Psalm 82

God Commands Justice

A psalm of Asaph.[a]

82 God stands in the divine assembly;[b]
he administers judgment in the midst of the gods.[c]
“How long will you judge unjustly
and show favoritism to the wicked?[d] Selah
Judge on behalf of the helpless and the orphan;
provide justice to the afflicted and the poor.
Rescue the helpless and the needy;
deliver them from the hand of the wicked.”
They do not know or consider.[e]
They go about in the darkness,
so that all the foundations of the earth are shaken.
I have said,[f] “You are gods,
and sons of the Most High, all of you.
However, you will die like men,[g]
and you will fall like one of the princes.”
Rise up, O God, judge the earth,
because you shall inherit[h] all the nations.

Psalm 87

Foreign Nations Come to Worship in Jerusalem

Of the sons of Korah. A psalm. A song.[a]

87 His foundation is on the holy mountains.
Yahweh loves the gates of Zion
more than all the dwellings of Jacob.
Glorious things are spoken about[b] you,
O city of God. Selah
I will record[c] those who know me
in Rahab[d] and Babylon,
behold in Philistia and Tyre with Cush,
“This one was born there.”
But with respect to Zion it shall be said,
Each one[e] was born in her,”
for the Most High himself will establish her.
Yahweh will record in writing the peoples,
“This one was born there.” Selah
And while dancing, singers will sing,
“All my springs are in you.”

Isaiah 52:7-12

How delightful on the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news,
    who announces peace, who brings good news, who announces salvation,
    who says to Zion, “Your God reigns as a king.”
The voices[a] of your watchmen! They lift up their voices;[b]
    together they sing for joy;
        for they clearly[c] see Yahweh’s return to Zion.
Break forth,
    sing for joy together, ruins of Jerusalem,
for Yahweh has comforted his people;
    he has redeemed Jerusalem.
10 Yahweh has bared his holy arm[d] to the eyes of all the nations,
    and all the ends[e] of the earth shall see the salvation of our God.
11 Depart, depart, go out from there! You must not touch any unclean thing.
    Go out from the midst of it, keep clean, you who carry the vessels of Yahweh.
12 For you shall not go out in haste,
    and you shall not go in flight,
for Yahweh is going before you,
    and your rear guard is the God of Israel.

Hebrews 2:5-10

The Son’s Humiliation and Suffering

For he did not subject to angels the world to come, about which we are speaking. But someone testified somewhere, saying,

“What is man, that you remember him,
    or the son of man, that you care for him?
You made him for a short time lower than the angels;
    you crowned him with glory and honor;[a]
    you subjected all things under his feet.[b]

For in subjecting all things,[c] he left nothing that was not subject to him. But now we do not yet see all things subjected to him, but we see Jesus, for a short time made lower than the angels, because of the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, so that apart from God[d] he might taste death on behalf of everyone. 10 For it was fitting for him for whom are all things and through whom are all things in bringing many sons to glory to perfect the originator of their salvation through sufferings.

Psalm 110

Yahweh Gives Authority to His Messiah

Of David. A psalm.[a]

110 A declaration of Yahweh to my lord,
“Sit at my right hand
until I make your enemies your footstool.”
Yahweh will send out your mighty scepter from Zion;
rule in the midst of your enemies.
Your people will volunteer[b] in the day of your power.[c]
In holy splendor, from the womb of the dawn,
you will have the dew of your youth.[d]
Yahweh has sworn and he will not change his mind,
“You are a priest forever
according to the manner of Melchizedek.”
O Lord, at your right hand
he will shatter kings in the day of his anger.
He will judge among the nations;
he will fill them with corpses.
He will shatter the rulers[e] of many countries.
He will drink from the stream by the road;
therefore he will lift up his head.

Psalm 132

Yahweh Dwells in Zion

A song of ascents.[a]

132 O Yahweh, remember with regard to David
all his affliction.[b]
How he swore to Yahweh,
he vowed to the Mighty One of Jacob:
“I will not enter into the tent of my house,
I will not go up to the couch of my bed,
I will give no sleep to my eyes,
no slumber to my eyelids,
until I find a place for Yahweh,
a dwelling place for the Mighty One of Jacob.”
Look, we heard of it in Ephrathah;
we found her in the fields of Jaar.[c]
Let us go to his dwelling places;[d]
Let us worship at his footstool.
Arise, O Yahweh, to your resting place,
you and your mighty ark.
Let your priests clothe themselves with righteousness,
and let your faithful sing for joy.
10 For the sake of your servant David,
do not turn away the face of your anointed one.
11 Yahweh swore in truth to David;
he will not turn back from it.
“One from the fruit of your body[e]
I will set on your throne.
12 If your sons will heed my covenant
and my testimonies that I will teach them,
their sons also forever
will sit on your throne.”
13 For Yahweh has chosen Zion;
he has desired it for his habitation.
14 “This is my resting place forever;
here I will dwell, for I have desired it.
15 I will bless its provisions abundantly;
I will satisfy its poor with bread.
16 I will also clothe its priests with salvation,
and its faithful will shout exuberantly for joy.
17 There I will cause a horn to grow for David;
I will set a lamp for my anointed one.
18 I will clothe his enemies with shame,
but on him his crown will flourish.”[f]

John 1:9-14

The true light, who gives light to every person, was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world came into being through him, and the world did not recognize[a] him. 11 He came to his own things, and his own people did not receive him. 12 But as many as received him—to those who believe in his name—he gave to them authority to become children of God, 13 who were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of a husband, but of God.

14 And the Word became flesh and took up residence among us, and we saw his glory, glory as of the one and only from the Father, full of grace and truth.
