Book of Common Prayer
Tsadhe
137 (A)You are righteous, Lord,
And Your judgments are right.
138 You have commanded Your testimonies in (B)righteousness
And great (C)faithfulness.
139 My (D)zeal has [a]consumed me,
Because my enemies have forgotten Your words.
140 Your (E)word is very [b]pure,
Therefore Your servant (F)loves it.
141 I am small and (G)despised,
Yet I do not (H)forget Your precepts.
142 Your righteousness is an everlasting righteousness,
And (I)Your Law is truth.
143 Trouble and anguish have [c]come upon me,
Yet Your commandments are my (J)delight.
144 Your (K)testimonies are righteous forever;
(L)Give me understanding that I may live.
Qoph
145 I cried out (M)with all my heart; answer me, Lord!
I will (N)comply with Your statutes.
146 I cried to You; (O)save me
And I shall keep Your testimonies.
147 I [d](P)rise before dawn and cry for help;
I [e]wait for Your words.
148 My eyes anticipate the (Q)night watches,
So that I may (R)meditate on Your [f]word.
149 Hear my voice (S)according to Your faithfulness;
(T)Revive me, Lord, according to Your judgments.
150 Those who follow after wickedness approach;
They are far from Your Law.
151 You are (U)near, Lord,
And all Your commandments are (V)truth.
152 From long ago I have (W)known from Your testimonies
That You have founded them (X)forever.
Resh
153 (Y)Look at my (Z)affliction and rescue me,
For I have not (AA)forgotten Your Law.
154 (AB)Plead my cause and (AC)redeem me;
Revive me according to Your [g]word.
155 Salvation is (AD)far from the wicked,
For they (AE)do not seek Your statutes.
156 [h](AF)Great are Your mercies, Lord;
Revive me according to Your judgments.
157 Many are my (AG)persecutors and my enemies,
Yet I do not (AH)turn aside from Your testimonies.
158 I see the (AI)treacherous and (AJ)loathe them,
Because they do not keep Your word.
159 Consider how I (AK)love Your precepts;
(AL)Revive me, Lord, according to Your faithfulness.
160 The (AM)sum of Your word is (AN)truth,
And every one of Your righteous judgments (AO)is everlasting.
Job Says He Longs for God
23 Then Job responded,
2 “Even today my (A)complaint is rebellion;
[a]His hand is (B)heavy despite my groaning.
3 Oh that I knew how to find Him,
That I might come to His home!
4 I would (C)present my case before Him
And fill my mouth with arguments.
5 I would learn the words which He would [b]answer,
And perceive what He would tell me.
6 Would He contend with me by (D)the greatness of His power?
No, surely He would pay attention to me.
7 There the upright would (E)argue with Him;
And I [c]would be (F)free of my Judge forever.
8 “Behold, I go forward but He is not there,
And backward, but I (G)cannot perceive Him;
9 When He acts on the left, I cannot see Him;
He turns to the right, but I cannot see Him.
10 But He knows the [d]way I take;
When He has (H)put me to the test, I will come out as gold.
11 My foot has (I)held on to His path;
I have kept His way and not turned aside.
12 I have not [e]failed the command of His lips;
I have treasured the (J)words of His mouth [f]more than my [g]necessary food.
43 (A)The next day He [a]decided to go to (B)Galilee, and He *found (C)Philip. And Jesus *said to him, “(D)Follow Me.” 44 Now (E)Philip was from (F)Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. 45 (G)Philip *found (H)Nathanael and *said to him, “We have found Him of whom (I)Moses wrote in the Law, and (J)the prophets also wrote: Jesus (K)the son of Joseph, from (L)Nazareth!” 46 Nathanael said to him, “(M)Can anything good be from Nazareth?” (N)Philip *said to him, “Come and see.” 47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming to Him, and *said of him, “Here is truly an (O)Israelite, in whom there is no deceit!” 48 Nathanael *said to Him, “How do You know me?” Jesus answered and said to him, “Before (P)Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” 49 Nathanael answered Him, “(Q)Rabbi, You are (R)the Son of God; You are the (S)King of Israel!” 50 Jesus answered and said to him, “Because I said to you that I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You will see greater things than these.” 51 And He *said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see (T)heaven opened and (U)the angels of God ascending and descending on (V)the Son of Man.”
God’s Omnipresence and Omniscience.
For the music director. A Psalm of David.
139 Lord, You have (A)searched me and known me.
2 You (B)know [a]when I sit down and [b]when I get up;
You (C)understand my thought from far away.
3 You [c](D)scrutinize my [d]path and my lying down,
And are acquainted with all my ways.
4 [e]Even before there is a word on my tongue,
Behold, Lord, You (E)know it all.
5 You have (F)encircled me behind and in front,
And (G)placed Your hand upon me.
6 Such (H)knowledge is (I)too wonderful for me;
It is too high, I cannot comprehend it.
7 (J)Where can I go from Your Spirit?
Or where can I flee from Your presence?
8 (K)If I ascend to heaven, You are there;
If I make my bed in [f]Sheol, behold, (L)You are there.
9 If I take up the wings of the dawn,
If I dwell in the remotest part of the sea,
10 Even there Your hand will (M)lead me,
And Your right hand will take hold of me.
11 If I say, “Surely the (N)darkness will [g]overwhelm me,
And the light around me will be night,”
12 Even (O)darkness is not dark [h]to You,
And the night is as bright as the day.
(P)Darkness and light are alike to You.
13 For You (Q)created my innermost parts;
You (R)wove me in my mother’s womb.
14 I will give thanks to You, because [i]I am awesomely and wonderfully made;
(S)Wonderful are Your works,
And my soul knows it very well.
15 My [j](T)frame was not hidden from You
When I was made in secret,
And skillfully formed in the (U)depths of the earth;
16 Your (V)eyes have seen my formless substance;
And in (W)Your book were written
All the (X)days that were ordained for me,
When as yet there was not one of them.
17 How precious also are Your (Y)thoughts for me, God!
How vast is the sum of them!
18 Were I to count them, they would (Z)outnumber the sand.
When (AA)I awake, I am still with You.
19 If only You would (AB)put the wicked to death, God;
(AC)Leave me, (AD)you men of bloodshed.
20 For they (AE)speak [k]against You wickedly,
And Your enemies [l](AF)take Your name in vain.
21 Do I not (AG)hate those who hate You, Lord?
And do I not (AH)loathe those who rise up against You?
22 I hate them with the utmost hatred;
They have become my enemies.
Greeks Seek Jesus
20 Now there were some (A)Greeks among those who were going up to worship at (B)the feast; 21 these people then came to (C)Philip, who was from (D)Bethsaida of Galilee, and were making a request of him, saying, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” 22 Philip *came and *told (E)Andrew; then Andrew and Philip *came and *told Jesus. 23 But Jesus *answered them by saying, “(F)The hour has come for the Son of Man to (G)be glorified. 24 Truly, truly I say to you, (H)unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. 25 (I)The one who loves his [a]life loses it, and the one who (J)hates his [b]life in this world will keep it [c]to eternal life. 26 If anyone [d]serves Me, he must follow Me; and (K)where I am, there My servant will be also; if anyone [e]serves Me, the Father will (L)honor him.
