Ecclesiastes 1:2

Introduction: Utter Futility

“Futile! Futile!” laments[a] the Teacher.[b]
“Absolutely futile![c] Everything[d] is futile!”[e]

Ecclesiastes 1:12-14

Futility of Secular Accomplishment

12 I, the Teacher, have been king over Israel in Jerusalem.
13 I decided[a] to carefully[b] and thoroughly examine[c]
all that has been accomplished on earth.[d]
I concluded:[e] God has given people[f] a burdensome task[g]
that keeps them[h] occupied.[i]
14 I reflected on everything that is accomplished by man[j] on earth,[k]
and I concluded: Everything[l] he has accomplished[m] is futile[n]—like chasing the wind![o]

Ecclesiastes 2:18-23

Futility of Being a Workaholic

18 So I loathed all the fruit of[a] my effort,[b]
for which I worked so hard[c] on earth,[d]
because[e] I must leave it[f] behind[g] in the hands of my successor.[h]
19 Who knows if he will be a wise man or a fool?
Yet[i] he will be master over all the fruit of[j] my labor[k]
for which I worked so wisely[l] on earth.[m]
This also is futile!
20 So I began to despair[n] about all the fruit of[o] my labor[p]
for which I worked so hard[q] on earth.[r]
21 For a man may do his work with wisdom, knowledge, and skill;
however, he must hand over[s] the fruit of his labor[t] as an inheritance[u]
to someone else who did not work for it.
This also is futile, and an awful injustice![v]

Painful Days and Restless Nights

22 What does a man acquire from all his labor
and from the anxiety that accompanies his toil on earth?[w]
23 For all day long[x] his work produces pain and frustration,[y]
and even at night his mind cannot relax.[z]
This also is futile!

Psalm 49:1-12

Psalm 49[a]

For the music director, a psalm by the Korahites.

49 Listen to this, all you nations.
Pay attention, all you inhabitants of the world.[b]
Pay attention, all you people,[c]
both rich and poor.
I will declare a wise saying;[d]
I will share my profound thoughts.[e]
I will learn a song that imparts wisdom;
I will then sing my insightful song to the accompaniment of a harp.[f]
Why should I be afraid in times of trouble,[g]
when the sinful deeds of deceptive men threaten to overwhelm me?[h]
They trust[i] in their wealth
and boast[j] in their great riches.
Certainly a man cannot rescue his brother;[k]
he cannot pay God an adequate ransom price[l]
(the ransom price for a human life[m] is too high,
and people go to their final destiny),[n]
so that he might continue to live[o] forever
and not experience death.[p]
10 Surely[q] one sees[r] that even wise people die;[s]
fools and spiritually insensitive people all pass away[t]
and leave their wealth to others.[u]
11 Their grave becomes their permanent residence,
their eternal dwelling place.[v]
They name their lands after themselves,[w]
12 but, despite their wealth, people do not last.[x]
They are like animals[y] that perish.[z]

Colossians 3:1-11

Exhortations to Seek the Things Above

Therefore, if you have been raised with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Keep thinking about things above, not things on the earth, for you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ (who is your[a] life) appears, then you too will be revealed in glory with him. So put to death whatever in your nature belongs to the earth:[b] sexual immorality, impurity, shameful passion,[c] evil desire, and greed which is idolatry. Because of these things the wrath of God is coming on the sons of disobedience.[d] You also lived your lives[e] in this way at one time, when you used to live among them. But now, put off all such things[f] as anger, rage, malice, slander, abusive language from your mouth. Do not lie to one another since you have put off the old man with its practices 10 and have been clothed with the new man[g] that is being renewed in knowledge according to the image of the one who created it. 11 Here there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave[h] or free, but Christ is all and in all.

Luke 12:13-21

The Parable of the Rich Landowner

13 Then[a] someone from the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell[b] my brother to divide the inheritance with me.” 14 But Jesus[c] said to him, “Man,[d] who made me a judge or arbitrator between you two?”[e] 15 Then[f] he said to them, “Watch out and guard yourself from[g] all types of greed,[h] because one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” 16 He then[i] told them a parable:[j] “The land of a certain rich man produced[k] an abundant crop, 17 so[l] he thought to himself,[m] ‘What should I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?’[n] 18 Then[o] he said, ‘I[p] will do this: I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. 19 And I will say to myself,[q] “You have plenty of goods stored up for many years; relax, eat, drink, celebrate!”’ 20 But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life[r] will be demanded back from[s] you, but who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’[t] 21 So it is with the one who stores up riches for himself,[u] but is not rich toward God.”
