Judges 6

¶ And the sons of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD, and the LORD delivered them into the hands of Midian for seven years.

And the hand of Midian prevailed against Israel, and because of the Midianites the sons of Israel made dens in the mountains and caves and strongholds.

For when those of Israel had sown, the Midianites would come up and the Amalekites and the sons of the east. They would come up against them

and encamp against them and destroy the fruits of the earth as far as Gaza, and they would leave nothing to eat in Israel neither sheep nor ox nor ass.

For they would come up with their livestock and their tents in a great multitude like locusts, for there was no number in them nor in their camels, and they would enter into the land destroying it.

And Israel was greatly impoverished because of the Midianites, and the sons of Israel cried unto the LORD.

¶ And when the sons of Israel cried unto the LORD because of the Midianites,

the LORD sent a prophet unto the sons of Israel who said unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I brought you up from Egypt and brought you forth out of the house of slavery;

I delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians and out of the hand of all that oppressed you and drove them out from before you and gave you their land;

10 and I said unto you, I am the LORD your God; do not fear the gods of the Amorites in whose land ye dwell, but ye have not heard my voice.

11 ¶ And the angel of the LORD came and sat under the oak which was in Ophrah that pertained unto Joash, the Abiezrite, and his son Gideon threshed wheat in the winepress, to hide it from the Midianites.

12 And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him and said unto him, The LORD is with thee, thou mighty man of valour.

13 And Gideon said unto him, Oh my Lord, if the LORD is with us, why then has all this befallen us? And where are all his miracles which our fathers told us of, saying, Did not the LORD bring us up from Egypt? But now the LORD has forsaken us and delivered us into the hands of the Midianites.

14 And the LORD looked upon him and said, Go in this thy might, and thou shalt save Israel from the hand of the Midianites. Do I not send thee?

15 Then he replied unto him, Oh my Lord, with what shall I save Israel? Behold, my family is poor in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father’s house.

16 And the LORD said unto him, Surely I will be with thee, and thou shalt smite the Midianites as one man.

17 And he said unto him, If now I have found grace in thy sight, then show me a sign that thou hast spoken with me.

18 Do not depart from here, I pray thee, until I come unto thee and bring forth my present and set it before thee. And he said, I will tarry until thou come again.

19 And Gideon went in and made ready a kid and unleavened cakes of an ephah of flour; the flesh he put in a basket, and he put the broth in a pot and brought it out unto him under the oak and presented it.

20 And the angel of God said unto him, Take the flesh and the unleavened cakes and lay them upon this rock and pour out the broth. And he did so.

21 Then the angel of the LORD put forth the end of the staff that was in his hand and touched the flesh and the unleavened cakes; and there rose up fire out of the rock and consumed the flesh and the unleavened cakes. Then the angel of the LORD departed out of his sight.

22 And when Gideon perceived that he was the angel of the LORD, Gideon said, Alas, O Lord GOD! for I have seen the angel of the LORD face to face.

23 And the LORD said unto him, Peace be unto thee; do not fear, thou shalt not die.

24 Then Gideon built an altar there unto the LORD and called it The LORD is the Peace, {YHWH-shalom} unto this day it is yet in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

25 ¶ And it came to pass the same night that the LORD said unto him, Take a bullock of thy father’s house and a second bullock seven years old and throw down the altar of Baal that thy father has and cut down the grove that is by it

26 and build an altar unto the LORD thy God upon the top of this rock, according to due order, and take the second bullock and offer a burnt sacrifice upon the wood of the grove which thou shall have cut down.

27 Then Gideon took ten men of his slaves and did as the LORD had said unto him. But he feared to do it by day because of his father’s family and the men of the city, so he did it by night.

28 And when the men of the city arose early in the morning, behold, the altar of Baal was cast down, and the grove was cut down that was by it, and the second bullock was offered upon the altar that was built.

29 And they said one to another, Who has done this thing? And when they enquired and asked, they said, Gideon, the son of Joash, has done this thing.

30 Then the men of the city said unto Joash, Bring out thy son that he may die because he has cast down the altar of Baal and because he has cut down the grove that was by it.

31 And Joash replied unto all that stood against him, Will ye contend for Baal? Will ye save him? Whoever will contend for him, let him be put to death while it is yet morning; if he is God, let him contend for himself with the one who has cast down his altar.

32 Therefore, on that day he called him Jerubbaal, saying, Let Baal contend against him because he has thrown down his altar.

33 ¶ Then all the Midianites and the Amalekites and the sons of the east gathered themselves together as one and went over and pitched camp in the valley of Jezreel.

34 And the Spirit of the LORD clothed himself in Gideon, who when he had blown the shofar, Abiezer joined with him.

35 And he sent messengers throughout all Manasseh who also joined with him; likewise he sent messengers unto Asher and unto Zebulun and unto Naphtali; and they came up to meet them.

36 And Gideon said unto God, Wilt thou save Israel by my hand as thou hast said?

37 Behold, I will put a fleece of wool in the threshing floor; and if the dew is on the fleece only and it is dry upon all the earth beside it, then I shall know that thou wilt save Israel by my hand as thou hast said.

38 And it was so, for he rose up early in the morning, and wringing the fleece, he took the dew out of it, a bowl full of water.

39 But Gideon said unto God, Let not thine anger be hot against me if I speak again on this occasion; only let me prove again now with the fleece. I pray thee, let it be dry only upon the fleece, and upon all the ground let there be dew.

40 And God did so that night for it was dry upon the fleece only, and there was dew on all the ground.

Acts 10

10 ¶ There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of the company called the Italian,

a devout man and one that feared God with all his house, who gave many alms to the people and prayed to God always.

He saw in a vision evidently about the ninth hour of the day an angel of God coming in to him and saying unto him, Cornelius.

And when he looked on him, he was afraid and said, What is it, Lord? And he said unto him, Thy prayers and thine alms {lit. thine acts of mercy} are come up for a memorial before God.

And now send men to Joppa and call for one Simon, whose surname is Peter;

he lodges with one Simon a tanner, whose house is by the sea side; he shall tell thee what it behooves thee to do.

And when the angel who spoke unto Cornelius was departed, he called two of his household servants and a devout soldier of those that waited on him continually;

and when he had declared all these things unto them, he sent them to Joppa.

¶ On the morrow, as they went on their journey and drew near unto the city, Peter went up upon the housetop to pray about the sixth hour;

10 and he became very hungry and would have eaten; but while they made ready, he fell into a rapture of understanding

11 and saw the heaven opened and a certain vessel descending unto him, as it had been a great sheet knit at the four corners and let down to the earth,

12 in which were all manner of fourfooted beasts of the earth and wild beasts and reptiles and fowls of the air.

13 And there came a voice to him, Rise, Peter, kill and eat.

14 But Peter said, Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten any thing that is common or unclean.

15 And the voice spoke unto him again the second time, That which God has cleansed, do not call common.

16 This was done three times, and the vessel was received up again into heaven.

17 Now while Peter doubted in himself what this vision which he had seen should mean, behold, the men who were sent from Cornelius had made enquiry for Simon’s house and stood before the gate

18 and called and asked whether Simon, who was surnamed Peter, were lodged there.

19 ¶ While Peter thought on the vision, the Spirit said unto him, Behold, three men seek thee.

20 Arise therefore and get thee down and go with them, doubting nothing; for I have sent them.

21 Then Peter went down to the men who were sent unto him from Cornelius and said, Behold, I am he whom ye seek; what is the cause for which ye are come?

22 And they said, Cornelius the centurion, a just man and one that fears God and of good report among all the nation of the Jews, was warned from God by a holy angel to send for thee into his house and to hear words of thee.

23 Then he called them in and lodged them. And on the morrow Peter went away with them, and certain brethren from Joppa accompanied him.

24 And the next day they entered into Caesarea. And Cornelius waited for them and had called together his kinsmen and near friends.

25 And as Peter was coming in, Cornelius met him and fell down at his feet and worshipped him.

26 But Peter took him up, saying, Stand up; I myself also am a man.

27 And as he talked with him, he went in and found many that were come together.

28 And he said unto them, Ye know how that it is an abominable thing for a man that is a Jew to keep company or come unto one of another nation; but God has showed me that I should not call any man common or unclean.

29 Therefore I came unto you without doubting, as soon as I was sent for; I ask therefore for what intent ye have sent for me?

30 And Cornelius said, Four days ago I was fasting until this hour; and at the ninth hour I prayed in my house, and, behold, a man stood before me in bright clothing

31 and said, Cornelius, thy prayer is heard and thine alms are had in remembrance in the sight of God.

32 Send therefore to Joppa, and call here Simon, whose surname is Peter; he is lodged in the house of one Simon a tanner by the sea side, who, when he comes, shall speak unto thee.

33 Immediately therefore I sent to thee, and thou hast done well to come. Now therefore we are all here present before God to hear all things that are commanded thee of God.

34 ¶ Then Peter opened his mouth and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons;

35 but in every nation he that fears him and works righteousness is acceptable to him.

36 The word which God sent unto the sons of Israel, preaching the gospel: peace by Jesus Christ (he is Lord of all),

37 that word, I say, ye know, which was published throughout all Judaea and began from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached,

38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all that were oppressed of the devil, for God was with him.

39 And we are witnesses of all things which he did both in the land of Judea and in Jerusalem, whom they slew hanging him on a tree.

40 This same one God raised up the third day and showed him openly,

41 not to all the people, but unto witnesses chosen before of God, even to us, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead.

42 And he commanded us to preach unto the people and to testify that it is he who is ordained of God to be the Judge of living and dead.

43 Unto him all the prophets give witness, that whosoever believes in him shall receive remission of sins through his name.

44 ¶ While Peter yet spoke these words, the Holy Spirit fell on all those who heard the word.

45 And those of the circumcision who believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, that also on the Gentiles the gift of the Holy Spirit was poured out.

46 For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God. Then Peter answered,

47 Can anyone forbid water that these should not be baptized, who have received the Holy Spirit as well as we?

48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then they begged him to tarry certain days.

Jeremiah 19

19 ¶ Thus hath the LORD said, Go and buy a potter’s earthen bottle, and take of the elders of the people and of the elders of the priests;

and go forth unto the valley of the son of Hinnom, which is by the entry by the east gate, and proclaim there the words that I shall tell thee.

Therefore thou shalt say, Hear ye the word of the LORD, O kings of Judah, and inhabitants of Jerusalem. Thus saith the LORD of the hosts, God of Israel: Behold, I bring evil upon this place, such that whoever hears of it, his ears shall tingle.

Because they have forsaken me and have estranged this place; and have burned incense in it unto other gods, whom neither they nor their fathers have known, nor the kings of Judah and have filled this place with the blood of innocents;

and have built high places unto Baal, to burn their sons with fire for burnt offerings unto this same Baal, which I did not command, nor speak, neither did it come into my mind.

Therefore, behold, the days come, said the LORD, that this place shall no longer be called Tophet, nor The valley of the son of Hinnom, but The valley of the slaughter.

And I will make void the counsel of Judah and Jerusalem in this place, and I will cause them to fall by the sword before their enemies and by the hands of those that seek their souls and I will give their carcasses to be food for the fowls of the heaven and for the beasts of the earth.

And I will make this city desolate and a hissing; every one that passes thereby shall be astonished and hiss because of all its plagues.

And I will cause them to eat the flesh of their sons and the flesh of their daughters, and each one shall eat the flesh of his friend in the siege and straitness, with which their enemies and those that seek their souls shall straiten them.

10 ¶ Then thou shalt break the bottle in the sight of the men that go with thee,

11 and shalt say unto them, Thus hath the LORD of the hosts said: Even so will I break this people and this city as one breaks a potter’s vessel that cannot be restored again; and they shall bury them in Tophet, for there shall be no other place to bury.

12 Thus will I do unto this place, saith the LORD, and to its inhabitants and even make this city as Tophet:

13 And the houses of Jerusalem and the houses of the kings of Judah, shall be as the place of Tophet, defiled, because of all the houses upon whose roofs they have burned incense unto all the host of the heaven and have poured out drink offerings unto other gods.

14 Then Jeremiah returned from Tophet, where the LORD had sent him to prophesy; and he stood in the court of the LORD’s house and said to all the people,

15 Thus hath the LORD of the hosts, God of Israel said: Behold, I bring upon this city and upon all her towns all the evil that I have spoken against her because they have hardened their necks that they might not hear my words.

Mark 5

¶ And they came over unto the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gadarenes.

And when he was come out of the ship, immediately there met him a man of the tombs, with an unclean spirit,

who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no one could bind him, no, not with chains,

because many times he had been bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been broken in pieces by him, and the fetters shattered; neither could anyone tame him.

And always, night and day, he was in the mountains and in the tombs, crying out and hurting himself with stones.

But when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran and worshipped him.

Crying out with a loud voice, he said, What hast thou with me, Jesus, thou Son of the most high God? I adjure thee by God, that thou torment me not.

For he said unto him, Come out of the man, thou unclean spirit.

And he asked him, What is thy name? And he answered, saying, My name is Legion, for we are many.

10 And he besought him much that he would not send him away out of that country.

11 Now near unto the mountains there was a great herd of swine feeding,

12 and all those devils besought him, saying, Send us into the swine, that we may enter into them.

13 And forthwith Jesus gave them leave. And the unclean spirits went out and entered into the swine, and the herd fell over a cliff into the sea (they were about two thousand) and were choked in the sea.

14 And those that fed the swine fled and told it in the city and in the country. And people went out to see what it was that had happened.

15 And they come to Jesus and see him that was tormented by the demon and had the legion sitting and clothed and in his right mind; and they were afraid.

16 And those that saw it told them what happened to him that had the demon and also concerning the swine.

17 And they began to plead with him to depart out of their borders.

18 And as he was entering into the ship, he that had been troubled by the demon besought him that he might be with him.

19 But Jesus suffered him not but said unto him, Go home to thy friends and family and tell them what great things the Lord has done with thee and how he has had mercy on thee.

20 And he went and began to publish in Decapolis what great things Jesus had done with him, and everyone marveled.

21 ¶ And when Jesus was passed over again by ship unto the other side, a great multitude gathered unto him, and he was near the sea.

22 And one of the princes of the synagogue came, Jairus by name; and when he saw him, he fell at his feet

23 and besought him greatly, saying, My little daughter lies at the point of death; come and lay thy hands on her that she may be saved, and she shall live.

24 And Jesus went with him; and a great multitude followed him and thronged him.

25 And a certain woman, who had an issue of blood twelve years

26 and had suffered many things of many physicians and had spent all that she had and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse;

27 when she had heard of Jesus, came from behind among the multitude and touched his garment.

28 For she said, If I may touch but his clothes, I shall be saved.

29 And straightway the fountain of her blood was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of that plague.

30 And Jesus, immediately knowing in himself that virtue had gone out of him, turned to the crowd and said, Who touched my clothes?

31 And his disciples said unto him, Thou seest the multitude thronging thee and sayest thou, Who touched me?

32 And he looked round about to see her that had done this thing.

33 But the woman fearing and trembling, knowing what was done in her, came and fell down before him and told him all the truth.

34 And he said unto her, Daughter, thy faith has made thee saved; go in peace and remain whole of thy plague.

35 ¶ While he yet spoke, there came from the ruler of the synagogue’s house certain who said, Thy daughter is dead: why troublest thou the Master any further?

36 As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, he said unto the prince of the synagogue, Be not afraid, only believe.

37 And he suffered no one to follow him, except Peter, and James, and John the brother of James.

38 And they came to the house of the prince of the synagogue and saw the tumult and those that wept and wailed greatly.

39 And when he was come in, he said unto them, Why make ye this ado and weep? The damsel is not dead, but sleeps.

40 And they laughed him to scorn. But when he had put them all out, he took the father and the mother of the damsel and those that were with him and entered in where the damsel was lying.

41 And taking the damsel by the hand, he said unto her, Talitha cumi, which is, being interpreted, Damsel, I say unto thee, arise.

42 And straightway the damsel arose and walked, for she was twelve years old. And they were astonished with a great astonishment.

43 And he charged them straitly that no one should know it and commanded that something should be given her to eat.
