Deuteronomy 16

Chapter 16

Feast of the Passover.[a] Observe the month of Abib,[b] and celebrate the Passover of the Lord, your God, for in the month of Abib the Lord, your God, brought you forth from Egypt during the night. Make a Passover sacrifice from your flock or your herd to the Lord, your God, in the place where the Lord has chosen to place his name. Do not eat leavened bread, but eat unleavened bread for seven days. This is the bread of affliction, for you had to leave the land of Egypt in haste. Thus, all of your life you will remember the day that you came forth from Egypt. There should be no leavened bread in your entire land for seven days. Do not let any of the meat of the sacrifice that was made on the first evening remain until the next morning. [c]You are not to make the Passover sacrifice in any of the towns that the Lord, your God, has given you. Do it only in the place that the Lord, your God, has chosen to place his name. You will make the Passover sacrifice in the evening, when the sun goes down, at the time when you went forth out of Egypt. Roast the lamb and eat it in the place that the Lord, your God, will choose. Then, in the morning, return to your homes. For six days you are to eat unleavened bread. Then, on the seventh day, you will hold a solemn assembly to the Lord, your God, and you are to do no heavy labor.

Feast of Weeks. Count off seven weeks from the time that you put the sickle to the standing grain. You are to count off seven weeks, 10 and then you will celebrate the Feast of Weeks to the Lord, your God, making a freewill offering in proportion to how much the Lord, your God, has blessed you. 11 You and your son and your daughter, your manservant and your maidservant, the Levite who lives in your town, the foreigner, the orphan, and the widow are all to rejoice in the place that the Lord, your God, has chosen to place his name. 12 Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and carefully observe these statutes.

13 Feast of Booths. Celebrate the Feast of Booths for seven days after you have gathered the produce of your threshing floor and your winepress. 14 Be joyful at the feast, you and your son and your daughter, your manservant and your maidservant, as well as the Levite, the orphans, and the widows who live in your town. 15 For seven days you are to celebrate the feast to the Lord, your God, in the place that the Lord will choose, for the Lord, your God, has blessed you with all your harvest and all of the works of your hands. Therefore, you must surely rejoice.

16 Three times a year all of your men must appear before the Lord, your God, in the place that he will choose: the Feast of Unleavened Bread, the Feast of Weeks, and the Feast of Booths. You are not to appear before the Lord empty-handed. 17 Each of you is to bring a gift that is proportionate to how much the Lord, your God, has blessed you.

18 Justice.[d]Appoint judges and officials for each of your tribes in every town that the Lord, your God, gives you. They are to judge the people fairly. 19 Do not pervert justice nor show partiality. Do not accept a bribe, for a bribe blinds the eyes of the wise and twists the words of the righteous. 20 Seek justice, so that you may live in and inherit the land that the Lord, your God, has given you.

21 False Worship. Do not plant any sacred grove beside the altar that you will build to the Lord, your God. 22 Do not set up any sacred pillar, for the Lord, your God, hates these things.

Psalm 103

Psalm 103[a]

Praise of God’s Providence

Of David.

Bless the Lord, O my soul;[b]
    my entire being, bless his holy name.
Bless the Lord, O my soul,
    and do not forget all his benefits.
He forgives all your sins
    and heals all your diseases.[c]
He redeems[d] your life from the pit
    and crowns you with kindness and mercy.
He satisfies your years with good things
    and renews your youth like an eagle’s.[e]
The Lord performs acts of righteousness
    and administers justice for all who are oppressed.
[f]He made known his ways[g] to Moses,
    his wondrous deeds to the people of Israel.
[h]The Lord is merciful and gracious,
    slow to anger and abounding in kindness.
He will not always rebuke,
    nor will he remain angry forever.
10 He does not treat us as our sins deserve
    or repay us according to our offenses.
11 As high as the heavens are above the earth,
    so great is his kindness toward those who fear him.[i]
12 As far as the east is from the west,
    so far has he removed our transgressions from us.[j]
13 [k]As a father has compassion for his children,
    so the Lord has compassion for those who fear him.
14 For he knows how we were formed;
    he remembers that we are only dust.[l]
15 The days of mortal man are like grass;
    he flourishes like a flower of the field.
16 The wind sweeps over him, and he is gone,
    and his place never sees him again.
17 But from everlasting to everlasting
    the kindness[m] of the Lord is with those who fear him,
    and his righteousness with their children’s children,
18 with those who keep his covenant
    and diligently observe his commandments.[n]
19 The Lord has established his throne in heaven,
    and his kingdom rules over all.[o]
20 [p]Bless the Lord, O you his angels,[q]
    you mighty in strength who do his bidding,
    who obey his spoken word.
21 Bless the Lord, O you his hosts,
    his ministers who do his will.
22 Bless the Lord, all his works,
    everywhere in his domain.
Bless the Lord, O my soul.[r]

Isaiah 43

Chapter 43

Redemption and Restoration Promised

But now this is the word of the Lord,
    he who created you, O Jacob,
    and formed you, O Israel.
Have no fear, for I have redeemed you.
    I have called you by name; you are mine.
When you pass through the waters,
    I will be with you;
    nor will the waters engulf you.
When you walk through fire,
    you will not be burned;
    the flames will not consume you.
For I am the Lord, your God,
    the Holy One of Israel, your savior.
I give Egypt as your ransom,
    Ethiopia and Seba[a] in exchange for you.
Because in my eyes you are precious,
    because you are honored and I love you,
I will give people in exchange for you
    and nations in return for your life.
Do not be afraid, for I am with you.
    I will bring your offspring from the east,
    and from the west I will gather you.
I will say to the north, “Give them up,”
    and to the south, “Do not hold them back.”
Bring back my sons from afar
    and my daughters from the ends of the earth—
everyone who bears my name,
    whom I created for my glory,
    whom I formed and made.
Bring forth my people,
    those who have eyes yet are blind,
    those who have ears yet are deaf.
Let all the nations gather together
    and let the peoples assemble.
Who among them foretold this
    and proclaimed to us former events?
Let them produce witnesses to prove themselves right;
    let those who hear them say, “It is true!”
10 You are my witnesses, says the Lord,
    and my servants whom I have chosen,
so that you may know and believe in me
    and understand that it is I.
No god was formed before me,
    nor will there be any after me.
11 I am the Lord,
    and there is no other savior but me.
12 I have revealed and saved and proclaimed,
    and not some strange god among you;
    you are my witnesses to this, says the Lord.
13 I am God, and from eternity I am he;
    no one can deliver from my hand;
    no one can overrule or alter what I do.
14 Thus says the Lord, your redeemer,
    the Holy One of Israel:
For your sake I will send an army to Babylon
    to uproot all the prison bars,
and the triumphant shouts of the Chaldeans
    will turn to cries of lamentation.
15 I am the Lord, your Holy One,
    the Creator of Israel, your king.
16 Thus says the Lord,
    who opened a way through the sea,
    a path through raging waters,
17 who led out chariots and horsemen
    and an army of formidable strength,
until the enemy lay prostrate, unable to rise,
    extinguished and snuffed out like a wick.
18 Do not linger thinking about events of the past;
    consider not the things of old.
19 I am about to do something new.
    Now it comes to fruition;
    can you not perceive it?
I will make a path through the wilderness
    and rivers in the desert.
20 The wild beasts will honor me,
    the jackals and the ostriches,
because I will provide water in the desert
    and rivers in the wasteland
    where my chosen people may drink,
21 the people whom I formed for myself
    so that they may proclaim my praise.
22 Yet you did not call upon me, O Jacob;
    you grew weary of me, O Israel.
23 You have not brought me sheep for burnt offerings
    or honored me with your sacrifices.
I have not exacted grain offerings from you
    or wearied you with demands for incense.
24 You have not purchased aromatic cane for me
    or sated me with the fat of your sacrifices.
Rather, you have burdened me with your sins;
    you have wearied me with your crimes.
25 I, I alone, am the one
    who blots out your transgressions for my own sake,
    and I will remember your sins no more.
26 If you choose to review the past,
    let us go to trial;
    state your defense and prove your innocence.
27 Your first ancestor sinned,
    and your spokesmen rebelled against me.
28 Therefore, I expelled the leaders of the sanctuary,
    placing Jacob under the curse of destruction
    and subjecting Israel to scorn.

Revelation 13

Chapter 13

Then I saw a beast rising out of the sea. It had ten horns and seven heads. On its horns were ten diadems, and on its heads were blasphemous names. The beast that I saw resembled a leopard, but it had feet like those of a bear, and its mouth was like the mouth of a lion. The dragon conferred on the beast his own power and his throne, as well as great authority.

One of his heads appeared to me to have been mortally wounded, but its mortal wound had been healed. The whole world then became fascinated with the beast, and they worshiped the dragon because he had conferred authority on the beast. They also worshiped the beast, saying, “Who can compare with the beast? Who can fight against it?”

It was allowed to mouth its haughty and blasphemous words, and it was granted permission to exercise its authority for forty-two months.[a] It opened its mouth to utter blasphemies against God, as well as against his name and his dwelling and all those who live in heaven.

The beast was also allowed to wage war on the saints and conquer them, and it was given authority over every tribe, people, language, and nation. All the inhabitants of the earth will worship it, all those whose names have not been written from the creation of the world[b] in the book of life belonging to the Lamb who was slain.

Whoever has ears should listen to these words:

10 “If anyone is to go into captivity,
    into captivity he will go.
If anyone is destined to be slain by the sword,
    by the sword he must be slain.”

This demands patient endurance and faithfulness on the part of the saints.

11 A Beast Rises from the Earth.[c] Then I saw another beast, this one rising up out of the earth. It had two horns like those of a lamb, but it spoke like a dragon. 12 It wielded all the authority of the first beast on its behalf, and it forced the earth and all its inhabitants to worship the first beast, whose mortal wound had been healed. 13 It performed great signs, even making fire come down from heaven to earth in the sight of all.

14 By the signs it was allowed to perform on behalf of the beast, it deceived the inhabitants of the earth, persuading them to erect an image for the beast that had been wounded by the sword and yet lived. 15 It was permitted to give life to the beast’s image so that it could even speak and cause all those to be put to death who would not worship the image of the beast.

16 It also forced all the people, both small and great, both rich and poor, both free and slave, to be branded on the right hand or on the forehead. 17 No one could buy or sell anything except one who has been branded with the name of the beast or with the number of its name.

18 There is wisdom here. Let anyone who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a person. The number is six hundred and sixty-six.
