Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
BOOK FOUR
Psalms 90–106
The Eternity of God, and Man’s Frailty
A Prayer (A)of Moses the man of God.
90 Lord, (B)You have been our [a]dwelling place in all generations.
2 (C)Before the mountains were brought forth,
Or ever You [b]had formed the earth and the world,
Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.
3 You turn man to destruction,
And say, (D)“Return, O children of men.”
4 (E)For a thousand years in Your sight
Are like yesterday when it is past,
And like a watch in the night.
5 You carry them away like a flood;
(F)They are like a sleep.
In the morning (G)they are like grass which grows up:
6 In the morning it flourishes and grows up;
In the evening it is cut down and withers.
9 For all our days have passed away in Your wrath;
We finish our years like a sigh.
10 The days of our lives are seventy years;
And if by reason of strength they are eighty years,
Yet their boast is only labor and sorrow;
For it is soon cut off, and we fly away.
11 Who knows the power of Your anger?
For as the fear of You, so is Your wrath.
12 (A)So teach us to number our days,
That we may gain a heart of wisdom.
Judgment on Israel Is Near
7 Moreover the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 2 “And you, son of man, thus says the Lord God to the land of Israel:
(A)‘An end! The end has come upon the four corners of the land.
3 Now the end has come upon you,
And I will send My anger against you;
I will judge you (B)according to your ways,
And I will repay you for all your abominations.
4 (C)My eye will not spare you,
Nor will I have pity;
But I will repay your ways,
And your abominations will be in your midst;
(D)Then you shall know that I am the Lord!’
5 “Thus says the Lord God:
‘A disaster, a singular (E)disaster;
Behold, it has come!
6 An end has come,
The end has come;
It has dawned for you;
Behold, it has come!
7 (F)Doom has come to you, you who dwell in the land;
(G)The time has come,
A day of trouble is near,
And not of rejoicing in the mountains.
8 Now upon you I will soon (H)pour out My fury,
And spend My anger upon you;
I will judge you according to your ways,
And I will repay you for all your abominations.
9 ‘My eye will not spare,
Nor will I have pity;
I will [a]repay you according to your ways,
And your abominations will be in your midst.
Then you shall know that I am the Lord who strikes.
Fourth Bowl: Men Are Scorched
8 Then the fourth angel poured out his bowl (A)on the sun, (B)and power was given to him to scorch men with fire. 9 And men were scorched with great heat, and they (C)blasphemed the name of God who has power over these plagues; (D)and they did not repent (E)and give Him glory.
Fifth Bowl: Darkness and Pain
10 Then the fifth angel poured out his bowl (F)on the throne of the beast, (G)and his kingdom became full of darkness; (H)and they gnawed their tongues because of the pain. 11 They blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, and did not repent of their deeds.
Sixth Bowl: Euphrates Dried Up
12 Then the sixth angel poured out his bowl (I)on the great river Euphrates, (J)and its water was dried up, (K)so that the way of the kings from the east might be prepared. 13 And I saw three unclean (L)spirits like frogs coming out of the mouth of (M)the dragon, out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of (N)the false prophet. 14 For they are spirits of demons, (O)performing signs, which go out to the kings [a]of the earth and of (P)the whole world, to gather them to (Q)the battle of that great day of God Almighty.
15 (R)“Behold, I am coming as a thief. Blessed is he who watches, and keeps his garments, (S)lest he walk naked and they see his shame.”
16 (T)And they gathered them together to the place called in Hebrew, [b]Armageddon.
Seventh Bowl: The Earth Utterly Shaken
17 Then the seventh angel poured out his bowl into the air, and a loud voice came out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, (U)“It is done!” 18 And (V)there were noises and thunderings and lightnings; (W)and there was a great earthquake, such a mighty and great earthquake (X)as had not occurred since men were on the earth. 19 Now (Y)the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell. And (Z)great Babylon (AA)was remembered before God, (AB)to give her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of His wrath. 20 Then (AC)every island fled away, and the mountains were not found. 21 And great hail from heaven fell upon men, each hailstone about the weight of a talent. Men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail, since that plague was exceedingly great.
