³³ And the king sang a lament over Abner and said:

¹⁹ And I will say to my soul, ^(A)“Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; ^(B)eat, drink, and be merry.” ’ ²⁰ But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night ^(C)your soul will be required of you; ^(D)then whose will those things be which you have provided?’

²⁵ Jeremiah also ^(A)lamented for ^(B)Josiah. And to this day ^(C)all the singing men and the singing women speak of Josiah in their lamentations. ^(D)They made it a custom in Israel; and indeed they are written in the Laments.

¹² But she answered him, “No, my brother, do not ^[a]force me, for ^(A)no such thing should be done in Israel. Do not do this ^(B)disgraceful thing! ¹³ And I, where could I take my shame? And as for you, you would be like one of the fools in Israel. Now therefore, please speak to the king; ^(C)for he will not withhold me from you.”

¹⁷ Then David lamented with this lamentation over Saul and over Jonathan his son,

²⁸ Now Absalom had commanded his servants, saying, “Watch now, when Amnon’s ^(A)heart is merry with wine, and when I say to you, ‘Strike Amnon!’ then kill him. Do not be afraid. Have I not commanded you? Be courageous and ^[a]valiant.” ²⁹ So the servants of Absalom ^(B)did to Amnon as Absalom had commanded. Then all the king’s sons arose, and each one got on ^(C)his mule and fled.
