Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
God’s Omnipresence and Omniscience.
For the choir director. A Psalm of David.
139 O Lord, You have (A)searched me and known me.
2 You (B)know [a]when I sit down and [b]when I rise up;
You (C)understand my thought from afar.
3 You [c](D)scrutinize my [d]path and my lying down,
And are intimately acquainted with all my ways.
4 [e]Even before there is a word on my tongue,
Behold, O Lord, You (E)know it all.
5 You have (F)enclosed me behind and before,
And (G)laid Your hand upon me.
6 Such (H)knowledge is (I)too wonderful for me;
It is too high, I cannot attain to it.
7 (J)Where can I go from Your Spirit?
Or where can I flee from Your presence?
8 (K)If I ascend to heaven, You are there;
If I make my bed in [f]Sheol, behold, (L)You are there.
9 If I take the wings of the dawn,
If I dwell in the remotest part of the sea,
10 Even there Your hand will (M)lead me,
And Your right hand will lay hold of me.
11 If I say, “Surely the (N)darkness will [g]overwhelm me,
And the light around me will be night,”
12 Even the (O)darkness is not dark [h]to You,
And the night is as bright as the day.
(P)Darkness and light are alike to You.
13 For You (Q)formed my [i]inward parts;
You (R)wove me in my mother’s womb.
14 I will give thanks to You, for [j]I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
(S)Wonderful are Your works,
And my soul knows it very well.
15 My [k](T)frame was not hidden from You,
When I was made in secret,
And skillfully wrought in the (U)depths of the earth;
16 Your (V)eyes have seen my unformed substance;
And in (W)Your book were all written
The (X)days that were ordained for me,
When as yet there was not one of them.
4 Now the word of the Lord came to me saying,
5 “Before I (A)formed you in the womb I knew you,
And (B)before you were born I consecrated you;
I have (C)appointed you a prophet to the nations.”
6 Then (D)I said, “Alas, Lord [a]God!
Behold, I do not know how to speak,
Because (E)I am a youth.”
7 But the Lord said to me,
“Do not say, ‘I am a youth,’
(F)Because everywhere I send you, you shall go,
And (G)all that I command you, you shall speak.
8 “(H)Do not be afraid of them,
For (I)I am with you to deliver you,” declares the Lord.
9 Then the Lord stretched out His hand and (J)touched my mouth, and the Lord said to me,
21 Then He said again to them, “I go away, and (A)you will seek Me, and (B)will die in your sin; where I am going, you cannot come.” 22 So (C)the Jews were saying, “Surely He will not kill Himself, will He, since He says, ‘(D)Where I am going, you cannot come’?” 23 And He was saying to them, “(E)You are from below, I am from above; (F)you are of this world, (G)I am not of this world. 24 Therefore I said to you that you (H)will die in your sins; for unless you believe that [a](I)I am He, (J)you will die in your sins.” 25 So they were saying to Him, “Who are You?” Jesus said to them, “[b]What have I been saying to you from the beginning? 26 I have many things to speak and to judge concerning you, but (K)He who sent Me is true; and (L)the things which I heard from Him, these I speak to the world.” 27 They did not realize that He had been speaking to them about the Father. 28 So Jesus said, “When you (M)lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that [c](N)I am He, and (O)I do nothing on My own initiative, but I speak these things as the Father taught Me. 29 And He who sent Me is with Me; (P)He [d]has not left Me alone, for (Q)I always do the things that are pleasing to Him.” 30 As He spoke these things, (R)many came to believe in Him.
The Truth Will Make You Free
31 So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, “(S)If you continue in My word, then you are truly (T)disciples of Mine; 32 and (U)you will know the truth, and (V)the truth will make you free.” 33 They answered Him, “(W)We are Abraham’s descendants and have never yet been enslaved to anyone; how is it that You say, ‘You will become free’?”
34 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, (X)everyone who commits sin is the slave of sin. 35 (Y)The slave does not remain in the house forever; (Z)the son does remain forever. 36 So if the Son (AA)makes you free, you will be free indeed. 37 I know that you are (AB)Abraham’s descendants; yet (AC)you seek to kill Me, because My word [e]has no place in you. 38 I speak the things which I have seen [f]with My Father; therefore you also do the things which you heard from (AD)your father.”
