Chapter 30

The Altar of Incense. “You shall build an altar upon which to burn incense. Make it of acacia wood, one cubit long and one cubit wide. It shall be square, and two cubits high; and its horns shall all be one piece with it. Cover its top, its sides, and its horns with pure gold, and make a gold molding around it. You shall also make two golden rings below its molding on its two sides. Place them on opposite sides. They shall be used to insert poles with which to carry it. You shall make the poles out of acacia wood and cover them with gold. And you shall place the altar in front of the veil that hides the Ark of Testimony, in front of the seat of atonement that is upon it, where I will meet you.

“Aaron shall burn fragrant incense upon the altar. He shall burn it each morning when he trims the lamps, and also in the evening when he refills the lamps. There shall be perpetual incense before the Lord throughout all your generations. Do not offer any unholy incense upon it, nor burnt offerings nor sacrifices nor libations. 10 Once a year Aaron shall perform an atonement ritual upon it, upon its horns. He shall make atonement upon it with the blood of your sin offering once a year throughout all your generations. It is something most holy to the Lord.”

11 The Temple Tax. The Lord spoke to Moses and said, 12 “When you take a census of the number of the children of Israel, each man will offer a ransom for his life to the Lord, when you number them, lest there be a plague among them when you number them. 13 Each person counted in the census will give half a shekel according to the measure of the shekel of the sanctuary (a shekel is twenty gerahs). The half shekel will be an offering to the Lord. 14 Everyone who is counted in the census, from twenty years old and up, will give the Lord’s offering. 15 The rich will not give more and the poor will not give less than half a shekel, when you give the Lord’s offering, in order to ransom your life. 16 You shall take the money of this ransom of the children of Israel and designate it for the needs of the meeting tent. It shall be a memorial before the Lord for the children of Israel, for the ransom of your lives.”

17 The Basin for Washing. The Lord said to Moses, 18 “You shall make a basin out of bronze, with a base of bronze, for ablutions. Place it between the meeting tent and the altar and fill it with water. 19 Aaron and his sons shall wash their hands and their feet in it.[a] 20 When they enter the meeting tent, they shall perform an ablution with water, lest they die. Thus, whenever they approach the altar to minister, to burn an offering unto the Lord with fire, 21 they shall wash their hands and their feet so that they might not die. This shall be a perpetual statute for him and his sons, for all their generations.”

22 The Anointing Oil. The Lord said to Moses, 23 “Take the finest spices: five hundred shekels of flowing myrrh, half that amount of sweet-smelling cinnamon, namely two hundred and fifty shekels of it, two hundred and fifty shekels of aromatic cane, 24 five hundred shekels of cassia, all according to the shekel of the sanctuary, and a hin of olive oil. 25 Make a holy anointing oil out of them using the craft of the perfumer who blends oils. It shall be a holy anointing oil. 26 With it you are to anoint the meeting tent, the Ark of Testimony, 27 the table and all its accessories, the lampstand and its accessories, the altar of incense, 28 the altar of burnt offerings and all of its accessories, and the basin and its base. 29 You shall consecrate these things, and they shall become most holy. Whatever touches them will be holy.

30 “You shall also anoint Aaron and his sons and consecrate them so that they may serve me as priests. 31 Say to the children of Israel: ‘This shall be my holy anointing oil for all your generations. 32 You shall not pour it out on anyone’s body, nor shall you make anything else like it. It is holy, and it shall be holy to you.’

33 “Anyone who makes anything like it, or who pours it on an outsider, shall be cut off from his people.”

34 The Incense. The Lord said to Moses, “Gather sweet spices, gum of stacte, onycha, resin of galbanum, equal measures of sweet spices and pure frankincense, 35 and make an incense using the skill of the perfumer. It is to be salted, pure and holy. 36 Beat some of it very fine and put it before the Testimony in the meeting tent where I shall meet with you. It shall be most holy to you.

37 “You shall not make for yourselves anything like this incense according to its composition. You shall consider it to be holy to the Lord. 38 Whoever makes anything like it to use for its sweet odor shall be cut off from his people.”

John 9

A Sign of the Triumph of the Light[a]

Chapter 9

Jesus Cures a Man Born Blind.[b] As Jesus walked along, he saw a man who had been blind from birth. His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” Jesus answered,

“Neither this man nor his parents sinned,
but it happened
so that the works of God
might be revealed in him.
We must do
the works of him who sent me
while it is still day.
Night is coming when no one can work.
While I am in the world,
I am the light of the world.”

When he had said this, he spat on the ground, made a paste with the saliva, and smeared the paste on the eyes of the blind man. Then he said to him, “Go and wash in the Pool of Siloam.”[c] (The name means “Sent.”) The man went forth and washed, and he returned seeing.

That Man Is a Prophet.[d] His neighbors and those who had seen him begging asked, “Is this not the man who used to sit and beg?” Some were saying, “Yes, this is the same man,” but others insisted, “No. It simply is someone who looks like him.” He said, “I am the man.”

10 Therefore, they asked him, “Then how were your eyes opened?” 11 He replied, “The man called Jesus made a paste and smeared it over my eyes. Then he said to me, ‘Go to Siloam and wash.’ So I went and washed, and then I was able to see.” 12 They asked him, “Where is he?” He replied, “I do not know.”

13 They then brought the man who had formerly been blind to the Pharisees. 14 Now it was on a Sabbath day that Jesus had made the paste and opened his eyes.

15 The Pharisees also asked him how he had gained his sight. He said to them, “He put a paste on my eyes. Then I washed, and now I can see.”

16 Some of the Pharisees said, “This man cannot be from God, for he does not observe the Sabbath.” But others said, “How can a man who is a sinner perform such signs?” Thus, they were divided in their opinions. 17 And so they spoke again to the blind man, asking, “What do you have to say about him? It was your eyes that he opened.” He replied, “He is a prophet.”

18 However, the Jews refused to believe that the man had been blind and had received his sight until they summoned the parents of the man who had received his sight 19 and asked them, “Is this your son who you say was born blind? How then is he now able to see?” 20 His parents answered, “We know that this is our son and that he was born blind, 21 but we do not know how he is now able to see, nor do we know who opened his eyes. Ask him. He is of age. He can speak for himself.”

22 His parents responded in this way because they were afraid of the Jews. For the Jews had already agreed that anyone who acknowledged Jesus to be the Christ would be put out of the synagogue. 23 This is why his parents said, “He is of age. Ask him.”

24 That Man Is from God.[e] And so for a second time they summoned the man who had been blind and said to him, “Give glory to God. We know that this man is a sinner.” 25 He answered, “I do not know whether he is a sinner. But one thing I do know: I was blind, and now I am able to see.” 26 They then asked him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?” 27 He answered them, “I have told you already and you would not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also want to become his disciples?”

28 Then they began to taunt him, saying, “It is you who are his disciple. We are disciples of Moses. 29 We know that God spoke to Moses, but as for this man, we do not know where he is from.” 30 He answered, “That is what is so amazing. You do not know where he comes from, and yet he opened my eyes. 31 We know that God does not listen to sinners, but that he does listen to anyone who is devout and obeys his will.

32 “Never since the world began has it been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a person born blind. 33 If this man were not from God, he could not have been able to accomplish anything.” 34 They answered him, “You were born in sin and you would teach us?” Then they threw him out.

35 Do You Believe in the Son of Man?[f] When Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, he found him and asked, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?” 36 He replied, “Who is he, sir, so that I may believe in him?” 37 “You have seen him,” said Jesus, “and he is the one who is speaking to you.” 38 He said, “I do believe, Lord,” and he fell down in worship before him.

39 Spiritual Blindness.[g] Then Jesus said,

“It is for judgment
that I have come into this world,
so that those without sight may see
and those who do see may become blind.”

40 On hearing this, some Pharisees who were present asked him, “Are we blind too?” 41 Jesus replied,

“If you were blind,
you would have no guilt;
but since you claim, ‘We see,’
your guilt remains.

Chapter 6

Do Not Take on Impossible Tasks[b]

My son, if you have guaranteed the debt of your neighbor
    or the bond of a stranger,
you have been trapped by the utterance of your lips,
    ensnared by the words of your mouth.
To extricate yourself from this situation,
    this is what you must do, my son.
Since you have fallen into his power,
    go directly to your neighbor and plead with him.
Give your eyes no sleep,
    your eyelids no slumber.
Break free like a gazelle from a trap
    or like a bird from the grasp of a fowler.

Contemplate the Ant, You Sluggard[c]

Contemplate the ant, you sluggard;[d]
    observe its ways and gain wisdom.
Even though it has no chief,
    no governor or ruler,
it stores its provisions throughout the summer
    and gathers its food at the time of harvest.
How long do you intend to lie there, you sluggard?
    When will you rise from your sleep?
10 A little sleep, a little slumber,
    a little folding of the arms to rest,
11 and poverty will overtake you like a robber,
    and scarcity like an armed man.

12 A scoundrel,[f] a villainous man, is he
    who specializes in crooked talk.
13 He winks with his eyes,
    gives signals with his feet,
    and makes gestures with his fingers.
14 His perverted heart is ever bent toward devising evil
    as he constantly sows discord.
15 Therefore, disaster will strike him suddenly;
    in an instant he will be crushed beyond recovery.

Six Things That the Lord Hates[g]

16 There are six things that the Lord hates,
    seven that are abhorrent to him:
17 haughty eyes,[h] a lying tongue,
    hands that shed innocent blood,
18 a heart that devises wicked schemes,[i]
    feet that are quick to rush into evil,
19 a false witness[j] who spews out lies,
    and one who sows dissension among brothers.

20 Observe your father’s command, my son,
    and do not reject your mother’s teaching.
21 Bind them forever in your heart;
    tie them around your neck.
22 When you walk, they will guide you;
    when you lie down, they will watch over you;
    when you awaken, they will instruct you.
23 For this command is a lamp, this teaching is a light,[l]
    and the corrections of discipline point the way to life,
24 to preserve you from an immoral woman,
    from the seductive tongue of an adulteress.
25 Do not lust after her beauty in your heart
    or allow her to entice you with her eyes.
26 For if a prostitute seeks a loaf of bread,
    the adulteress endangers your very life.[m]
27 Can a man kindle a fire in his bosom
    without burning his clothes?
28 Or can a man walk on red-hot coals
    without scorching his feet?
29 So it is with the man
    who consorts with his neighbor’s wife;
    no one who touches her will escape punishment.
30 People attach little blame to a thief
    if he steals only to satisfy his hunger.
31 However, once caught, he must pay back sevenfold[n]
    and hand over all his household possessions.
32 But the one who commits adultery lacks sense;
    only someone who wants to destroy himself does so.
33 He will get nothing but beatings and contempt,
    and his disgrace will never be wiped away.
34 For jealousy inflames a husband’s anger,
    and he will be merciless in taking revenge.
35 He will not consider any compensation,
    and he will reject even the most lavish gifts.

Galatians 5

There Is No Freedom Except in Christ[a]

Chapter 5

Faith Expressing Itself through Love. It was for freedom that Christ set us free. Therefore, stand firm and refuse to submit again to the yoke of slavery.

Listen to me! I, Paul, tell you that if you allow yourselves to be circumcised, Christ will be of no value to you. Once again, I testify that every man who accepts circumcision is under obligation to observe the entire Law. Those of you who seek to be justified by the Law have cut yourselves off from Christ and have fallen away from grace. For it is through the Spirit and by faith that we eagerly hope to attain righteousness, since in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor lack of circumcision is worth anything. All that matters is faith expressing itself through love.

Against Being Misled. You were running a good race. Who kept you from obeying the truth? This change did not come from the one who called you. A little yeast leavens the entire batch of dough. 10 I am confident of you in the Lord that none of you will think differently, and that anyone who is trying to confuse you will be condemned, no matter who it is.

11 As for me, brethren, if I were still advocating circumcision,[b] why would I continue to be persecuted? If I were doing that, the cross would no longer be a stumbling block. 12 I wish that those who are confusing you would even castrate themselves!

13 Proper Use of Freedom. Brethren, you were called to freedom. However, make sure that you do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh. Instead, serve one another in love. 14 For the entire Law can be summed up[c] in a single commandment: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 15 But if you continue biting and tearing one another to pieces, at least be on your guard lest you be consumed by one another.

16 Hence, I advise you to be guided by the Spirit, so that you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the desires of the flesh are opposed to the Spirit, and those of the Spirit are opposed to the flesh. They are in conflict with one another, so that you cannot do what you want. 18 But if you are guided by the Spirit, you are not subject to the Law.

19 [d]Now the works of the flesh are obvious: fornication, impurity, licentiousness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, anger, quarrels, dissensions, factions, 21 envy, drunkenness, carousing, and the like. I warn you, as I warned you previously, that no one who does such things will inherit the kingdom of God.

22 [e]In contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against such things. 24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also be guided by the Spirit. 26 We should not become conceited, or provoke one another, or be envious of one another.
