Psalm 039
Print
I said, “I will take heed of my ways, that I sin not with my tongue; I will keep my mouth with a bridle while the wicked is before me.”
I was dumb with silence; I held my peace, even from good, and my sorrow was stirred.
My heart was hot within me; while I was musing, the fire burned. Then I spoke with my tongue:
Lord, make me to know mine end, and the measure of my days, what it is, that I may know how frail I am.
Behold, Thou hast made my days as a handbreadth, and mine age is as nothing before Thee; verily every man in his best state is altogether vanity. Selah
“Surely every man walketh in a vain show; surely they are disquieted in vain; he heapeth up riches, and knoweth not who shall gather them.
“And now, Lord, for what do I wait? My hope is in Thee.
Deliver me from all my transgressions; make me not the reproach of the foolish.
I was dumb, I opened not my mouth, because Thou didst it.
Remove Thy stroke away from me; I am consumed by the blow of Thine hand.
When with rebukes Thou dost correct man for iniquity, Thou makest his beauty to be consumed away like a moth; surely every man is vanity. Selah
“Hear my prayer, O Lord, and give ear unto my cry; hold not Thy peace at my tears; for I am a stranger with Thee and a sojourner, as all my fathers were.
O spare me, that I may recover strength before I go hence and am no more.”
For the Chief Musician, for Jeduthun. A Psalm of David. I said, I will take heed to my ways, That I sin not with my tongue: I will keep my mouth with a bridle, While the wicked is before me.
I was dumb with silence, I held my peace, even from good; And my sorrow was stirred.
My heart was hot within me; While I was musing the fire burned; Then spake I with my tongue:
Jehovah, make me to know mine end, And the measure of my days, what it is; Let me know how frail I am.
Behold, thou hast made my days as handbreadths; And my life-time is as nothing before thee: Surely every man at his best estate is altogether vanity. Selah
Surely every man walketh in a vain show; Surely they are disquieted in vain: He heapeth up riches, and knoweth not who shall gather them.
And now, Lord, what wait I for? My hope is in thee.
Deliver me from all my transgressions: Make me not the reproach of the foolish.
I was dumb, I opened not my mouth; Because thou didst it.
Remove thy stroke away from me: I am consumed by the blow of thy hand.
When thou with rebukes dost correct man for iniquity, Thou makest his beauty to consume away like a moth: Surely every man is vanity. Selah
Hear my prayer, O Jehovah, and give ear unto my cry; Hold not thy peace at my tears: For I am a stranger with thee, A sojourner, as all my fathers were.
Oh spare me, that I may recover strength, Before I go hence, and be no more.
To the Chief Musician; for Jeduthun. A Psalm of David. I said, “I will guard my ways That I may not sin with my tongue; I will muzzle my mouth While the wicked are in my presence.”
I was mute and silent [before my enemies], I refrained even from good, And my distress grew worse.
My heart was hot within me. While I was musing the fire burned; Then I spoke with my tongue:
Lord, let me know my [life’s] end And [to appreciate] the extent of my days; Let me know how frail I am [how transient is my stay here].
“Behold, You have made my days as [short as] hand widths, And my lifetime is as nothing in Your sight. Surely every man at his best is a mere breath [a wisp of smoke, a vapor that vanishes]! Selah.
“Surely every man walks around like a shadow [in a charade]; Surely they make an uproar for nothing; Each one builds up riches, not knowing who will receive them.
“And now, Lord, for what do I expectantly wait? My hope [my confident expectation] is in You.
“Save me from all my transgressions; Do not make me the scorn and reproach of the [self-righteous, arrogant] fool.
“I am mute, I do not open my mouth, Because it is You who has done it.
“Remove Your plague from me; I am wasting away because of the conflict and opposition of Your hand.
“With rebukes You discipline man for sin; You consume like a moth what is precious to him; Surely every man is a mere breath [a wisp of smoke, a vapor that vanishes]. Selah.
“Hear my prayer, O Lord, and listen to my cry; Do not be silent at my tears; For I am Your temporary guest, A sojourner like all my fathers.
“O look away from me, that I may smile and again know joy Before I depart and am no more.”
I said, I will take heed and guard my ways, that I may sin not with my tongue; I will muzzle my mouth as with a bridle while the wicked are before me.
I was dumb with silence, I held my peace without profit and had no comfort away from good, while my distress was renewed.
My heart was hot within me. While I was musing, the fire burned; then I spoke with my tongue:
Lord, make me to know my end and [to appreciate] the measure of my days—what it is; let me know and realize how frail I am [how transient is my stay here].
Behold, You have made my days as [short as] handbreadths, and my lifetime is as nothing in Your sight. Truly every man at his best is merely a breath! Selah [pause, and think calmly of that]!
Surely every man walks to and fro—like a shadow in a pantomime; surely for futility and emptiness he is in turmoil; each one heaps up riches, not knowing who will gather them.
And now, Lord, what do I wait for and expect? My hope and expectation are in You.
Deliver me from all my transgressions; make me not the scorn and reproach of the [self-confident] fool!
I am dumb, I open not my mouth, for it is You Who has done it.
Remove Your stroke away from me; I am consumed by the conflict and the blow of Your hand.
When with rebukes You correct and chasten man for sin, You waste his beauty like a moth and what is dear to him consumes away; surely every man is a mere breath. Selah [pause, and think calmly of that]!
Hear my prayer, O Lord, and give ear to my cry; hold not Your peace at my tears! For I am Your passing guest, a temporary resident, as all my fathers were.
O look away from me and spare me, that I may recover cheerfulness and encouraging strength and know gladness before I go and am no more!
To the chief Musician, even to Jeduthun, A Psalm of David. I said, I will take heed to my ways, that I sin not with my tongue: I will keep my mouth with a bridle, while the wicked is before me.
I was dumb with silence, I held my peace, even from good; and my sorrow was stirred.

Behold, thou hast made my days as an handbreadth; and mine age is as nothing before thee: verily every man at his best state is altogether vanity. Selah.
Surely every man walketh in a vain shew: surely they are disquieted in vain: he heapeth up riches, and knoweth not who shall gather them.
And now, Lord, what wait I for? my hope is in thee.
Deliver me from all my transgressions: make me not the reproach of the foolish.
I was dumb, I opened not my mouth; because thou didst it.

For the choir director, for Jeduthun. A psalm of David. I said, “I will guard my ways so that I may not sin with my tongue; I will guard my mouth with a muzzle as long as the wicked are in my presence.”
I was speechless and quiet; I kept silent, even from speaking good, and my pain intensified.
My heart grew hot within me; as I mused, a fire burned. I spoke with my tongue:
Lord, make me aware of my end and the number of my days so that I will know how short-lived I am.
In fact, you have made my days just inches long, and my life span is as nothing to you. Yes, every human being stands as only a vapor.Selah
Yes, a person goes about like a mere shadow. Indeed, they rush around in vain, gathering possessions without knowing who will get them.
“Now, Lord, what do I wait for? My hope is in you.
Rescue me from all my transgressions; do not make me the taunt of fools.
I am speechless; I do not open my mouth because of what you have done.
Remove your torment from me. Because of the force of your hand I am finished.
You discipline a person with punishment for iniquity, consuming like a moth what is precious to him; yes, every human being is only a vapor.Selah
“Hear my prayer, Lord, and listen to my cry for help; do not be silent at my tears. For I am here with you as an alien, a temporary resident like all my ancestors.
Turn your angry gaze from me so that I may be cheered up before I die and am gone.”
I promised I would watch my steps so as not to sin with my tongue; promised to keep my mouth shut as long as the wicked were in my presence.
So I was completely quiet, silent. I kept my peace, but it did no good. My pain got worse.
My heart got hot inside me; while stewing over it, the fire burned. Then I spoke out with my tongue:
“Let me know my end, Lord. How many days do I have left? I want to know how brief my time is.”
You’ve made my days so short; my lifetime is like nothing in your eyes. Yes, a human life is nothing but a puff of air! Selah
Yes, people wander around like shadows; yes, they hustle and bustle, but pointlessly; they don’t even know who will get the wealth they’ve amassed.
So now, Lord, what should I be waiting for? My hope is set on you.
Deliver me from all my sins; don’t make me some foolish person’s joke.
I am completely silent; I won’t open my mouth because you have acted.
Get this plague of yours off me! I’m being destroyed by the blows from your fist.
You discipline people for their sin, punishing them; like a moth, you ruin what they treasure. Yes, a human life is just a puff of air! Selah
Hear my prayer, Lord! Listen closely to my cry for help! Please don’t ignore my tears! I’m just a foreigner— an immigrant staying with you, just like all my ancestors were.
Look away from me so I can be happy again before I pass away and am gone.
For the leader. Set in the style of Y’dutun. A psalm of David:
I said, “I will watch how I behave, so that I won’t sin with my tongue; I will put a muzzle on my mouth whenever the wicked confront me.”
I was silent, said nothing, not even good; but my pain kept being stirred up.
My heart grew hot within me; whenever I thought of it, the fire burned. Then, [at last,] I let my tongue speak:
“Make me grasp, Adonai, what my end must be, what it means that my days are numbered; let me know what a transient creature I am.
You have made my days like handbreadths; for you, the length of my life is like nothing.” Yes, everyone, no matter how firmly he stands, is merely a puff of wind. (Selah)
Humans go about like shadows; their turmoil is all for nothing. They accumulate wealth, not knowing who will enjoy its benefits.
Now, Adonai, what am I waiting for? You are my only hope.
Rescue me from all my transgressions; don’t make me the butt of fools.
I am silent, I keep my mouth shut, because it is you who have done it.
Stop raining blows on me; the pounding of your fist is wearing me down.
With rebukes you discipline people for their guilt; like a moth, you destroy what makes them attractive; yes, everyone is merely a puff of wind. (Selah)
Hear my prayer, Adonai, listen to my cry, don’t be deaf to my weeping; for with you, I am just a traveler passing through, like all my ancestors.
Turn your gaze from me, so I can smile again before I depart and cease to exist.
(A psalm by David for Jeduthun, the music leader.) I told myself, “I'll be careful not to sin by what I say, and I'll muzzle my mouth when evil people are near.”
I kept completely silent, but it did no good, and I hurt even worse.
I felt a fire burning inside, and the more I thought, the more it burned, until at last I said:
“Please, Lord, show me my future. Will I soon be gone?
You made my life short, so brief that the time means nothing to you. “Human life is but a breath,
and it disappears like a shadow. Our struggles are senseless; we store up more and more, without ever knowing who will get it all.
“What am I waiting for? I depend on you, Lord!
Save me from my sins. Don't let fools sneer at me.
You treated me like this, and I kept silent, not saying a word.
“Won't you stop punishing me? You have worn me down.
You punish us severely because of our sins. Like a moth, you destroy what we treasure most. We are as frail as a breath.
“Listen, Lord, to my prayer! My eyes are flooded with tears, as I pray to you. I am merely a stranger visiting in your home as my ancestors did.
Stop being angry with me and let me smile again before I am dead and gone.”
To the chief Musician, to Jeduthun. A Psalm of David. I said, I will take heed to my ways, that I sin not with my tongue: I will keep my mouth with a muzzle, while the wicked is before me.
I was dumb with silence, I held my peace from good; and my sorrow was stirred.
My heart burned within me; the fire was kindled in my musing: I spoke with my tongue,
Make me to know, Jehovah, mine end, and the measure of my days, what it is: I shall know how frail I am.
Behold, thou hast made my days [as] hand-breadths, and my lifetime is as nothing before thee; verily, every man, [even] the high placed, is altogether vanity. Selah.
Verily, man walketh in a vain show; verily they are disquieted in vain; he heapeth up [riches], and knoweth not who shall gather them.
And now, what wait I for, Lord? my hope is in thee.
Deliver me from all my transgressions; make me not the reproach of the foolish.
I was dumb, I opened not my mouth; for *thou* hast done [it].
Remove thy stroke away from me: I am consumed by the blow of thy hand.
When thou with rebukes dost correct a man for iniquity, thou makest his beauty to consume away like a moth: surely, every man is vanity. Selah.
Hear my prayer, Jehovah, and give ear unto my cry; be not silent at my tears: for I am a stranger with thee, a sojourner, like all my fathers.
Look away from me, and let me recover strength, before I go hence and be no more.
Unto the end, a psalm for David himself.
With expectation I have waited for the Lord, and he was attentive to me.
And he heard my prayers, and brought me out of the pit of misery and the mire of dregs. And he set my feet upon a rock, and directed my steps.
And he put a new canticle into my mouth, a song to our God. Many shall see, and shall fear: and they shall hope in the Lord.
Blessed is the man whose trust is in the name of the Lord; and who hath not had regard to vanities, and lying follies.
Thou hast multiplied thy wonderful works, O Lord my God: and in thy thoughts there is no one like to thee. I have declared and I have spoken they are multiplied above number.
Sacrifice and oblation thou didst not desire; but thou hast pierced ears for me. Burnt offering and sin offering thou didst not require:
Then said I, Behold I come. In the head of the book it is written of me
That I should do thy will: O my God, I have desired it, and thy law in the midst of my heart.
I have declared thy justice in a great church, lo, I will not restrain my lips: O Lord, thou knowest it.
I have not hid thy justice within my heart: I have declared thy truth and thy salvation. I have not concealed thy mercy and thy truth from a great council.
Withhold not thou, O Lord, thy tender mercies from me: thy mercy and thy truth have always upheld me.
For evils without number have surrounded me; my iniquities have overtaken me, and I was not able to see. They are multiplied above the hairs of my head: and my heart hath forsaken me.
Be pleased, O Lord, to deliver me, look down, O Lord, to help me.
Let them be confounded and ashamed together, that seek after my soul to take it away. Let them be turned backward and be ashamed that desire evils to me.
Let them immediately bear their confusion, that say to me: 'T is well, 't is well.
Let all that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee: and let such as love thy salvation say always: The Lord be magnified.
But I am a beggar and poor: the Lord is careful for me. Thou art my helper and my protector: O my God, be not slack.
To the director, Jeduthun. A song of David. I said, “I will be careful about what I say. I will not let my tongue cause me to sin. I will keep my mouth closed when I am around wicked people.”
So I didn’t say anything. I didn’t even say anything good, but I became even more upset.
I was very angry, and the more I thought about it, the angrier I became. So I said something.
Lord, tell me, what will happen to me now? Tell me, how long will I live? Let me know how short my life really is.
You gave me only a short life. Compared to you, my whole life is nothing. The life of every human is like a cloud that quickly disappears. Selah
Our life is like an image in a mirror. We rush through life collecting things, but we don’t know who will get them after we die.
So, Lord, what hope do I have? You are my hope!
Save me from the bad things I did. Don’t let me be treated like a fool.
I will not open my mouth. I will not say anything. You did what should have been done.
But please stop punishing me. You will destroy me if you do not stop.
You punish people for doing wrong to teach them the right way to live. As a moth destroys cloth, you destroy what people love. Yes, our lives are like a small cloud that quickly disappears. Selah
Lord, hear my prayer! Listen to the words I cry to you. Look at my tears. I am only a traveler passing through this life with you. Like all my ancestors, I will live here only a short time.
Leave me alone and let me be happy before I am dead and gone.
David wrote this song for Jeduthun, the leader of the music. I said, ‘I will be careful what I do, so that I do not sin. I will also be careful what I say. When wicked people are listening, I will not even open my mouth.’
So I did not speak a word, even about good things. That made me very upset.
It was like a fire inside me! As I thought more about it, I just had to say something! So I said this:
Lord, tell me about my life. Tell me how long it will be, and when it will finish. I need to remember that life is only short.
Yes, you have made the days of my life only a few! The time that I live seems very short to you. Human life is only a breath, even for those who seem to be strong. Selah.
As we live, we are just like shadows. We work to get things for ourselves. We may get a lot of money, but we do not know who will have it after we die.’
So, my Lord, what help can I hope to get? You are the only one that I can really trust!
Save me from all my sins! Do not let fools insult me.
I will not say anything more. I will not open my mouth, because it is you who have punished me!
Please do not hurt me any more! You have already punished me enough, so that I am almost dead!
When people do wrong things, you warn them and you punish them. You destroy their valuable things, like a moth eats cloth! Yes, our lives are only a breath! Selah.
Lord, please hear my prayer. Listen to me when I call to you for help. Do not turn away from me when I weep. I need your help, like a foreign person who lives away from his home. I live on earth as a stranger, like all my ancestors did.
Stop being angry with me, so that I can be happy again before I die.
For the choir director. For Jeduthun. A psalm by David. I said, “I will guard my ways so that I do not sin with my tongue. I will keep a muzzle on my mouth as long as the wicked are confronting me.”
I said nothing. I kept silent. I did not even say anything good, but my pain became worse.
Inside me my heart grew hot. As I fretted, the fire burned. So I spoke with my tongue.
Lord, help me understand my end. What is the limit of my days? Let me know how fleeting I am.
See, you have cut short my days. My brief time before you is like nothing. Indeed, every person, even at his best, is just a puff of air. Interlude
A man flickers like a mirage. He really has no more effect than a breeze. He piles things up, never knowing who will get them.
But now what do I wait for, Lord? My hope is in you.
Save me from all my rebellious acts. Do not let fools scorn me.
I said nothing. I did not open my mouth, because you are the one who caused this.
Stop punching me. By the attack of your hand I am finished.
By your rebuke against guilt you discipline a man. Like a moth you consume what he desires. Indeed, every person is nothing but a puff of air. Interlude
Hear my prayer, O Lord. Listen to my cry. Do not ignore my tears, for with you I am an alien, just a visitor, as were all my ancestors.
Look away from me, so I can smile again before I depart and am no more.

1 David uttereth with what great grief and bitterness of mind he was driven to these outrageous complaints of his infirmities. 2 For he confesseth that when he had determined silence, that he brast forth yet into words, that he would not, through the greatness of his grief. 4 Then he rehearseth certain requests which taste of the infirmity of man. 8 And mixeth with them many prayers: but all do show a mind wonderfully trembled, that it may plainly appear how he did strive mightily against death and desperation. To the excellent Musician Jeduthun. A Psalm of David. I thought, I will take heed to my ways, that I sin not with my tongue: I will keep my mouth bridled, while the wicked is in my sight.
I was dumb and spake nothing: I kept silence even from good, and my sorrow was more stirred.
Mine heart was hot within me, and while I was musing, the fire kindled, and I spake with my tongue, saying,
Lord, let me know mine end, and the measure of my days, what it is: let me know how long I have to live.
Behold, thou hast made my days as an hand breadth, and mine age as nothing in respect of thee: surely every man in his best state is altogether vanity. Selah.
Doubtless man walketh in a shadow, and disquieteth himself in vain: he heapeth up riches, and cannot tell who shall gather them.
And now Lord, what wait I for? mine hope is even in thee.
Deliver me from all my transgressions, and make me not a rebuke unto the foolish.
I should have been dumb, and not have opened my mouth, because thou didst it.
Take thy plague away from me: for I am consumed by the stroke of thine hand.
When thou with rebukes dost chastise man for iniquity, thou as a moth makest his beauty to consume: surely every man is vanity. Selah.
Hear my prayer, O Lord, and hearken unto my cry: keep not silence at my tears, for I am a stranger with thee, and a sojourner as all my fathers.
Stay thine anger from me, that I may recover my strength, before I go hence and be not.
For the choir director; for Jeduthun; a psalm by David. I said, “I will watch my ways so that I do not sin with my tongue. I will bridle my mouth while wicked people are in my presence.”
I remained totally speechless. I kept silent, although it did me no good. While I was deep in thought, my pain grew worse.
My heart burned like a fire flaring up within me. Then I spoke with my tongue:
“Teach me, O Lord, about the end of my life. Teach me about the number of days I have left so that I may know how temporary my life is.
Indeed, you have made the length of my days ⌞only⌟ a few inches. My life span is nothing compared to yours. Certainly, everyone alive is like a whisper in the wind. Selah
Each person who walks around is like a shadow. They are busy for no reason. They accumulate riches without knowing who will get them.”
And now, Lord, what am I waiting for? My hope is in you!
Rescue me from all my rebellious acts. Do not disgrace me in front of godless fools.
I remained speechless. I did not open my mouth because you are the one who has done this.
Remove the sickness you laid upon me. My life is over because you struck me with your hand.
With stern warnings you discipline people for their crimes. Like a moth you eat away at what is dear to them. Certainly, everyone is like a whisper in the wind. Selah
Listen to my prayer, O Lord. Open your ear to my cry for help. Do not be deaf to my tears, for I am a foreign resident with you, a stranger like all my ancestors.
Look away from me so that I may smile again before I go away and am no more.
I said, “I will be careful about what I do and will not let my tongue make me sin; I will not say anything while evil people are near.”
I kept quiet, not saying a word, not even about anything good! But my suffering only grew worse,
and I was overcome with anxiety. The more I thought, the more troubled I became; I could not keep from asking:
Lord, how long will I live? When will I die? Tell me how soon my life will end.”
How short you have made my life! In your sight my lifetime seems nothing. Indeed every living being is no more than a puff of wind,
no more than a shadow. All we do is for nothing; we gather wealth, but don't know who will get it.
What, then, can I hope for, Lord? I put my hope in you.
Save me from all my sins, and don't let fools make fun of me.
I will keep quiet, I will not say a word, for you are the one who made me suffer like this.
Don't punish me any more! I am about to die from your blows.
You punish our sins by your rebukes, and like a moth you destroy what we love. Indeed we are no more than a puff of wind!
Hear my prayer, Lord, and listen to my cry; come to my aid when I weep. Like all my ancestors I am only your guest for a little while.
Leave me alone so that I may have some happiness before I go away and am no more.
For the choir director, for Jeduthun. A Davidic psalm.
Lord, reveal to me the end of my life and the number of my days. Let me know how short-lived I am.
You, indeed, have made my days short in length, and my life span as nothing in Your sight. Yes, every mortal man is only a vapor.Selah
“Certainly, man walks about like a mere shadow. Indeed, they frantically rush around in vain, gathering possessions without knowing who will get them.
Now, Lord, what do I wait for? My hope is in You.
Deliver me from all my transgressions; do not make me the taunt of fools.
I am speechless; I do not open my mouth because of what You have done.
Remove Your torment from me; I fade away because of the force of Your hand.
You discipline a man with punishment for sin, consuming like a moth what is precious to him; every man is only a vapor.Selah
“Hear my prayer, Lord, and listen to my cry for help; do not be silent at my tears. For I am a foreigner residing with You, a temporary resident like all my fathers.
Turn Your angry gaze from me so that I may be cheered up before I die and am gone.”
For the director of music. For Jeduthun. A song of David. I said, “I will be careful how I act. I will not sin by what I say. I will be careful what I say around wicked people.”
So I kept very quiet. I didn’t even say anything good. But I became even more upset.
I became very angry inside. And the more I thought about it, the angrier I became. So I spoke:
“Lord, tell me when the end will come. How long will I live? Let me know how long I have.
You have given me only a short life. My lifetime is like nothing to you. Everyone’s life is only a breath. Selah
A person is like a shadow moving about. All his work is for nothing. He collects things, but he doesn’t know who will get them.
“So, Lord, what hope do I have? You are my hope.
Save me from all my sins. Don’t let wicked fools make fun of me.
I am quiet. I do not open my mouth. You are the one who has done this.
Quit punishing me. Your beating is about to kill me.
You correct and punish people for their sins. Like a moth, you destroy what they love. Everyone’s life is only a breath. Selah
“Lord, hear my prayer. Listen to my cry. Do not ignore my tears. I am like a visitor with you. Like my ancestors, I’m only here a short time.
Leave me alone so I can be happy. Soon I will leave and be no more.”
To the Director: To Jeduthun. A Davidic Psalm. I told myself, “I will keep watch over my tongue to keep from sinning. I will muzzle my mouth when the wicked are around.”
I was as silent as a mute person; I said nothing, not even something good, and my distress deepened.
My heart within me became incensed; as I thought about it, the fire burned. Then I spoke out:
Lord, let me know how my life ends, and the standard by which you will measure my days, whatever it is! Then I will know how transient my life is.
Look, you have made my life span fit in your hand; It is nothing compared to yours. Surely every person at their best is a puff of wind. Interlude
In fact, people walk around as shadows. Surely, they busy themselves for nothing, heaping up possessions but not knowing who will get them.
How long, Lord, will I wait expectantly? I have placed my hope in you.
Deliver me from all my transgressions, and do not let fools scorn me.”
I remain silent; I do not open my mouth, for you are the one who acted.
Stop scourging me, since I have been crushed by your heavy hand.
You rebuke by chastening a man with the consequence of iniquities; you destroy what is attractive to him, as one would treat a moth. Indeed, every person is a puff of wind. Interlude
Hear my prayer, Lord, pay attention to my cry, and do not ignore my tears. I am an alien in your presence, a stranger just like my ancestors were.
Stop looking at me with chastisement, so I can smile again, before I depart and am no more.
To the Overcomer, even to Jeduthun, A Psalm of David. ¶ I said, I will take heed to my ways that I sin not with my tongue: I will keep my mouth with a bit while the wicked is against me.
I was dumb with silence; I held my peace, even from good; and my sorrow was stirred.
My heart was hot within me, while I was musing the fire burned; then I spoke with my tongue,
LORD, make me to know my end and the measure of my days, what it is that I may know how long I am to be of this world.
Behold, thou hast made my days as a handbreadth, and my age is as nothing before thee; verily every man that lives is altogether vanity. Selah.
Surely man walks in darkness; surely they are disquieted in vain; they heap up riches not knowing who shall gather them.
¶ And now, Lord, what shall I wait for? My hope is in thee.
Deliver me from all my rebellions; do not make me the reproach of the foolish.
I was dumb, I opened not my mouth because thou didst it.
Remove thy stroke away from me: I am consumed by the blow of thine hand.
When thou with chastening dost correct man for iniquity, thou makest his greatness to consume away like a moth; surely every man is vanity. Selah.
Hear my prayer, O LORD, and give ear unto my cry; hold not thy peace at my tears: for I am a stranger with thee and a sojourner, as all my fathers were.
O spare me, that I may recover strength before I go from here and be no more.
I said, I will take heed to my ways, that I sin not with my tongue: I will keep my mouth with a bridle, while the wicked is before me.
I was dumb with silence, I held my peace, even from good; and my sorrow was stirred.
My heart was hot within me, while I was musing the fire burned: then spake I with my tongue,
Lord, make me to know mine end, and the measure of my days, what it is: that I may know how frail I am.
Remove thy stroke away from me: I am consumed by the blow of thine hand.
When thou with rebukes dost correct man for iniquity, thou makest his beauty to consume away like a moth: surely every man is vanity. Selah.
Hear my prayer, O Lord, and give ear unto my cry; hold not thy peace at my tears: for I am a stranger with thee, and a sojourner, as all my fathers were.
O spare me, that I may recover strength, before I go hence, and be no more.
To the chief Musician, even to Jeduthun, A Psalm of David. I said, I will take heed to my ways, that I sin not with my tongue: I will keep my mouth with a bridle, while the wicked is before me.

For the choir director. For Jeduthun. A Psalm of David. I said, “I will keep watch over my ways That I may not sin with my tongue; I will keep watch over my mouth as with a muzzle While the wicked are in my presence.”
I was mute with silence, I even kept silent from speaking good, And my anguish grew worse.
My heart was hot within me, While I meditated the fire was burning; Then I spoke with my tongue:
“Yahweh, cause me to know my end And what is the extent of my days; Let me know how transient I am.
Behold, You have made my days as handbreadths, And my lifetime as nothing before You; Surely every man, even standing firm, is altogether vanity. Selah.
Surely every man walks about as a shadow; Surely they make an uproar in vain; He piles up riches and does not know who will gather them.
“And now, Lord, what do I hope in? My expectation is in You.
Deliver me from all my transgressions; Make me not the reproach of the wicked fool.
I have become mute, I do not open my mouth, Because it is You who have done it.
Remove Your plague from me; Because of the opposition of Your hand I am wasting away.
With reproofs You chasten a man for iniquity; You consume as a moth what is precious to him; Surely every man is vanity. Selah.
“Hear my prayer, O Yahweh, and give ear to my cry for help; Do not be silent at my tears; For I am a sojourner with You, A foreign resident like all my fathers.
Turn Your gaze away from me, that I may smile again Before I go and am no more.”

I was mute with silence. I was silent even from saying good things, and my pain was stirred up.
My heart grew hot inside me; in my sighing a fire burned. Then I spoke with my tongue,
“Let me know, O Yahweh, my end, and what is the measure of my days. Let me know how transient I am.”
Look, you have made my days mere handbreadths, and my lifespan as nothing next to you. Surely every person standing firm is complete vanity. Selah
Surely a man walks about as a mere shadow; surely in vain they bustle about. He heaps up possessions but does not know who will gather them in.
And now, O Lord, for what do I wait? My hope is for you.
From all my transgressions deliver me; do not make me the taunt of the fool.
I am mute. I do not open my mouth, for you, yourself, have done it.
Remove from me your affliction. By the opposition of your hand I perish.
When with rebukes you chastise a man for sin, you consume like a moth his delightful things. Surely everyone is a mere vapor. Selah
Hear my prayer, O Yahweh, and listen to my cry for help; do not be deaf to my tears. For I am an alien with you, a sojourner like all my ancestors.
Look away from me that I may be cheerful, before I depart and I am no more.
I said to myself, I’m going to quit complaining! I’ll keep quiet, especially when the ungodly are around me.
But as I stood there silently the turmoil within me grew to the bursting point. The more I mused, the hotter the fires inside. Then at last I spoke and pled with God:
Lord, help me to realize how brief my time on earth will be. Help me to know that I am here for but a moment more.
My life is no longer than my hand! My whole lifetime is but a moment to you. Proud man! Frail as breath! A shadow! And all his busy rushing ends in nothing. He heaps up riches for someone else to spend.
And so, Lord, my only hope is in you.
Save me from being overpowered by my sins, for even fools will mock me then.
Lord, I am speechless before you. I will not open my mouth to speak one word of complaint, for my punishment is from you.
Lord, don’t hit me anymore—I am exhausted beneath your hand.
When you punish a man for his sins, he is destroyed, for he is as fragile as a moth-infested cloth; yes, man is frail as breath.
Hear my prayer, O Lord; listen to my cry! Don’t sit back, unmindful of my tears. For I am your guest. I am a traveler passing through the earth, as all my fathers were.
Spare me, Lord! Let me recover and be filled with happiness again before my death.
I’m determined to watch steps and tongue so they won’t land me in trouble. I decided to hold my tongue as long as Wicked is in the room. “Mum’s the word,” I said, and kept quiet. But the longer I kept silence The worse it got— my insides got hotter and hotter. My thoughts boiled over; I spilled my guts.
“Tell me, what’s going on, God? How long do I have to live? Give me the bad news! You’ve kept me on pretty short rations; my life is a string too short to be saved. Oh! we’re all puffs of air. Oh! we’re all shadows in a campfire. Oh! we’re just spit in the wind. We make our pile, and then we leave it.
“What am I doing in the meantime, Lord? Hoping, that’s what I’m doing—hoping You’ll save me from a rebel life, save me from the contempt of idiots. I’ll say no more, I’ll shut my mouth, since you, Lord, are behind all this. But I can’t take it much longer. When you put us through the fire to purge us from our sin, our dearest idols go up in smoke. Are we also nothing but smoke?
“Ah, God, listen to my prayer, my cry—open your ears. Don’t be callous; just look at these tears of mine. I’m a stranger here. I don’t know my way— a migrant like my whole family. Give me a break, cut me some slack before it’s too late and I’m out of here.”
For the Music Director. To Jeduthun. A Psalm of David. I said, “I will take heed of my ways so that I do not sin with my tongue; I will keep my mouth muzzled while the wicked are before me.”
I was speechless in silence; I was silent to no avail, but my anguish was stirred up.
My heart was hot within me; while I was musing, the fire burned, then I spoke with my tongue:
Lord, make me to know my end, and what is the measure of my days, that I may know how transient I am.
Indeed, You have made my days as a handbreadth, and my age is as nothing before You; indeed every man at his best is as a breath.” Selah
Surely every man walks in a mere shadow; surely he goes as a breath; he heaps up riches, and does not know who will gather them.
Now, Lord, what do I wait for? My hope is in You.
Deliver me from all my transgressions; do not make me the reproach of the foolish.
I was speechless, I did not open my mouth, because You did it.
Remove Your blow from me; I am consumed by the hostility of Your hand.
When with rebukes You correct a man for iniquity, You consume like a moth what is dear to him; surely every man is vapor. Selah
Hear my prayer, O Lord, and give ear to my cry; do not be silent at my tears, for I am a stranger with You, and a sojourner, as all my fathers were.
Turn Your gaze of displeasure from me, that I may smile, before I go away and am no more.
“Teach me, O Yahweh, about the end of my life. Teach me about the number of days I have left so that I may know how temporary my life is.
Indeed, you have made the length of my days only a few inches. My life span is nothing compared to yours. Certainly, everyone alive is like a whisper in the wind. Selah
Each person who walks around is like a shadow. They are busy for no reason. They accumulate riches without knowing who will get them.”
And now, Adonay, what am I waiting for? My hope is in you!
Rescue me from all my rebellious acts. Do not disgrace me in front of godless fools.
I remained speechless. I did not open my mouth because you are the one who has done this.
Remove the sickness you laid upon me. My life is over because you struck me with your hand.
With stern warnings you discipline people for their crimes. Like a moth you eat away at what is dear to them. Certainly, everyone is like a whisper in the wind. Selah
Listen to my prayer, O Yahweh. Open your ear to my cry for help. Do not be deaf to my tears, for I am a foreign resident with you, a stranger like all my ancestors.
Look away from me so that I may smile again before I go away and am no more.
For the leader, for Jeduthun. A psalm of David.
I said, “I will watch my ways, lest I sin with my tongue; I will keep a muzzle on my mouth.”
Mute and silent before the wicked, I refrain from good things. But my sorrow increases;
my heart smolders within me. In my sighing a fire blazes up, and I break into speech:
Lord, let me know my end, the number of my days, that I may learn how frail I am.
To be sure, you establish the expanse of my days; indeed, my life is as nothing before you. Every man is but a breath. Selah
Man goes about as a mere phantom; they hurry about, although in vain; he heaps up stores without knowing for whom.
And now, Lord, for what do I wait? You are my only hope.
From all my sins deliver me; let me not be the taunt of fools.
I am silent and do not open my mouth because you are the one who did this.
Take your plague away from me; I am ravaged by the touch of your hand.
You chastise man with rebukes for sin; like a moth you consume his treasures. Every man is but a breath. Selah
Listen to my prayer, Lord, hear my cry; do not be deaf to my weeping! For I am with you like a foreigner, a refugee, like my ancestors.
Turn your gaze from me, that I may smile before I depart to be no more.
I said, “I will keep watch over my ways So that I do not sin with my tongue; I will keep watch over my mouth as with a muzzle While the wicked are in my presence.”
I was mute and silent, I refused to say even something good, And my pain was stirred up.
My heart was hot within me, While I was musing the fire burned; Then I spoke with my tongue:
Lord, let me know my end, And what is the extent of my days; Let me know how transient I am.
Behold, You have made my days like hand widths, And my lifetime as nothing in Your sight; Certainly all mankind standing is a mere breath. Selah
Certainly every person walks around as a fleeting shadow; They certainly make an uproar for nothing; He amasses riches and does not know who will gather them.
“And now, Lord, for what do I wait? My hope is in You.
Save me from all my wrongdoings; Do not make me an object of reproach for the foolish.
I have become mute, I do not open my mouth, Because it is You who have done it.
Remove Your plague from me; Because of the opposition of Your hand I am perishing.
With rebukes You punish a person for wrongdoing; You consume like a moth what is precious to him; Certainly all mankind is mere breath! Selah
“Hear my prayer, Lord, and listen to my cry for help; Do not be silent to my tears; For I am a stranger with You, One who lives abroad, like all my fathers.
Turn Your eyes away from me, that I may become cheerful again Before I depart and am no more.”
I said, “I will guard my ways That I may not sin with my tongue; I will guard my mouth as with a muzzle While the wicked are in my presence.”
I was mute and silent, I refrained even from good, And my sorrow grew worse.

For the director. For Jeduthun. A psalm of David.
I said, “I will be careful of my behavior so as not to sin with my tongue. I will keep a muzzle on my mouth whenever the wicked are in my presence.”
I kept completely silent and refrained from speech, but my distress only increased.
My heart smoldered within me, and, as I pondered, my mind was inflamed, and my tongue began to speak:
“O Lord, let me know my end and the number of days left to me; show me how fleeting my life is.
You have allotted me a short span of days; my life is as nothing in your sight; human existence is a mere breath. Selah
Humans are nothing but a passing shadow; the riches they amass are a mere breath, and they do not know who will enjoy them.
“So now, O Lord, what do I wait for? My hope is in you.
Deliver me from all my sins; do not subject me to the taunts of fools.
“I was silent and did not open my mouth, for it is you who have done it.
Remove your scourge from me; I am crushed by the blows of your hand.
You rebuke and punish people for their sins; like a moth you consume all their desires; human existence is a mere puff of wind. Selah
“Hear my prayer, O Lord; do not be deaf to my cry or ignore my weeping. For I am a wayfarer before you, a nomad like all my ancestors.
Turn your eyes away so that I may be glad before I depart and am no more.”
For the director of music. For Jeduthun. A psalm of David. I said, “I will be careful how I act and will not sin by what I say. I will be careful what I say around wicked people.”
So I kept very quiet. I didn’t even say anything good, but I became even more upset.

For the music director, Jeduthun; a psalm of David. I decided, “I will watch what I say and make sure I do not sin with my tongue. I will put a muzzle over my mouth while in the presence of an evil person.”
I was stone silent; I held back the urge to speak. My frustration grew;
my anxiety intensified. As I thought about it, I became impatient. Finally I spoke these words:
“O Lord, help me understand my mortality and the brevity of life. Let me realize how quickly my life will pass.
Look, you make my days short-lived, and my life span is nothing from your perspective. Surely all people, even those who seem secure, are nothing but vapor. (Selah)
Surely people go through life as mere ghosts. Surely they accumulate worthless wealth without knowing who will eventually haul it away.”
But now, O Lord, upon what am I relying? You are my only hope!
Deliver me from all my sins of rebellion. Do not make me the object of fools’ insults.
I am silent and cannot open my mouth because of what you have done.
Please stop wounding me. You have almost beaten me to death.
You severely discipline people for their sins; like a moth you slowly devour their strength. Surely all people are a mere vapor. (Selah)
Hear my prayer, O Lord. Listen to my cry for help. Do not ignore my sobbing. For I am a resident foreigner with you, a temporary settler, just as all my ancestors were.
Turn your angry gaze away from me, so I can be happy before I pass away.
For the director of music. For Jeduthun. A psalm of David. I said, “I will be careful about how I live. I will not sin by what I say. I will keep my mouth closed when I am near sinful people.”
So I was completely silent. I didn’t even say anything good. But the pain inside me grew worse.
My heart was deeply troubled. As I thought about what was happening to me, I became even more troubled. Then I spoke out.
I said, “Lord, show me when my life will end. Show me how many days I have left. Tell me how short my life will be.
You have given me only a few days to live. My whole life doesn’t seem like anything to you. No one lasts any longer than a breath. This is true even for those who feel secure.
People are only shadows as they go here and there. They rush around, but it doesn’t mean anything. They pile up wealth, but they don’t know who will finally get it.
“Lord, what can I look forward to now? You are the only hope I have.
Save me from all the wrong things I’ve done. Don’t let foolish people make fun of me.
I keep silent. I don’t open my mouth. You are the one who has caused all this to happen.
Please stop beating me. I’m about to die from the blows of your hand.
You correct and punish people for their sin. Then, just as a moth eats cloth, you destroy their wealth. No one lasts any longer than a breath.
Lord, hear my prayer. Listen to my cry for help. Pay attention to my weeping. I’m like an outsider in your home. I’m just a stranger, like all my family who lived before me.
Leave me alone. Let me enjoy life again before I die.”
I said, “I will watch my ways and keep my tongue from sin; I will put a muzzle on my mouth while in the presence of the wicked.”
So I remained utterly silent, not even saying anything good. But my anguish increased;
my heart grew hot within me. While I meditated, the fire burned; then I spoke with my tongue:
“Show me, Lord, my life’s end and the number of my days; let me know how fleeting my life is.
You have made my days a mere handbreadth; the span of my years is as nothing before you. Everyone is but a breath, even those who seem secure.
“Surely everyone goes around like a mere phantom; in vain they rush about, heaping up wealth without knowing whose it will finally be.
“But now, Lord, what do I look for? My hope is in you.
Save me from all my transgressions; do not make me the scorn of fools.
I was silent; I would not open my mouth, for you are the one who has done this.

I said, “I will watch my ways so I may not sin with my tongue. I will keep my mouth shut as if it were tied with ropes, while the sinful are near me.”
I stayed quiet, not even saying anything good. And my sorrow grew worse.
My heart was hot within me. As I thought about things, the fire burned. Then I spoke with my tongue,
“O Lord, let me know my end and how many days I have to live. Let me know that I do not have long to stay here.
You have made each of my days as long as a hand is wide. My whole life is nothing in Your eyes. Every man at his best is only a breath.
Every man walks here and there like a shadow. He makes a noise about nothing. He stores up riches, not knowing who will gather them.
And now, Lord, what do I wait for? My hope is in You.
Save me from all my sins. Do not let me be put to shame by the foolish.
I cannot speak. I do not open my mouth because it is You Who has done it.
Do not punish me any more. I am growing weak by the beatings of Your hand.
With sharp words You punish a man for sin. You destroy like a moth what is of worth to him. For sure, every man is only a breath.
O Lord, hear my prayer, and listen to my cry. Do not be quiet when You see my tears. For I am a stranger with You, a visitor like all my fathers.
Look away from me, so I may have joy again before I go and am no more.”
For Jeduthun, the choir director: A psalm of David. I said to myself, “I will watch what I do and not sin in what I say. I will hold my tongue when the ungodly are around me.”
But as I stood there in silence— not even speaking of good things— the turmoil within me grew worse.
The more I thought about it, the hotter I got, igniting a fire of words:
Lord, remind me how brief my time on earth will be. Remind me that my days are numbered— how fleeting my life is.
You have made my life no longer than the width of my hand. My entire lifetime is just a moment to you; at best, each of us is but a breath.” Interlude
We are merely moving shadows, and all our busy rushing ends in nothing. We heap up wealth, not knowing who will spend it.
And so, Lord, where do I put my hope? My only hope is in you.
Rescue me from my rebellion. Do not let fools mock me.
I am silent before you; I won’t say a word, for my punishment is from you.
But please stop striking me! I am exhausted by the blows from your hand.
When you discipline us for our sins, you consume like a moth what is precious to us. Each of us is but a breath. Interlude
Hear my prayer, O Lord! Listen to my cries for help! Don’t ignore my tears. For I am your guest— a traveler passing through, as my ancestors were before me.
Leave me alone so I can smile again before I am gone and exist no more.
To the leader: to Jeduthun. A Psalm of David. I said, ‘I will guard my ways that I may not sin with my tongue; I will keep a muzzle on my mouth as long as the wicked are in my presence.’

(For the one directing, even to Yedutun. Mizmor Dovid). I said, I will be shomer over my ways, that I sin not with my leshon; I will be shomer over my mouth with a muzzle, while the rashah is before me.
I was dumb with silence, I held my peace for the sake of tov; and my distress grew severe.
My lev became hot within me; while I was musing the eish burned; then I spoke with my leshon,
Hashem, make me to know mine end, and the measure of my yamim, what it is; that I may have da’as of how chadel (fleeting, frail) I am.
Hinei, Thou hast made my yamim as a handbreadth, and mine lifespan is as nothing before Thee; verily kol adam stand as kol hevel (altogether vanity). Selah.
Surely every ish walketh in a tzel (shadow); surely they are in turmoil in vain; he heapeth up riches, and hath no da’as of who shall gather them.
And now, Adonoi, what do I wait for? My hope is in Thee.
Save me from all my peysha’im; make me not the reproach of the foolish.
I was silent, I opened not my mouth; because Atah (Thou) did it.
Remove Thy nega (stroke, scourge) away from me; I am consumed by the blow of Thine yad.
When Thou with rebukes dost correct man for avon (iniquity), Thou makest his beauty to consume away like a moth: surely kol adam are hevel (vanity). Selah.
Hear my tefillah, Hashem, and give ear unto my cry; hold not Thy peace at my weeping; for I am a ger with Thee, and a sojourner, as were all my Avot.
O spare me from Thy frown, that I may recover strength, before I depart, v’eineni (and I be no more). [T.N. Animal sacrifices cannot take away sin; they are only a shadow of the korban nefesh of Moshiach. See Ps 40 and MJ chp 10; Isa 53:10.]
I thought, “I will guard my ways, so that I do not sin with my tongue. I will keep my mouth bridled while the wicked are in my sight.
I was dumb and spoke nothing. I kept silent, even from good; and my sorrow was more stirred.
My heart was hot within me. While I was musing, the fire kindled and I spoke with my tongue:
“LORD, let me know my end, and the measure of my days, what it is. Let me know how long I have to live.”
Behold, You have made my days as a handbreadth and my age as nothing in Your sight. Surely, every man is altogether vanity in his best state. Selah.
Doubtless, man walks in a shadow, and disquiets himself pointlessly. He heaps up riches and cannot tell who shall gather them.
And now LORD, for what do I wait? My hope is even in You.
Deliver me from all my transgressions, and do not make me a rebuke to the foolish.
I should have been dumb, and not have opened my mouth, because You did it.
Take Your plague away from me; for I am consumed by the stroke of Your hand.
When, with rebukes, You chastise man for iniquity, You make his beauty melt away as a moth. Surely, every man is vanity. Selah.
Hear my prayer, O LORD; and hear my cry. Do not keep silent at my tears; for I am a stranger with You and a sojourner, as all my fathers.
Keep Your anger from me, so that I may recover my strength before I go away and am no more. To him who excels: A Psalm of David.

For the music director, for Jeduthun, a psalm of David.
I said: “I will guard my ways, so I will not sin with my tongue. I will muzzle my mouth while the wicked are before me.”
So I became utterly speechless, kept silent even from good, but my anguish was stirred up.
My heart was hot within me, while I was musing, the fire burned. Then I spoke with my tongue:
“Let me know, Adonai, my end and what the number of my days is. Let me know how short-lived I am.
Behold, You made my days mere hand-breadths, and my lifetime as nothing before You. Surely all humanity is but vapor. Selah
Everyone goes about as a mere phantom. Surely they are making an uproar in vain, heaping up stuff— yet not knowing who will gather it.
And now, my Lord, what do I wait for? My hope is in You.
Deliver me from all my transgressions. Do not make me the scorn of a fool.
I am speechless, not opening my mouth —for You have done it.
Remove Your scourge from me. I perish by the blow of Your hand.
With rebukes You chasten one for iniquity and You consume like a moth what he finds pleasure in. Surely all humanity is but a vapor. Selah
Hear my prayer, Adonai, and listen to my cry— do not keep silent at my tears. For with You I am an outsider, a sojourner, as all my fathers were.
Turn your gaze away from me, so I may smile again, before I go, and am no more.”
For the worship leader, Jeduthun. A song of David. I promised, “I’ll be careful on life’s journey not to sin with my words; I’ll seal my lips when wicked people are around.”
I kept my mouth shut; I had nothing to say—not even anything good— which came to grieve me more and more.
I felt my heart become hot inside me as I thought on these things; a fire ignited and burned. Then I said,
“Eternal One, let me understand my end and how brief my earthly existence is; help me realize my life is fleeting.
You have determined the length of my days, and my life is nothing compared to You. Even the longest life is only a breath.” [pause]
In truth, each of us journeys through life like a shadow. We busy ourselves accomplishing nothing, piling up assets we can never keep; We can’t even know who will end up with those things.
In light of all this, Lord, what am I really waiting for? You are my hope.
Keep me from all the wrong I would do; don’t let the foolish laugh at me.
I am quiet; I keep my mouth closed because this has come from You.
Take Your curse from me; I can’t endure Your punishment.
You discipline us for our sins. Like a moth, You consume everything we treasure; it’s evident we are merely a breath. [pause]
Hear me, O Eternal One; listen to my pleading, and don’t ignore my tears Because I am estranged from You— a wanderer like my fathers before me.
Look away from me so I might have a chance to recover my joy and smile again before I lay this life down and am no more.
For the Chief Musician. For Jeduthun. A Psalm by David. I said, “I will watch my ways, so that I don’t sin with my tongue. I will keep my mouth with a bridle while the wicked is before me.”
I was mute with silence. I held my peace, even from good. My sorrow was stirred.
My heart was hot within me. While I meditated, the fire burned. I spoke with my tongue:
“Yahweh, show me my end, what is the measure of my days. Let me know how frail I am.
Behold, you have made my days hand widths. My lifetime is as nothing before you. Surely every man stands as a breath.” Selah.
“Surely every man walks like a shadow. Surely they busy themselves in vain. He heaps up, and doesn’t know who shall gather.
Now, Lord, what do I wait for? My hope is in you.
Deliver me from all my transgressions. Don’t make me the reproach of the foolish.
I was mute. I didn’t open my mouth, because you did it.
Remove your scourge away from me. I am overcome by the blow of your hand.
When you rebuke and correct man for iniquity, you consume his wealth like a moth. Surely every man is but a breath.” Selah.
“Hear my prayer, Yahweh, and give ear to my cry. Don’t be silent at my tears. For I am a stranger with you, a foreigner, as all my fathers were.
Oh spare me, that I may recover strength, before I go away and exist no more.”
For victory, to Jeduthun, the psalm of David. I said, I shall keep my ways; that I trespass not in my tongue. I setted keeping to my mouth; when a sinner stood against me. (To victory, to Jeduthun, the song of David. I said, I shall keep watch over my ways; so that I do not trespass with my tongue. And I guarded my mouth; when a sinner stood against me.)
I was dumb, and I was meeked full greatly, and was still, (even) from goods; and my sorrow was renewed. (I was dumb, and was very greatly humbled, and I was silent, even about good things; and so my sorrow was renewed.)
Mine heart was hot within me; and fire shall burn out in my thinking. I spake in my tongue; (My heart was hot within me; and the fire burned forever as I thought about all this. And then I said with my tongue,)
Lord, make thou mine end known to me. And the number of my days, what it is; that I know, what faileth to me (so that I know what falleth to me/so that I know when I shall fail, or die).
Lo! thou hast set my days measurable; and my substance is as nought before thee. Nevertheless all vanity; each man living. (Lo! thou hast made my days able to be measured, or counted; and my substance is like but nothing before thee, yea, but a puff of air. And all is emptiness, or uselessness; for each person alive.)
Nevertheless a man passeth in an image; but also he is troubled vainly. He treasureth; and he know not, to whom he shall gather those things. (And a person passeth by like a shadow; and he travaileth, or laboureth, in vain, that is, he worketh for nothing. For he buildeth up treasure; yet he truly knoweth not, for whom he gathered those things.)
And now which is mine abiding? whether not the Lord? and my substance is at thee. (And now, who do I wait for? is it not for the Lord? yea, for my hope is in thee.)
Deliver thou me from all my wickednesses; thou hast given me (as a) shame to the unknowing. (Rescue thou me/Save thou me from all of my wickednesses; thou hast made me a shame, or a reproach, to the ignorant.)
I was dumb, and opened not my mouth; for thou hast made (this happen), (But I was dumb, and did not open my mouth; for thou hast done this.)
remove thou thy wounds from me. From the strength of thine hand I failed in blamings; (Cease thou from wounding me; for I am failing from the strokes of thy hand.)
for wickedness thou hast chastised [a] man. And thou madest his life to fail as a spider; nevertheless each man is troubled in vain. (For when thou hast chastised someone for wickedness, thou hast destroyed his life; yea, like a moth that eateth up a piece of cloth. Nevertheless, each person is troubled over nothing anyway, for his life is nothing but emptiness.)
Lord, hear thou my prayer, and my beseeching; perceive thou with ears my tears. Be thou not still, for I am a comeling with thee; and a pilgrim, as all my fathers. (Lord, hear thou my prayer; and listen to my plea. Be thou not silent before my tears, for I am but a newcomer, or a visitor, here with thee; yea, a pilgrim, like all my forefathers were before me.)
Forgive thou to me, that I be refreshed, before that I go; and I shall no more be. (Forgive thou me, so that I can be refreshed, before that I go away; and then I shall be no more.)
To the Overseer, to Jeduthun. -- A Psalm of David. I have said, `I observe my ways, Against sinning with my tongue, I keep for my mouth a curb, while the wicked [is] before me.'
I was dumb [with] silence, I kept silent from good, and my pain is excited.
Hot [is] my heart within me, In my meditating doth the fire burn, I have spoken with my tongue.
`Cause me to know, O Jehovah, mine end, And the measure of my days -- what it [is],' I know how frail I [am].
Lo, handbreadths Thou hast made my days, And mine age [is] as nothing before Thee, Only, all vanity [is] every man set up. Selah.
Only, in an image doth each walk habitually, Only, [in] vain, they are disquieted, He heapeth up and knoweth not who gathereth them.
And, now, what have I expected? O Lord, my hope -- it [is] of Thee.
From all my transgressions deliver me, A reproach of the fool make me not.
I have been dumb, I open not my mouth, Because Thou -- Thou hast done [it].
Turn aside from off me Thy stroke, From the striving of Thy hand I have been consumed.
With reproofs against iniquity, Thou hast corrected man, And dost waste as a moth his desirableness, Only, vanity [is] every man. Selah.
Hear my prayer, O Jehovah, And [to] my cry give ear, Unto my tear be not silent, For a sojourner I [am] with Thee, A settler like all my fathers.
Look from me, and I brighten up before I go and am not!
