43:1–45:28 Joseph’s ruse had already begun to move his brothers from indifference to integrity and loyalty toward one another (42:21, 22). This change is further manifested in Judah’s offer of himself as surety (43:9) and in his offer to sacrifice himself in Benjamin’s stead (44:33). Finally, Joseph makes himself known to his brothers and, seeing their sins in the light of God’s purpose, he forgives them (ch. 45).
