Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
Psalm 130[a]
A song of ascents.[b]
130 From the deep water[c] I cry out to you, O Lord.
2 O Lord, listen to me.[d]
Pay attention to[e] my plea for mercy.
3 If you, O Lord, were to keep track of[f] sins,
O Lord, who could stand before you?[g]
4 But[h] you are willing to forgive,[i]
so that you might[j] be honored.[k]
5 I rely on[l] the Lord.
I rely on him with my whole being;[m]
I wait for his assuring word.[n]
6 I yearn for the Lord,[o]
more than watchmen do for the morning,
yes, more than watchmen do for the morning.[p]
7 O Israel, hope in the Lord,
for the Lord exhibits loyal love,[q]
and is more than willing to deliver.[r]
8 He will deliver[s] Israel
from all their sins.[t]
8 “‘But you, mountains of Israel, will grow your branches and bear your fruit for my people Israel, for they will arrive soon.[a] 9 For indeed, I am on your side;[b] I will turn to you, and you will be plowed and planted. 10 I will multiply your people[c]—the whole house of Israel, all of it. The cities will be populated and the ruins rebuilt. 11 I will increase the number of people and animals on you; they will increase and be fruitful.[d] I will cause you to be inhabited as in ancient times and will do more good for you than at the beginning of your history.[e] Then you will know that I am the Lord. 12 I will lead people, my people Israel, across you; they will possess you, and you will become their inheritance. No longer will you bereave them of their children.
13 “‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Because they are saying to you, “You are a devourer of men and bereave your nation of children,” 14 therefore you will no longer devour people and no longer bereave your nation of children, declares the Sovereign Lord. 15 I will no longer subject you to[f] the nations’ insults; no longer will you bear the shame of the peoples, and no longer will you bereave[g] your nation, declares the Sovereign Lord.’”
Jesus’ Final Commission
44 Then[a] he said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me[b] in the law of Moses and the prophets and the psalms[c] must be fulfilled.” 45 Then he opened their minds so they could understand the scriptures,[d] 46 and said to them, “Thus it stands written that the Christ[e] would suffer[f] and would rise from the dead on the third day, 47 and repentance[g] for the forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed[h] in his name to all nations,[i] beginning from Jerusalem.[j] 48 You are witnesses[k] of these things. 49 And look, I am sending you[l] what my Father promised.[m] But stay in the city[n] until you have been clothed with power[o] from on high.”
Jesus’ Departure
50 Then[p] Jesus[q] led them out as far as Bethany,[r] and lifting up his hands, he blessed them. 51 Now[s] during the blessing[t] he departed[u] and was taken up into heaven.[v] 52 So[w] they worshiped[x] him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy,[y] 53 and were continually in the temple courts[z] blessing[aa] God.[ab]
