Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
Save Me, O My God
A Psalm of David, (A)when he fled from Absalom his son.
3 O Lord, (B)how many are my foes!
Many are (C)rising against me;
2 many are saying of my soul,
(D)“There is no salvation for him in God.” Selah[a]
3 But you, O Lord, are (E)a shield (F)about me,
my glory, and (G)the lifter of my head.
4 I (H)cried aloud to the Lord,
and he (I)answered me from his (J)holy hill. Selah
5 I (K)lay down and slept;
I woke again, for the Lord sustained me.
6 I (L)will not be afraid of many thousands of people
who have (M)set themselves against me all around.
7 (N)Arise, O Lord!
Save me, O my God!
For you (O)strike all my enemies on the cheek;
you (P)break the teeth of the wicked.
8 (Q)Salvation belongs to the Lord;
your blessing be on your people! Selah
12 (A)“Woe to him (B)who builds a town with blood
and founds a city on iniquity!
13 Behold, is it not from the Lord of hosts
that (C)peoples labor merely for fire,
and nations weary themselves for nothing?
14 (D)For the earth will be filled
with the knowledge of (E)the glory of the Lord
as the waters cover the sea.
15 (F)“Woe to him (G)who makes his neighbors drink—
you pour out your wrath and make them drunk,
in order to gaze (H)at their nakedness!
16 You will have your fill (I)of shame instead of glory.
(J)Drink, yourself, and show your uncircumcision!
(K)The cup in the Lord's right hand
will come around to you,
and (L)utter shame will come upon your glory!
17 (M)The violence (N)done to Lebanon will overwhelm you,
as will the destruction of the beasts that terrified them,
(O)for the blood of man and violence to the earth,
to cities and all who dwell in them.
18 (P)“What profit is an idol
when its maker has shaped it,
a metal image, (Q)a teacher of lies?
For its maker trusts in his own creation
when he makes (R)speechless idols!
19 (S)Woe to him (T)who says to a wooden thing, Awake;
to a silent stone, Arise!
Can this teach?
Behold, it is overlaid with gold and silver,
and (U)there is no breath at all in it.
20 But (V)the Lord is in his holy temple;
(W)let all the earth keep silence before him.”
Jesus Curses the Fig Tree
12 (A)On the following day, when they came from Bethany, (B)he was hungry. 13 (C)And seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to see if he could find anything on it. When he came to it, he found nothing but leaves, for (D)it was not the season for figs. 14 And he said to it, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And his disciples heard it.
The Lesson from the Withered Fig Tree
20 (A)As they passed by in the morning, they saw the fig tree withered away to its roots. 21 And Peter remembered and said to him, (B)“Rabbi, look! The fig tree that you cursed has withered.” 22 And Jesus answered them, “Have (C)faith in God. 23 (D)Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, (E)‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not (F)doubt in his heart, but (G)believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him. 24 Therefore I tell you, (H)whatever you ask in prayer, (I)believe that you (J)have received[a] it, and it will be yours.
