The NIV 365 Day Devotional
Holy Thoughts
Spending time in meditation enables us to become better acquainted with God in the same way that we become acquainted with someone we would really like to know; that is, by spending time with him. Meditation can be difficult in the beginning. We are used to being active and may feel uncomfortable with sitting still and calming our busy thoughts. We may feel we are wasting time, instead of doing something more productive. Actually, for us, nothing could be more productive.
In the act of meditating, we recall, ponder and apply our knowledge of God’s ways, purposes and promises. It is an activity of holy thought, consciously per formed in the presence of God, under the eye of God and by the help of God, as a two-way communion with him. Its purpose is to clear our mental and spiritual vision and let his truth make its full and proper impact on our minds and hearts. Meditation humbles us as we contemplate God’s greatness and glory and allow his Spirit to encourage, reassure and comfort us.
Any difficulties we have in allowing God to come into our lives will be minimized as we acknowledge his presence throughout each day.
Prayer:
God, I’d really like to get to know you better. Help me to spend some time with you every day.
