  2. The prophet Isaiah was speaking about John when he said, “He is a voice shouting in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord’s coming! Clear the road for him!’”

  18. And from the time John the Baptist began preaching until now, the Kingdom of Heaven has been forcefully advancing, and violent people are attacking it.
  19. For before John came, all the prophets and the law of Moses looked forward to this present time.
  20. For John didn’t spend his time eating and drinking, and you say, ‘He’s possessed by a demon.’

    When Herod Antipas, the ruler of Galilee, heard about Jesus,
  22. he said to his advisers, “This must be John the Baptist raised from the dead! That is why he can do such miracles.”
  23. For Herod had arrested and imprisoned John as a favor to his wife Herodias (the former wife of Herod’s brother Philip).
  24. John had been telling Herod, “It is against God’s law for you to marry her.”
  25. Herod wanted to kill John, but he was afraid of a riot, because all the people believed John was a prophet.
