Hallelujah!
50 David defeated the Philistine with a sling and a stone. David overpowered the Philistine and killed him without having a sword. 51 David ran and stood over him. He grabbed the Philistine’s sword,(A) pulled it from its sheath, and used it to kill him. Then he cut off his head. When the Philistines saw that their hero was dead, they fled.(B) 52 The men of Israel and Judah rallied, shouting their battle cry, and chased the Philistines to the entrance of the valley and to the gates of Ekron.[a](C) Philistine bodies were strewn all along the Shaaraim road(D) to Gath and Ekron.
53 When the Israelites returned from the pursuit of the Philistines, they plundered their camps. 54 David took Goliath’s[b] head and brought it to Jerusalem, but he put Goliath’s weapons in his own tent.
55 [c] When Saul had seen David going out to confront the Philistine, he asked Abner the commander of the army, “Whose son is this youth, Abner?” (E)
“Your Majesty, as surely as you live, I don’t know,” Abner replied.
56 The king said, “Find out whose son this young man is!”
57 When David returned from killing the Philistine, Abner took him and brought him before Saul with the Philistine’s head still in his hand.(F) 58 Saul said to him, “Whose son are you, young man?”
“The son of your servant Jesse of Bethlehem,”(G) David answered.
David’s Success
18 When David had finished speaking with Saul, Jonathan was bound to David in close friendship,[d] and loved him as much as he loved himself.(H) 2 Saul kept David with him from that day on and did not let him return to his father’s house.
3 Jonathan made a covenant with David(I) because he loved him as much as himself. 4 Then Jonathan removed the robe he was wearing and gave it to David,(J) along with his military tunic, his sword, his bow, and his belt.
4 For Christ is the end[a] of the law for righteousness(A) to everyone who believes,(B) 5 since Moses writes about the righteousness that is from the law: The one who does these things will live by them.[b](C) 6 But the righteousness that comes from faith(D) speaks like this: Do not say in your heart, “Who will go up to heaven?”[c](E) that is, to bring Christ down 7 or, “Who will go down into the abyss?”[d](F) that is, to bring Christ up from the dead.(G) 8 On the contrary, what does it say? The message is near you, in your mouth and in your heart.[e](H) This is the message of faith that we proclaim: 9 If you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,”(I) and believe in your heart(J) that God raised him from the dead,(K) you will be saved. 10 One believes with the heart, resulting in righteousness, and one confesses with the mouth, resulting in salvation. 11 For the Scripture says, Everyone who believes on him will not be put to shame,[f](L) 12 since there is no distinction between Jew and Greek,(M) because the same Lord(N) of all(O) richly blesses all who call on him. 13 For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.[g](P)
Israel’s Rejection of the Message
14 How, then, can they call on him they have not believed in? And how can they believe without hearing about him?(Q) And how can they hear without a preacher?(R) 15 And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: How beautiful[h] are the feet of those who bring good news.[i](S) 16 But not all obeyed the gospel.(T) For Isaiah says, Lord, who has believed our message?[j](U) 17 So faith comes from what is heard,(V) and what is heard comes through the message about Christ.[k](W)
29 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You build the tombs of the prophets and decorate the graves of the righteous, 30 and you say, ‘If we had lived in the days of our ancestors, we wouldn’t have taken part with them in shedding the prophets’ blood.’ 31 So you testify against yourselves that you are descendants of those who murdered the prophets. 32 Fill up, then, the measure of your ancestors’ sins!(A)
33 “Snakes! Brood of vipers! How can you escape being condemned to hell?[a](B) 34 This is why I am sending you prophets,(C) sages, and scribes. Some of them you will kill and crucify, and some of them you will flog in your synagogues(D) and pursue from town to town. 35 So all the righteous blood shed on the earth will be charged to you,[b] from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah,(E) son of Berechiah, whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar.(F) 36 Truly I tell you, all these things will come on this generation.(G)
Jesus’s Lamenting over Jerusalem
37 “Jerusalem, Jerusalem,(H) who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her. How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks[c] under her wings, but you were not willing!(I) 38 See, your house is left to you desolate.(J) 39 For I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord’!”[d](K)
