Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
Psalm 111[a]
111 Praise the Lord!
I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart,
in the assembly of the godly and the congregation.
2 The Lord’s deeds are great,
eagerly awaited[b] by all who desire them.
3 His work is majestic and glorious,[c]
and his faithfulness endures[d] forever.
4 He does[e] amazing things that will be remembered;[f]
the Lord is merciful and compassionate.
5 He gives[g] food to his faithful followers;[h]
he always remembers his covenant.[i]
6 He announced that he would do mighty deeds for his people,
giving them a land that belonged to other nations.[j]
7 His acts are characterized by[k] faithfulness and justice;
all his precepts are reliable.[l]
8 They are forever firm,
and should be faithfully and properly carried out.[m]
9 He delivered his people;[n]
he ordained that his covenant be observed forever.[o]
His name is holy and awesome.
10 To obey the Lord is the fundamental principle for wise living;[p]
all who carry out his precepts acquire good moral insight.[q]
He will receive praise forever.[r]
Denial to Moses of the Promised Land
23 Moreover, at that time I pleaded with the Lord, 24 “O, Sovereign Lord,[a] you have begun to show me[b] your greatness and strength.[c] (What god in heaven or earth can rival your works and mighty deeds?) 25 Let me please cross over to see the good land on the other side of the Jordan River—this good hill country and the Lebanon!”[d] 26 But the Lord was angry at me because of you and would not listen to me. Instead, he[e] said to me, “Enough of that![f] Do not speak to me anymore about this matter. 27 Go up to the top of Pisgah and take a good look to the west, north, south, and east,[g] for you will not be allowed to cross the Jordan. 28 Commission[h] Joshua, and encourage and strengthen him, because he will lead these people over and will enable them to inherit the land you will see.” 29 So we settled down in the valley opposite Beth Peor.[i]
6 It is not as though the word of God had failed. For not all those who are descended from Israel are truly Israel,[a] 7 nor are all the children Abraham’s true descendants; rather “through Isaac will your descendants be counted.”[b] 8 This means[c] it is not the children of the flesh[d] who are the children of God; rather, the children of promise are counted as descendants. 9 For this is what the promise declared:[e] “About a year from now[f] I will return and Sarah will have a son.”[g] 10 Not only that, but when Rebekah had conceived children by one man,[h] our ancestor Isaac— 11 even before they were born or had done anything good or bad (so that God’s purpose in election[i] would stand, not by works but by[j] his calling)[k]— 12 [l] it was said to her, “The older will serve the younger,”[m] 13 just as it is written: “Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.”[n]
14 What shall we say then? Is there injustice with God? Absolutely not! 15 For he says to Moses: “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.”[o] 16 So then,[p] it does not depend on human desire or exertion,[q] but on God who shows mercy. 17 For the scripture says to Pharaoh:[r] “For this very purpose I have raised you up, that I may demonstrate my power in you, and that my name may be proclaimed in all the earth.”[s] 18 So then,[t] God[u] has mercy on whom he chooses to have mercy, and he hardens whom he chooses to harden.[v]
