Israel’s History after the Exodus

1 These are the words that Moses spoke to all Israel (A)across the Jordan in the wilderness, in the (B)Arabah opposite [a]Suph, between Paran and Tophel, Laban, Hazeroth, and Dizahab. 2 It is eleven days’ journey from (C)Horeb by way of Mount (D)Seir to (E)Kadesh-barnea. 3 In the (F)fortieth year, on the first day of the eleventh month, Moses spoke to the sons of Israel, (G)in accordance with everything that the Lord had commanded him to declare to them, 4 after he had [b](H)defeated Sihon the king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon, and (I)Og the king of Bashan, who lived in (J)Ashtaroth [c]and in Edrei. 5 Across the Jordan in the land of Moab, Moses began to explain this Law, saying,

6 “The Lord our God (K)spoke to us at Horeb, saying, ‘You have stayed long enough at this mountain. 7 Turn and set out on your journey, and go to (L)the hill country of the Amorites, and to all their neighbors in the Arabah, in the hill country, in the lowland, in (M)the [d]Negev, by the seacoast, the land of the Canaanites, and Lebanon, as far as the great river, the river Euphrates. 8 See, I have placed the land before you; go in and take possession of the land which the Lord (N)swore to give to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, and their [e]descendants after them.’

9 “And I spoke to you at that time, saying, ‘(O)I am not able to endure you alone. 10 The Lord your God has (P)multiplied you, and behold, you are this day like the stars of heaven in number. 11 May the Lord, the God of your fathers increase you a thousand times more than you are, and bless you, (Q)just as He has [f]promised you! 12 How can I alone endure the burden and weight of you and your strife? 13 (R)Obtain for yourselves men who are wise, discerning, and informed from your tribes, and I will appoint them as your heads.’ 14 And you answered me and said, ‘The thing which you have said to do is good.’ 15 So I took the heads of your tribes, wise and informed men, and [g]appointed them as heads over you, commanders of thousands, [h]hundreds, [i]fifties, and [j]tens, and officers for your tribes.

16 “Then I ordered your judges at that time, saying, ‘Hear the cases between your fellow countrymen and (S)judge righteously between a person and his fellow countryman, or the stranger who is with him. 17 (T)You are not to [k]show partiality in judgment; you shall hear the small and the great alike. You are (U)not to be afraid of any person, for the judgment is God’s. (V)The case that is too difficult for you, you shall bring to me, and I will hear it.’ 18 At that time (W)I commanded you all the things that you were to do.

19 “Then we set out from (X)Horeb, and went through all that (Y)great and terrible wilderness that you saw on the way to the (Z)hill country of the Amorites, just as the Lord our God had commanded us; and we came to (AA)Kadesh-barnea. 20 And I said to you, ‘You have come to the hill country of the Amorites, which the Lord our God is about to give us. 21 See, the Lord your God has placed the land before you; go up, take possession, just as the Lord, the God of your fathers, has spoken to you. (AB)Do not fear or be dismayed.’

22 “(AC)Then all of you approached me and said, ‘Let us send men ahead of us, so that they may spy out the land for us, and bring back to us word of the way by which we should go up, and the cities which we should enter.’ 23 The [l]plan pleased me, and I took twelve of your men, one man for each tribe. 24 Then (AD)they turned and went up into the hill country, and came to the Valley of Eshcol, and spied it out. 25 And they took some of the fruit of the land in their hands and brought it down to us. They also brought us back a report and said, ‘The land that the Lord our God is about to give us is good.’

26 “(AE)Yet you were unwilling to go up; instead you (AF)rebelled against the [m]command of the Lord your God; 27 and (AG)you grumbled in your tents and said, ‘Because the Lord hates us, He has brought us out of the land of Egypt, to hand us over to the Amorites to destroy us. 28 Where can we go up? Our brothers have made our hearts melt, by saying, “The people are bigger and taller than we; the cities are large and fortified up to heaven. And besides, we saw (AH)the sons of the Anakim there.”’ 29 But I said to you, ‘Do not be terrified, nor fear them. 30 The Lord your God, who goes before you, will (AI)Himself fight for you, [n]just as He did for you in Egypt before your eyes, 31 and in the wilderness where you saw how (AJ)the Lord your God carried you, just as a man carries his son, on all of the road which you have walked until you came to this place.’ 32 Yet [o](AK)in spite of all this, you did not trust the Lord your God, 33 (AL)who goes before you on your way, (AM)to seek out a place for you to make camp, in the fire by night to show you the way by which you should go, and in the cloud by day.

34 “Then the Lord heard the sound of your words, and He was angry and (AN)swore an oath, saying, 35 ‘(AO)Not one of these men, this evil generation, shall see the good land which I swore to give your fathers, 36 except Caleb the son of Jephunneh; he shall see it, and (AP)to him I will give the land on which he has set foot, and to his sons, because he has followed the Lord fully.’ 37 (AQ)The Lord was angry with me also on your account, saying, ‘(AR)Not even you shall enter there. 38 Joshua the son of Nun, who stands before you, (AS)shall himself enter there; encourage him, for (AT)he will give it to Israel as an inheritance. 39 Moreover, (AU)your little ones who, you said, would become plunder, and your sons, who this day have (AV)no knowledge of good and evil, shall enter there, and I will give it to them and they shall take possession of it. 40 But as for you, (AW)turn around and set out for the wilderness by the way of the [p]Red Sea.’

41 “(AX)Then you replied to me, ‘We have sinned against the Lord; we ourselves will go up and fight, just as the Lord our God commanded us.’ And every man of you strapped on his weapons of war, and you viewed it as easy to go up into the hill country. 42 (AY)But the Lord said to me, ‘Say to them, “Do not go up nor fight, for I am not among you; otherwise you will be [q]defeated [r]by your enemies.”’ 43 So I spoke to you, but you would not listen. Instead, (AZ)you rebelled against the [s]command of the Lord, and acted presumptuously and went up into the hill country. 44 (BA)And the Amorites who lived in that hill country came out against you and chased you (BB)as bees do, and they scattered you from Seir to Hormah. 45 Then you returned and wept before the Lord; but the (BC)Lord did not listen to your voice, nor pay attention to you. 46 So you remained at (BD)Kadesh for many days, [t]the days that you spent there.

Wanderings in the Wilderness

2 “(BE)Then we turned and set out for the wilderness by the way of the [u]Red Sea, as the Lord spoke to me, and we circled (BF)Mount Seir for many days. 2 And the Lord spoke to me, saying, 3 ‘You have circled this mountain long enough. Now turn north, 4 (BG)and command the people, saying, “You are going to pass through the (BH)territory of your brothers the sons of Esau, who live in Seir; and (BI)they will be afraid of you. So be very careful; 5 do not [v]provoke them, for I will not give you any of their land, not even as much as a [w]footprint, (BJ)because I have given Mount Seir to Esau as a possession. 6 You are to buy food from them with money so that you may eat, and you shall also purchase water from them with money so that you may drink. 7 For the Lord your God has blessed you in all [x]that you have done; He has known your [y]wandering through this (BK)great wilderness. These (BL)forty years the Lord your God has been with you; you have not lacked anything.”’

8 “So we passed beyond our brothers the sons of Esau, who live in Seir, away from the (BM)Arabah road, away from Elath and (BN)Ezion-geber. And we turned and passed through by the way of the wilderness of Moab. 9 Then the Lord said to me, ‘Do not attack Moab, nor provoke them to war, for I will not give you any of [z]their land as a possession, because I have given (BO)Ar to (BP)the sons of Lot as a possession.’ 10 (The (BQ)Emim lived there previously, a people as great, numerous, and tall as the Anakim. 11 Like the Anakim, they too are regarded as (BR)Rephaim, but the Moabites call them Emim. 12 (BS)The Horites previously lived in Seir, but the sons of Esau dispossessed them and destroyed them from before [aa]them, and settled in their place; (BT)just as Israel did to the land of [ab]their possession which the Lord gave them.) 13 ‘Now arise and cross over the [ac]Wadi Zered yourselves.’ So we crossed over the [ad]Wadi Zered. 14 Now the [ae]time that it took for us to come from Kadesh-barnea until we crossed over the [af]Wadi Zered was (BU)thirty-eight years, until (BV)all the generation of the men of war perished from within the camp, just as (BW)the Lord had sworn to them. 15 (BX)Indeed, the hand of the Lord was against them, to destroy them from within the camp until they all perished.

16 “So it came about, when (BY)all the men of war had finally perished from among the people, 17 that the Lord spoke to me, saying, 18 ‘Today you shall cross over (BZ)Ar, the border of Moab. 19 When you come opposite the (CA)sons of Ammon, do not attack them nor provoke them, for I will not give you any of the land of the sons of Ammon as a possession, because I have given it to (CB)the sons of Lot as a possession.’ 20 (It is also regarded as the land of the (CC)Rephaim, because the Rephaim previously lived in it, but the Ammonites call them Zamzummin, 21 a people as great, numerous, and tall as the Anakim; but the Lord destroyed them before [ag]them. And they dispossessed them and settled in their place, 22 just as He did for the sons of Esau, who (CD)live in Seir, when He destroyed (CE)the Horites from before them; they dispossessed them and settled in their place, where they remain even to this day. 23 And as for the (CF)Avvim, who lived in villages as far as Gaza, the [ah](CG)Caphtorim, who came from [ai](CH)Caphtor, destroyed them and lived in their place.) 24 ‘Arise, set out, and pass through the [aj](CI)Valley of Arnon. Look! I have handed over to you Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land; start taking possession and plunge into battle with him. 25 This day I will begin to put (CJ)the dread and fear of you upon the faces of [ak]people everywhere, [al]who, when they hear the news of you, (CK)will tremble and be in anguish because of you.’

26 “(CL)So I sent messengers from the wilderness of Kedemoth to Sihon king of Heshbon with words of peace, saying, 27 ‘Let me pass through your land; I will [am]travel only on the road. I will not turn aside to the right or to the left. 28 You will sell me food for money so that I may eat, and give me water for money so that I may drink, (CM)only let me pass through on [an]foot, 29 just as the sons of Esau who live in Seir and the Moabites who live in (CN)Ar did for me, until I cross over the Jordan into the land that the Lord our God is giving us.’ 30 But (CO)Sihon king of Heshbon was not willing for us to pass [ao]through his land; for the (CP)Lord your God hardened his spirit and made his heart obstinate, in order to hand him over to you, as he is today. 31 And the Lord said to me, ‘See, I have begun to turn Sihon and his land over [ap]to you. Begin taking possession, so that you may possess his land.’

32 “Then Sihon came out [aq]with all his people to meet us in battle at Jahaz. 33 And (CQ)the Lord our God turned him over [ar]to us, and we [as](CR)defeated him with his sons and all his people. 34 So we captured all his cities at that time and [at](CS)utterly destroyed [au]the men, women, and children of every city. We left no survivor. 35 We took (CT)only the animals as our plunder, and the spoils of the cities which we had captured. 36 From (CU)Aroer which is on the edge of the [av]Valley of Arnon and from the city which is in the [aw]valley, even to Gilead, there was no city that was too [ax]high for us; the Lord our God turned it all over [ay]to us. 37 (CV)Only you did not go near the land of the sons of Ammon, all along the [az]river (CW)Jabbok and the cities of the hill country, and wherever the Lord our God had commanded us to avoid.

Conquests Recounted

3 “(CX)Then we turned and went up the road to Bashan, and Og, king of Bashan, came out [ba]with all his people to meet us in battle at Edrei. 2 But the Lord said to me, ‘Do not fear him, for I have handed him and all his people and his land over to you; and you shall do to him just as you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon.’ 3 So the Lord our God also handed over to us Og, king of Bashan, with all his people, and we struck [bb]them until no survivor was [bc]left. 4 We captured all his cities at that time; there was not a city which we did not take from them: sixty cities, all the region of (CY)Argob, the kingdom of Og in Bashan. 5 All these were cities fortified with high walls, gates, and bars, besides a great many [bd]unwalled towns. 6 We [be]utterly destroyed them, as we did to (CZ)Sihon king of Heshbon, [bf](DA)utterly destroying [bg]the men, women, and children of every city. 7 (DB)But all the animals and the spoils of the cities we took as our plunder.

8 “(DC)So at that time we took the land from the hand of the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, from the [bh]Valley of Arnon to Mount Hermon 9 (Sidonians (DD)call Hermon (DE)Sirion, and the Amorites call it (DF)Senir): 10 all the cities of the plateau, all Gilead, and (DG)all Bashan, as far as Salecah and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan. 11 (For only Og king of Bashan was left of the remnant of the (DH)Rephaim. Behold, his [bi]bed was a [bj]bed of iron; it is in (DI)Rabbah of the sons of Ammon. Its length was nine cubits, and its width four cubits by [bk]the usual cubit.)

12 “So we took possession of this land at that time. From (DJ)Aroer, which is by the [bl]Valley of Arnon, and half the hill country of (DK)Gilead and its cities I gave to the Reubenites and to the Gadites. 13 The rest of Gilead and all Bashan, the kingdom of Og, I gave to the half-tribe of Manasseh, all the region of Argob. (As to all Bashan, it is called the land of Rephaim. 14 (DL)Jair the son of Manasseh took all the region of Argob as far as the border of the Geshurites and the Maacathites, that is, Bashan, and named [bm]it after his own name: [bn]Havvoth-jair, as it is to this day.) 15 (DM)To Machir I gave Gilead. 16 To the Reubenites and the Gadites I gave from Gilead even as far as the [bo]Valley of Arnon, the middle of the [bp]valley [bq]as a border, and as far as the [br]river (DN)Jabbok, the border of the sons of Ammon; 17 the Arabah also, with the Jordan [bs]as a border, from [bt](DO)Chinnereth (DP)even as far as the sea of the Arabah, (DQ)the Salt Sea, [bu]at the foot of the slopes of Pisgah on the east.

18 “Then I commanded you at that time, saying, ‘(DR)The Lord your God has given you this land to possess it; (DS)all you [bv]valiant men shall cross over armed ahead of your brothers, the sons of Israel. 19 (DT)However, your wives, your little ones, and your livestock (I know that you have (DU)much livestock) shall remain in your cities which I have given you, 20 (DV)until the Lord gives rest to your fellow countrymen as to you, and they also take possession of the land which the Lord your God is giving them beyond the Jordan. (DW)Then you may return, each man to his possession which I have given you.’ 21 And I commanded Joshua at that time, saying, ‘Your eyes have seen everything that the Lord your God has done to these two kings; the Lord will do the same to all the kingdoms into which you are about to cross. 22 Do not fear them, for the Lord your God (DX)is the One fighting for you.’

23 “I also pleaded with the Lord at that time, saying, 24 ‘Lord [bw]God, You have begun to show Your servant (DY)Your greatness and Your strong hand; for what (DZ)god is there in heaven or on earth who can do such works and mighty acts as Yours? 25 Please let me cross over and see the (EA)good land that is beyond the Jordan, [bx]that good hill country, and Lebanon.’ 26 But (EB)the Lord was angry with me on your account, and would not listen to me; instead, the Lord said to me, ‘[by]Enough! Do not speak to Me any more about this matter. 27 Go up to the top of (EC)Pisgah and raise your eyes to the west, the north, the south, and the east, and see it with your eyes; (ED)for you shall not cross over this Jordan. 28 (EE)But commission Joshua and encourage him and strengthen him, (EF)for he shall go across [bz]leading this people, and he will give to them, as an inheritance, the land which you will see.’ 29 So we remained in the valley opposite (EG)Beth-peor.

Israel Urged to Obey God’s Law

4 “Now, Israel, listen to the statutes and the judgments which (EH)I am teaching you to perform, so that (EI)you will live and go in and take possession of the land which the Lord, the God of your fathers, is giving you. 2 (EJ)You shall not add to the word which (EK)I am commanding you, nor take away from it, so that you may keep the commandments of the Lord your God which I am commanding you. 3 (EL)Your eyes have seen what the Lord has done in the case of Baal-peor, for all the men who followed Baal-peor, the Lord your God has destroyed [ca]them from among you. 4 But you who clung to the Lord your God are alive today, every one of you.

5 “See, I have taught you statutes and judgments (EM)just as the Lord my God commanded me, that you are to do these things in the land where you are entering to take possession of it. 6 So keep and do them, (EN)for that is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples who will hear all these statutes and say, ‘Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.’ 7 For (EO)what great nation is there that has a god (EP)so near to it as is the Lord our God (EQ)whenever we call on Him? 8 Or what great nation is there that has (ER)statutes and judgments as righteous as this whole Law which I am setting before you today?

9 “Only (ES)be careful for yourself and watch over your soul diligently, so that you do not forget the things which your eyes have seen and they do not depart from your heart (ET)all the days of your life; but (EU)make them known to your sons and your grandsons. 10 Remember the day you stood before the Lord your God at Horeb, when the Lord said to me, ‘Assemble the people to Me, that I may have them hear My words (EV)so that they may learn to [cb]fear Me all the days that they live on the earth, and that they may (EW)teach their children.’ 11 You came forward and stood at the foot of the mountain, (EX)and the mountain was burning with fire to the heart of the heavens: darkness, cloud, and thick gloom. 12 Then the Lord spoke to you from the midst of the fire; you heard the sound of words, but you saw no form—there was only a voice. 13 So He declared to you His covenant which He commanded you to perform, that is, (EY)the Ten [cc]Commandments; and (EZ)He wrote them on two tablets of stone. 14 The Lord commanded me at that time to teach you statutes and judgments, so that you would perform them in the land where you are going over to take possession of it.

15 “So (FA)be very careful [cd]yourselves, since you did not see any (FB)form on the day the Lord spoke to you at Horeb from the midst of the fire, 16 so that you do not (FC)act corruptly and (FD)make a carved image for yourselves in the form of any figure, a representation of male or female, 17 a representation of any animal that is on the earth, a representation of (FE)any winged bird that flies in the sky, 18 a representation of anything that crawls on the ground, or a representation of any fish that is in the water below the earth. 19 And be careful not to raise your eyes to heaven and look at the sun, the moon, and the stars, (FF)all the heavenly [ce]lights, (FG)and allow yourself to be drawn away and worship them and serve them, things which the Lord your God has allotted to all the peoples under the whole heaven. 20 But the Lord has taken you and brought you out of (FH)the iron furnace, from Egypt, to (FI)be a people of His own possession, as today.

21 “(FJ)Now the Lord was angry with me on your account, and He swore that I would not cross the Jordan, and that I would not enter the good land which the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance. 22 For (FK)I am going to die in this land; I am not crossing the Jordan, but you are going to cross, and you will take possession of this (FL)good land. 23 So be careful [cf]yourselves, (FM)that you do not forget the covenant of the Lord your God which He made with you, and (FN)make for yourselves a carved image in the form of anything against which the Lord your God has commanded you. 24 For the Lord your God is a (FO)consuming fire, a (FP)jealous God.

25 “When you father children and have [cg]grandchildren, and you grow old in the land, and you (FQ)act corruptly, and (FR)make [ch]an idol in the form of anything, and (FS)do what is evil in the sight of the Lord your God to provoke Him to anger, 26 I (FT)call heaven and earth as witnesses against you today, that you will (FU)certainly perish quickly from the land where you are going over the Jordan to take possession of it. You will not [ci]live long on it, but will be utterly destroyed. 27 The Lord will (FV)scatter you among the peoples, and you will be left few in number among the nations where the Lord drives you. 28 (FW)There you will serve gods, the work of human hands, (FX)wood and stone, (FY)which neither see nor hear, nor eat nor smell anything. 29 (FZ)But from there you will seek the Lord your God, and you will find Him if you search for Him (GA)with all your heart and all your soul. 30 When you (GB)are in distress and all these things happen to you, (GC)in the latter days (GD)you will return to the Lord your God and listen to His voice. 31 For the Lord your God is a (GE)compassionate God; (GF)He will not abandon you nor (GG)destroy you, nor (GH)forget the covenant with your fathers which He swore to them.

32 “Indeed, (GI)ask now about the earlier days that were [cj]before your time, since the (GJ)day that God created [ck]mankind on the earth, and inquire (GK)from one end of the heavens to the other. (GL)Has anything been done like this great thing, or has anything been heard like it? 33 (GM)Has any people heard the voice of God speaking from the midst of the fire, as you have heard it, and survived? 34 (GN)Or has a god ventured to go to take for himself a nation from within another nation (GO)by trials, by signs and wonders, by war, (GP)by a mighty hand, by an outstretched arm, and by great terrors, [cl]just as the Lord your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes? 35 You were shown these things so that you might know that the Lord, He is God; (GQ)there is no other besides Him. 36 (GR)Out of the heavens He let you hear His voice (GS)to discipline you; and on earth He let you see His great fire, and you heard His words from the midst of the fire. 37 (GT)Because He loved your fathers, He chose [cm]their descendants after them. And He [cn](GU)personally brought you from Egypt by His great power, 38 driving out from before you nations greater and mightier than you, to bring you in and (GV)to give you their land as an inheritance, as it is today. 39 Therefore know today, and take it to your heart, that (GW)the Lord, He is God in heaven above and on the earth below; there is no other. 40 (GX)So you shall keep His statutes and His commandments which I am [co]giving you today, so that (GY)it may go well for you and for your children after you, and (GZ)that you may [cp]live long on the land which the Lord your God is giving you for all time.”

41 (HA)Then Moses set apart three cities across the Jordan to the [cq]east, 42 for [cr]one to flee there who unintentionally killed his neighbor, without having hatred for him in time past; and by fleeing to one of these cities he might live: 43 (HB)Bezer in the wilderness on the plateau for the Reubenites, Ramoth in Gilead for the Gadites, and Golan in Bashan for the Manassites.

44 Now this is the Law which Moses set before the sons of Israel; 45 these are the testimonies and the statutes, and the ordinances which Moses spoke to the sons of Israel, when they came out of Egypt, 46 across the Jordan, in the valley (HC)opposite Beth-peor, in the land of (HD)Sihon king of the Amorites who lived in Heshbon, whom Moses and the sons of Israel [cs]defeated when they came out of Egypt. 47 And they took possession of his land and the land of (HE)Og king of Bashan, the two kings of the Amorites, who were across the Jordan to the [ct]east, 48 from (HF)Aroer, which is on the edge of the [cu]Valley of Arnon, even as far as (HG)Mount Sion (that is, Hermon), 49 with all the Arabah across the Jordan to the east, even as far as the sea of the Arabah, [cv]at the foot of the slopes of Pisgah.

The Ten Commandments Repeated

5 Now Moses summoned all Israel and said to them:

“Listen, Israel, to the statutes and ordinances which I am speaking today [cw]for you to hear, so that you may learn them and be careful to do them. 2 The Lord our God made (HH)a covenant with us at Horeb. 3 (HI)The Lord did not make this covenant with our fathers, but with us, all [cx]of us who are alive here today. 4 The Lord spoke with you (HJ)face to face at the mountain (HK)from the midst of the fire, 5 while (HL)I was standing between the Lord and you at that time, to declare to you the word of the Lord; (HM)for you were afraid because of the fire, and you did not go up on the mountain. [cy]He said,

6 ‘(HN)I am the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of [cz]slavery.

7 ‘(HO)You shall have no other gods besides Me.

8 ‘(HP)You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any [da]likeness of what is in heaven above [db]or on the earth beneath [dc]or in the water under the earth. 9 You shall not worship them nor serve them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, (HQ)inflicting the [dd]punishment of the fathers on the children, [de]even on the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, 10 but (HR)showing [df]favor to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.

11 ‘(HS)You shall not take the name of the Lord your God [dg]in vain, for the Lord will not [dh]leave unpunished the one who takes His name in vain.

22 “These words the Lord spoke to your whole assembly at the mountain from the midst of the fire, from the cloud, and from the thick darkness, with a great voice, and He added nothing more. (ID)He wrote them on two tablets of stone and gave them to me. 23 And when you heard the voice from the midst of the darkness, while the mountain was burning with fire, you approached me, all the heads of your tribes and your elders. 24 You said, ‘Behold, the Lord our God has shown us His glory and His greatness, and we have heard His voice from the midst of the fire; we have seen today that God speaks with mankind, yet he lives. 25 (IE)Now then, why should we die? For this great fire will consume us; if we hear the voice of the Lord our God any longer, then we will die! 26 For (IF)who is there of [dm]humanity who has heard the voice of the living God speaking from the midst of the fire, as we have, and lived? 27 [dn]Go near and listen to everything that the Lord our God says; then speak to us everything that the Lord our God speaks to you, and we will listen and do it.’

They have done well in all that they have spoken. 29 (IH)If only they had such a heart in them, to fear Me and (II)keep all My commandments always, so that (IJ)it would go well with them and with their sons forever! 30 Go, say to them, “Return to your tents.” 31 (IK)But as for you, stand here by Me, that I may speak to you all the commandments, the statutes, and the judgments which you shall teach them, so that they may [do]follow them in the land which I am giving them to possess.’ 32 So you shall be careful to do just as the Lord your God has commanded you; (IL)you shall not turn aside to the right or to the left. 33 (IM)You shall walk [dp]entirely in the way which the Lord your God has commanded you, (IN)so that you may live and that it may be well for you, and that you may prolong your days in the land which you will possess.

Obey God and Prosper

6 “Now this is the commandment, the statutes, and the judgments which the Lord your God has commanded me to teach you, so that you may do them in the land where you are going over to take possession of it, 2 so that you, your son, and your grandson will (IO)fear the Lord your God, to keep all His statutes and His commandments which I command you, (IP)all the days of your life, and that your days may be prolonged. 3 Now Israel, you shall listen and be careful to do them, so that (IQ)it may go well for you and that you may increase greatly, just as the Lord, the God of your fathers, has [dq]promised you, in (IR)a land flowing with milk and honey.

4 “(IS)Hear, Israel! The Lord is our God, the (IT)Lord is one! 5 And (IU)you shall love the Lord your God (IV)with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. 6 (IW)These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart. 7 And (IX)you shall repeat them diligently to your sons and speak of them when you sit in your house, when you walk on the road, when you lie down, and when you get up. 8 (IY)You shall also tie them as a [dr]sign to your [ds]hand, and they shall be as [dt]frontlets [du]on your forehead. 9 (IZ)You shall also write them on the [dv]doorposts of your house and on your gates.

10 “Then it shall come about when the Lord your God brings you into the land that He swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give you, (JA)great and splendid cities which you did not build, 11 and houses full of all good things which you did not fill, and carved cisterns which you did not carve out, vineyards and olive trees which you did not plant, and (JB)you eat and are satisfied, 12 be [dw]careful that (JC)you do not forget the Lord who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of [dx]slavery. 13 (JD)You shall [dy]fear only the Lord your God; and you shall [dz]worship Him and (JE)swear by His name. 14 (JF)You shall not follow other gods, any of the gods of the peoples who surround you, 15 for the Lord your God who is in the midst of you is a (JG)jealous God; so follow Him, or else the anger of the Lord your God will be kindled against you, and He will [ea]wipe you off the face of the earth.

16 “(JH)You shall not put the Lord your God to the test, (JI)as you tested Him at Massah. 17 (JJ)You shall diligently keep the commandments of the Lord your God, and His provisions and His statutes which He has commanded you. 18 You shall do what is right and good in the sight of the Lord, so that (JK)it may go well for you and that you may go in and take possession of the good land which the Lord swore to give your fathers, 19 by driving out all your enemies from you, as the Lord has spoken.

20 “(JL)When your son asks you in time to come, saying, ‘What do the provisions and the statutes and the judgments mean which the Lord our God commanded you?’ 21 then you shall say to your son, ‘We were slaves to Pharaoh in Egypt, and the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand. 22 Moreover, the Lord provided great and terrible signs and wonders before our eyes against Egypt, Pharaoh, and all his household; 23 He brought us out of there in order to bring us in, to give us the land which He had sworn to our fathers.’ 24 So the Lord commanded us to [eb]follow all these statutes, (JM)to fear the Lord our God for our own good always and (JN)for our survival, as it is today. 25 And (JO)it will be righteousness for us if we are careful to [ec]follow all this commandment before the Lord our God, just as He commanded us.

7 “(JP)When the Lord your God brings you into the land where you are entering to take possession of it, and He drives away many nations from before you, the Hittites, the Girgashites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, (JQ)seven nations greater and mightier than you, 2 and when the Lord your God turns them over to you and you [ed]defeat them, (JR)you shall [ee]utterly destroy them. (JS)You shall not make a covenant with them (JT)nor be gracious to them. 3 Furthermore, (JU)you shall not intermarry with them: you shall not give your [ef]daughters to [eg]their sons, nor shall you take [eh]their daughters for your [ei]sons. 4 For [ej]they will turn your [ek]sons away from [el]following Me, and they will serve other gods; then the anger of the Lord will be kindled against you and (JV)He will quickly destroy you. 5 But this is what you shall do to them: (JW)you shall tear down their altars, smash their memorial stones, cut their [em]Asherim to pieces, and burn their carved images in the fire. 6 For you are (JX)a holy people to the Lord your God; the Lord your God has chosen you to be (JY)a people for His personal possession out of all the peoples who are on the face of the [en]earth.

7 “(JZ)The Lord did not [eo]make you His beloved nor choose you because you were greater in number than any of the peoples, since you were the fewest of all peoples, 8 but because the Lord loved you and kept the (KA)oath which He swore to your forefathers, (KB)the Lord brought you out by a mighty hand and redeemed you from the house of [ep]slavery, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt. 9 Know therefore that the Lord your God, (KC)He is God, (KD)the faithful God, (KE)who keeps [eq]His covenant and [er]His faithfulness to a thousand generations for those who (KF)love Him and keep His commandments; 10 but He (KG)repays those who hate Him to [es]their faces, to eliminate [et]them; He will not hesitate toward him who hates Him, He will repay him to his face. 11 Therefore, you shall keep the commandment, the statutes, and the judgments which I am commanding you today, to do them.

Promises of God

12 “(KH)Then it shall come about, because you listen to these judgments and keep and do them, that the Lord your God will keep [eu]His covenant with you and [ev]His faithfulness which He swore to your forefathers. 13 And He will (KI)love you, bless you, and (KJ)make you numerous; He will also bless the fruit of your womb and the fruit of your ground, your grain, your new wine, and your oil, the newborn of your cattle and the offspring of your flock, [ew]in the land which He swore to your forefathers to give you. 14 You shall be blessed above all peoples; there will be no sterile male or (KK)infertile female among you or among your cattle. 15 And (KL)the Lord will remove from you all sickness; and He will not inflict upon you any of the harmful diseases of Egypt which you have known, but He will give them to all who hate you. 16 You shall consume all the peoples whom the Lord your God will turn over to you; (KM)your eye shall not pity them, nor shall you serve their gods, for that would be (KN)a snare to you.

17 “If you say in your heart, ‘These nations are greater than I; how can I (KO)dispossess them?’ 18 you are not to be afraid of them; you shall (KP)remember well what the Lord your God did to Pharaoh and to all Egypt: 19 (KQ)the great trials which your eyes saw and the signs and the wonders, and the mighty hand and the outstretched arm by which the Lord your God brought you out. The Lord your God will do the same to all the peoples of whom you are afraid. 20 Indeed, the Lord your God will send (KR)the hornet against them, until those who are left and hide themselves from you perish. 21 You are not to be terrified of them, because (KS)the Lord your God is in your midst, (KT)a great and awesome God. 22 (KU)And the Lord your God will drive away these nations from you little by little; you will not be able to put an end to them quickly, otherwise the [ex]wild animals would become too numerous for you. 23 (KV)But the Lord your God will turn them over to you, and will [ey]throw them into great confusion until they are destroyed. 24 (KW)And He will hand over their kings to you, so that you will eliminate their name from under heaven; (KX)no one will be able to stand against you until you have destroyed them. 25 The carved images of their gods you are to (KY)burn with fire; you shall (KZ)not covet the silver or the gold that is on them, nor take it for yourselves, or you will be (LA)trapped by it; for it is an (LB)abomination to the Lord your God. 26 And you shall not bring an abomination into your house and become (LC)designated for destruction, like it; you are to utterly detest it, and you are to utterly loathe it, for it is something designated for destruction.

God’s Gracious Dealings

8 “All the commandments that I am commanding you today you shall be careful to do, so that you (LD)may live and increase, and go in and take possession of the land which the Lord swore to give to your forefathers. 2 (LE)And you shall remember all the way which the Lord your God has (LF)led you in the wilderness these forty years, in order to humble you, (LG)putting you to the test, to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep His commandments or not. 3 And He humbled you and let you go hungry, and fed you with the manna which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, in order to make you [ez]understand that (LH)man shall not live on bread alone, but man shall live on everything that comes out of the mouth of the Lord. 4 (LI)Your clothing did not wear out on you, nor did your foot swell these forty years. 5 (LJ)So you are to know in your heart that the Lord your God was disciplining you just as a man disciplines his son. 6 Therefore, you shall keep the commandments of the Lord your God, to walk in His ways and to [fa]fear Him. 7 For (LK)the Lord your God is bringing you into a good land, a land of streams of water, of fountains and springs, flowing out in valleys and hills; 8 a land of wheat and barley, of vines, fig trees, and pomegranates, a land of olive oil and honey; 9 a land where you will eat food without shortage, in which you will not lack anything; a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills you can dig copper. 10 When (LL)you have eaten and are satisfied, you shall bless the Lord your God for the good land which He has given you.

11 “Be careful that you do not (LM)forget the Lord your God by failing to keep His commandments, His ordinances, and His statutes which I am commanding you today; 12 otherwise, (LN)when you eat and are satisfied, and you build good houses and live in them, 13 and when your herds and your flocks increase, and your silver and gold increase, and everything that you have increases, 14 then your heart will [fb]become proud and you will (LO)forget the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of [fc]slavery; 15 He who led you through (LP)the great and terrible wilderness, with its (LQ)fiery serpents and scorpions, and its thirsty ground where there was no water; He who (LR)brought water for you out of the rock of flint. 16 In the wilderness it was He who fed you manna (LS)which your fathers did not know, in order to humble you and in order to (LT)put you to the test, to do good for you [fd]in the end. 17 Otherwise, (LU)you may say in your heart, ‘My power and the strength of my hand made me this wealth.’ 18 But you are to remember the Lord your God, for (LV)it is He who is giving you power to make wealth, in order to confirm His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day. 19 And it shall come about, if you ever forget the Lord your God and follow other gods and serve and worship them, (LW)I testify against you today that you will certainly perish. 20 Like the nations that the Lord eliminates from you, so (LX)you shall perish, because you would not listen to the voice of the Lord your God.

Israel Provoked God

9 “Hear, Israel! You are crossing the Jordan today, to go in to dispossess (LY)nations greater and mightier than you, cities that are great and (LZ)fortified to heaven, 2 a people who are great and tall, the sons of the Anakim, whom you know and of whom you have heard it said, ‘(MA)Who can stand against the sons of Anak?’ 3 So be aware today that (MB)it is the Lord your God who is crossing over ahead of you as (MC)a consuming fire. He will destroy them and He will subdue them before you, so that (MD)you may drive them out and eliminate them quickly, just as the Lord has spoken to you.

4 “(ME)Do not say in your heart when the Lord your God has driven them away from [fe]you, ‘Because of my righteousness the Lord has brought me in to take possession of this land.’ Rather, it is (MF)because of the [ff]wickedness of these nations that the Lord is dispossessing them before you. 5 It is (MG)not because of your righteousness or the uprightness of your heart that you are going in to take possession of their land, [fg]but it is because of the [fh]wickedness of these nations that the Lord your God is driving them out from before you, and in order to confirm (MH)the [fi]oath which the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

6 “Know, then, that it is not because of your righteousness that the Lord your God is giving you this good land to possess, for you are (MI)a [fj]stubborn people. 7 Remember, do not forget how you provoked the Lord your God to anger in the wilderness; (MJ)from the day that you left the land of Egypt until you arrived at this place, you have been rebellious against the Lord. 8 Even (MK)at Horeb you provoked the Lord to anger, and the Lord was so angry with you that He would have destroyed you. 9 When I went up to the mountain to receive the tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant which the Lord made with you, then I remained on the mountain for forty days and nights; (ML)I neither ate bread nor drank water. 10 The Lord gave me the two tablets of stone (MM)written by the finger of God; and on them were all the words which the Lord had spoken with you at the mountain from the midst of the fire on the day of the assembly. 11 It came about (MN)at the end of forty days and nights that the Lord gave me the two tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant. 12 (MO)Then the Lord said to me, ‘Arise, go down from here quickly, because your people, whom you brought out of Egypt, have behaved corruptly. They have (MP)quickly turned aside from the way that I commanded them; they have made a cast metal image for themselves.’ 13 The (MQ)Lord also said to [fk]me, ‘I have seen this people, and indeed, it is a [fl](MR)stubborn people. 14 (MS)Leave Me alone, that I may destroy them and (MT)wipe out their name from under heaven; and I will make of you a nation mightier and greater than they.’

15 “(MU)So I turned and came down from the mountain while the mountain was burning with fire, and the two tablets of the covenant were in my two hands. 16 And I saw that you had indeed sinned against the Lord your God. You had made for yourselves a cast metal image of a calf; you had quickly turned aside from the way that the Lord had commanded you. 17 So I took hold of the two tablets and threw them from my two hands, and smashed them to pieces before your eyes! 18 (MV)Then I fell down before the Lord (MW)like the first time, for forty days and nights; (MX)I neither ate bread nor drank water, (MY)because of all your sin which you had committed by doing what was evil in the sight of the Lord, to provoke Him to anger. 19 For (MZ)I was afraid of the anger and the rage with which the Lord was angry with you so as to destroy you; (NA)but the Lord listened to me that time as well. 20 The Lord was also angry enough with Aaron to destroy him; so I also prayed for Aaron at the same time. 21 (NB)And I took your [fm]sinful thing which you had made, the calf, and burned it in the fire and crushed it, grinding it thoroughly until it was as fine as dust; and I threw its dust into the stream that came down from the mountain.

22 “Then at (NC)Taberah, at (ND)Massah, and at (NE)Kibroth-hattaavah you kept provoking the Lord to anger. 23 And when the Lord sent you from (NF)Kadesh-barnea, saying, ‘(NG)Go up and take possession of the land which I have given you,’ you rebelled against the [fn]command of the Lord your God; (NH)you neither trusted Him nor listened to His voice. 24 (NI)You have been rebellious toward the Lord since the day I knew you.

25 “(NJ)So I fell down before the Lord for the forty days and nights, which I [fo]did because the Lord said He would destroy you. 26 (NK)And I prayed to the Lord and said, ‘Lord God, do not destroy Your people, Your inheritance, whom You have redeemed through Your greatness, whom You have brought out of Egypt with a mighty hand! 27 Remember Your servants, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; do not turn Your attention to the stubbornness of this people, or to their wickedness, or their sin. 28 Otherwise, the people of the land from which You brought us will say, “(NL)Since the Lord was not able to bring them into the land which He had [fp]promised them, and since He hated them, He has brought them out to kill them in the wilderness!” 29 Yet they are Your people, and (NM)Your inheritance, whom You brought out by Your (NN)great power and Your outstretched arm.’

The Tablets Rewritten

6 (Now the sons of Israel set out from [fs]Beeroth (OA)Bene-jaakan to Moserah. (OB)There Aaron died and there he was buried, and his son Eleazar served as priest in his place. 7 (OC)From there they set out to Gudgodah, and from Gudgodah to Jotbathah, a land of streams of water. 8 (OD)At that time the Lord singled out the tribe of Levi to carry the ark of the covenant of the Lord, to stand before the Lord (OE)to serve Him and to bless in His name, until this day. 9 (OF)Therefore, Levi does not have a portion or inheritance with his brothers; the Lord is his inheritance, just as the Lord your God spoke to him.)

10 “(OG)I, moreover, stayed on the mountain for forty days and forty nights like the first time, and the Lord listened to me that time also; the Lord was not willing to destroy you. 11 Then the Lord said to me, ‘Arise, proceed on your journey ahead of the people, so that they may go in and take possession of the land which I swore to their fathers to give them.’

12 “(OH)And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you, but to [ft]fear the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways and (OI)love Him, and to serve the Lord your God with (OJ)all your heart and with all your soul, 13 and to keep the Lord’s commandments and His statutes which I am commanding you today for your good? 14 Behold, (OK)to the Lord your God belong heaven and the [fu]highest heavens, (OL)the earth and all that is in it. 15 (OM)Yet the Lord set His affection on your fathers, to love them, and He chose their [fv]descendants after them, you over all the other peoples, as it is this day. 16 (ON)So circumcise [fw]your heart, and do not (OO)stiffen your neck any longer. 17 (OP)For the Lord your God is the God of gods and the (OQ)Lord of lords, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God, (OR)who does not show partiality, nor (OS)take a bribe. 18 He executes justice for (OT)the orphan and the widow, and shows His love for the stranger by giving him food and clothing. 19 (OU)So show your love for the stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt. 20 You shall fear the Lord your God; you shall serve Him, and (OV)cling to Him, and (OW)you shall swear by His name. 21 He is (OX)your glory and He is your God, who has done these great and awesome things for you which your eyes have seen. 22 (OY)Your fathers went down to Egypt seventy persons in all, (OZ)and now the Lord your God has made you as numerous as the stars of heaven.

Rewards of Obedience

11 “You shall therefore (PA)love the Lord your God, and always (PB)keep His directive, His statutes, His ordinances, and His commandments. 2 Know this day (PC)that I am not speaking with your sons who have not known and who have not seen the [fx]discipline of the Lord your God—His greatness, His mighty hand, His outstretched arm, 3 and (PD)His signs and His works which He did in the midst of Egypt to Pharaoh the king of Egypt and to all his land; 4 and what He did to Egypt’s army, to its horses and its chariots, (PE)when He made the water of the [fy]Red Sea [fz]engulf them while they were pursuing you, and the Lord [ga]completely eliminated them; 5 and what He did to you in the wilderness, until you came to this place; 6 and (PF)what He did to Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, the son of Reuben, when the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them, their households, their tents, and (PG)every living thing that [gb]followed them, among all Israel— 7 but your own eyes have seen all the great work of the Lord which He did.

8 “You shall therefore keep every commandment which I am commanding you today, (PH)so that you may be strong and go in and take possession of the land into which you are about to cross to possess it; 9 and (PI)so that you may prolong your days on the land which the Lord swore to your fathers to give to them and to their [gc]descendants, (PJ)a land flowing with milk and honey. 10 For the land, into which you are entering to possess it, is not like the land of Egypt from which you came, where you used to sow your seed and water it [gd]by your foot like a vegetable garden. 11 But (PK)the land into which you are about to cross to possess it, a land of hills and valleys, drinks water from the rain of heaven, 12 a land for which the Lord your God cares; (PL)the eyes of the Lord your God are continually on it, from the [ge]beginning even to the end of the year.

13 “And it shall come about, (PM)if you listen obediently to my commandments which I am commanding you today, (PN)to love the Lord your God and to serve Him (PO)with all your heart and all your soul, 14 that [gf](PP)He will provide rain for your land in its season, the [gg](PQ)early and [gh]late rain, so that you may gather your grain, your new wine, and your oil. 15 [gi](PR)He will also provide grass in your field for your cattle, and (PS)you will eat and be satisfied. 16 [gj](PT)Beware that your hearts are not easily deceived, and that you do not turn away and serve other gods, and worship them. 17 Otherwise, (PU)the anger of the Lord will be kindled against you, and He will (PV)shut up the sky (PW)so that there will be no rain, and the ground will not yield its produce; then (PX)you will quickly perish from the good land which the Lord is giving you.

26 “(QL)See, I am placing before you today a blessing and a curse: 27 the (QM)blessing, if you listen to the commandments of the Lord your God, which I am commanding you today; 28 and the (QN)curse, if you do not listen to the commandments of the Lord your God, but turn aside from the way which I am commanding you today, [gt]by following other gods which you have not known.

29 “And it shall come about, when the Lord your God brings you into the land where you are entering to possess it, (QO)that you shall place the blessing on Mount Gerizim and the curse on Mount Ebal. 30 Are they not across the Jordan, west of the road toward the sunset, in the land of the Canaanites who live in the Arabah, opposite (QP)Gilgal, beside (QQ)the [gu]oaks of Moreh? 31 For you are about to cross the Jordan to go in to take possession of the land which the Lord your God is giving you, and (QR)you shall possess it and live in it, 32 and you shall be careful to do all the statutes and the judgments which I am placing before you today.

Laws of the Sanctuary

12 “These are the statutes and the judgments which you shall carefully [gv]follow in the land which the Lord, the God of your fathers, has given you to possess [gw](QS)as long as you live on the [gx]earth. 2 You shall utterly destroy all the places where the nations whom you are going to dispossess serve their gods, on the (QT)high mountains, on the hills, and under every leafy tree. 3 And (QU)you shall tear down their altars and smash their memorial stones to pieces, and burn their [gy]Asherim in the fire, and cut to pieces the carved images of their gods; and you shall (QV)eliminate their name from that place. 4 You shall not act this way toward the Lord your God. 5 (QW)But you shall seek the Lord at the place which the Lord your God will choose from all your tribes, to establish His name there for His dwelling, and you shall come there. 6 You shall bring there your burnt offerings, your sacrifices, (QX)your tithes, the [gz]contribution of your hand, your vowed offerings, your [ha]voluntary offerings, and the firstborn of your herd and of your flock. 7 There you and your households shall eat before the Lord your God, and (QY)rejoice in all [hb]your undertakings in which the Lord your God has blessed you.

8 “You shall not do at all what we are doing here today, (QZ)everyone doing whatever is right in his own eyes; 9 for you have not as yet come to (RA)the resting place and the (RB)inheritance which the Lord your God is giving you. 10 When you cross the Jordan and live in the land which the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance, and (RC)He gives you rest from all your enemies around you so that you live in security, 11 (RD)then it shall come about that the place in which the Lord your God will choose for His name to dwell, there you shall bring everything that I command you: your burnt offerings and your sacrifices, your tithes and the [hc]contribution of your hand, and all your choice vowed offerings which you will vow to the Lord. 12 And you shall (RE)rejoice before the Lord your God, you and your sons and daughters, your male and female slaves, and the (RF)Levite who is within your gates, since (RG)he has no portion or inheritance with you.

13 “(RH)Be careful that you do not offer your burnt offerings in any cultic place that you see, 14 but only in the place which the Lord chooses in one of your tribes: there you shall offer your burnt offerings, and there you shall do everything that I command you.

15 “(RI)However, you may slaughter and eat meat within any of your gates, [hd]whatever you desire, according to the blessing of the Lord your God which He has given you; the unclean and the clean alike may eat it, as (RJ)the gazelle and the deer. 16 (RK)Only you shall not eat the blood; (RL)you are to pour it out on the ground like water. 17 (RM)You are not allowed to eat within your gates the tithe of your grain, new wine, or oil, or the firstborn of your herd or flock, or any of your vowed offerings which you vow, or your [he]voluntary offerings, or the [hf]contribution of your hand. 18 But (RN)you shall eat them before the Lord your God in (RO)the place which the Lord your God will choose, you and your son and daughter, and your male and female slaves, and the (RP)Levite who is within your gates; and you shall (RQ)rejoice before the Lord your God in all [hg]your undertakings. 19 (RR)Be careful that you do not abandon the Levite [hh]as long as you live in your land.

20 “When the Lord your God extends your border (RS)as He has [hi]promised you, and you say, ‘I will eat meat,’ because [hj]you desire to eat meat, then you may eat meat, [hk]whatever you desire. 21 If the place where the Lord your God chooses to put His name is too far from you, then you may slaughter animals from your herd and flock which the Lord has given you, as I have commanded you; and you may eat within your gates [hl]whatever you desire. 22 Just as a gazelle or a deer is eaten, so you may eat it; the unclean and the clean alike may eat it. 23 Only be sure (RT)not to eat the blood, for the blood is the [hm]life, and you shall not eat the [hn]life with the flesh. 24 You shall not eat it; you shall pour it out on the ground like water. 25 You shall not eat it, so that (RU)it may go well for you and your sons after you, since (RV)you will be doing what is right in the sight of the Lord. 26 (RW)Only your holy things which you may have and your vowed offerings, you shall take and go to the place which the Lord chooses. 27 And (RX)you shall offer your burnt offerings, the flesh and the blood, on the altar of the Lord your God; and the blood of your sacrifices shall be poured out on the altar of the Lord your God, and (RY)you shall eat the flesh.

28 “Be careful and listen to all these words which I am commanding you, so that (RZ)it may go well for you and your sons after you forever, for you will be doing what is good and right in the sight of the Lord your God.

29 “When (SA)the Lord your God cuts off from you the nations which you are going in to dispossess, and you dispossess them and live in their land, 30 be careful that you are not ensnared [ho]to follow them, after they are destroyed from your presence, and that you do not inquire about their gods, saying, ‘How do these nations serve their gods, that I also may do likewise?’ 31 (SB)You shall not behave this way toward the Lord your God, because every abominable act which the Lord hates, they have done for their gods; for (SC)they even burn their sons and daughters in the fire for their gods.

The Command to Leave Horeb

1 These are the words Moses spoke to all Israel in the wilderness east of the Jordan(A)—that is, in the Arabah(B)—opposite Suph, between Paran(C) and Tophel, Laban, Hazeroth and Dizahab. 2 (It takes eleven days to go from Horeb(D) to Kadesh Barnea(E) by the Mount Seir(F) road.)(G)

3 In the fortieth year,(H) on the first day of the eleventh month,(I) Moses proclaimed(J) to the Israelites all that the Lord had commanded him concerning them. 4 This was after he had defeated Sihon(K) king of the Amorites,(L) who reigned in Heshbon,(M) and at Edrei had defeated Og(N) king of Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth.(O)

5 East of the Jordan in the territory of Moab,(P) Moses began to expound this law, saying:

6 The Lord our God said to us(Q) at Horeb,(R) “You have stayed long enough(S) at this mountain. 7 Break camp and advance into the hill country of the Amorites;(T) go to all the neighboring peoples in the Arabah,(U) in the mountains, in the western foothills, in the Negev(V) and along the coast, to the land of the Canaanites(W) and to Lebanon,(X) as far as the great river, the Euphrates.(Y) 8 See, I have given you this land(Z).(AA) Go in and take possession of the land the Lord swore(AB) he would give to your fathers—to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob—and to their descendants after them.”

The Appointment of Leaders

9 At that time I said to you, “You are too heavy a burden(AC) for me to carry alone.(AD) 10 The Lord your God has increased(AE) your numbers(AF) so that today you are as numerous(AG) as the stars in the sky.(AH) 11 May the Lord, the God of your ancestors, increase(AI) you a thousand times and bless you as he has promised!(AJ) 12 But how can I bear your problems and your burdens and your disputes all by myself?(AK) 13 Choose some wise, understanding and respected men(AL) from each of your tribes, and I will set them over you.”

14 You answered me, “What you propose to do is good.”

15 So I took(AM) the leading men of your tribes,(AN) wise and respected men,(AO) and appointed them to have authority over you—as commanders(AP) of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties and of tens and as tribal officials.(AQ) 16 And I charged your judges at that time, “Hear the disputes between your people and judge(AR) fairly,(AS) whether the case is between two Israelites or between an Israelite and a foreigner residing among you.(AT) 17 Do not show partiality(AU) in judging; hear both small and great alike. Do not be afraid of anyone,(AV) for judgment belongs to God. Bring me any case too hard for you, and I will hear it.”(AW) 18 And at that time I told you everything you were to do.(AX)

Spies Sent Out

19 Then, as the Lord our God commanded us, we set out from Horeb and went toward the hill country of the Amorites(AY) through all that vast and dreadful wilderness(AZ) that you have seen, and so we reached Kadesh Barnea.(BA) 20 Then I said to you, “You have reached the hill country of the Amorites, which the Lord our God is giving us. 21 See, the Lord your God has given you the land. Go up and take possession(BB) of it as the Lord, the God of your ancestors, told you. Do not be afraid;(BC) do not be discouraged.”(BD)

22 Then all of you came to me and said, “Let us send men ahead to spy(BE) out the land(BF) for us and bring back a report about the route we are to take and the towns we will come to.”

23 The idea seemed good to me; so I selected(BG) twelve of you, one man from each tribe. 24 They left and went up into the hill country, and came to the Valley of Eshkol(BH) and explored it. 25 Taking with them some of the fruit of the land, they brought it down to us and reported,(BI) “It is a good land(BJ) that the Lord our God is giving us.”(BK)

Rebellion Against the Lord

26 But you were unwilling to go up;(BL) you rebelled(BM) against the command of the Lord your God. 27 You grumbled(BN) in your tents and said, “The Lord hates us; so he brought us out of Egypt to deliver us into the hands of the Amorites to destroy us. 28 Where can we go? Our brothers have made our hearts melt in fear. They say, ‘The people are stronger and taller(BO) than we are; the cities are large, with walls up to the sky. We even saw the Anakites(BP) there.’”

29 Then I said to you, “Do not be terrified; do not be afraid(BQ) of them.(BR) 30 The Lord your God, who is going before you, will fight(BS) for you, as he did for you in Egypt, before your very eyes, 31 and in the wilderness. There you saw how the Lord your God carried(BT) you, as a father carries his son, all the way you went until you reached this place.”(BU)

32 In spite of this,(BV) you did not trust(BW) in the Lord your God, 33 who went ahead of you on your journey, in fire by night and in a cloud by day,(BX) to search(BY) out places for you to camp and to show you the way you should go.

34 When the Lord heard(BZ) what you said, he was angry(CA) and solemnly swore:(CB) 35 “No one from this evil generation shall see the good land(CC) I swore to give your ancestors, 36 except Caleb(CD) son of Jephunneh. He will see it, and I will give him and his descendants the land he set his feet on, because he followed the Lord wholeheartedly.(CE)”

37 Because of you the Lord became angry(CF) with me also and said, “You shall not enter(CG) it, either. 38 But your assistant, Joshua(CH) son of Nun, will enter it. Encourage(CI) him, because he will lead(CJ) Israel to inherit(CK) it. 39 And the little ones that you said would be taken captive,(CL) your children who do not yet know(CM) good from bad—they will enter the land. I will give it to them and they will take possession of it. 40 But as for you, turn around and set out toward the desert along the route to the Red Sea.[a](CN)”

41 Then you replied, “We have sinned against the Lord. We will go up and fight, as the Lord our God commanded us.” So every one of you put on his weapons, thinking it easy to go up into the hill country.

42 But the Lord said to me, “Tell them, ‘Do not go up and fight, because I will not be with you. You will be defeated by your enemies.’”(CO)

43 So I told you, but you would not listen. You rebelled against the Lord’s command and in your arrogance you marched up into the hill country. 44 The Amorites who lived in those hills came out against you; they chased you like a swarm of bees(CP) and beat you down from Seir(CQ) all the way to Hormah.(CR) 45 You came back and wept before the Lord,(CS) but he paid no attention(CT) to your weeping and turned a deaf ear(CU) to you. 46 And so you stayed in Kadesh(CV) many days—all the time you spent there.

Wanderings in the Wilderness

2 Then we turned back and set out toward the wilderness along the route to the Red Sea,[b](CW) as the Lord had directed me. For a long time we made our way around the hill country of Seir.(CX)

2 Then the Lord said to me, 3 “You have made your way around this hill country long enough;(CY) now turn north. 4 Give the people these orders:(CZ) ‘You are about to pass through the territory of your relatives the descendants of Esau,(DA) who live in Seir.(DB) They will be afraid(DC) of you, but be very careful. 5 Do not provoke them to war, for I will not give you any of their land, not even enough to put your foot on. I have given Esau the hill country of Seir as his own.(DD) 6 You are to pay them in silver for the food you eat and the water you drink.’”

7 The Lord your God has blessed you in all the work of your hands. He has watched(DE) over your journey through this vast wilderness.(DF) These forty years(DG) the Lord your God has been with you, and you have not lacked anything.(DH)

8 So we went on past our relatives the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir. We turned from(DI) the Arabah(DJ) road, which comes up from Elath and Ezion Geber,(DK) and traveled along the desert road of Moab.(DL)

9 Then the Lord said to me, “Do not harass the Moabites or provoke them to war, for I will not give you any part of their land. I have given Ar(DM) to the descendants of Lot(DN) as a possession.”

10 (The Emites(DO) used to live there—a people strong and numerous, and as tall as the Anakites.(DP) 11 Like the Anakites, they too were considered Rephaites,(DQ) but the Moabites called them Emites. 12 Horites(DR) used to live in Seir, but the descendants of Esau drove them out. They destroyed the Horites from before them and settled in their place, just as Israel did(DS) in the land the Lord gave them as their possession.)

13 And the Lord said, “Now get up and cross the Zered Valley.(DT)” So we crossed the valley.

14 Thirty-eight years(DU) passed from the time we left Kadesh Barnea(DV) until we crossed the Zered Valley. By then, that entire generation(DW) of fighting men had perished from the camp, as the Lord had sworn to them.(DX) 15 The Lord’s hand was against them until he had completely eliminated(DY) them from the camp.

16 Now when the last of these fighting men among the people had died, 17 the Lord said to me, 18 “Today you are to pass by the region of Moab at Ar.(DZ) 19 When you come to the Ammonites,(EA) do not harass them or provoke them to war,(EB) for I will not give you possession of any land belonging to the Ammonites. I have given it as a possession to the descendants of Lot.(EC)”

20 (That too was considered a land of the Rephaites,(ED) who used to live there; but the Ammonites called them Zamzummites. 21 They were a people strong and numerous, and as tall as the Anakites.(EE) The Lord destroyed them from before the Ammonites, who drove them out and settled in their place. 22 The Lord had done the same for the descendants of Esau, who lived in Seir,(EF) when he destroyed the Horites from before them. They drove them out and have lived in their place to this day. 23 And as for the Avvites(EG) who lived in villages as far as Gaza,(EH) the Caphtorites(EI) coming out from Caphtor[c](EJ) destroyed them and settled in their place.)

Defeat of Sihon King of Heshbon

24 “Set out now and cross the Arnon Gorge.(EK) See, I have given into your hand Sihon the Amorite,(EL) king of Heshbon, and his country. Begin to take possession of it and engage(EM) him in battle. 25 This very day I will begin to put the terror(EN) and fear(EO) of you on all the nations under heaven. They will hear reports of you and will tremble(EP) and be in anguish because of you.”

26 From the Desert of Kedemoth(EQ) I sent messengers to Sihon(ER) king of Heshbon offering peace(ES) and saying, 27 “Let us pass through your country. We will stay on the main road; we will not turn aside to the right or to the left.(ET) 28 Sell us food to eat(EU) and water to drink for their price in silver. Only let us pass through on foot(EV)— 29 as the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir, and the Moabites, who live in Ar, did for us—until we cross the Jordan into the land the Lord our God is giving us.” 30 But Sihon king of Heshbon refused to let us pass through. For the Lord(EW) your God had made his spirit stubborn(EX) and his heart obstinate(EY) in order to give him into your hands,(EZ) as he has now done.

31 The Lord said to me, “See, I have begun to deliver Sihon and his country over to you. Now begin to conquer and possess his land.”(FA)

32 When Sihon and all his army came out to meet us in battle(FB) at Jahaz, 33 the Lord our God delivered(FC) him over to us and we struck him down,(FD) together with his sons and his whole army. 34 At that time we took all his towns and completely destroyed[d](FE) them—men, women and children. We left no survivors. 35 But the livestock(FF) and the plunder(FG) from the towns we had captured we carried off for ourselves. 36 From Aroer(FH) on the rim of the Arnon Gorge, and from the town in the gorge, even as far as Gilead,(FI) not one town was too strong for us. The Lord our God gave(FJ) us all of them. 37 But in accordance with the command of the Lord our God,(FK) you did not encroach on any of the land of the Ammonites,(FL) neither the land along the course of the Jabbok(FM) nor that around the towns in the hills.

Defeat of Og King of Bashan

3 Next we turned and went up along the road toward Bashan, and Og king of Bashan(FN) with his whole army marched out to meet us in battle at Edrei.(FO) 2 The Lord said to me, “Do not be afraid(FP) of him, for I have delivered him into your hands, along with his whole army and his land. Do to him what you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon.”

3 So the Lord our God also gave into our hands Og king of Bashan and all his army. We struck them down,(FQ) leaving no survivors.(FR) 4 At that time we took all his cities.(FS) There was not one of the sixty cities that we did not take from them—the whole region of Argob, Og’s kingdom(FT) in Bashan.(FU) 5 All these cities were fortified with high walls and with gates and bars, and there were also a great many unwalled villages. 6 We completely destroyed[e] them, as we had done with Sihon king of Heshbon, destroying[f](FV) every city—men, women and children. 7 But all the livestock(FW) and the plunder from their cities we carried off for ourselves.

8 So at that time we took from these two kings of the Amorites(FX) the territory east of the Jordan, from the Arnon Gorge as far as Mount Hermon.(FY) 9 (Hermon is called Sirion(FZ) by the Sidonians; the Amorites call it Senir.)(GA) 10 We took all the towns on the plateau, and all Gilead, and all Bashan as far as Salekah(GB) and Edrei, towns of Og’s kingdom in Bashan. 11 (Og king of Bashan was the last of the Rephaites.(GC) His bed was decorated with iron and was more than nine cubits long and four cubits wide.[g] It is still in Rabbah(GD) of the Ammonites.)

Division of the Land

12 Of the land that we took over at that time, I gave the Reubenites and the Gadites the territory north of Aroer(GE) by the Arnon Gorge, including half the hill country of Gilead, together with its towns. 13 The rest of Gilead and also all of Bashan, the kingdom of Og, I gave to the half-tribe of Manasseh.(GF) (The whole region of Argob in Bashan used to be known as a land of the Rephaites.(GG) 14 Jair,(GH) a descendant of Manasseh, took the whole region of Argob as far as the border of the Geshurites and the Maakathites;(GI) it was named(GJ) after him, so that to this day Bashan is called Havvoth Jair.[h]) 15 And I gave Gilead to Makir.(GK) 16 But to the Reubenites and the Gadites I gave the territory extending from Gilead down to the Arnon Gorge (the middle of the gorge being the border) and out to the Jabbok River,(GL) which is the border of the Ammonites. 17 Its western border was the Jordan in the Arabah,(GM) from Kinnereth(GN) to the Sea of the Arabah(GO) (that is, the Dead Sea(GP)), below the slopes of Pisgah.

18 I commanded you at that time: “The Lord your God has given(GQ) you this land to take possession of it. But all your able-bodied men, armed for battle, must cross over ahead of the other Israelites.(GR) 19 However, your wives,(GS) your children and your livestock(GT) (I know you have much livestock) may stay in the towns I have given you, 20 until the Lord gives rest to your fellow Israelites as he has to you, and they too have taken over the land that the Lord your God is giving them across the Jordan. After that, each of you may go back to the possession I have given you.”

Moses Forbidden to Cross the Jordan

21 At that time I commanded Joshua: “You have seen with your own eyes all that the Lord your God has done to these two kings. The Lord will do the same to all the kingdoms over there where you are going. 22 Do not be afraid(GU) of them;(GV) the Lord your God himself will fight(GW) for you.”

23 At that time I pleaded(GX) with the Lord: 24 “Sovereign Lord, you have begun to show to your servant your greatness(GY) and your strong hand. For what god(GZ) is there in heaven or on earth who can do the deeds and mighty works(HA) you do?(HB) 25 Let me go over and see the good land(HC) beyond the Jordan—that fine hill country and Lebanon.(HD)”

26 But because of you the Lord was angry(HE) with me and would not listen to me. “That is enough,” the Lord said. “Do not speak to me anymore about this matter. 27 Go up to the top of Pisgah(HF) and look west and north and south and east.(HG) Look at the land with your own eyes, since you are not going to cross(HH) this Jordan.(HI) 28 But commission(HJ) Joshua, and encourage(HK) and strengthen him, for he will lead this people across(HL) and will cause them to inherit the land that you will see.” 29 So we stayed in the valley near Beth Peor.(HM)

Obedience Commanded

4 Now, Israel, hear the decrees(HN) and laws I am about to teach(HO) you. Follow them so that you may live(HP) and may go in and take possession of the land the Lord, the God of your ancestors, is giving you. 2 Do not add(HQ) to what I command you and do not subtract(HR) from it, but keep(HS) the commands(HT) of the Lord your God that I give you.

3 You saw with your own eyes what the Lord did at Baal Peor.(HU) The Lord your God destroyed from among you everyone who followed the Baal of Peor, 4 but all of you who held fast to the Lord your God are still alive today.

5 See, I have taught(HV) you decrees and laws(HW) as the Lord my God commanded(HX) me, so that you may follow them in the land you are entering(HY) to take possession of it. 6 Observe(HZ) them carefully, for this will show your wisdom(IA) and understanding to the nations, who will hear about all these decrees and say, “Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.”(IB) 7 What other nation is so great(IC) as to have their gods near(ID) them the way the Lord our God is near us whenever we pray to him? 8 And what other nation is so great as to have such righteous decrees and laws(IE) as this body of laws I am setting before you today?

9 Only be careful,(IF) and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them fade from your heart as long as you live. Teach(IG) them to your children(IH) and to their children after them. 10 Remember the day you stood before the Lord your God at Horeb,(II) when he said to me, “Assemble the people before me to hear my words so that they may learn(IJ) to revere(IK) me as long as they live in the land(IL) and may teach(IM) them to their children.” 11 You came near and stood at the foot of the mountain(IN) while it blazed with fire(IO) to the very heavens, with black clouds and deep darkness.(IP) 12 Then the Lord spoke(IQ) to you out of the fire. You heard the sound of words but saw no form;(IR) there was only a voice.(IS) 13 He declared to you his covenant,(IT) the Ten Commandments,(IU) which he commanded you to follow and then wrote them on two stone tablets. 14 And the Lord directed me at that time to teach you the decrees and laws(IV) you are to follow in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess.

Idolatry Forbidden

15 You saw no form(IW) of any kind the day the Lord spoke to you at Horeb(IX) out of the fire. Therefore watch yourselves very carefully,(IY) 16 so that you do not become corrupt(IZ) and make for yourselves an idol,(JA) an image of any shape, whether formed like a man or a woman, 17 or like any animal on earth or any bird that flies in the air,(JB) 18 or like any creature that moves along the ground or any fish in the waters below. 19 And when you look up to the sky and see the sun,(JC) the moon and the stars(JD)—all the heavenly array(JE)—do not be enticed(JF) into bowing down to them and worshiping(JG) things the Lord your God has apportioned to all the nations under heaven. 20 But as for you, the Lord took you and brought you out of the iron-smelting furnace,(JH) out of Egypt,(JI) to be the people of his inheritance,(JJ) as you now are.

21 The Lord was angry with me(JK) because of you, and he solemnly swore that I would not cross the Jordan and enter the good land the Lord your God is giving you as your inheritance. 22 I will die in this land;(JL) I will not cross the Jordan; but you are about to cross over and take possession of that good land.(JM) 23 Be careful not to forget the covenant(JN) of the Lord your God that he made with you; do not make for yourselves an idol(JO) in the form of anything the Lord your God has forbidden. 24 For the Lord your God is a consuming fire,(JP) a jealous God.(JQ)

25 After you have had children and grandchildren and have lived in the land a long time—if you then become corrupt(JR) and make any kind of idol,(JS) doing evil(JT) in the eyes of the Lord your God and arousing his anger, 26 I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses(JU) against you(JV) this day that you will quickly perish(JW) from the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess. You will not live there long but will certainly be destroyed. 27 The Lord will scatter(JX) you among the peoples, and only a few of you will survive(JY) among the nations to which the Lord will drive you. 28 There you will worship man-made gods(JZ) of wood and stone,(KA) which cannot see or hear or eat or smell.(KB) 29 But if from there you seek(KC) the Lord your God, you will find him if you seek him with all your heart(KD) and with all your soul.(KE) 30 When you are in distress(KF) and all these things have happened to you, then in later days(KG) you will return(KH) to the Lord your God and obey him. 31 For the Lord your God is a merciful(KI) God; he will not abandon(KJ) or destroy(KK) you or forget(KL) the covenant with your ancestors, which he confirmed to them by oath.

The Lord Is God

32 Ask(KM) now about the former days, long before your time, from the day God created human beings on the earth;(KN) ask from one end of the heavens to the other.(KO) Has anything so great(KP) as this ever happened, or has anything like it ever been heard of? 33 Has any other people heard the voice of God[i] speaking out of fire, as you have, and lived?(KQ) 34 Has any god ever tried to take for himself one nation out of another nation,(KR) by testings,(KS) by signs(KT) and wonders,(KU) by war, by a mighty hand and an outstretched arm,(KV) or by great and awesome deeds,(KW) like all the things the Lord your God did for you in Egypt before your very eyes?

35 You were shown these things so that you might know that the Lord is God; besides him there is no other.(KX) 36 From heaven he made you hear his voice(KY) to discipline(KZ) you. On earth he showed you his great fire, and you heard his words from out of the fire. 37 Because he loved(LA) your ancestors and chose their descendants after them, he brought you out of Egypt by his Presence and his great strength,(LB) 38 to drive out before you nations greater and stronger than you and to bring you into their land to give it to you for your inheritance,(LC) as it is today.

39 Acknowledge(LD) and take to heart this day that the Lord is God in heaven above and on the earth below. There is no other.(LE) 40 Keep(LF) his decrees and commands,(LG) which I am giving you today, so that it may go well(LH) with you and your children after you and that you may live long(LI) in the land the Lord your God gives you for all time.

Cities of Refuge(LJ)

41 Then Moses set aside three cities east of the Jordan, 42 to which anyone who had killed a person could flee if they had unintentionally(LK) killed a neighbor without malice aforethought. They could flee into one of these cities and save their life. 43 The cities were these: Bezer in the wilderness plateau, for the Reubenites; Ramoth(LL) in Gilead, for the Gadites; and Golan in Bashan, for the Manassites.

Introduction to the Law

44 This is the law Moses set before the Israelites. 45 These are the stipulations, decrees and laws Moses gave them when they came out of Egypt 46 and were in the valley near Beth Peor east of the Jordan, in the land of Sihon(LM) king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon and was defeated by Moses and the Israelites as they came out of Egypt. 47 They took possession of his land and the land of Og king of Bashan, the two Amorite kings east of the Jordan. 48 This land extended from Aroer(LN) on the rim of the Arnon Gorge to Mount Sirion[j](LO) (that is, Hermon(LP)), 49 and included all the Arabah east of the Jordan, as far as the Dead Sea,[k] below the slopes of Pisgah.

The Ten Commandments(LQ)

5 Moses summoned all Israel and said:

Hear, Israel, the decrees and laws(LR) I declare in your hearing today. Learn them and be sure to follow them. 2 The Lord our God made a covenant(LS) with us at Horeb.(LT) 3 It was not with our ancestors[l] that the Lord made this covenant, but with us,(LU) with all of us who are alive here today.(LV) 4 The Lord spoke(LW) to you face to face(LX) out of the fire(LY) on the mountain. 5 (At that time I stood between(LZ) the Lord and you to declare to you the word of the Lord, because you were afraid(MA) of the fire and did not go up the mountain.) And he said:

6 “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt,(MB) out of the land of slavery.(MC)

7 “You shall have no other gods before[m] me.

8 “You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below.(MD) 9 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents(ME) to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me,(MF) 10 but showing love to a thousand(MG) generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.(MH)

11 “You shall not misuse the name(MI) of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.(MJ)

12 “Observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy,(MK) as the Lord your God has commanded you. 13 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 14 but the seventh day(ML) is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant,(MM) nor your ox, your donkey or any of your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns, so that your male and female servants may rest, as you do.(MN) 15 Remember that you were slaves(MO) in Egypt and that the Lord your God brought you out of there with a mighty hand(MP) and an outstretched arm.(MQ) Therefore the Lord your God has commanded you to observe the Sabbath day.

16 “Honor your father(MR) and your mother,(MS) as the Lord your God has commanded you, so that you may live long(MT) and that it may go well with you in the land the Lord your God is giving you.

17 “You shall not murder.(MU)

18 “You shall not commit adultery.(MV)

19 “You shall not steal.(MW)

20 “You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.(MX)

21 “You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife. You shall not set your desire on your neighbor’s house or land, his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”(MY)

22 These are the commandments the Lord proclaimed in a loud voice to your whole assembly there on the mountain from out of the fire, the cloud and the deep darkness;(MZ) and he added nothing more. Then he wrote them on two stone tablets(NA) and gave them to me.

23 When you heard the voice out of the darkness, while the mountain was ablaze with fire, all the leaders of your tribes and your elders(NB) came to me. 24 And you said, “The Lord our God has shown us(NC) his glory and his majesty,(ND) and we have heard his voice from the fire. Today we have seen that a person can live even if God speaks with them.(NE) 25 But now, why should we die? This great fire will consume us, and we will die if we hear the voice of the Lord our God any longer.(NF) 26 For what mortal has ever heard the voice of the living God speaking out of fire, as we have, and survived?(NG) 27 Go near and listen to all that the Lord our God says.(NH) Then tell us whatever the Lord our God tells you. We will listen and obey.”(NI)

28 The Lord heard you when you spoke to me, and the Lord said to me, “I have heard what this people said to you. Everything they said was good.(NJ) 29 Oh, that their hearts would be inclined to fear me(NK) and keep all my commands(NL) always, so that it might go well with them and their children forever!(NM)

30 “Go, tell them to return to their tents. 31 But you stay here(NN) with me so that I may give you all the commands, decrees and laws you are to teach them to follow in the land I am giving them to possess.”

32 So be careful to do what the Lord your God has commanded you;(NO) do not turn aside to the right or to the left.(NP) 33 Walk in obedience to all that the Lord your God has commanded you,(NQ) so that you may live and prosper and prolong your days(NR) in the land that you will possess.

Love the Lord Your God

6 These are the commands, decrees and laws the Lord your God directed me to teach you to observe in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess, 2 so that you, your children and their children after them may fear(NS) the Lord your God as long as you live(NT) by keeping all his decrees and commands(NU) that I give you, and so that you may enjoy long life.(NV) 3 Hear, Israel, and be careful to obey(NW) so that it may go well with you and that you may increase greatly(NX) in a land flowing with milk and honey,(NY) just as the Lord, the God of your ancestors, promised(NZ) you.

4 Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.[n](OA) 5 Love(OB) the Lord your God with all your heart(OC) and with all your soul and with all your strength.(OD) 6 These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts.(OE) 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.(OF) 8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.(OG) 9 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.(OH)

10 When the Lord your God brings you into the land he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, to give you—a land with large, flourishing cities you did not build,(OI) 11 houses filled with all kinds of good things you did not provide, wells you did not dig,(OJ) and vineyards and olive groves you did not plant—then when you eat and are satisfied,(OK) 12 be careful that you do not forget(OL) the Lord, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.

13 Fear the Lord(OM) your God, serve him only(ON) and take your oaths(OO) in his name.(OP) 14 Do not follow other gods, the gods of the peoples around you; 15 for the Lord your God(OQ), who is among you, is a jealous God and his anger will burn against you, and he will destroy you from the face of the land. 16 Do not put the Lord your God to the test(OR) as you did at Massah. 17 Be sure to keep(OS) the commands of the Lord your God and the stipulations and decrees he has given you.(OT) 18 Do what is right and good in the Lord’s sight,(OU) so that it may go well(OV) with you and you may go in and take over the good land the Lord promised on oath to your ancestors, 19 thrusting out all your enemies(OW) before you, as the Lord said.

20 In the future, when your son asks you,(OX) “What is the meaning of the stipulations, decrees and laws the Lord our God has commanded you?” 21 tell him: “We were slaves of Pharaoh in Egypt, but the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand.(OY) 22 Before our eyes the Lord sent signs and wonders—great and terrible—on Egypt and Pharaoh and his whole household. 23 But he brought us out from there to bring us in and give us the land he promised on oath to our ancestors. 24 The Lord commanded us to obey all these decrees and to fear the Lord our God,(OZ) so that we might always prosper and be kept alive, as is the case today.(PA) 25 And if we are careful to obey all this law(PB) before the Lord our God, as he has commanded us, that will be our righteousness.(PC)”

Driving Out the Nations

7 When the Lord your God brings you into the land you are entering to possess(PD) and drives out before you many nations(PE)—the Hittites,(PF) Girgashites,(PG) Amorites,(PH) Canaanites, Perizzites,(PI) Hivites(PJ) and Jebusites,(PK) seven nations larger and stronger than you— 2 and when the Lord your God has delivered(PL) them over to you and you have defeated them, then you must destroy(PM) them totally.[o](PN) Make no treaty(PO) with them, and show them no mercy.(PP) 3 Do not intermarry with them.(PQ) Do not give your daughters to their sons or take their daughters for your sons, 4 for they will turn your children away from following me to serve other gods,(PR) and the Lord’s anger will burn against you and will quickly destroy(PS) you. 5 This is what you are to do to them: Break down their altars, smash their sacred stones, cut down their Asherah poles[p](PT) and burn their idols in the fire.(PU) 6 For you are a people holy(PV) to the Lord your God.(PW) The Lord your God has chosen(PX) you out of all the peoples on the face of the earth to be his people, his treasured possession.(PY)

7 The Lord did not set his affection on you and choose you because you were more numerous(PZ) than other peoples, for you were the fewest(QA) of all peoples.(QB) 8 But it was because the Lord loved(QC) you and kept the oath he swore(QD) to your ancestors that he brought you out with a mighty hand(QE) and redeemed(QF) you from the land of slavery,(QG) from the power of Pharaoh king of Egypt. 9 Know therefore that the Lord your God is God;(QH) he is the faithful God,(QI) keeping his covenant of love(QJ) to a thousand generations(QK) of those who love him and keep his commandments.(QL) 10 But

those who hate him he will repay to their face by destruction;
    he will not be slow to repay to their face those who hate him.(QM)

11 Therefore, take care to follow the commands, decrees and laws I give you today.

12 If you pay attention to these laws and are careful to follow them, then the Lord your God will keep his covenant of love with you, as he swore to your ancestors.(QN) 13 He will love you and bless you(QO) and increase your numbers.(QP) He will bless the fruit of your womb,(QQ) the crops of your land—your grain, new wine(QR) and olive oil(QS)—the calves of your herds and the lambs of your flocks in the land he swore to your ancestors to give you.(QT) 14 You will be blessed more than any other people; none of your men or women will be childless, nor will any of your livestock be without young.(QU) 15 The Lord will keep you free from every disease.(QV) He will not inflict on you the horrible diseases you knew in Egypt,(QW) but he will inflict them on all who hate you.(QX) 16 You must destroy all the peoples the Lord your God gives over to you.(QY) Do not look on them with pity(QZ) and do not serve their gods,(RA) for that will be a snare(RB) to you.

17 You may say to yourselves, “These nations are stronger than we are. How can we drive them out?(RC)” 18 But do not be afraid(RD) of them; remember well what the Lord your God did to Pharaoh and to all Egypt.(RE) 19 You saw with your own eyes the great trials, the signs and wonders, the mighty hand(RF) and outstretched arm, with which the Lord your God brought you out. The Lord your God will do the same to all the peoples you now fear.(RG) 20 Moreover, the Lord your God will send the hornet(RH) among them until even the survivors who hide from you have perished. 21 Do not be terrified by them, for the Lord your God, who is among you,(RI) is a great and awesome God.(RJ) 22 The Lord your God will drive out those nations before you, little by little.(RK) You will not be allowed to eliminate them all at once, or the wild animals will multiply around you. 23 But the Lord your God will deliver them over to you, throwing them into great confusion until they are destroyed.(RL) 24 He will give their kings(RM) into your hand,(RN) and you will wipe out their names from under heaven. No one will be able to stand up against you;(RO) you will destroy them.(RP) 25 The images of their gods you are to burn(RQ) in the fire. Do not covet(RR) the silver and gold on them, and do not take it for yourselves, or you will be ensnared(RS) by it, for it is detestable(RT) to the Lord your God. 26 Do not bring a detestable thing into your house or you, like it, will be set apart for destruction.(RU) Regard it as vile and utterly detest it, for it is set apart for destruction.

Do Not Forget the Lord

8 Be careful to follow every command I am giving you today, so that you may live(RV) and increase and may enter and possess the land the Lord promised on oath to your ancestors.(RW) 2 Remember how the Lord your God led(RX) you all the way in the wilderness these forty years, to humble and test(RY) you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands. 3 He humbled(RZ) you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna,(SA) which neither you nor your ancestors had known, to teach(SB) you that man does not live on bread(SC) alone but on every word that comes from the mouth(SD) of the Lord.(SE) 4 Your clothes did not wear out and your feet did not swell during these forty years.(SF) 5 Know then in your heart that as a man disciplines his son, so the Lord your God disciplines you.(SG)

1 These be the words which Moses spake unto all Israel on this side Jordan in the wilderness, in the plain over against the Red sea, between Paran, and Tophel, and Laban, and Hazeroth, and Dizahab.

2 (There are eleven days' journey from Horeb by the way of mount Seir unto Kadeshbarnea.)

3 And it came to pass in the fortieth year, in the eleventh month, on the first day of the month, that Moses spake unto the children of Israel, according unto all that the Lord had given him in commandment unto them;

4 After he had slain Sihon the king of the Amorites, which dwelt in Heshbon, and Og the king of Bashan, which dwelt at Astaroth in Edrei:

5 On this side Jordan, in the land of Moab, began Moses to declare this law, saying,

6 The Lord our God spake unto us in Horeb, saying, Ye have dwelt long enough in this mount:

7 Turn you, and take your journey, and go to the mount of the Amorites, and unto all the places nigh thereunto, in the plain, in the hills, and in the vale, and in the south, and by the sea side, to the land of the Canaanites, and unto Lebanon, unto the great river, the river Euphrates.

8 Behold, I have set the land before you: go in and possess the land which the Lord sware unto your fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give unto them and to their seed after them.

9 And I spake unto you at that time, saying, I am not able to bear you myself alone:

10 The Lord your God hath multiplied you, and, behold, ye are this day as the stars of heaven for multitude.

11 (The Lord God of your fathers make you a thousand times so many more as ye are, and bless you, as he hath promised you!)

12 How can I myself alone bear your cumbrance, and your burden, and your strife?

13 Take you wise men, and understanding, and known among your tribes, and I will make them rulers over you.

14 And ye answered me, and said, The thing which thou hast spoken is good for us to do.

15 So I took the chief of your tribes, wise men, and known, and made them heads over you, captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, and captains over fifties, and captains over tens, and officers among your tribes.

16 And I charged your judges at that time, saying, Hear the causes between your brethren, and judge righteously between every man and his brother, and the stranger that is with him.

17 Ye shall not respect persons in judgment; but ye shall hear the small as well as the great; ye shall not be afraid of the face of man; for the judgment is God's: and the cause that is too hard for you, bring it unto me, and I will hear it.

18 And I commanded you at that time all the things which ye should do.

19 And when we departed from Horeb, we went through all that great and terrible wilderness, which ye saw by the way of the mountain of the Amorites, as the Lord our God commanded us; and we came to Kadeshbarnea.

20 And I said unto you, Ye are come unto the mountain of the Amorites, which the Lord our God doth give unto us.

21 Behold, the Lord thy God hath set the land before thee: go up and possess it, as the Lord God of thy fathers hath said unto thee; fear not, neither be discouraged.

22 And ye came near unto me every one of you, and said, We will send men before us, and they shall search us out the land, and bring us word again by what way we must go up, and into what cities we shall come.

23 And the saying pleased me well: and I took twelve men of you, one of a tribe:

24 And they turned and went up into the mountain, and came unto the valley of Eshcol, and searched it out.

25 And they took of the fruit of the land in their hands, and brought it down unto us, and brought us word again, and said, It is a good land which the Lord our God doth give us.

26 Notwithstanding ye would not go up, but rebelled against the commandment of the Lord your God:

27 And ye murmured in your tents, and said, Because the Lord hated us, he hath brought us forth out of the land of Egypt, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us.

28 Whither shall we go up? our brethren have discouraged our heart, saying, The people is greater and taller than we; the cities are great and walled up to heaven; and moreover we have seen the sons of the Anakims there.

29 Then I said unto you, Dread not, neither be afraid of them.

30 The Lord your God which goeth before you, he shall fight for you, according to all that he did for you in Egypt before your eyes;

31 And in the wilderness, where thou hast seen how that the Lord thy God bare thee, as a man doth bear his son, in all the way that ye went, until ye came into this place.

32 Yet in this thing ye did not believe the Lord your God,

33 Who went in the way before you, to search you out a place to pitch your tents in, in fire by night, to shew you by what way ye should go, and in a cloud by day.

34 And the Lord heard the voice of your words, and was wroth, and sware, saying,

35 Surely there shall not one of these men of this evil generation see that good land, which I sware to give unto your fathers.

36 Save Caleb the son of Jephunneh; he shall see it, and to him will I give the land that he hath trodden upon, and to his children, because he hath wholly followed the Lord.

37 Also the Lord was angry with me for your sakes, saying, Thou also shalt not go in thither.

38 But Joshua the son of Nun, which standeth before thee, he shall go in thither: encourage him: for he shall cause Israel to inherit it.

39 Moreover your little ones, which ye said should be a prey, and your children, which in that day had no knowledge between good and evil, they shall go in thither, and unto them will I give it, and they shall possess it.

40 But as for you, turn you, and take your journey into the wilderness by the way of the Red sea.

41 Then ye answered and said unto me, We have sinned against the Lord, we will go up and fight, according to all that the Lord our God commanded us. And when ye had girded on every man his weapons of war, ye were ready to go up into the hill.

42 And the Lord said unto me, Say unto them. Go not up, neither fight; for I am not among you; lest ye be smitten before your enemies.

43 So I spake unto you; and ye would not hear, but rebelled against the commandment of the Lord, and went presumptuously up into the hill.

44 And the Amorites, which dwelt in that mountain, came out against you, and chased you, as bees do, and destroyed you in Seir, even unto Hormah.

45 And ye returned and wept before the Lord; but the Lord would not hearken to your voice, nor give ear unto you.

46 So ye abode in Kadesh many days, according unto the days that ye abode there.

2 Then we turned, and took our journey into the wilderness by the way of the Red sea, as the Lord spake unto me: and we compassed mount Seir many days.

2 And the Lord spake unto me, saying,

3 Ye have compassed this mountain long enough: turn you northward.

4 And command thou the people, saying, Ye are to pass through the coast of your brethren the children of Esau, which dwell in Seir; and they shall be afraid of you: take ye good heed unto yourselves therefore:

5 Meddle not with them; for I will not give you of their land, no, not so much as a foot breadth; because I have given mount Seir unto Esau for a possession.

6 Ye shall buy meat of them for money, that ye may eat; and ye shall also buy water of them for money, that ye may drink.

7 For the Lord thy God hath blessed thee in all the works of thy hand: he knoweth thy walking through this great wilderness: these forty years the Lord thy God hath been with thee; thou hast lacked nothing.

8 And when we passed by from our brethren the children of Esau, which dwelt in Seir, through the way of the plain from Elath, and from Eziongaber, we turned and passed by the way of the wilderness of Moab.

9 And the Lord said unto me, Distress not the Moabites, neither contend with them in battle: for I will not give thee of their land for a possession; because I have given Ar unto the children of Lot for a possession.

10 The Emims dwelt therein in times past, a people great, and many, and tall, as the Anakims;

11 Which also were accounted giants, as the Anakims; but the Moabites called them Emims.

12 The Horims also dwelt in Seir beforetime; but the children of Esau succeeded them, when they had destroyed them from before them, and dwelt in their stead; as Israel did unto the land of his possession, which the Lord gave unto them.

13 Now rise up, said I, and get you over the brook Zered. And we went over the brook Zered.

14 And the space in which we came from Kadeshbarnea, until we were come over the brook Zered, was thirty and eight years; until all the generation of the men of war were wasted out from among the host, as the Lord sware unto them.

15 For indeed the hand of the Lord was against them, to destroy them from among the host, until they were consumed.

16 So it came to pass, when all the men of war were consumed and dead from among the people,

17 That the Lord spake unto me, saying,

18 Thou art to pass over through Ar, the coast of Moab, this day:

19 And when thou comest nigh over against the children of Ammon, distress them not, nor meddle with them: for I will not give thee of the land of the children of Ammon any possession; because I have given it unto the children of Lot for a possession.

20 (That also was accounted a land of giants: giants dwelt therein in old time; and the Ammonites call them Zamzummims;

21 A people great, and many, and tall, as the Anakims; but the Lord destroyed them before them; and they succeeded them, and dwelt in their stead:

22 As he did to the children of Esau, which dwelt in Seir, when he destroyed the Horims from before them; and they succeeded them, and dwelt in their stead even unto this day:

23 And the Avims which dwelt in Hazerim, even unto Azzah, the Caphtorims, which came forth out of Caphtor, destroyed them, and dwelt in their stead.)

24 Rise ye up, take your journey, and pass over the river Arnon: behold, I have given into thine hand Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land: begin to possess it, and contend with him in battle.

25 This day will I begin to put the dread of thee and the fear of thee upon the nations that are under the whole heaven, who shall hear report of thee, and shall tremble, and be in anguish because of thee.

26 And I sent messengers out of the wilderness of Kedemoth unto Sihon king of Heshbon with words of peace, saying,

27 Let me pass through thy land: I will go along by the high way, I will neither turn unto the right hand nor to the left.

28 Thou shalt sell me meat for money, that I may eat; and give me water for money, that I may drink: only I will pass through on my feet;

29 (As the children of Esau which dwell in Seir, and the Moabites which dwell in Ar, did unto me;) until I shall pass over Jordan into the land which the Lord our God giveth us.

30 But Sihon king of Heshbon would not let us pass by him: for the Lord thy God hardened his spirit, and made his heart obstinate, that he might deliver him into thy hand, as appeareth this day.

31 And the Lord said unto me, Behold, I have begun to give Sihon and his land before thee: begin to possess, that thou mayest inherit his land.

32 Then Sihon came out against us, he and all his people, to fight at Jahaz.

33 And the Lord our God delivered him before us; and we smote him, and his sons, and all his people.

34 And we took all his cities at that time, and utterly destroyed the men, and the women, and the little ones, of every city, we left none to remain:

35 Only the cattle we took for a prey unto ourselves, and the spoil of the cities which we took.

36 From Aroer, which is by the brink of the river of Arnon, and from the city that is by the river, even unto Gilead, there was not one city too strong for us: the Lord our God delivered all unto us:

37 Only unto the land of the children of Ammon thou camest not, nor unto any place of the river Jabbok, nor unto the cities in the mountains, nor unto whatsoever the Lord our God forbad us.

3 Then we turned, and went up the way to Bashan: and Og the king of Bashan came out against us, he and all his people, to battle at Edrei.

2 And the Lord said unto me, Fear him not: for I will deliver him, and all his people, and his land, into thy hand; and thou shalt do unto him as thou didst unto Sihon king of the Amorites, which dwelt at Heshbon.

3 So the Lord our God delivered into our hands Og also, the king of Bashan, and all his people: and we smote him until none was left to him remaining.

4 And we took all his cities at that time, there was not a city which we took not from them, threescore cities, all the region of Argob, the kingdom of Og in Bashan.

5 All these cities were fenced with high walls, gates, and bars; beside unwalled towns a great many.

6 And we utterly destroyed them, as we did unto Sihon king of Heshbon, utterly destroying the men, women, and children, of every city.

7 But all the cattle, and the spoil of the cities, we took for a prey to ourselves.

8 And we took at that time out of the hand of the two kings of the Amorites the land that was on this side Jordan, from the river of Arnon unto mount Hermon;

9 (Which Hermon the Sidonians call Sirion; and the Amorites call it Shenir;)

10 All the cities of the plain, and all Gilead, and all Bashan, unto Salchah and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan.

11 For only Og king of Bashan remained of the remnant of giants; behold his bedstead was a bedstead of iron; is it not in Rabbath of the children of Ammon? nine cubits was the length thereof, and four cubits the breadth of it, after the cubit of a man.

12 And this land, which we possessed at that time, from Aroer, which is by the river Arnon, and half mount Gilead, and the cities thereof, gave I unto the Reubenites and to the Gadites.

13 And the rest of Gilead, and all Bashan, being the kingdom of Og, gave I unto the half tribe of Manasseh; all the region of Argob, with all Bashan, which was called the land of giants.

14 Jair the son of Manasseh took all the country of Argob unto the coasts of Geshuri and Maachathi; and called them after his own name, Bashanhavothjair, unto this day.

15 And I gave Gilead unto Machir.

16 And unto the Reubenites and unto the Gadites I gave from Gilead even unto the river Arnon half the valley, and the border even unto the river Jabbok, which is the border of the children of Ammon;

17 The plain also, and Jordan, and the coast thereof, from Chinnereth even unto the sea of the plain, even the salt sea, under Ashdothpisgah eastward.

18 And I commanded you at that time, saying, The Lord your God hath given you this land to possess it: ye shall pass over armed before your brethren the children of Israel, all that are meet for the war.

19 But your wives, and your little ones, and your cattle, (for I know that ye have much cattle,) shall abide in your cities which I have given you;

20 Until the Lord have given rest unto your brethren, as well as unto you, and until they also possess the land which the Lord your God hath given them beyond Jordan: and then shall ye return every man unto his possession, which I have given you.

21 And I commanded Joshua at that time, saying, Thine eyes have seen all that the Lord your God hath done unto these two kings: so shall the Lord do unto all the kingdoms whither thou passest.

22 Ye shall not fear them: for the Lord your God he shall fight for you.

23 And I besought the Lord at that time, saying,

24 O Lord God, thou hast begun to shew thy servant thy greatness, and thy mighty hand: for what God is there in heaven or in earth, that can do according to thy works, and according to thy might?

25 I pray thee, let me go over, and see the good land that is beyond Jordan, that goodly mountain, and Lebanon.

26 But the Lord was wroth with me for your sakes, and would not hear me: and the Lord said unto me, Let it suffice thee; speak no more unto me of this matter.

27 Get thee up into the top of Pisgah, and lift up thine eyes westward, and northward, and southward, and eastward, and behold it with thine eyes: for thou shalt not go over this Jordan.

28 But charge Joshua, and encourage him, and strengthen him: for he shall go over before this people, and he shall cause them to inherit the land which thou shalt see.

29 So we abode in the valley over against Bethpeor.

4 Now therefore hearken, O Israel, unto the statutes and unto the judgments, which I teach you, for to do them, that ye may live, and go in and possess the land which the Lord God of your fathers giveth you.

2 Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the Lord your God which I command you.

3 Your eyes have seen what the Lord did because of Baalpeor: for all the men that followed Baalpeor, the Lord thy God hath destroyed them from among you.

4 But ye that did cleave unto the Lord your God are alive every one of you this day.

5 Behold, I have taught you statutes and judgments, even as the Lord my God commanded me, that ye should do so in the land whither ye go to possess it.

6 Keep therefore and do them; for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the nations, which shall hear all these statutes, and say, Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.

7 For what nation is there so great, who hath God so nigh unto them, as the Lord our God is in all things that we call upon him for?

8 And what nation is there so great, that hath statutes and judgments so righteous as all this law, which I set before you this day?

9 Only take heed to thyself, and keep thy soul diligently, lest thou forget the things which thine eyes have seen, and lest they depart from thy heart all the days of thy life: but teach them thy sons, and thy sons' sons;

10 Specially the day that thou stoodest before the Lord thy God in Horeb, when the Lord said unto me, Gather me the people together, and I will make them hear my words, that they may learn to fear me all the days that they shall live upon the earth, and that they may teach their children.

11 And ye came near and stood under the mountain; and the mountain burned with fire unto the midst of heaven, with darkness, clouds, and thick darkness.

12 And the Lord spake unto you out of the midst of the fire: ye heard the voice of the words, but saw no similitude; only ye heard a voice.

13 And he declared unto you his covenant, which he commanded you to perform, even ten commandments; and he wrote them upon two tables of stone.

14 And the Lord commanded me at that time to teach you statutes and judgments, that ye might do them in the land whither ye go over to possess it.

15 Take ye therefore good heed unto yourselves; for ye saw no manner of similitude on the day that the Lord spake unto you in Horeb out of the midst of the fire:

16 Lest ye corrupt yourselves, and make you a graven image, the similitude of any figure, the likeness of male or female,

17 The likeness of any beast that is on the earth, the likeness of any winged fowl that flieth in the air,

18 The likeness of any thing that creepeth on the ground, the likeness of any fish that is in the waters beneath the earth:

19 And lest thou lift up thine eyes unto heaven, and when thou seest the sun, and the moon, and the stars, even all the host of heaven, shouldest be driven to worship them, and serve them, which the Lord thy God hath divided unto all nations under the whole heaven.

20 But the Lord hath taken you, and brought you forth out of the iron furnace, even out of Egypt, to be unto him a people of inheritance, as ye are this day.

21 Furthermore the Lord was angry with me for your sakes, and sware that I should not go over Jordan, and that I should not go in unto that good land, which the Lord thy God giveth thee for an inheritance:

22 But I must die in this land, I must not go over Jordan: but ye shall go over, and possess that good land.

23 Take heed unto yourselves, lest ye forget the covenant of the Lord your God, which he made with you, and make you a graven image, or the likeness of any thing, which the Lord thy God hath forbidden thee.

24 For the Lord thy God is a consuming fire, even a jealous God.

25 When thou shalt beget children, and children's children, and ye shall have remained long in the land, and shall corrupt yourselves, and make a graven image, or the likeness of any thing, and shall do evil in the sight of the Lord thy God, to provoke him to anger:

26 I call heaven and earth to witness against you this day, that ye shall soon utterly perish from off the land whereunto ye go over Jordan to possess it; ye shall not prolong your days upon it, but shall utterly be destroyed.

27 And the Lord shall scatter you among the nations, and ye shall be left few in number among the heathen, whither the Lord shall lead you.

28 And there ye shall serve gods, the work of men's hands, wood and stone, which neither see, nor hear, nor eat, nor smell.

29 But if from thence thou shalt seek the Lord thy God, thou shalt find him, if thou seek him with all thy heart and with all thy soul.

30 When thou art in tribulation, and all these things are come upon thee, even in the latter days, if thou turn to the Lord thy God, and shalt be obedient unto his voice;

31 (For the Lord thy God is a merciful God;) he will not forsake thee, neither destroy thee, nor forget the covenant of thy fathers which he sware unto them.

32 For ask now of the days that are past, which were before thee, since the day that God created man upon the earth, and ask from the one side of heaven unto the other, whether there hath been any such thing as this great thing is, or hath been heard like it?

33 Did ever people hear the voice of God speaking out of the midst of the fire, as thou hast heard, and live?

34 Or hath God assayed to go and take him a nation from the midst of another nation, by temptations, by signs, and by wonders, and by war, and by a mighty hand, and by a stretched out arm, and by great terrors, according to all that the Lord your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes?

35 Unto thee it was shewed, that thou mightest know that the Lord he is God; there is none else beside him.

36 Out of heaven he made thee to hear his voice, that he might instruct thee: and upon earth he shewed thee his great fire; and thou heardest his words out of the midst of the fire.

37 And because he loved thy fathers, therefore he chose their seed after them, and brought thee out in his sight with his mighty power out of Egypt;

38 To drive out nations from before thee greater and mightier than thou art, to bring thee in, to give thee their land for an inheritance, as it is this day.

39 Know therefore this day, and consider it in thine heart, that the Lord he is God in heaven above, and upon the earth beneath: there is none else.

40 Thou shalt keep therefore his statutes, and his commandments, which I command thee this day, that it may go well with thee, and with thy children after thee, and that thou mayest prolong thy days upon the earth, which the Lord thy God giveth thee, for ever.

41 Then Moses severed three cities on this side Jordan toward the sunrising;

42 That the slayer might flee thither, which should kill his neighbour unawares, and hated him not in times past; and that fleeing unto one of these cities he might live:

43 Namely, Bezer in the wilderness, in the plain country, of the Reubenites; and Ramoth in Gilead, of the Gadites; and Golan in Bashan, of the Manassites.

44 And this is the law which Moses set before the children of Israel:

45 These are the testimonies, and the statutes, and the judgments, which Moses spake unto the children of Israel, after they came forth out of Egypt.

46 On this side Jordan, in the valley over against Bethpeor, in the land of Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt at Heshbon, whom Moses and the children of Israel smote, after they were come forth out of Egypt:

47 And they possessed his land, and the land of Og king of Bashan, two kings of the Amorites, which were on this side Jordan toward the sunrising;

48 From Aroer, which is by the bank of the river Arnon, even unto mount Sion, which is Hermon,

49 And all the plain on this side Jordan eastward, even unto the sea of the plain, under the springs of Pisgah.

5 And Moses called all Israel, and said unto them, Hear, O Israel, the statutes and judgments which I speak in your ears this day, that ye may learn them, and keep, and do them.

2 The Lord our God made a covenant with us in Horeb.

3 The Lord made not this covenant with our fathers, but with us, even us, who are all of us here alive this day.

4 The Lord talked with you face to face in the mount out of the midst of the fire,

5 (I stood between the Lord and you at that time, to shew you the word of the Lord: for ye were afraid by reason of the fire, and went not up into the mount;) saying,

6 I am the Lord thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.

7 Thou shalt have none other gods before me.

8 Thou shalt not make thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the waters beneath the earth:

9 Thou shalt not bow down thyself unto them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me,

10 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me and keep my commandments.

11 Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain: for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

12 Keep the sabbath day to sanctify it, as the Lord thy God hath commanded thee.

13 Six days thou shalt labour, and do all thy work:

14 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, nor thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thine ox, nor thine ass, nor any of thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates; that thy manservant and thy maidservant may rest as well as thou.

15 And remember that thou wast a servant in the land of Egypt, and that the Lord thy God brought thee out thence through a mighty hand and by a stretched out arm: therefore the Lord thy God commanded thee to keep the sabbath day.

16 Honour thy father and thy mother, as the Lord thy God hath commanded thee; that thy days may be prolonged, and that it may go well with thee, in the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.

17 Thou shalt not kill.

18 Neither shalt thou commit adultery.

19 Neither shalt thou steal.

20 Neither shalt thou bear false witness against thy neighbour.

21 Neither shalt thou desire thy neighbour's wife, neither shalt thou covet thy neighbour's house, his field, or his manservant, or his maidservant, his ox, or his ass, or any thing that is thy neighbour's.

22 These words the Lord spake unto all your assembly in the mount out of the midst of the fire, of the cloud, and of the thick darkness, with a great voice: and he added no more. And he wrote them in two tables of stone, and delivered them unto me.

23 And it came to pass, when ye heard the voice out of the midst of the darkness, (for the mountain did burn with fire,) that ye came near unto me, even all the heads of your tribes, and your elders;

24 And ye said, Behold, the Lord our God hath shewed us his glory and his greatness, and we have heard his voice out of the midst of the fire: we have seen this day that God doth talk with man, and he liveth.

25 Now therefore why should we die? for this great fire will consume us: if we hear the voice of the Lord our God any more, then we shall die.

26 For who is there of all flesh, that hath heard the voice of the living God speaking out of the midst of the fire, as we have, and lived?

27 Go thou near, and hear all that the Lord our God shall say: and speak thou unto us all that the Lord our God shall speak unto thee; and we will hear it, and do it.

28 And the Lord heard the voice of your words, when ye spake unto me; and the Lord said unto me, I have heard the voice of the words of this people, which they have spoken unto thee: they have well said all that they have spoken.

29 O that there were such an heart in them, that they would fear me, and keep all my commandments always, that it might be well with them, and with their children for ever!

30 Go say to them, Get you into your tents again.

31 But as for thee, stand thou here by me, and I will speak unto thee all the commandments, and the statutes, and the judgments, which thou shalt teach them, that they may do them in the land which I give them to possess it.

32 Ye shall observe to do therefore as the Lord your God hath commanded you: ye shall not turn aside to the right hand or to the left.

33 Ye shall walk in all the ways which the Lord your God hath commanded you, that ye may live, and that it may be well with you, and that ye may prolong your days in the land which ye shall possess.

6 Now these are the commandments, the statutes, and the judgments, which the Lord your God commanded to teach you, that ye might do them in the land whither ye go to possess it:

2 That thou mightest fear the Lord thy God, to keep all his statutes and his commandments, which I command thee, thou, and thy son, and thy son's son, all the days of thy life; and that thy days may be prolonged.

3 Hear therefore, O Israel, and observe to do it; that it may be well with thee, and that ye may increase mightily, as the Lord God of thy fathers hath promised thee, in the land that floweth with milk and honey.

4 Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord:

5 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.

6 And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:

7 And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.

8 And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes.

9 And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.

10 And it shall be, when the Lord thy God shall have brought thee into the land which he sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give thee great and goodly cities, which thou buildedst not,

11 And houses full of all good things, which thou filledst not, and wells digged, which thou diggedst not, vineyards and olive trees, which thou plantedst not; when thou shalt have eaten and be full;

12 Then beware lest thou forget the Lord, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.

13 Thou shalt fear the Lord thy God, and serve him, and shalt swear by his name.

14 Ye shall not go after other gods, of the gods of the people which are round about you;

15 (For the Lord thy God is a jealous God among you) lest the anger of the Lord thy God be kindled against thee, and destroy thee from off the face of the earth.

16 Ye shall not tempt the Lord your God, as ye tempted him in Massah.

17 Ye shall diligently keep the commandments of the Lord your God, and his testimonies, and his statutes, which he hath commanded thee.

18 And thou shalt do that which is right and good in the sight of the Lord: that it may be well with thee, and that thou mayest go in and possess the good land which the Lord sware unto thy fathers.

19 To cast out all thine enemies from before thee, as the Lord hath spoken.

20 And when thy son asketh thee in time to come, saying, What mean the testimonies, and the statutes, and the judgments, which the Lord our God hath commanded you?

21 Then thou shalt say unto thy son, We were Pharaoh's bondmen in Egypt; and the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand:

22 And the Lord shewed signs and wonders, great and sore, upon Egypt, upon Pharaoh, and upon all his household, before our eyes:

23 And he brought us out from thence, that he might bring us in, to give us the land which he sware unto our fathers.

24 And the Lord commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear the Lord our God, for our good always, that he might preserve us alive, as it is at this day.

25 And it shall be our righteousness, if we observe to do all these commandments before the Lord our God, as he hath commanded us.

7 When the Lord thy God shall bring thee into the land whither thou goest to possess it, and hath cast out many nations before thee, the Hittites, and the Girgashites, and the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, seven nations greater and mightier than thou;

2 And when the Lord thy God shall deliver them before thee; thou shalt smite them, and utterly destroy them; thou shalt make no covenant with them, nor shew mercy unto them:

3 Neither shalt thou make marriages with them; thy daughter thou shalt not give unto his son, nor his daughter shalt thou take unto thy son.

4 For they will turn away thy son from following me, that they may serve other gods: so will the anger of the Lord be kindled against you, and destroy thee suddenly.

5 But thus shall ye deal with them; ye shall destroy their altars, and break down their images, and cut down their groves, and burn their graven images with fire.

6 For thou art an holy people unto the Lord thy God: the Lord thy God hath chosen thee to be a special people unto himself, above all people that are upon the face of the earth.

7 The Lord did not set his love upon you, nor choose you, because ye were more in number than any people; for ye were the fewest of all people:

8 But because the Lord loved you, and because he would keep the oath which he had sworn unto your fathers, hath the Lord brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you out of the house of bondmen, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.

9 Know therefore that the Lord thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations;

10 And repayeth them that hate him to their face, to destroy them: he will not be slack to him that hateth him, he will repay him to his face.

11 Thou shalt therefore keep the commandments, and the statutes, and the judgments, which I command thee this day, to do them.

12 Wherefore it shall come to pass, if ye hearken to these judgments, and keep, and do them, that the Lord thy God shall keep unto thee the covenant and the mercy which he sware unto thy fathers:

13 And he will love thee, and bless thee, and multiply thee: he will also bless the fruit of thy womb, and the fruit of thy land, thy corn, and thy wine, and thine oil, the increase of thy kine, and the flocks of thy sheep, in the land which he sware unto thy fathers to give thee.

14 Thou shalt be blessed above all people: there shall not be male or female barren among you, or among your cattle.

15 And the Lord will take away from thee all sickness, and will put none of the evil diseases of Egypt, which thou knowest, upon thee; but will lay them upon all them that hate thee.

16 And thou shalt consume all the people which the Lord thy God shall deliver thee; thine eye shall have no pity upon them: neither shalt thou serve their gods; for that will be a snare unto thee.

17 If thou shalt say in thine heart, These nations are more than I; how can I dispossess them?

18 Thou shalt not be afraid of them: but shalt well remember what the Lord thy God did unto Pharaoh, and unto all Egypt;

19 The great temptations which thine eyes saw, and the signs, and the wonders, and the mighty hand, and the stretched out arm, whereby the Lord thy God brought thee out: so shall the Lord thy God do unto all the people of whom thou art afraid.

20 Moreover the Lord thy God will send the hornet among them, until they that are left, and hide themselves from thee, be destroyed.

21 Thou shalt not be affrighted at them: for the Lord thy God is among you, a mighty God and terrible.

22 And the Lord thy God will put out those nations before thee by little and little: thou mayest not consume them at once, lest the beasts of the field increase upon thee.

23 But the Lord thy God shall deliver them unto thee, and shall destroy them with a mighty destruction, until they be destroyed.

24 And he shall deliver their kings into thine hand, and thou shalt destroy their name from under heaven: there shall no man be able to stand before thee, until thou have destroyed them.

25 The graven images of their gods shall ye burn with fire: thou shalt not desire the silver or gold that is on them, nor take it unto thee, lest thou be snared therin: for it is an abomination to the Lord thy God.

26 Neither shalt thou bring an abomination into thine house, lest thou be a cursed thing like it: but thou shalt utterly detest it, and thou shalt utterly abhor it; for it is a cursed thing.

8 All the commandments which I command thee this day shall ye observe to do, that ye may live, and multiply, and go in and possess the land which the Lord sware unto your fathers.

2 And thou shalt remember all the way which the Lord thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or no.

3 And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the Lord doth man live.

4 Thy raiment waxed not old upon thee, neither did thy foot swell, these forty years.

5 Thou shalt also consider in thine heart, that, as a man chasteneth his son, so the Lord thy God chasteneth thee.

6 Therefore thou shalt keep the commandments of the Lord thy God, to walk in his ways, and to fear him.

7 For the Lord thy God bringeth thee into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and depths that spring out of valleys and hills;

8 A land of wheat, and barley, and vines, and fig trees, and pomegranates; a land of oil olive, and honey;

9 A land wherein thou shalt eat bread without scarceness, thou shalt not lack any thing in it; a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills thou mayest dig brass.

10 When thou hast eaten and art full, then thou shalt bless the Lord thy God for the good land which he hath given thee.

11 Beware that thou forget not the Lord thy God, in not keeping his commandments, and his judgments, and his statutes, which I command thee this day:

12 Lest when thou hast eaten and art full, and hast built goodly houses, and dwelt therein;

13 And when thy herds and thy flocks multiply, and thy silver and thy gold is multiplied, and all that thou hast is multiplied;

14 Then thine heart be lifted up, and thou forget the Lord thy God, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage;

15 Who led thee through that great and terrible wilderness, wherein were fiery serpents, and scorpions, and drought, where there was no water; who brought thee forth water out of the rock of flint;

16 Who fed thee in the wilderness with manna, which thy fathers knew not, that he might humble thee, and that he might prove thee, to do thee good at thy latter end;

17 And thou say in thine heart, My power and the might of mine hand hath gotten me this wealth.

18 But thou shalt remember the Lord thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day.

19 And it shall be, if thou do at all forget the Lord thy God, and walk after other gods, and serve them, and worship them, I testify against you this day that ye shall surely perish.

20 As the nations which the Lord destroyeth before your face, so shall ye perish; because ye would not be obedient unto the voice of the Lord your God.

9 Hear, O Israel: Thou art to pass over Jordan this day, to go in to possess nations greater and mightier than thyself, cities great and fenced up to heaven,

2 A people great and tall, the children of the Anakims, whom thou knowest, and of whom thou hast heard say, Who can stand before the children of Anak!

3 Understand therefore this day, that the Lord thy God is he which goeth over before thee; as a consuming fire he shall destroy them, and he shall bring them down before thy face: so shalt thou drive them out, and destroy them quickly, as the Lord hath said unto thee.

4 Speak not thou in thine heart, after that the Lord thy God hath cast them out from before thee, saying, For my righteousness the Lord hath brought me in to possess this land: but for the wickedness of these nations the Lord doth drive them out from before thee.

5 Not for thy righteousness, or for the uprightness of thine heart, dost thou go to possess their land: but for the wickedness of these nations the Lord thy God doth drive them out from before thee, and that he may perform the word which the Lord sware unto thy fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

6 Understand therefore, that the Lord thy God giveth thee not this good land to possess it for thy righteousness; for thou art a stiffnecked people.

7 Remember, and forget not, how thou provokedst the Lord thy God to wrath in the wilderness: from the day that thou didst depart out of the land of Egypt, until ye came unto this place, ye have been rebellious against the Lord.

8 Also in Horeb ye provoked the Lord to wrath, so that the Lord was angry with you to have destroyed you.

9 When I was gone up into the mount to receive the tables of stone, even the tables of the covenant which the Lord made with you, then I abode in the mount forty days and forty nights, I neither did eat bread nor drink water:

10 And the Lord delivered unto me two tables of stone written with the finger of God; and on them was written according to all the words, which the Lord spake with you in the mount out of the midst of the fire in the day of the assembly.

11 And it came to pass at the end of forty days and forty nights, that the Lord gave me the two tables of stone, even the tables of the covenant.

12 And the Lord said unto me, Arise, get thee down quickly from hence; for thy people which thou hast brought forth out of Egypt have corrupted themselves; they are quickly turned aside out of the way which I commanded them; they have made them a molten image.

13 Furthermore the Lord spake unto me, saying, I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiffnecked people:

14 Let me alone, that I may destroy them, and blot out their name from under heaven: and I will make of thee a nation mightier and greater than they.

15 So I turned and came down from the mount, and the mount burned with fire: and the two tables of the covenant were in my two hands.

16 And I looked, and, behold, ye had sinned against the Lord your God, and had made you a molten calf: ye had turned aside quickly out of the way which the Lord had commanded you.

17 And I took the two tables, and cast them out of my two hands, and brake them before your eyes.

18 And I fell down before the Lord, as at the first, forty days and forty nights: I did neither eat bread, nor drink water, because of all your sins which ye sinned, in doing wickedly in the sight of the Lord, to provoke him to anger.

19 For I was afraid of the anger and hot displeasure, wherewith the Lord was wroth against you to destroy you. But the Lord hearkened unto me at that time also.

20 And the Lord was very angry with Aaron to have destroyed him: and I prayed for Aaron also the same time.

21 And I took your sin, the calf which ye had made, and burnt it with fire, and stamped it, and ground it very small, even until it was as small as dust: and I cast the dust thereof into the brook that descended out of the mount.

22 And at Taberah, and at Massah, and at Kibrothhattaavah, ye provoked the Lord to wrath.

23 Likewise when the Lord sent you from Kadeshbarnea, saying, Go up and possess the land which I have given you; then ye rebelled against the commandment of the Lord your God, and ye believed him not, nor hearkened to his voice.

24 Ye have been rebellious against the Lord from the day that I knew you.

25 Thus I fell down before the Lord forty days and forty nights, as I fell down at the first; because the Lord had said he would destroy you.

26 I prayed therefore unto the Lord, and said, O Lord God, destroy not thy people and thine inheritance, which thou hast redeemed through thy greatness, which thou hast brought forth out of Egypt with a mighty hand.

27 Remember thy servants, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; look not unto the stubbornness of this people, nor to their wickedness, nor to their sin:

28 Lest the land whence thou broughtest us out say, Because the Lord was not able to bring them into the land which he promised them, and because he hated them, he hath brought them out to slay them in the wilderness.

29 Yet they are thy people and thine inheritance, which thou broughtest out by thy mighty power and by thy stretched out arm.

10 At that time the Lord said unto me, Hew thee two tables of stone like unto the first, and come up unto me into the mount, and make thee an ark of wood.

2 And I will write on the tables the words that were in the first tables which thou brakest, and thou shalt put them in the ark.

3 And I made an ark of shittim wood, and hewed two tables of stone like unto the first, and went up into the mount, having the two tables in mine hand.

4 And he wrote on the tables, according to the first writing, the ten commandments, which the Lord spake unto you in the mount out of the midst of the fire in the day of the assembly: and the Lord gave them unto me.

5 And I turned myself and came down from the mount, and put the tables in the ark which I had made; and there they be, as the Lord commanded me.

6 And the children of Israel took their journey from Beeroth of the children of Jaakan to Mosera: there Aaron died, and there he was buried; and Eleazar his son ministered in the priest's office in his stead.

7 From thence they journeyed unto Gudgodah; and from Gudgodah to Jotbath, a land of rivers of waters.

8 At that time the Lord separated the tribe of Levi, to bear the ark of the covenant of the Lord, to stand before the Lord to minister unto him, and to bless in his name, unto this day.

9 Wherefore Levi hath no part nor inheritance with his brethren; the Lord is his inheritance, according as the Lord thy God promised him.

10 And I stayed in the mount, according to the first time, forty days and forty nights; and the Lord hearkened unto me at that time also, and the Lord would not destroy thee.

11 And the Lord said unto me, Arise, take thy journey before the people, that they may go in and possess the land, which I sware unto their fathers to give unto them.

12 And now, Israel, what doth the Lord thy God require of thee, but to fear the Lord thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve the Lord thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul,

13 To keep the commandments of the Lord, and his statutes, which I command thee this day for thy good?

14 Behold, the heaven and the heaven of heavens is the Lord's thy God, the earth also, with all that therein is.

15 Only the Lord had a delight in thy fathers to love them, and he chose their seed after them, even you above all people, as it is this day.

16 Circumcise therefore the foreskin of your heart, and be no more stiffnecked.

17 For the Lord your God is God of gods, and Lord of lords, a great God, a mighty, and a terrible, which regardeth not persons, nor taketh reward:

18 He doth execute the judgment of the fatherless and widow, and loveth the stranger, in giving him food and raiment.

19 Love ye therefore the stranger: for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt.

20 Thou shalt fear the Lord thy God; him shalt thou serve, and to him shalt thou cleave, and swear by his name.

21 He is thy praise, and he is thy God, that hath done for thee these great and terrible things, which thine eyes have seen.

22 Thy fathers went down into Egypt with threescore and ten persons; and now the Lord thy God hath made thee as the stars of heaven for multitude.

11 Therefore thou shalt love the Lord thy God, and keep his charge, and his statutes, and his judgments, and his commandments, alway.

2 And know ye this day: for I speak not with your children which have not known, and which have not seen the chastisement of the Lord your God, his greatness, his mighty hand, and his stretched out arm,

3 And his miracles, and his acts, which he did in the midst of Egypt unto Pharaoh the king of Egypt, and unto all his land;

4 And what he did unto the army of Egypt, unto their horses, and to their chariots; how he made the water of the Red sea to overflow them as they pursued after you, and how the Lord hath destroyed them unto this day;

5 And what he did unto you in the wilderness, until ye came into this place;

6 And what he did unto Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, the son of Reuben: how the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed them up, and their households, and their tents, and all the substance that was in their possession, in the midst of all Israel:

7 But your eyes have seen all the great acts of the Lord which he did.

8 Therefore shall ye keep all the commandments which I command you this day, that ye may be strong, and go in and possess the land, whither ye go to possess it;

9 And that ye may prolong your days in the land, which the Lord sware unto your fathers to give unto them and to their seed, a land that floweth with milk and honey.

10 For the land, whither thou goest in to possess it, is not as the land of Egypt, from whence ye came out, where thou sowedst thy seed, and wateredst it with thy foot, as a garden of herbs:

11 But the land, whither ye go to possess it, is a land of hills and valleys, and drinketh water of the rain of heaven:

12 A land which the Lord thy God careth for: the eyes of the Lord thy God are always upon it, from the beginning of the year even unto the end of the year.

13 And it shall come to pass, if ye shall hearken diligently unto my commandments which I command you this day, to love the Lord your God, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul,

14 That I will give you the rain of your land in his due season, the first rain and the latter rain, that thou mayest gather in thy corn, and thy wine, and thine oil.

15 And I will send grass in thy fields for thy cattle, that thou mayest eat and be full.

16 Take heed to yourselves, that your heart be not deceived, and ye turn aside, and serve other gods, and worship them;

17 And then the Lord's wrath be kindled against you, and he shut up the heaven, that there be no rain, and that the land yield not her fruit; and lest ye perish quickly from off the good land which the Lord giveth you.

18 Therefore shall ye lay up these my words in your heart and in your soul, and bind them for a sign upon your hand, that they may be as frontlets between your eyes.

19 And ye shall teach them your children, speaking of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.

20 And thou shalt write them upon the door posts of thine house, and upon thy gates:

21 That your days may be multiplied, and the days of your children, in the land which the Lord sware unto your fathers to give them, as the days of heaven upon the earth.

22 For if ye shall diligently keep all these commandments which I command you, to do them, to love the Lord your God, to walk in all his ways, and to cleave unto him;

23 Then will the Lord drive out all these nations from before you, and ye shall possess greater nations and mightier than yourselves.

24 Every place whereon the soles of your feet shall tread shall be yours: from the wilderness and Lebanon, from the river, the river Euphrates, even unto the uttermost sea shall your coast be.

25 There shall no man be able to stand before you: for the Lord your God shall lay the fear of you and the dread of you upon all the land that ye shall tread upon, as he hath said unto you.

26 Behold, I set before you this day a blessing and a curse;

27 A blessing, if ye obey the commandments of the Lord your God, which I command you this day:

28 And a curse, if ye will not obey the commandments of the Lord your God, but turn aside out of the way which I command you this day, to go after other gods, which ye have not known.

29 And it shall come to pass, when the Lord thy God hath brought thee in unto the land whither thou goest to possess it, that thou shalt put the blessing upon mount Gerizim, and the curse upon mount Ebal.

30 Are they not on the other side Jordan, by the way where the sun goeth down, in the land of the Canaanites, which dwell in the champaign over against Gilgal, beside the plains of Moreh?

31 For ye shall pass over Jordan to go in to possess the land which the Lord your God giveth you, and ye shall possess it, and dwell therein.

32 And ye shall observe to do all the statutes and judgments which I set before you this day.

12 These are the statutes and judgments, which ye shall observe to do in the land, which the Lord God of thy fathers giveth thee to possess it, all the days that ye live upon the earth.

2 Ye shall utterly destroy all the places, wherein the nations which ye shall possess served their gods, upon the high mountains, and upon the hills, and under every green tree:

3 And ye shall overthrow their altars, and break their pillars, and burn their groves with fire; and ye shall hew down the graven images of their gods, and destroy the names of them out of that place.

4 Ye shall not do so unto the Lord your God.

5 But unto the place which the Lord your God shall choose out of all your tribes to put his name there, even unto his habitation shall ye seek, and thither thou shalt come:

6 And thither ye shall bring your burnt offerings, and your sacrifices, and your tithes, and heave offerings of your hand, and your vows, and your freewill offerings, and the firstlings of your herds and of your flocks:

7 And there ye shall eat before the Lord your God, and ye shall rejoice in all that ye put your hand unto, ye and your households, wherein the Lord thy God hath blessed thee.

8 Ye shall not do after all the things that we do here this day, every man whatsoever is right in his own eyes.

9 For ye are not as yet come to the rest and to the inheritance, which the Lord your God giveth you.

10 But when ye go over Jordan, and dwell in the land which the Lord your God giveth you to inherit, and when he giveth you rest from all your enemies round about, so that ye dwell in safety;

11 Then there shall be a place which the Lord your God shall choose to cause his name to dwell there; thither shall ye bring all that I command you; your burnt offerings, and your sacrifices, your tithes, and the heave offering of your hand, and all your choice vows which ye vow unto the Lord:

12 And ye shall rejoice before the Lord your God, ye, and your sons, and your daughters, and your menservants, and your maidservants, and the Levite that is within your gates; forasmuch as he hath no part nor inheritance with you.

13 Take heed to thyself that thou offer not thy burnt offerings in every place that thou seest:

14 But in the place which the Lord shall choose in one of thy tribes, there thou shalt offer thy burnt offerings, and there thou shalt do all that I command thee.

15 Notwithstanding thou mayest kill and eat flesh in all thy gates, whatsoever thy soul lusteth after, according to the blessing of the Lord thy God which he hath given thee: the unclean and the clean may eat thereof, as of the roebuck, and as of the hart.

16 Only ye shall not eat the blood; ye shall pour it upon the earth as water.

17 Thou mayest not eat within thy gates the tithe of thy corn, or of thy wine, or of thy oil, or the firstlings of thy herds or of thy flock, nor any of thy vows which thou vowest, nor thy freewill offerings, or heave offering of thine hand:

18 But thou must eat them before the Lord thy God in the place which the Lord thy God shall choose, thou, and thy son, and thy daughter, and thy manservant, and thy maidservant, and the Levite that is within thy gates: and thou shalt rejoice before the Lord thy God in all that thou puttest thine hands unto.

19 Take heed to thyself that thou forsake not the Levite as long as thou livest upon the earth.

20 When the Lord thy God shall enlarge thy border, as he hath promised thee, and thou shalt say, I will eat flesh, because thy soul longeth to eat flesh; thou mayest eat flesh, whatsoever thy soul lusteth after.

21 If the place which the Lord thy God hath chosen to put his name there be too far from thee, then thou shalt kill of thy herd and of thy flock, which the Lord hath given thee, as I have commanded thee, and thou shalt eat in thy gates whatsoever thy soul lusteth after.

22 Even as the roebuck and the hart is eaten, so thou shalt eat them: the unclean and the clean shall eat of them alike.

23 Only be sure that thou eat not the blood: for the blood is the life; and thou mayest not eat the life with the flesh.

24 Thou shalt not eat it; thou shalt pour it upon the earth as water.

25 Thou shalt not eat it; that it may go well with thee, and with thy children after thee, when thou shalt do that which is right in the sight of the Lord.

26 Only thy holy things which thou hast, and thy vows, thou shalt take, and go unto the place which the Lord shall choose:

27 And thou shalt offer thy burnt offerings, the flesh and the blood, upon the altar of the Lord thy God: and the blood of thy sacrifices shall be poured out upon the altar of the Lord thy God, and thou shalt eat the flesh.

28 Observe and hear all these words which I command thee, that it may go well with thee, and with thy children after thee for ever, when thou doest that which is good and right in the sight of the Lord thy God.

29 When the Lord thy God shall cut off the nations from before thee, whither thou goest to possess them, and thou succeedest them, and dwellest in their land;

30 Take heed to thyself that thou be not snared by following them, after that they be destroyed from before thee; and that thou enquire not after their gods, saying, How did these nations serve their gods? even so will I do likewise.

31 Thou shalt not do so unto the Lord thy God: for every abomination to the Lord, which he hateth, have they done unto their gods; for even their sons and their daughters they have burnt in the fire to their gods.

32 What thing soever I command you, observe to do it: thou shalt not add thereto, nor diminish from it.
