1 Corinthians 10:23
Print
All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient. All things are lawful for me, but all things do not edify.
All things are lawful; but not all things are expedient. All things are lawful; but not all things edify.
All things are lawful [that is, morally legitimate, permissible], but not all things are beneficial or advantageous. All things are lawful, but not all things are constructive [to character] and edifying [to spiritual life].
All things are legitimate [permissible—and we are free to do anything we please], but not all things are helpful (expedient, profitable, and wholesome). All things are legitimate, but not all things are constructive [to character] and edifying [to spiritual life].
All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.
“Everything is permissible,” but not everything is beneficial. “Everything is permissible,” but not everything builds up.
Everything is permitted, but everything isn’t beneficial. Everything is permitted, but everything doesn’t build others up.
“Everything is permitted,” you say? Maybe, but not everything is helpful. “Everything is permitted?” Maybe, but not everything is edifying.
Some of you say, “We can do whatever we want to!” But I tell you not everything may be good or helpful.
All things are lawful, but all are not profitable; all things are lawful, but all do not edify.
All things are lawful, but not all things are beneficial. All things are lawful, but not all things build-up.
All things are lawful for me, but all things do not edify.
“All things are allowed,” you say. But not all things are good. “All things are allowed.” But some things don’t help anyone.
Some of you may say, ‘We are free to do anything that we want to do!’ But not everything is good for you to do. You may say, ‘We are free to do anything!’ But not everything helps you to be strong as a believer.
“Everything is permitted”—but not everything is beneficial. “Everything is permitted”—but not everything builds up.
“All things are lawful,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful,” but not all things build up.
“All things are lawful”, but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful”, but not all things build up.
“·We are allowed to do all things [L All things are lawful/permissible],” but not all things are ·good for us to do [profitable; beneficial]. “·We are allowed to do all things [L All things are lawful/permissible],” but not all things ·help others grow stronger [L build up; C the quotations were probably slogans the Corinthians used; 6:12, 13; 7:1; 8:1, 4].
All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.
Someone may say, “I’m allowed to do anything,” but not everything is helpful. I’m allowed to do anything, but not everything encourages growth.
“We are allowed to do anything,” so they say. That is true, but not everything is good. “We are allowed to do anything”—but not everything is helpful.
“Everything is permissible,” but not everything is helpful. “Everything is permissible,” but not everything builds up.
“We are allowed to do all things.” Yes. But not all things are good for us to do. “We are allowed to do all things.” Yes. But not all things help others grow stronger.
Everything is permissible, but not everything is helpful. Everything is permissible, but not everything builds up.
As I have said before, the Christian position is this: I may do anything, but everything is not useful. Yes, I may do anything but everything is not constructive. Let no man, then, set his own advantage as his objective, but rather the good of his neighbour.
¶ All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient; all things are lawful for me, but all things do not edify.
All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.
All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.
All things are lawful, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful, but not all things build up.
All things are permitted, but not all things are profitable. All things are permitted, but not all things build up.
You are certainly free to eat food offered to idols if you want to; it’s not against God’s laws to eat such meat, but that doesn’t mean that you should go ahead and do it. It may be perfectly legal, but it may not be best and helpful.
Looking at it one way, you could say, “Anything goes. Because of God’s immense generosity and grace, we don’t have to dissect and scrutinize every action to see if it will pass muster.” But the point is not to just get by. We want to live well, but our foremost efforts should be to help others live well.
“All things are lawful for me,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful for me,” but not all things edify.
“All things are permissible,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are permissible,” but not all things build up.
Someone may say, “I’m allowed to do anything,” but not everything is helpful. I’m allowed to do anything, but not everything encourages growth.
“Everything is lawful,” but not everything is beneficial. “Everything is lawful,” but not everything builds up.
All things are permitted, but not all things are of benefit. All things are permitted, but not all things build people up.
All things are lawful, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful, but not all things edify.
“All things are lawful,” you may say—but not all things are beneficial. All things may be lawful—but not all things are constructive.
“We are allowed to do all things,” but not all things are good for us to do. “We are allowed to do all things,” but not all things help others grow stronger.
“Everything is lawful,” but not everything is beneficial. “Everything is lawful,” but not everything builds others up.
You say, “I have the right to do anything.” But not everything is helpful. Again you say, “I have the right to do anything.” But not everything builds us up.
“I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but not everything is constructive.
‘I have the right to do anything,’ you say – but not everything is beneficial. ‘I have the right to do anything’– but not everything is constructive.
All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful; all things are lawful for me, but not all things edify.
We are allowed to do anything, but not everything is good for us to do. We are allowed to do anything, but not all things help us grow strong as Christians.
You say, “I am allowed to do anything”—but not everything is good for you. You say, “I am allowed to do anything”—but not everything is beneficial.
All things are lawful to me, but all things do not edify.
‘All things are lawful’, but not all things are beneficial. ‘All things are lawful’, but not all things build up.
‘All things are lawful’, but not all things are beneficial. ‘All things are lawful’, but not all things build up.
“All things are lawful,” but not all things are beneficial. “All things are lawful,” but not all things build up.
“All things are permitted,” but not all things are beneficial. “All things are permitted,” but not all things build up.
“Everything is lawful,” but not everything is helpful. “Everything is lawful,” but not everything builds you up.
“All things are lawful”? But not all things are beneficial; “All things are lawful”? But not all things edify [6:12].
All things are lawful for me, but all things are not profitable. All things are lawful for me, but all things do not edify.
“All things are lawful,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful,” but not all things build up.
“All things are lawful,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful,” but not all things build up.
“Everything is permitted”—but not everything is helpful. “Everything is permitted”—but not everything builds up.
There’s a slogan often quoted on matters like this: “All things are permitted.” Yes, but not all things are beneficial. “All things are permitted,” they say. Yes, but not all things build up and strengthen others in the body.
“All things are lawful for me,” but not all things are profitable. “All things are lawful for me,” but not all things build up.
We are free to do anything we want to do. Yes, but some things do not make people better. It is better if we do not do such things.
All things be leaveful to me, but not all things be speedful. All things be leaveful to me, but not all things edify.
All things to me are lawful, but all things are not profitable; all things to me are lawful, but all things do not build up;
