Psalm 80

A Prayer for Restoration

For the choir director: according to “The Lilies.”[a] A testimony of Asaph.(A) A psalm.

Listen, Shepherd of Israel,
who leads Joseph like a flock;(B)
You who sit enthroned on the cherubim,(C)
rise up(D)
before Ephraim,
Benjamin, and Manasseh.[b](E)
Rally Your power and come to save us.(F)
Restore us, God;
look on us with favor,
and we will be saved.(G)

Lord God of Hosts,
how long will You be angry
with Your people’s prayers?(H)
You fed them the bread of tears
and gave them a full measure[c]
of tears to drink.(I)
You make us quarrel with our neighbors;
our enemies make fun of us.(J)
Restore us, God of Hosts;
look on us with favor, and we will be saved.(K)

You uprooted a vine from Egypt;
You drove out the nations and planted it.(L)
You cleared a place for it;
it took root and filled the land.(M)
10 The mountains were covered by its shade,
and the mighty cedars[d] with its branches.(N)
11 It sent out sprouts toward the Sea[e]
and shoots toward the River.[f](O)

12 Why have You broken down its walls
so that all who pass by pick its fruit?(P)
13 The boar from the forest tears it
and creatures of the field feed on it.(Q)
14 Return, God of Hosts.(R)
Look down from heaven and see;
take care of this vine,
15 the root[g] Your right hand has planted,
the shoot[h] that You made strong for Yourself.(S)
16 It was cut down and burned up;[i]
they[j] perish at the rebuke of Your countenance.(T)
17 Let Your hand be with the man at Your right hand,
with the son of man
You have made strong for Yourself.(U)
18 Then we will not turn away from You;
revive us, and we will call on Your name.(V)
19 Restore us, Yahweh, the God of Hosts;(W)
look on us with favor, and we will be saved.(X)

Psalm 77

Psalm 77

Confidence in a Time of Crisis

For the choir director: according to Jeduthun. Of Asaph.(A) A psalm.

I cry aloud to God,
aloud to God, and He will hear me.(B)
I sought the Lord in my day of trouble.
My hands were continually lifted up
all night long;
I refused to be comforted.(C)
I think of God; I groan;
I meditate; my spirit becomes weak.(D)Selah

You have kept me from closing my eyes;
I am troubled and cannot speak.(E)
I consider days of old,
years long past.(F)
At night I remember my music;
I meditate in my heart, and my spirit ponders.(G)

“Will the Lord reject forever
and never again show favor?(H)
Has His faithful love ceased forever?
Is His promise at an end for all generations?(I)
Has God forgotten to be gracious?
Has He in anger withheld His compassion?”(J)Selah

10 So I say, “I am grieved[a]
that the right hand of the Most High has changed.”(K)
11 I will remember the Lord’s works;
yes, I will remember Your ancient wonders.(L)
12 I will reflect on all You have done
and meditate on Your actions.(M)

13 God, Your way is holy.
What god is great like God?(N)
14 You are the God who works wonders;
You revealed Your strength among the peoples.(O)
15 With power You redeemed Your people,
the descendants of Jacob and Joseph.(P)Selah

16 The waters saw You, God.
The waters saw You; they trembled.
Even the depths shook.(Q)
17 The clouds poured down water.
The storm clouds thundered;
Your arrows flashed back and forth.(R)
18 The sound of Your thunder was in the whirlwind;
lightning lit up the world.(S)
The earth shook and quaked.(T)
19 Your way went through the sea
and Your path through the great waters,
but Your footprints were unseen.(U)
20 You led Your people like a flock(V)
by the hand of Moses and Aaron.(W)

Psalm 79

Psalm 79

Faith amid Confusion

A psalm of Asaph.(A)

God, the nations have invaded Your inheritance,
desecrated Your holy temple,
and turned Jerusalem into ruins.(B)
They gave the corpses of Your servants
to the birds of the sky for food,
the flesh of Your godly ones
to the beasts of the earth.(C)
They poured out their blood
like water all around Jerusalem,
and there was no one to bury them.(D)
We have become an object of reproach
to our neighbors,
a source of mockery and ridicule
to those around us.(E)

How long, Yahweh? Will You be angry forever?
Will Your jealousy keep burning like fire?(F)
Pour out Your wrath on the nations
that don’t acknowledge You,
on the kingdoms that don’t call on Your name,(G)
for they have devoured Jacob
and devastated his homeland.(H)
Do not hold past sins[a] against us;
let Your compassion come to us quickly,
for we have become weak.(I)

God of our salvation, help us(J)
for the glory of Your name.
Deliver us and atone for[b] our sins,
because of Your name.(K)
10 Why should the nations ask,
“Where is their God?”(L)
Before our eyes,
let vengeance for the shed blood of Your servants
be known among the nations.(M)
11 Let the groans of the prisoners reach You;
according to Your great power,
preserve those condemned to die.(N)

12 Pay back sevenfold to our neighbors(O)
the reproach they have hurled at You, Lord.(P)
13 Then we, Your people, the sheep of Your pasture,(Q)
will thank You forever;
we will declare Your praise
to generation after generation.(R)

Jeremiah 7:1-15

False Trust in the Temple

This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord: “Stand in the gate of the house of the Lord(A) and there call out this word: Hear the word of the Lord, all you people of Judah who enter through these gates to worship the Lord.

“This is what the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: Correct your ways and your deeds,(B) and I will allow you to live in this place. Do not trust deceitful words, chanting: This is the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord. Instead, if you really change your ways and your actions, if you act justly toward one another,[a](C) if you no longer oppress the foreigner, the fatherless, and the widow(D) and no longer shed innocent blood in this place or follow other gods, bringing harm on yourselves, I will allow you to live in this place, the land I gave to your ancestors(E) long ago and forever. But look, you keep trusting in deceitful words that cannot help.

“Do you steal, murder, commit adultery, swear falsely, burn incense to Baal, and follow other gods that you have not known?(F) 10 Then do you come and stand before Me in this house(G) called by My name and say, ‘We are delivered, so we can continue doing all these detestable acts’? 11 Has this house, which is called by My name, become a den of robbers(H) in your view? Yes, I too have seen it.”(I)

This is the Lord’s declaration.

Shiloh As a Warning

12 “But return to My place that was at Shiloh, where I made My name dwell at first.(J) See what I did to it because of the evil of My people Israel. 13 Now, because you have done all these things”—this is the Lord’s declaration—“and because I have spoken to you time and time again[b] but you wouldn’t listen,(K) and I have called to you, but you wouldn’t answer,(L) 14 what I did to Shiloh I will do to the house that is called by My name(M)—the house in which you trust—the place that I gave you and your ancestors. 15 I will drive you from My presence, just as I drove out all of your brothers, all the descendants of Ephraim.(N)

Romans 4:1-12

Abraham Justified by Faith

What then can we say that Abraham, our physical ancestor,[a](A) has found? If Abraham was justified[b] by works,(B) he has something to brag about—but not before God.[c] For what does the Scripture say?

Abraham believed God,
and it was credited to him for righteousness.(C)[d]

Now to the one who works,(D) pay is not considered as a gift, but as something owed. But to the one who does not work, but believes on Him who declares the ungodly to be righteous,[e](E) his faith is credited for righteousness.

David Celebrating the Same Truth

Likewise, David also speaks of the blessing of the man God credits righteousness to apart from works:

How joyful are those whose lawless acts are forgiven
and whose sins are covered!
How joyful is the man
the Lord will never charge with sin!(F)[f]

Abraham Justified before Circumcision

Is this blessing only for the circumcised,(G) then? Or is it also for the uncircumcised? For we say, Faith was credited to Abraham for righteousness.(H)[g] 10 In what way then was it credited—while he was circumcised, or uncircumcised? Not while he was circumcised, but uncircumcised. 11 And he received the sign of circumcision(I) as a seal of the righteousness that he had by faith[h](J) while still uncircumcised. This was to make him the father(K) of all who believe(L) but are not circumcised, so that righteousness may be credited to them also. 12 And he became the father of the circumcised, who are not only circumcised but who also follow in the footsteps of the faith our father Abraham had while he was still uncircumcised.

John 7:14-36

14 When the festival was already half over, Jesus went up into the temple complex(A) and began to teach. 15 Then the Jews were amazed and said, “How does He know the Scriptures,(B) since He hasn’t been trained?”

16 Jesus answered them, “My teaching isn’t Mine but is from the One who sent Me.(C) 17 If anyone wants to do His will,(D) he will understand whether the teaching is from God or if I am speaking on My own. 18 The one who speaks for himself seeks his own glory.(E) But He who seeks the glory(F) of the One who sent Him is true,(G) and there is no unrighteousness in Him.(H) 19 Didn’t Moses(I) give you the law? Yet none of you keeps the law!(J) Why do you want to kill Me?”

20 “You have a demon!” the crowd responded. “Who wants to kill You?”

21 “I did one work,(K) and you are all amazed,” Jesus answered. 22 “Consider this: Moses has given you circumcision(L)—not that it comes from Moses but from the fathers(M)—and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath.(N) 23 If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath(O) so that the law of Moses(P) won’t be broken, are you angry at Me because I made a man entirely well on the Sabbath? 24 Stop judging(Q) according to outward appearances; rather judge according to righteous judgment.”

The Identity of the Messiah

25 Some of the people of Jerusalem(R) were saying, “Isn’t this the man they want to kill? 26 Yet, look! He’s speaking publicly and they’re saying nothing to Him. Can it be true that the authorities(S) know He is the Messiah?(T) 27 But we know where this man is from.(U) When the Messiah comes, nobody will know where He is from.”

28 As He was teaching in the temple complex,(V) Jesus cried out, “You know Me and you know where I am from. Yet I have not come on My own, but the One who sent Me(W) is true. You don’t know Him;(X) 29 I know Him because I am from Him, and He sent Me.”(Y)

30 Then they tried to seize Him. Yet no one laid a hand on Him because His hour[a] had not yet come. 31 However, many from the crowd believed in Him and said, “When the Messiah comes, He won’t perform more signs than this man has done,(Z) will He?”

32 The Pharisees(AA) heard the crowd muttering these things about Him, so the chief priests(AB) and the Pharisees sent temple police to arrest Him.

33 Then Jesus said, “I am only with you for a short time.(AC) Then I’m going to the One who sent Me.(AD) 34 You will look for Me, but you will not find Me; and where I am, you cannot come.”(AE)

35 Then the Jews(AF) said to one another, “Where does He intend to go so we won’t find Him? He doesn’t intend to go to the Dispersion[b](AG) among the Greeks(AH) and teach the Greeks, does He? 36 What is this remark He made: ‘You will look for Me, and you will not find Me; and where I am, you cannot come’(AI)?”
