Nadab and Abihu
10 Now Aaron’s sons Nadab and Abihu each took his censer, put fire in it, and laid incense on it, and they offered unholy fire before the Lord, such as he had not commanded them.(A) 2 And fire came out from the presence of the Lord and consumed them, and they died before the Lord.(B) 3 Then Moses said to Aaron, “This is what the Lord meant when he said,
‘Through those who are near me
I will show myself holy,
and before all the people
I will be glorified.’ ”
And Aaron was silent.(C)
4 Moses summoned Mishael and Elzaphan, sons of Uzziel the uncle of Aaron, and said to them, “Come forward and carry your kinsmen away from the front of the sanctuary to a place outside the camp.”(D) 5 They came forward and carried them by their tunics out of the camp, as Moses had ordered. 6 And Moses said to Aaron and to his sons Eleazar and Ithamar, “Do not dishevel your hair and do not tear your vestments, or you will die, and wrath will strike all the congregation; but your kindred, the whole house of Israel, may mourn the burning that the Lord has sent.(E) 7 You shall not go outside the entrance of the tent of meeting, lest you die, for the anointing oil of the Lord is on you.” And they did as Moses had ordered.(F)
8 And the Lord spoke to Aaron, 9 “Drink no wine or strong drink, neither you nor your sons, when you enter the tent of meeting, that you may not die; it is a statute forever throughout your generations.(G) 10 You are to distinguish between the holy and the common and between the unclean and the clean,(H) 11 and you are to teach the Israelites all the statutes that the Lord has spoken to them through Moses.”(I)
12 Moses spoke to Aaron and to his remaining sons, Eleazar and Ithamar, “Take the grain offering that is left from the Lord’s offerings by fire,[a] and eat it unleavened beside the altar, for it is most holy;(J) 13 you shall eat it in a holy place, because it is your due and your sons’ due, from the offerings by fire[b] to the Lord, for so I am commanded. 14 But the breast that is elevated and the thigh that is raised, you and your sons and daughters as well may eat in any clean place, for they have been assigned to you and your children from the sacrifices of well-being of the Israelites.(K) 15 The thigh that is raised and the breast that is elevated they shall bring, together with the offerings by fire[c] of the fat, to raise for an elevation offering before the Lord; they are to be your due and that of your children forever, as the Lord has commanded.”(L)
16 Then Moses made inquiry about the goat of the purification offering, and it had already been burned! He was angry with Eleazar and Ithamar, Aaron’s remaining sons, and said, 17 “Why did you not eat the purification offering in the sacred area? For it is most holy, and God[d] has given it to you that you may remove the guilt of the congregation, to make atonement on their behalf before the Lord.(M) 18 Its blood was not brought into the inner part of the sanctuary. You should certainly have eaten it in the sanctuary, as I commanded.” 19 And Aaron spoke to Moses, “See, today they offered their purification offering and their burnt offering before the Lord, and yet such things as these have befallen me! If I had eaten the purification offering today, would it have been agreeable to the Lord?”(N) 20 And when Moses heard that, he agreed.
Psalm 11
Song of Trust in God
To the leader. Of David.
1 In the Lord I take refuge; how can you say to me,
“Flee like a bird to the mountains,[a](A)
2 for look, the wicked bend the bow,
they have fitted their arrow to the string,
to shoot in the dark at the upright in heart.(B)
3 If the foundations are destroyed,
what can the righteous do?”(C)
4 The Lord is in his holy temple;
the Lord’s throne is in heaven.
His eyes behold; his gaze examines humankind.(D)
5 The Lord tests the righteous and the wicked,
and his soul hates the lover of violence.(E)
6 On the wicked he will rain coals of fire and sulfur;
a scorching wind shall be the portion of their cup.(F)
7 For the Lord is righteous;
he loves righteous deeds;
the upright shall behold his face.(G)
Psalm 12
Plea for Help in Evil Times
To the leader: according to The Sheminith. A Psalm of David.
1 Help, O Lord, for there is no longer anyone who is godly;
the faithful have disappeared from humankind.(H)
2 They utter lies to each other;
with flattering lips and a deceitful heart they speak.(I)
3 May the Lord cut off all flattering lips,
the tongue that makes great boasts,(J)
4 those who say, “With our tongues we will prevail;
our lips are our own—who is our master?”
Further Wise Sayings of Solomon
25 These are other proverbs of Solomon that the officials of King Hezekiah of Judah copied.(A)
2 It is the glory of God to conceal things,
but the glory of kings is to search things out.(B)
3 Like the heavens for height, like the earth for depth,
so the mind of kings is unsearchable.
4 Take away the dross from the silver,
and the smith has material for a vessel;(C)
5 take away the wicked from the presence of the king,
and his throne will be established in righteousness.(D)
6 Do not put yourself forward in the king’s presence
or stand in the place of the great,
7 for it is better to be told, “Come up here,”
than to be put lower in the presence of a noble.
What your eyes have seen(E)
8 do not hastily bring into court,
for[a] what will you do in the end,
when your neighbor puts you to shame?(F)
9 Argue your case with your neighbor directly,
and do not disclose another’s secret,(G)
10 or else someone who hears you will bring shame upon you,
and your ill repute will have no end.
11 A word fitly spoken
is like apples of gold in a setting of silver.(H)
12 Like a gold ring or an ornament of gold
is a wise rebuke to a listening ear.(I)
13 Like the cold of snow in the time of harvest
are faithful messengers to those who send them;
they refresh the spirit of their masters.(J)
14 Like clouds and wind without rain
is one who boasts of a gift never given.(K)
15 With patience a ruler may be persuaded,
and a soft tongue can break bones.(L)
16 If you have found honey, eat only enough for you,
lest, having too much, you vomit it up.(M)
17 Let your foot be seldom in your neighbor’s house,
lest the neighbor become weary of you and hate you.
18 Like a war club, a sword, or a sharp arrow
is one who bears false witness against a neighbor.(N)
19 Like a bad tooth or a lame foot
is trust in a faithless person in time of trouble.
20 Like vinegar on a wound[b]
is one who sings songs to a heavy heart.
Like a moth in clothing or a worm in wood,
sorrow gnaws at the human heart.[c]
21 If your enemies are hungry, give them bread to eat,
and if they are thirsty, give them water to drink,(O)
22 for you will heap coals of fire on their heads,
and the Lord will reward you.(P)
23 The north wind produces rain,
and a backbiting tongue, angry looks.(Q)
24 It is better to live in a corner of the housetop
than in a house shared with a contentious wife.(R)
25 Like cold water to a thirsty soul,
so is good news from a far country.(S)
26 Like a muddied spring or a polluted fountain
are the righteous who give way before the wicked.(T)
27 It is not good to eat much honey
or to seek honor on top of honor.(U)
28 Like a city breached, without walls,
is one who lacks self-control.(V)
A Life Pleasing to God
4 Finally, brothers and sisters, we ask and urge you in the Lord Jesus that, as you learned from us how you ought to live and to please God (as, in fact, you are doing), you should do so more and more.(A) 2 For you know what instructions we gave you through the Lord Jesus. 3 For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality;(B) 4 that each one of you know how to control your own body[a] in holiness and honor, 5 not with lustful passion, like the gentiles who do not know God; 6 that no one wrong or exploit a brother or sister in this matter, because the Lord is an avenger in all these things, just as we have already told you beforehand and solemnly warned you.(C) 7 For God did not call us to impurity but in holiness. 8 Therefore whoever rejects this rejects not human authority but God, who also gives his Holy Spirit to you.
9 Now concerning love of the brothers and sisters, you do not need to have anyone write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love one another,(D) 10 and indeed you do love all the brothers and sisters throughout Macedonia. But we urge you, brothers and sisters, to do so more and more, 11 to aspire to live quietly, to mind your own affairs, and to work with your hands, as we directed you,(E) 12 so that you may behave properly toward outsiders and be dependent on no one.(F)
The Coming of the Lord
13 But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, about those who have died,[b] so that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. 14 For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have died.[c](G) 15 For this we declare to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will by no means precede those who have died.[d] 16 For the Lord himself, with a cry of command, with the archangel’s call and with the sound of God’s trumpet, will descend from heaven, and the dead in Christ will rise first.(H) 17 Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up in the clouds together with them to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will be with the Lord forever.(I) 18 Therefore encourage one another with these words.
