn
like a fiery furnace when you appear;
the Lord will engulf them in His wrath,
and fire will devour them.(OA)
10 You will wipe their descendants from the earth
and their offspring from the human race.(OB)
11 Though they intend to harm[dk] you
and devise a wicked plan, they will not prevail.(OC)
12 Instead, you will put them to flight
when you aim your bow[dl] at their faces.(OD)

13 Be exalted, Lord, in Your strength;
we will sing and praise Your might.(OE)

Psalm 22

From Suffering to Praise

For the choir director: according to “The Deer of the Dawn.”[dm] A Davidic psalm.

My God, my God, why have You forsaken me?(OF)
Why are You so far from my deliverance(OG)
and from my words of groaning?[dn](OH)
My God, I cry by day, but You do not answer,
by night, yet I have no rest.(OI)
But You are holy,
enthroned on the praises of Israel.(OJ)
Our fathers trusted in You;
they trusted, and You rescued them.(OK)
They cried to You and were set free;
they trusted in You and were not disgraced.(OL)

But I am a worm and not a man,(OM)
scorned by men and despised by people.(ON)
Everyone who sees me mocks me;
they sneer[do] and shake their heads:(OO)
“He relies on[dp] the Lord;
let Him rescue him;
let the Lord[dq] deliver him,
since He takes pleasure in him.”(OP)

You took me from the womb,
making me secure while at my mother’s breast.(OQ)
10 I was given over to You at birth;[dr]
You have been my God from my mother’s womb.(OR)

11 Do not be far from me, because distress is near
and there is no one to help.(OS)

12 Many bulls surround me;
strong ones of Bashan encircle me.(OT)
13 They open their mouths against me—
lions, mauling and roaring.(OU)
14 I am poured out like water,(OV)
and all my bones are disjointed;(OW)
my heart is like wax,
melting within me.(OX)
15 My strength is dried up like baked clay;(OY)
my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth.(OZ)
You put me into the dust of death.(PA)
16 For dogs have surrounded me;(PB)
a gang of evildoers has closed in on me;
they pierced[ds] my hands and my feet.(PC)
17 I can count all my bones;
people[dt] look and stare at me.(PD)
18 They divided my garments among themselves,
and they cast lots for my clothing.(PE)

19 But You, Lord, don’t be far away.(PF)
My strength, come quickly to help me.(PG)
20 Deliver my life from the sword,(PH)
my only life[du] from the power of these dogs.
21 Save me from the mouth of the lion!(PI)
You have rescued[dv] me
from the horns of the wild oxen.

22 I will proclaim Your name to my brothers;
I will praise You in the congregation.(PJ)
23 You who fear Yahweh, praise Him!(PK)
All you descendants of Jacob, honor Him!
All you descendants of Israel, revere Him!(PL)
24 For He has not despised or detested
the torment of the afflicted.(PM)
He did not hide His face from him(PN)
but listened when he cried to Him for help.(PO)

25 I will give praise[dw] in the great congregation
because of You;(PP)
I will fulfill my vows
before those who fear You.[dx](PQ)

All the families of the nations
will bow down before You,(PT)
28 for kingship belongs to the Lord;
He rules over the nations.(PU)
29 All who prosper on earth will eat and bow down;
all those who go down to the dust
will kneel before Him—
even the one who cannot preserve his life.(PV)
30 Their descendants will serve Him;
the next generation will be told about the Lord.(PW)
31 They will come and tell a people yet to be born
about His righteousness—
what He has done.(PX)

for His name’s sake.(QC)
Even when I go through the darkest valley,[ea]
I fear no danger,
for You are with me;(QD)
Your rod and Your staff[eb]—they comfort me.(QE)

You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies;
You anoint my head with oil;(QF)
my cup overflows.(QG)
Only goodness and faithful love will pursue me
all the days of my life,(QH)
and I will dwell in[ec] the house of the Lord
as long as I live.[ed](QI)

The King of Glory

A Davidic psalm.

The earth and everything in it,
the world and its inhabitants,

Who may ascend the mountain of the Lord?
Who may stand in His holy place?(QL)
The one who has clean hands and a pure heart,(QM)
who has not set his mind[ee] on what is false,(QN)
and who has not sworn deceitfully.
He will receive blessing from the Lord,(QO)
and righteousness from the God of his salvation.(QP)

who seek the face of the God of Jacob.[ef](QQ)Selah

Lift up your heads, you gates!
Rise up, ancient doors!
Then the King of glory will come in.(QR)
Who is this King of glory?
The Lord, strong and mighty,
the Lord, mighty in battle.(QS)
Lift up your heads, you gates!
Rise up, ancient doors!
Then the King of glory will come in.
10 Who is He, this King of glory?
The Lord of Hosts,
He is the King of glory.(QT)Selah
