M’Cheyne Bible Reading Plan
Chapter 13
Prophetic Disobedience. 1 A man of God came from Judah and went to Bethel, led by the word of the Lord, and Jeroboam was standing by the altar offering incense. 2 He cried out the word of the Lord against the altar saying, “O altar, O altar, thus says the Lord, ‘A son will be born to the house of David by the name of Josiah. On you he will sacrifice the priests of the high places who now burn incense upon you. Human bones will be burnt upon you.’ ”[a]
3 That same day he gave a sign saying, “This is a sign of what the Lord has proclaimed: The altar will be split in two and the ashes on it will be poured out.”
4 When the king heard the man of God speaking against the altar in Bethel, Jeroboam stretched out his hand from the altar proclaiming, “Seize him!” The hand that he stretched out toward him shriveled up, and he could not pull it back again. 5 The altar split apart and its ashes spilt out from the altar, fulfilling the sign that the man of God had proclaimed through the word of the Lord.
6 The king said to the man of God, “Intercede now to the Lord, your God, and pray for me so that my hand might be made well.” The man of God interceded with the Lord, and the king’s hand was made well, just like it was before.
7 The king said to the man of God, “Come home with me and have something to eat, and I will give you a gift.” 8 But the man of God said to the king, “Even if you were to give me half of what belongs to you, I would not go with you, nor would I eat bread or drink water in this place.” 9 I received a command by the word of the Lord, “Do not eat bread or drink water or return by the way you came.” 10 He returned by another way, and did not go back by the way that he had come to Bethel.
11 Fate of a Disobedient Prophet.[b] Now there was an old prophet who lived in Bethel whose sons came and told him all about the things that the man of God had done in Bethel that day. 12 They also told their father what he had said to the king. Their father asked them, “Which way did he go?” His sons showed him the way on which the man of God from Judah had gone. 13 He said to his sons, “Saddle up the donkey for me.” They saddled up the donkey, and he rode on it.
14 He rode after the man of God and found him sitting under an oak tree and said to him, “Are you the man of God who came from Judah?” He answered, “I am.” 15 So he said to him, “Come home and eat with me.” 16 He answered, “I cannot return nor can I go with you. I cannot eat bread with you nor drink water with you in that place. 17 The word of the Lord told me, ‘Do not eat bread nor drink water there. Do not return by the way which you came.’ ”
18 He said, “I am also a prophet like you. An angel spoke the word of the Lord to me, saying, ‘Bring him back with you into your house so that he can eat bread and drink water.’ ” But he was lying.
19 The man of God returned with him and he ate bread and drank water in his house. 20 While they were sitting at the table, the word of the Lord came to the prophet who brought him back. 21 He cried out to the man of God who had come from Judah, “Thus says the Lord: ‘Because you defied the mouth of the Lord and have not observed the command that the Lord, your God, commanded you, 22 but you came back and ate bread and drank water in the place that I told you not to eat bread nor drink water, therefore your body will not be buried in the tomb of your fathers.’ ”
23 When he had finished eating bread and drinking, the prophet who had brought him back saddled his donkey up for him. 24 On the way, a lion came upon him and killed him, and his body was thrown down upon the road, with both the donkey and the lion standing alongside of him.
25 Some of those who were passing by on the road saw his body tossed down there, and there was a lion standing by the body. They came and reported it in the city where the old prophet was living. 26 When the prophet who had brought him back while he was on his way heard about it, he said, “It is the man of God who disobeyed the word of the Lord. The Lord has delivered him over to the lion who tore him to pieces and killed him, just as the word of the Lord had declared to him.”
27 The prophet said to his sons, “Saddle up the donkey for me,” and they saddled it up. 28 They went out and found the body that had been thrown down along the way, and the donkey and the lion were standing alongside of it. The lion had not eaten the body nor had it attacked the donkey. 29 The prophet picked up the body of the man of God and put it upon the donkey. He brought it back to the old prophet’s city to mourn for him and bury him. 30 Then he laid the body in his own grave. They mourned over him saying, “Oh, my brother!”
31 After he buried him, he said to his sons, “When I die, bury me in the grave where the man of God is buried. Lay my bones alongside of his. 32 The thing that he proclaimed by the word of the Lord against the altar in Bethel and against all of the shrines on the high places throughout the cities of Samaria will certainly be fulfilled.”
33 Even after this, though, Jeroboam did not turn away from his evil ways. Once again he appointed priests for the high places from the lowliest of people. He consecrated as priests for the high places anyone who wanted to be consecrated. 34 This was the sin of the house of Jeroboam[c] that caused it to be cut off and wiped out from the face of the earth.
Chapter 4
1 Therefore, my brethren, whom I love and for whom I long, my joy and crown: stand firm in the Lord, beloved.
Counsels and Thanksgiving
Christian Concord.[a] 2 I exhort both Euodia and Syntyche to come to a mutual understanding in the Lord. 3 I also ask you, my loyal companion Syzygus, to help these women, for they have struggled alongside me in the work of the gospel, together with Clement and the rest of my fellow workers, whose names are in the book of life.
Rejoice without Ceasing.[b] 4 Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I say: Rejoice! 5 Let your kindness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. 6 Do not worry about anything, but present your needs to God in prayer and petition, with thanksgiving. 7 Then the peace of God, which is beyond all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
All That Is Truly Human Is Christian.[c] 8 Finally, brethren, let your minds be filled with whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, whatever is excellent, whatever is worthy of praise. 9 Do the things that you have learned, received, and heard from me and that you saw me doing. Then the God of peace will be with you.
Acknowledgment of the Community’s Gift[d]
10 Contentment in Any Circumstances. I rejoice greatly in the Lord that now at last you have renewed your concern for me. You were, of course, concerned about me, but you had no opportunity to show it. 11 I do not say this because I have been in need, for I have learned to be content with whatever I have.
12 I know how to live with little, and I know how to live with plenty. In any and all circumstances, I have learned the secret of being well fed and of going hungry, of having plenty and of being in need. 13 I can do all things in him who strengthens me.
14 Philippian Generosity. Even so, it was kind of you to share my difficulties. 15 You Philippians are aware that in the early days of the gospel[e] when I set out from Macedonia, not a single Church other than yours shared with me in giving and receiving. 16 Even when I was in Thessalonica, you sent me something for my needs on more than one occasion.
17 Do not think that it is the gift that I value most. What I desire is for the interest to mount up in your account. 18 I have been paid in full and have more than enough. I am satisfied now that I have received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent. They are a fragrant offering, an acceptable sacrifice pleasing to God.[f] 19 And my God will fully supply all your needs out of the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.
20 Doxology. To our God and Father be glory forever and ever. Amen.
Conclusion
21 Final Greetings.[g] Give my greetings to every one of the saints in Christ Jesus. The brethren who are with me send their greetings to you, 22 as do all the saints here, especially those in the emperor’s service.
23 Benediction.[h] The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit.
Restoration of the Temple
Chapter 43
The Lord’s Return.1 [a]Then the man brought me to the gate that faces the east, 2 and there I beheld the glory of the God of Israel coming from the east. The sound of his coming was like the sound of a mighty torrent of waters, and the earth shone with his glory.
3 The vision I beheld was like the man I had seen when he had come to destroy the city, and like the vision I had seen by the River Chebar, and I fell prostrate.
4 As the glory of the Lord entered the temple by way of the east gate, 5 the Spirit lifted me up and brought me to the inner court, and I beheld the glory of the Lord fill the temple.
6 While the man stood beside me, I heard someone speaking to me from the temple. 7 He said to me: Son of man, this is the place of my throne and the place for the soles of my feet. This is where I will dwell forever among the Israelites. Never again will the house of Israel defile my holy name, neither they nor their kings, by their whoring and by the corpses of their kings.
8 When they placed their threshold next to my threshold and their doorposts beside my doorposts, with only a wall separating me and them, they were defiling my holy name by the loathsome practices in which they engaged. Therefore, I will destroy them in my anger.[b] 9 From now on, they must cease their harlotry and remove the corpses of their kings from my presence. Then I will dwell among them forever.
10 The Temple Law. As for you, son of man, describe this temple to the house of Israel, so that they will be truly ashamed of their iniquities. 11 And if they are ashamed of all that they have done, make known to them the design and arrangement of the temple, its exits and entrances, its shape, and all its ordinances. 12 This is the law of the temple: all the surrounding area on the top of the mountain shall be most holy. Such is the law of the temple.
13 Measurements of the Altar.[c]These were the dimensions of the altar in cubits of one cubit and a handbreadth. Its base was one cubit high and one cubit wide, with a rim of one span around its edge. This was the height of the altar. 14 From its base on the ground up to the lower ledge, it was two cubits high and one cubit wide, and from the lower ledge to the upper ledge, it was four cubits high and again one cubit wide.
15 The altar hearth was four cubits high, and from the hearth, four horns projected upward. 16 The hearth was a square, twelve cubits long by twelve cubits wide. 17 The upper ledge was also a square, fourteen cubits long by fourteen cubits wide, with a rim around it a half cubit wide and a surrounding base of one cubit. The steps of the altar face the east.
18 Then he said to me: Son of man, thus says the Lord God: These are the regulations for the altar when it has been erected for the offering of holocausts upon it and for the sprinkling of blood upon it. 19 You are to present a young bull as a sin offering to the Levitical priests of the family of Zadok who are authorized to draw near me in order to minister to me, says the Lord God.
20 You are to take some of its blood and put it on the four horns of the altar and on the four corners of the ledge and upon the surrounding rim. Thus, you will purify it and make atonement for it. 21 Then take the bull designated for the sin offering and immolate it in the designated part of the temple area outside the sanctuary.
22 On the second day, you are to present an unblemished male goat as a sin offering, and the altar must be purified again, as was done with the bull. 23 When you have finished purifying it, choose an unblemished young bull and an unblemished ram from the flock. 24 After you present them before the Lord, the priests will throw salt on them and offer them to the Lord as burnt offerings.
25 For seven days you are to offer a male goat for a sin offering, as well as a young bull and an unblemished ram from the flock. 26 In this way, they will make atonement for the altar and cleanse it, and thereby consecrate it.
27 Once these days have been completed, from the eighth day onward the priests will offer your burnt offerings and your peace offerings on the altar. Then I will accept you, says the Lord.
Psalm 95[a]
A Call To Praise and Obey God
1 [b]Come, let us sing with jubilation to the Lord;
let us cry out to the Rock of our salvation.
2 Let us come before him with thanksgiving
and extol him with our songs.
3 [c]For the Lord is the great God,
the King who surpasses all other gods.[d]
4 In his hands are the depths of the earth,
and the peaks of the mountains are his.
5 To him belongs the sea, for he created it,
and also the dry land[e] that his hands have molded.
6 Come forth! Let us bow down to worship him;
let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker.[f]
7 For he is our God,
and we are the people he shepherds,[g]
the flock he protects.
If only you would listen to his voice today:
8 “Harden not your hearts as you did at Meribah,[h]
as on the day of Massah in the wilderness.
9 It was there that your ancestors sought to tempt me;
they put me to the test
even though they had witnessed my works.[i]
10 “For forty years[j] I loathed that generation;
I said, ‘They are a people whose hearts go astray,
and they do not know my ways.’
11 Therefore, in my anger I swore,
‘They will never enter my rest.’ ”[k]
Psalm 96[l]
God, Sovereign and Judge of the Universe
1 Sing to the Lord a new song;[m]
sing to the Lord, all the earth.
2 Sing to the Lord and bless his name;
proclaim his salvation[n] day after day.
3 Declare his glory[o] among the nations,
his wondrous deeds to every people.
4 For great is the Lord and worthy of all praise;
he is more to be feared[p] than all other gods.
5 The gods of the nations are merely idols,
but it was the Lord who made the heavens.[q]
6 Majesty and splendor surround him;
power and beauty[r] are in his sanctuary.
7 Render to the Lord, you families of nations,
render to the Lord glory and power.[s]
8 Render to the Lord the glory due to his name;
bring an offering and enter his courts.[t]
9 Worship[u] the Lord in the splendor of his holiness;
tremble before him, all the earth.
10 Say among the nations, “The Lord is King.[v]
The world is firmly established, never to be moved.
He will judge the peoples fairly.”
11 Let the heavens exult and the earth be glad;
let the sea resound and all that fills it.
12 Let the fields rejoice and all that is in them;
let all the trees[w] of the forest shout for joy
13 before the Lord, for he is coming,
coming to judge the earth.
He will judge the world with justice
and the nations with equity.[x]
