  1. so you are to go, and on a day of fasting in the hearing of all the people in the Lord's house you shall read the words of the Lord from the scroll that you have written at my dictation. You shall read them also in the hearing of all the men of Judah who come out of their cities.
  2. In the fifth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, in the ninth month, all the people in Jerusalem and all the people who came from the cities of Judah to Jerusalem proclaimed a fast before the Lord.

  6. Then they came near and said before the king, concerning the injunction, “O king! Did you not sign an injunction, that anyone who makes petition to any god or man within thirty days except to you, O king, shall be cast into the den of lions?” The king answered and said, “The thing stands fast, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which cannot be revoked.”
  7. Then the king went to his palace and spent the night fasting; no diversions were brought to him, and sleep fled from him.
  8. Then I turned my face to the Lord God, seeking him by prayer and pleas for mercy with fasting and sackcloth and ashes.
  9. “So you, by the help of your God, return, hold fast to love and justice, and wait continually for your God.”
  10. Consecrate a fast; call a solemn assembly. Gather the elders and all the inhabitants of the land to the house of the Lord your God, and cry out to the Lord.

    “Yet even now,” declares the Lord, “return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning;
  12. Blow the trumpet in Zion; consecrate a fast; call a solemn assembly;

  15. The great day of the Lord is near, near and hastening fast; the sound of the day of the Lord is bitter; the mighty man cries aloud there.
  16. “Say to all the people of the land and the priests, ‘When you fasted and mourned in the fifth month and in the seventh, for these seventy years, was it for me that you fasted?
  17. “Thus says the Lord of hosts: The fast of the fourth month and the fast of the fifth and the fast of the seventh and the fast of the tenth shall be to the house of Judah seasons of joy and gladness and cheerful feasts. Therefore love truth and peace.
  18. And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.
  19. Fasting

    “And when you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.
  20. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face,
  21. that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

    Then the disciples of John came to him, saying, “Why do we and the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?”
  23. And Jesus said to them, “Can the wedding guests mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast.
