“Lord, they have killed Thy prophets and torn down Thine altars, and I am left alone and they seek my life”?
Lord, they have killed thy prophets, they have digged down thine altars; and I am left alone, and they seek my life.
“Lord, they have killed Your prophets, they have torn down Your altars, and I alone am left [of the prophets], and they are seeking my life.”
Lord, they have killed Your prophets; they have demolished Your altars, and I alone am left, and they seek my life.
Lord, they have killed thy prophets, and digged down thine altars; and I am left alone, and they seek my life.
Lord, they have killed your prophets and torn down your altars. I am the only one left, and they are trying to take my life!
Lord, they have killed your prophets, and they have torn down your altars. I’m the only one left, and they are trying to take my life.
Adonai, they have killed your prophets and torn down your altars, and I’m the only one left, and now they want to kill me too!”
He said, “Lord, they killed your prophets and destroyed your altars. I am the only one left, and now they want to kill me.”
Lord, they have killed thy prophets, they have dug down thine altars; and *I* have been left alone, and they seek my life.
“Lord, they killed Your prophets, they tore-down Your altars, and I alone was left, and they are seeking my life”.
Lord, they have slain thy prophets, they have dug down thy altars; and I am left alone, and they seek my life.
“Lord, they have killed your prophets and destroyed your altars. I am the only prophet still living, and they are trying to kill me now.”
‘Lord God, they have killed your prophets. They have destroyed the altars where people offered sacrifices to you. I am the only person alive who still serves you. And they are trying to kill me.’
“Lord, they have killed your prophets and torn down your altars. I am the only one left, and they are trying to take my life.”
“Lord, they have killed your prophets, they have demolished your altars, and I alone am left, and they seek my life.”
“Lord, they have killed your prophets, they have demolished your altars, and I alone am left, and they seek my life.”
“Lord,” he said, “they have killed your prophets, and they have ·destroyed [torn/burned down] your altars. I am the only one left, and now they are ·trying to kill me, too [seeking my life; 1 Kin. 19:10, 14].”
Lord, they have killed thy Prophets, and dug down thine Altars: and I am left alone, and they seek my life?
“Lord, they’ve killed your prophets and torn down your altars. I’m the only one left, and they’re trying to take my life.”
“Lord, they have killed your prophets and torn down your altars; I am the only one left, and they are trying to kill me.”
Lord, they have killed Your prophets and torn down Your altars. I am the only one left, and they are trying to take my life!
“They have killed your prophets, and they have destroyed your altars. I am the only prophet left. And now they are trying to kill me, too.”
“Lord, they have killed your prophets and demolished your altars. I am the only one left, and they are trying to take my life.”
It is unthinkable that God should have repudiated his own people, the people whose destiny he himself appointed. Don’t you remember what the scripture says in the story of Elijah? How he pleaded with God on Israel’s behalf: ‘Lord, they have killed your prophets, and torn down your altars, and I alone am left, and they seek my life’.
Lord, they have killed thy prophets and ruined thine altars; and I am left alone, and they seek my life.
Lord, they have killed thy prophets, and digged down thine altars; and I am left alone, and they seek my life.
Lord, they have killed thy prophets, and digged down thine altars; and I am left alone, and they seek my life.
“Lord, they have killed Your prophets, they have torn down Your altars, and I alone am left, and they are seeking my life.”
“Lord, they have killed your prophets, they have torn down your altars, and I alone am left, and they are seeking my life!”
No, God has not discarded his own people whom he chose from the very beginning. Do you remember what the Scriptures say about this? Elijah the prophet was complaining to God about the Jews, telling God how they had killed the prophets and torn down God’s altars; Elijah claimed that he was the only one left in all the land who still loved God, and now they were trying to kill him too.
Does this mean, then, that God is so fed up with Israel that he’ll have nothing more to do with them? Hardly. Remember that I, the one writing these things, am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham out of the tribe of Benjamin. You can’t get much more Semitic than that! So we’re not talking about repudiation. God has been too long involved with Israel, has too much invested, to simply wash his hands of them. Do you remember that time Elijah was agonizing over this same Israel and cried out in prayer? God, they murdered your prophets, They trashed your altars; I’m the only one left and now they’re after me! And do you remember God’s answer? I still have seven thousand who haven’t quit, Seven thousand who are loyal to the finish. It’s the same today. There’s a fiercely loyal minority still—not many, perhaps, but probably more than you think. They’re holding on, not because of what they think they’re going to get out of it, but because they’re convinced of God’s grace and purpose in choosing them. If they were only thinking of their own immediate self-interest, they would have left long ago.
