Book of Common Prayer
Psalm 113[a]
113 Praise the Lord.
Praise, you servants of the Lord,
praise the name of the Lord.
2 May the Lord’s name be praised
now and forevermore.
3 From east to west[b]
the Lord’s name is deserving of praise.
4 The Lord is exalted over all the nations;
his splendor reaches beyond the sky.[c]
5 Who can compare to the Lord our God,
who sits on a high throne?[d]
6 He bends down to look[e]
at the sky and the earth.
7 He raises the poor from the dirt,
and lifts up the needy from the garbage pile,[f]
8 that he might seat him with princes,
with the princes of his people.
9 He makes the barren woman of the family[g]
a happy mother of children.[h]
Praise the Lord.
Psalm 122[a]
A song of ascents;[b] by David.
122 I was glad because[c] they said to me,
“We will go to the Lord’s temple.”
2 Our feet are[d] standing
inside your gates, O Jerusalem.
3 Jerusalem is a city designed
to accommodate an assembly.[e]
4 The tribes go up[f] there,[g]
the tribes of the Lord,
where it is required that Israel
give thanks to the name of the Lord.[h]
5 Indeed,[i] the leaders sit[j] there on thrones and make legal decisions,
on the thrones of the house of David.[k]
6 Pray[l] for the peace of Jerusalem.
May those who love her prosper.[m]
7 May there be peace inside your defenses,
and prosperity[n] inside your fortresses.[o]
8 For the sake of my brothers and my neighbors
I will say, “May there be peace in you.”
9 For the sake of the temple of the Lord our God
I will pray for you to prosper.[p]
20 Then Hannah became pregnant.
Hannah Dedicates Samuel to the Lord
In the course of time she gave birth to a son.[a] And she named him Samuel, thinking, “I asked the Lord for him.”[b] 21 Then the man Elkanah and all his family went up to make the yearly sacrifice[c] to the Lord and to keep his vow.[d] 22 But Hannah did not go up with them,[e] because she had told[f] her husband, “Not[g] until the boy is weaned. Then I will bring him so that he may appear before the Lord. And he will remain there from then on.”[h]
23 Then her husband Elkanah said to her, “Do what you think best.[i] Stay until you have weaned him. Only may the Lord fulfill his promise.”[j]
So the woman stayed and nursed her son until she had weaned him. 24 Then she took him up with her[k] as soon as she had weaned him, along with three bulls,[l] an ephah[m] of flour, and a container[n] of wine. She came to the Lord’s house at Shiloh, and the boy was with them.[o] 25 They slaughtered the bull, then brought the boy to Eli.[p] 26 She said, “My lord. Just as surely as you are alive, my lord, I am the woman who previously stood here with you in order to pray to the Lord. 27 For this boy I prayed, and the Lord has given me the request that I asked of him. 28 So I also dedicate[q] him to the Lord. For all the days of his life[r] he is dedicated to the Lord.” Then he[s] bowed down there in worship[t] to the Lord.
14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are[a] the sons of God. 15 For you did not receive the spirit of slavery leading again to fear,[b] but you received the Spirit of adoption,[c] by whom[d] we cry, “Abba,[e] Father.” 16 The Spirit himself bears witness to[f] our spirit that we are God’s children. 17 And if children, then heirs (namely, heirs of God and also fellow heirs with Christ)[g]—if indeed we suffer with him so we may also be glorified with him.
18 For I consider that our present sufferings cannot even be compared[h] to the coming glory that will be revealed to us. 19 For the creation eagerly waits for the revelation of the sons of God. 20 For the creation was subjected to futility—not willingly but because of God[i] who subjected it—in hope 21 that the creation itself will also be set free from the bondage of decay into the glorious freedom of God’s children.
