A Contrite Sinner’s Prayer for Pardon.

For the music director. A Psalm of David, when ^[a]Nathan the prophet came to him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba.

51 ^(A)Be gracious to me, God, according to Your faithfulness;
According to the greatness of ^(B)Your compassion, ^(C)wipe out my wrongdoings.
²^(D)Wash me thoroughly from my guilt
And ^(E)cleanse me from my sin.
³For I ^(F)know my wrongdoings,
And my sin is constantly before me.
⁴^(G)Against You, You only, I have sinned
And done what is ^(H)evil in Your sight,
So that ^(I)You ^[b]are justified ^[c]when You speak
And ^[d]blameless when You judge.

⁵Behold, I was ^(J)brought forth in guilt,
And in sin my mother conceived me.
⁶Behold, You desire ^(K)truth in the ^[e]innermost being,
And in secret You will ^(L)make wisdom known to me.
⁷^[f]Purify me ^(M)with hyssop, and I will be clean;
^[g]Cleanse me, and I will be ^(N)whiter than snow.
⁸^[h]Let me hear ^(O)joy and gladness,
Let the ^(P)bones You have broken rejoice.
⁹^(Q)Hide Your face from my sins
And wipe out all my guilty deeds.

¹⁰^(R)Create ^[i]in me a ^(S)clean heart, God,
And renew a ^(T)steadfast spirit within me.
¹¹^(U)Do not cast me away from Your presence,
And do not take Your ^(V)Holy Spirit from me.
¹²Restore to me the ^(W)joy of Your salvation,
And sustain me with a ^(X)willing spirit.
¹³Then I will ^(Y)teach wrongdoers Your ways,
And sinners will ^[j]be ^(Z)converted to You.

¹⁴Save me from ^(AA)the guilt of bloodshed, God, ^(AB)the God of my salvation;
Then my ^(AC)tongue will joyfully sing of Your righteousness.
¹⁵Lord, ^[k]^(AD)open my lips,
So that my mouth may ^(AE)declare Your praise.
¹⁶For You ^(AF)do not delight in sacrifice, otherwise I would give it;
You do not take pleasure in burnt offering.
¹⁷The sacrifices of God are a ^(AG)broken spirit;
A broken and a contrite heart, God, You will not despise.

¹⁸^(AH)By Your favor do good to Zion;
^[l]^(AI)Build the walls of Jerusalem.
¹⁹Then You will delight in ^[m]^(AJ)righteous sacrifices,
In ^(AK)burnt offering and whole burnt offering;
Then ^[n]bulls will be offered on Your altar.

Futility of Boastful Wickedness.

For the music director. A ^[o]Maskil of David, ^[p]when Doeg the Edomite came and told Saul and said to him, “David has come to the house of Ahimelech.”

52 Why do you ^(AL)boast in evil, you mighty man?
The ^(AM)faithfulness of God endures all day long.
²Your tongue devises ^(AN)destruction,
Like a ^(AO)sharp razor, ^(AP)you worker of deceit.
³You ^(AQ)love evil more than good,
^(AR)Lies more than speaking what is right. Selah
⁴You love all words that devour,
You ^(AS)deceitful tongue.

⁵^[q]But God will break you down forever;
He will snatch you up and ^(AT)tear you away from your tent,
And ^(AU)uproot you from the ^(AV)land of the living. Selah
⁶The righteous will ^(AW)see and fear,
And they will ^(AX)laugh at him, saying,
⁷“Behold, the man who would not make God his refuge,
But ^(AY)trusted in the abundance of his riches
And ^(AZ)was strong in ^[r]his evil desire.”

⁸But as for me, I am like a ^(BA)green olive tree in the house of God;
I ^(BB)trust in the faithfulness of God forever and ever.
⁹I will ^(BC)praise You forever, because You have done it,
And I will wait on Your name, ^(BD)for it is good, in the presence of Your godly ones.

Foolishness and Wickedness of People.

53 ^(BE)The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.”
They are corrupt, and have committed abominable injustice;
^(BF)There is no one who does good.
²God has looked down from heaven upon the sons of mankind
To see if there is ^(BG)anyone who ^[u]understands,
Who ^(BH)seeks after God.
³^(BI)Every one of them has turned aside; together they have become corrupt;
There is no one who does good, not even one.

⁴Have the workers of injustice ^(BJ)no knowledge,
Who eat up My people like they ate bread,
And have not called upon God?
⁵They were in great ^[v]fear there, ^(BK)where no ^[w]fear had been;
For God ^(BL)scattered the bones of ^[x]him who encamped against you;
You ^(BM)put them to shame, because ^(BN)God had rejected them.
⁶Oh, that ^(BO)the salvation of Israel would come from Zion!
When God restores the fortunes of His people,
Jacob shall rejoice, Israel shall be glad.

Prayer for Defense against Enemies.

For the music director; on stringed instruments. A ^[y]Maskil of David, ^[z]when the Ziphites came and said to Saul, “Is David not keeping himself hidden among us?”

54 Save me, God, by ^(BP)Your name,
And ^[aa]vindicate me by ^(BQ)Your power.
²^(BR)Hear my prayer, God;
^(BS)Listen to the words of my mouth.
³For strangers have ^(BT)risen against me
And ^(BU)violent men have ^(BV)sought my ^[ab]life;
They have ^(BW)not set God before them. Selah

⁴Behold, ^(BX)God is my helper;
The Lord is ^[ac]the ^(BY)sustainer of my soul.
⁵^[ad]He will ^(BZ)pay back the evil to my enemies;
^[ae]^(CA)Destroy them ^(CB)in Your ^[af]faithfulness.

⁶^[ag]^(CC)Willingly I will sacrifice to You;
I will ^(CD)praise Your name, Lord, for it is good.
⁷For ^[ah]He has ^(CE)saved me from all ^[ai]trouble,
And my eye has ^(CF)looked with satisfaction upon my enemies.

Prayer for the Destruction of the Treacherous.

55 ^(CG)Listen to my prayer, God;
And ^(CH)do not hide Yourself from my pleading.
²Give Your ^(CI)attention to me and answer me;
I am restless in my ^(CJ)complaint and ^[ak]^(CK)severely distracted,
³Because of the voice of the enemy,
Because of the ^(CL)pressure of the wicked;
For they ^(CM)bring down ^[al]trouble upon me
And in anger they ^(CN)hold a grudge against me.

⁴My ^(CO)heart is in anguish within me,
And the terrors of ^(CP)death have fallen upon me.
⁵Fear and ^(CQ)trembling come upon me,
And ^[am]^(CR)horror has ^[an]overwhelmed me.
⁶I said, “Oh, that I had wings like a dove!
I would fly away and ^[ao]^(CS)be at rest.
⁷Behold, I would flee far away,
I would ^(CT)spend my nights in the wilderness. Selah
⁸I would hurry to my place of refuge
From the ^(CU)stormy wind and heavy gale.”

⁹Confuse them, Lord, ^(CV)divide their tongues,
For I have seen ^(CW)violence and strife in the city.
¹⁰Day and night they go around her upon her walls,
And evil and harm are in her midst.
¹¹^(CX)Destruction is in her midst;
^(CY)Oppression and deceit do not depart from her ^[ap]streets.

¹²For it is ^(CZ)not an enemy who taunts me,
Then I could endure it;
Nor is it one who hates me who ^(DA)has exalted himself against me,
Then I could hide myself from him.
¹³But it is you, a man ^[aq]my equal,
My ^(DB)companion and my ^(DC)confidant;
¹⁴We who had sweet ^[ar]fellowship together,
^(DD)Walked in the house of God among the commotion.
¹⁵May ^[as]death come ^(DE)deceitfully upon them;
May they ^(DF)go down alive to ^[at]Sheol,
For evil is in their dwelling, in their midst.

¹⁶As for me, I shall ^(DG)call upon God,
And the Lord will save me.
¹⁷^(DH)Evening and ^(DI)morning and at ^(DJ)noon, I will complain and moan,
And He will hear my voice.
¹⁸He will ^(DK)redeem my soul in peace ^[au]from the battle which is against me,
For they are ^(DL)many who are aggressive toward me.
¹⁹God will ^(DM)hear and humiliate them—
Even the one ^(DN)who ^[av]sits enthroned from ancient times— Selah
With whom there ^[aw]is no change,
And who ^(DO)do not fear God.
²⁰He has put forth his hands against ^(DP)those who were at peace with him;
He has ^[ax]^(DQ)violated his covenant.
²¹His ^[ay]speech was ^(DR)smoother than butter,
But his heart was war;
His words were ^(DS)softer than oil,
Yet they were drawn ^(DT)swords.

²²^(DU)Cast your burden upon the Lord and He will sustain you;
^(DV)He will never allow the righteous to ^[az]^(DW)be shaken.
²³But You, God, will bring them down to the ^(DX)pit of destruction;
^(DY)Men of bloodshed and deceit will ^(DZ)not live out half their days.
But I will ^(EA)trust in You.

Pleading for Help and Grateful Trust in God.

56 Be gracious to me, God, for a man has ^[bd]^(EB)trampled upon me;
^[be]Fighting all day long he ^(EC)oppresses me.
²My enemies have ^(ED)trampled upon me all day long,
For ^[bf]they are many who ^(EE)fight proudly against me.
³^[bg]When I am ^(EF)afraid,
^[bh]I will ^(EG)put my trust in You.
⁴^(EH)In God, whose word I praise,
In God I have put my trust;
I shall not be afraid.
^(EI)What can mere ^[bi]mortals do to me?
⁵All day long they ^(EJ)distort my words;
All their ^[bj]^(EK)thoughts are against me for evil.
⁶They ^[bk]^(EL)attack, they lurk,
They ^(EM)watch my ^[bl]steps,
As they have ^(EN)waited to take my ^[bm]life.
⁷Because of their wickedness, will there be an ^(EO)escape for them?
In anger ^(EP)make the peoples fall down, God!

⁸You ^(EQ)have taken account of my ^[bn]miseries;
Put my ^(ER)tears in Your bottle.
Are they not in ^(ES)Your book?
⁹Then my enemies will ^(ET)turn back ^(EU)on the day when I call;
This I know, ^[bo]that ^(EV)God is for me.
¹⁰In God, whose word I praise,
In the Lord, whose word I praise,
¹¹In God I have put my ^[bp]trust, I shall not be afraid.
What can mankind do to me?
¹²Your ^(EW)vows are binding upon me, God;
I will render thanksgiving offerings to You.
¹³For You have ^(EX)saved my soul from death,
^[bq]Indeed ^(EY)my feet from stumbling,
So that I may ^(EZ)walk before God
In the ^(FA)light of the ^[br]living.

Prayer for Rescue from Persecutors.

57 Be gracious to me, God, be gracious to me,
For my soul ^(FB)takes refuge in You;
And in the ^(FC)shadow of Your wings I will take refuge
Until destruction ^(FD)passes by.
²I will cry to God Most High,
To God who ^(FE)accomplishes all things for me.
³He will ^(FF)send from heaven and save me;
He rebukes the one who ^[bv]^(FG)tramples upon me. Selah
God will send His ^[bw]^(FH)favor and His truth.

⁴My soul is among ^(FI)lions;
I must lie among those who devour,
Among sons of mankind whose ^(FJ)teeth are spears and arrows,
And their ^(FK)tongue is a sharp sword.
⁵^(FL)Be exalted above the heavens, God;
May Your glory be above all the earth.
⁶They have prepared a ^(FM)net for my steps;
My soul is ^(FN)bowed down;
They ^(FO)dug a pit before me;

⁷^(FQ)My ^(FR)heart is steadfast, God, my heart is steadfast;
I will sing, yes, I will sing praises!

I will awaken the dawn.

Prayer for the Punishment of the Wicked.

58 Do you indeed ^[cb]speak righteousness, you ^[cc]gods?
Do you ^(FX)judge ^[cd]fairly, you sons of mankind?
²No, in heart you ^(FY)practice injustice;
On earth you ^(FZ)clear a way for the violence of your hands.
³The wicked have turned away ^(GA)from the womb;
These who speak lies ^(GB)go astray from ^[ce]birth.
⁴They have venom like the ^(GC)venom of a serpent;
Like a deaf cobra that stops up its ear,
⁵So that it ^(GD)does not hear the voice of ^[cf]^(GE)charmers,
Or a skillful caster of spells.

⁶God, ^(GF)shatter their teeth in their mouth;
Break out the fangs of the young lions, Lord.
⁷May they ^(GG)flow away like water that runs off;
When he ^[cg]^(GH)aims his arrows, may they be as ^[ch]headless shafts.
⁸May they be like a snail which goes along in slime,
Like the ^(GI)miscarriage of a woman that never sees the sun.
⁹Before your ^(GJ)pots can feel the fire of thorns
He will ^(GK)sweep them away with a whirlwind, the ^[ci]green and the burning alike.

¹⁰The ^(GL)righteous will rejoice when he ^(GM)sees vengeance;
He will ^(GN)wash his feet in the blood of the wicked.
¹¹And people will say, “There certainly is ^[cj]^(GO)a reward for the righteous;
There certainly is a God who ^(GP)judges on the earth!”

Prayer for Rescue from Enemies.

59 ^(GQ)Rescue me from my enemies, my God;
^[cn]^(GR)Set me securely on high away from those who rise up against me.
²Rescue me from ^(GS)those who practice injustice,
And save me from ^(GT)men of bloodshed.
³For behold, they ^(GU)have ^[co]set an ambush for my ^[cp]life;
^[cq]Fierce men ^(GV)attack me,
^(GW)Not for my wrongdoing nor for my sin, Lord,
⁴^[cr]^(GX)For no guilt of mine, they run and take their stand against me.
^(GY)Stir Yourself to ^[cs]help me, and see!
⁵You, ^(GZ)Lord God of armies, the God of Israel,
Awake to ^[ct]^(HA)punish all the nations;
^(HB)Do not be gracious to any who deal treacherously in wrongdoing. Selah
⁶They ^(HC)return at evening, they howl like a ^(HD)dog,
And prowl around the city.
⁷Behold, they ^(HE)gush forth with their mouths;
^(HF)Swords are in their lips,
For, they say, “^(HG)Who hears?”

You ^(HI)scoff at all the nations.

For God is my ^(HK)refuge.

God will let me ^(HM)look triumphantly upon my enemies.

So that people may ^(HU)know that God ^[da]rules in Jacob,

And ^[dc]murmur if they are not satisfied.

¹⁶But as for me, I will ^(HX)sing of Your strength;
Yes, I will ^(HY)joyfully sing of Your faithfulness in the ^(HZ)morning,
For You have been my ^(IA)refuge
And a ^(IB)place of refuge on the day of my distress.

Grieving over Defeat in Battle, and Prayer for Help.

60 God, ^(IE)You have rejected us. You have ^[dh]^(IF)broken us;
You have been ^(IG)angry; ^(IH)restore us!
²You have made the ^[di]^(II)land quake, You have split it open;
^(IJ)Heal its cracks, for it sways.
³You have ^[dj]^(IK)made Your people experience hardship;
You have given us ^[dk]wine to ^(IL)drink that makes us stagger.
⁴You have given a ^(IM)banner to those who fear You,
That it may be displayed because of the truth. Selah
⁵^(IN)That Your ^(IO)beloved may be rescued,
^(IP)Save us with Your right hand, and answer ^[dl]us!

⁶God has spoken in His ^[dm]^(IQ)holiness:
“I will triumph, I will divide up ^(IR)Shechem, and measure out the Valley of ^(IS)Succoth.
⁷^(IT)Gilead is Mine, and Manasseh is Mine;
^(IU)Ephraim also is the ^[dn]helmet of My head;
Judah is My ^(IV)scepter.
⁸^(IW)Moab is My washbowl;
I will throw My sandal over ^(IX)Edom;
Shout loud, ^(IY)Philistia, because of Me!”

⁹Who will bring me into the besieged city?
Who ^[do]will lead me to Edom?
¹⁰Have You Yourself not ^(IZ)rejected us, God?
And ^(JA)will You not go out with our armies, God?
¹¹Oh give us help against the enemy,
For ^(JB)rescue ^[dp]by man is worthless.
¹²^[dq]Through God we will ^(JC)do valiantly,
And it is He who will ^(JD)trample down our enemies.

Confidence in God’s Protection.

61 ^(JE)Hear my cry, God;
^(JF)Give Your attention to my prayer.
²From the ^(JG)end of the earth I call to You when my heart is ^(JH)faint;
Lead me to ^(JI)the rock that is higher than I.
³For You have been a ^(JJ)refuge for me,
A ^(JK)tower of strength against the enemy.
⁴Let me ^[dr]^(JL)dwell in Your tent forever;
Let me ^(JM)take refuge in the shelter of Your wings. Selah

⁵For You have heard my ^(JN)vows, God;
You have given me the inheritance of those who ^(JO)fear Your name.
⁶You will ^[ds]^(JP)prolong the king’s ^[dt]life;
His years will be like generations.
⁷He will ^[du]sit enthroned ^(JQ)before God forever;
Appoint ^(JR)faithfulness and truth that they may watch over him.
⁸So I will ^(JS)sing praise to Your name forever,
That I may ^(JT)pay my vows day by day.

God Alone a Refuge from Treachery and Oppression.

62 ^(JU)My soul waits in silence for God alone;
From Him ^(JV)comes my salvation.
²He alone is my ^(JW)rock and my salvation,
My ^(JX)stronghold; I will not be greatly shaken.

³How long will you attack a man,
That you may murder him, all of you,
Like a ^(JY)leaning wall, like a tottering fence?
⁴They have planned only to thrust him down from his high position;
They ^(JZ)delight in falsehood;
They ^(KA)bless with ^[dw]their mouth,
But inwardly they curse. Selah

⁵My soul, ^(KB)wait in silence for God alone,
For my hope is from Him.
⁶He alone is ^(KC)my rock and my salvation,
My refuge; I will not be shaken.
⁷My ^(KD)salvation and my glory rest on God;
The rock of my strength, my ^(KE)refuge is in God.
⁸^(KF)Trust in Him at all times, you people;
^(KG)Pour out your hearts before Him;
God is a refuge for us. Selah

⁹People of ^(KH)low standing are only ^(KI)breath, and people of rank are a ^(KJ)lie;
In the ^(KK)balances they go up.
Together they are lighter than breath.
¹⁰^(KL)Do not trust in oppression,
And do not vainly rely on ^(KM)robbery;
If wealth increases, ^(KN)do not set your heart on it.

¹¹God has ^(KO)spoken ^[dx]once;
^[dy]Twice I have heard this:
That ^(KP)power belongs to God;
¹²And faithfulness ^(KQ)is Yours, Lord,
For You ^(KR)reward a person according to his work.

The Thirsting Soul Satisfied in God.

63 God, ^(KS)You are my God; I shall be watching for You;
My soul ^(KT)thirsts for You, my flesh yearns for You,
In a ^(KU)dry and exhausted land where there is no water.
²So have I ^(KV)seen You in the sanctuary,
To see Your power and glory.
³Because Your ^[ea]^(KW)favor is better than life,
My lips will praise You.
⁴So I will bless You ^(KX)as long as I live;
I will ^(KY)lift up my hands in Your name.
⁵My soul is ^(KZ)satisfied as with fat and fatness,
And my mouth offers ^(LA)praises with joyful lips.

⁶When I remember You ^(LB)on my bed,
I meditate on You in the ^(LC)night watches,
⁷For ^(LD)You have been my help,
And in the ^(LE)shadow of Your wings I sing for joy.
⁸My soul ^(LF)clings ^[eb]to You;
Your ^(LG)right hand takes hold of me.

⁹But those who ^(LH)seek my ^[ec]life to destroy it,
Will go into the ^[ed]^(LI)depths of the earth.
¹⁰^[ee]They will be ^[ef]^(LJ)turned over to the power of the sword;
They will be a ^[eg]^(LK)prey for foxes.
¹¹But the ^(LL)king will rejoice in God;
Everyone who ^(LM)swears by Him will boast,
For the ^(LN)mouths of those who speak lies will be stopped.

Prayer for Rescue from Secret Enemies.

64 Hear my voice, God, in ^(LO)my ^[eh]complaint;
^(LP)Protect my life from dread of the enemy.
²Hide me from the ^(LQ)secret discussion of evildoers,
From the restlessness of ^(LR)the workers of injustice,
³Who ^(LS)have sharpened their tongues like a sword.
They ^(LT)aimed bitter speech as their arrows,
⁴To ^(LU)shoot ^[ei]from concealment at the innocent;
Suddenly they shoot at him, and ^(LV)do not fear.
⁵They make firm for themselves an evil ^[ej]purpose;
They ^[ek]talk of ^(LW)setting snares secretly;
They say, “^(LX)Who can see them?”
⁶They ^[el]devise injustices, saying,
“We are ^[em]ready with a well-conceived plot”;
For the ^[en]^(LY)inward thought and the heart of a person are ^[eo]deep.

⁷But ^(LZ)God ^[ep]will shoot an arrow at them;
Suddenly ^[eq]they will be wounded.
⁸So ^[er]they ^[es]will ^(MA)make him stumble;
^(MB)Their own tongue is against them;
All who see them will ^(MC)shake their heads.
⁹Then all people ^[et]will ^(MD)fear,
And they ^[eu]will ^(ME)declare the work of God,
And ^[ev]will consider ^[ew]what He has done.
¹⁰The righteous person will be ^(MF)glad in the Lord and ^(MG)take refuge in Him;
And all the upright in heart will boast.

God’s Abundant Favor to Earth and Mankind.

65 There will be silence ^[ex]before You, and praise in Zion, God,
And the ^(MH)vow will be fulfilled for You.
²You who hear prayer,
To You ^(MI)all ^[ey]mankind comes.
³^[ez]^(MJ)Wrongdoings prevail against me;
As for our offenses, You ^[fa]^(MK)forgive them.
⁴^(ML)Blessed is the one You ^(MM)choose and allow to approach You;
He will dwell in Your courtyards.
We will be ^(MN)satisfied with the goodness of Your house,
Your holy temple.

⁵By ^(MO)awesome deeds You answer us in righteousness, ^(MP)God of our salvation,
You who are the trust of all the ^(MQ)ends of the earth and the farthest ^[fb]^(MR)sea;
⁶Who ^(MS)establishes the mountains by His strength,

And anger also mounted against Israel,

¹Have mercy^(B) on me, O God,

    blot out^(E) my transgressions.^(F)

³For I know my transgressions,
