  4. Then the mariners were afraid, and each cried out to his god. And they hurled the cargo that was in the ship into the sea to lighten it for them. But Jonah had gone down into the inner part of the ship and had lain down and was fast asleep.
  5. Jonah Is Thrown into the Sea

    And they said to one another, “Come, let us cast lots, that we may know on whose account this evil has come upon us.” So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah.
  6. So they picked up Jonah and hurled him into the sea, and the sea ceased from its raging.
  7. A Great Fish Swallows Jonah

    And the Lord appointed a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
  8. Jonah's Prayer

    Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the belly of the fish,
  9. And the Lord spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah out upon the dry land.
  10. Jonah Goes to Nineveh

    Then the word of the Lord came to Jonah the second time, saying,
  11. So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, three days' journey in breadth.
  12. Jonah began to go into the city, going a day's journey. And he called out, “Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!”
  13. Jonah's Anger and the Lord's Compassion

    But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was angry.
  14. Jonah went out of the city and sat to the east of the city and made a booth for himself there. He sat under it in the shade, till he should see what would become of the city.
  15. Now the Lord God appointed a plant and made it come up over Jonah, that it might be a shade over his head, to save him from his discomfort. So Jonah was exceedingly glad because of the plant.
  16. When the sun rose, God appointed a scorching east wind, and the sun beat down on the head of Jonah so that he was faint. And he asked that he might die and said, “It is better for me to die than to live.”
  17. But God said to Jonah, “Do you do well to be angry for the plant?” And he said, “Yes, I do well to be angry, angry enough to die.”
  18. The Sign of Jonah

    Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered him, saying, “Teacher, we wish to see a sign from you.”
  19. But he answered them, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.
  20. For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
  21. The men of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, something greater than Jonah is here.
  22. An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.” So he left them and departed.
  23. And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.
  24. The Sign of Jonah

    When the crowds were increasing, he began to say, “This generation is an evil generation. It seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.
  25. For as Jonah became a sign to the people of Nineveh, so will the Son of Man be to this generation.
