Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
23 You loyal followers of the Lord,[a] praise him.
All you descendants of Jacob, honor him.
All you descendants of Israel, stand in awe of him.[b]
24 For he did not despise or detest the suffering[c] of the oppressed.[d]
He did not ignore him;[e]
when he cried out to him, he responded.[f]
25 You are the reason I offer praise[g] in the great assembly;
I will fulfill my promises before the Lord’s loyal followers.[h]
26 Let the oppressed eat and be filled.[i]
Let those who seek his help praise the Lord.
May you[j] live forever!
27 Let all the people of the earth acknowledge the Lord and turn to him.[k]
Let all the nations[l] worship you.[m]
28 For the Lord is king[n]
and rules over the nations.
29 All the thriving people[o] of the earth will join the celebration and worship;[p]
all those who are descending into the grave[q] will bow before him,
including those who cannot preserve their lives.[r]
30 A whole generation[s] will serve him;
they will tell the next generation about the Lord.[t]
31 They will come and tell about his saving deeds;[u]
they will tell a future generation what he has accomplished.[v]
7 The angel of the Lord[a] found Hagar near a spring of water in the wilderness—the spring that is along the road to Shur.[b] 8 He said, “Hagar, servant of Sarai, where have you come from, and where are you going?” She replied, “I’m running away from[c] my mistress, Sarai.”
9 Then the angel of the Lord said to her, “Return to your mistress and submit[d] to her authority. 10 I will greatly multiply your descendants,” the angel of the Lord added,[e] “so that they will be too numerous to count.”[f] 11 Then the angel of the Lord said to her,
“You are now[g] pregnant
and are about to give birth[h] to a son.
You are to name him Ishmael,[i]
for the Lord has heard your painful groans.[j]
12 He will be a wild donkey[k] of a man.
He will be hostile to everyone,[l]
and everyone will be hostile to him.[m]
He will live away from[n] his brothers.”
13 So Hagar named the Lord who spoke to her, “You are the God who sees me,”[o] for she said, “Here I have seen one who sees me!”[p] 14 That is why the well was called[q] Beer Lahai Roi.[r] (It is located[s] between Kadesh and Bered.)
15 So Hagar gave birth to Abram’s son, whom Abram named Ishmael.[t]
Peter’s Confession
27 Then Jesus and his disciples went to the villages of Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked his disciples,[a] “Who do people say that I am?” 28 They said,[b] “John the Baptist, others say Elijah,[c] and still others, one of the prophets.” 29 He asked them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered him,[d] “You are the Christ.”[e] 30 Then[f] he warned them not to tell anyone about him.[g]
