Joshua 3

3 Joshua commandeth them to depart when the Ark removeth. 7 The Lord promiseth to exalt Joshua before the people. 9 Joshua’s exhortation to the people. 16 The waters part asunder while the people pass.

Then Joshua rose very early, and they removed from Shittim, and came to [a]Jordan, he, and all the children of Israel, and lodged there before they went over.

And after [b]three days, the officers went throughout the host,

And commanded the people, saying, When ye see the Ark of the covenant of the Lord your God and the Priests of the Levites bearing it, ye shall depart from your place, and go after it.

Yet shall there be a space between you and it, about [c]two thousand cubits by measure: ye shall not come near unto it, that ye may know the way, by the which ye shall go: for ye have not gone this way in times past.

(Now Joshua had said unto the people, (A)Sanctify yourselves: for tomorrow the Lord will do wonders among you.)

Also Joshua spake unto the Priests, saying, Take up the Ark of the covenant, and go over before the people: so they took up the Ark of the covenant, and went before the people.

¶ Then the Lord said unto Joshua, This day will I begin to magnify thee in the sight of all Israel, which shall know, that (B)as I was with Moses, so will I be with thee.

Thou shalt therefore command the Priests that bear the Ark of the covenant, saying, When ye are come to the brink of the waters of Jordan, ye shall stand still [d]in Jordan.

¶ Then Joshua said unto the children of Israel, Come hither, and hear the words of the Lord your God.

10 And Joshua said, [e]Hereby ye shall know that the living God is among you, and that he will certainly cast out before you the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Hivites, and the Perizzites, and the Girgashites, and the Amorites, and the Jebusites.

11 Behold, the Ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the world passeth before you into Jordan.

12 Now therefore take from among you [f]twelve men out of the tribes of Israel, out of every tribe a man.

13 And as soon as the soles of the feet of the Priests (that bear the Ark of the Lord God the Lord of all the world) shall stay in the waters of Jordan, the waters of Jordan shall be cut off: for the waters that come from above, (C)shall stand still upon an heap.

14 ¶ Then when the people were departed from their tents to go over Jordan, the Priests bearing the (D)Ark of the covenant, went before the people.

15 And as they that bare the Ark, came unto Jordan, and the feet of the Priests that bare the Ark were dipped in the brink of the water, ((E)for Jordan useth to fill all his [g]banks all the time of harvest)

16 Then the waters that came down from above, stayed and rose upon an heap, and departed far from the city of Adam that was beside Zaretan: but the waters that came down toward the Sea of the wilderness, even the salt Sea, failed and were cut off: so the people went right over against Jericho.

17 But the Priests that bare the Ark of the covenant of the Lord, stood dry within Jordan [h]ready prepared, and all the Israelites went over dry, until all the people were clean gone over through Jordan.

Psalm 126-128

126 1 This Psalm was made after the return of the people from Babylon, and showeth that the means of their deliverance was wonderful after the seventy years of captivity forspoken by Jeremiah, in Jer. 25:12 and 29:10.

A song of degrees, or Psalm of David.

When the Lord brought again the captivity of Zion, we were like them that [a]dream.

Then was our mouth [b]filled with laughter, and our tongue with joy: then said they among the [c]heathen, The Lord hath done great things for them.

The Lord hath done great things for us, whereof we rejoice.

O Lord, bring again our captivity, as the [d]rivers in the South.

They that sow in tears, shall reap in joy.

They went weeping, and carried [e]precious seed: but they shall return with joy, and bring their sheaves.

127 1 He showeth that the whole estate of the world, both domestical and political, standeth by God’s mere providence and blessing, 3 And that to have children well nurtured, is an especial grace and gift of God.

A song of degrees, or Psalm of Solomon.

Except the Lord [f]build the house, they labor in vain that build it: except the Lord keep the [g]city, the keeper watcheth in vain.

It is in vain for [h]you to rise early, and to lie down late, and eat the bread [i]of sorrow: but he will surely give [j]rest to his beloved.

Behold, children are the inheritance of the Lord, and the fruit of the womb his reward.

As are the arrows in the hand of the strong man; so are the [k]children of youth.

Blessed is the man that hath his quiver full of them: for they [l]shall not be ashamed, when they speak with their enemies in the gate.

128 He showeth that blessedness appertaineth not to all universally, but to them only that fear the Lord, and walk in his ways.

A song of degrees.

Blessed is everyone that feareth the Lord, and walketh in his [m]ways.

When thou eatest the labors of thine [n]hands, thou shalt be blessed, and it shall be well with thee.

Thy wife shall be as the fruitful vine on the sides of thine house, and thy [o]children like the olive plants round about thy table.

Lo, surely thus shall the man be blessed, that feareth the Lord.

The Lord out of Zion shall [p]bless thee, and thou shalt see the wealth of [q]Jerusalem all the days of thy life.

Yea, thou shalt see thy children’s children, and peace upon Israel.

Isaiah 63

63 1 God shall destroy his enemies for his Church’s sake. 7 God’s benefits toward his Church.

Who is this that cometh [a]from Edom, with red garments from Bozrah? he is glorious in his apparel, and walketh in his great strength. [b]I speak in righteousness, and am mighty to save.

[c]Wherefore is thine apparel red, and thy garments like him that treadeth in the winepress?

I have trodden the winepress alone, and of all people there was none with me: for I will tread them in mine anger, and tread them under foot in my wrath, and their blood shall be sprinkled upon my garments, and I will stain all my raiment.

For the day of vengeance is in mine heart, and the [d]year of my redeemed is come.

And I looked, and there was none to help, and I wondered that there was none to uphold: therefore mine own [e]arm helped me, and my wrath itself sustained me.

Therefore I will tread down the people in my wrath, and make them [f]drunken in mine indignation, and will bring down their strength to the earth.

I will [g]remember the mercy of the Lord, and the praises of the Lord, according unto all that the Lord hath given us, and for the great goodness toward the house of Israel, which he hath given them according to his tender love, and according to his great mercies.

For he said, Surely they are my [h]people, children that will not lie: so he was their Savior.

In all their troubles he was [i]troubled, and the Angel [j]of his presence saved them: in his love and in his mercy he redeemed them, and he bare them and carried them always continually.

10 But they rebelled and vexed his holy Spirit: therefore was he turned to be their enemy, and he fought against them.

11 Then he [k]remembered the old time of Moses and his people, saying, Where is he that brought them up out of the sea with the [l]shepherd of his sheep? Where is he that put his holy Spirit within [m]him?

12 He led them by the right hand of Moses with his own glorious arm, dividing the water before them, to make himself an everlasting Name.

13 He led them through the deep, as an [n]horse in the wilderness, that they should not stumble.

14 As the beast goeth down into the valley, the Spirit of the Lord gave them rest: so didst thou lead thy people, to make thyself a glorious Name.

15 [o]Look down from heaven, and behold from the dwelling place of thine holiness, and of thy glory. Where is thy [p]zeal and thy strength, the multitude of thy mercies, and of thy compassion? they are restrained from [q]me.

16 Doubtless thou art our Father: though [r]Abraham be ignorant of us, and Israel know us not, yet thou, O Lord, art our Father, and our redeemer: thy Name is forever.

17 O Lord, why hast [s]thou made us to err from thy ways? and hardened our heart from thy fear? Return for thy [t]servant’s sake, and for the tribes of thine inheritance.

18 The people of thine holiness have possessed it, but a little [u]while: for our adversaries have trodden down thy Sanctuary.

19 We have been as they, over whom thou never barest rule, and upon whom thy name was not called.

Matthew 11

11 2 John sendeth his disciples to Christ. 7 Christ’s testimony of John. 13 The Law and the Prophets. 15 Christ and John. 21 Chorazin, Bethsaida. 25 The Gospel revealed to children. 28 They that are weary and laden.

And [a]it came to pass that when Jesus had made an end of [b]commanding his twelve disciples, he departed thence to teach and to preach in [c]their cities.

(A)And when John heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples, and said unto him,

Art thou he that should come, or shall we look for another?

And Jesus answering, said unto them, Go, and show John, what things ye hear and see.

The blind receive sight, and the halt do walk: the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, (B)and the poor receive the Gospel.

And blessed is he that shall not be offended in me.

[d]And as they departed, Jesus began to speak unto the multitude of John, What went ye out into the wilderness to see? a reed shaken with the wind?

But what went ye out to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? Behold they that wear soft clothing, are in kings’ houses.

But what went ye out to see? A Prophet? Yea, I say unto you, and more than a Prophet.

10 For this is he of whom it is written, (C)Behold, I send my messenger before thy face which shall prepare thy way before thee.

11 Verily I say unto you, Among them which are begotten of women, arose there not a greater than John Baptist, notwithstanding, he that is the least in the [e]kingdom of heaven, is greater than he.

12 And from (D)the time of John Baptist hitherto, the kingdom of God suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force.

13 For all the Prophets and the Law [f]prophesied unto John.

14 And if ye will receive it, this is (E)that Elijah, which was to come.

15 He that hath ears to hear let him hear.

16 (F)[g]But whereunto shall I liken this generation? [h]It is like unto little children which sit in the markets, and call unto their fellows,

17 And say, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced, we have mourned unto you, and ye have not lamented.

18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He hath a devil.

19 The Son of men came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a glutton and a drinker of wine, a friend unto Publicans and sinners: [i]but [j]wisdom is justified of her children.

20 (G)[k]Then began he to upbraid the cities, wherein most of his great works were done, because they repented not.

21 Woe be to thee Chorazin: Woe be to thee Bethsaida: for if the great works which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they had repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.

22 But I say to you, It shall be easier for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment, than for you.

23 And thou Capernaum, which art lifted up unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the great works, which have been done in thee, had been done among them of Sodom, they had remained to this day.

24 But I say unto you, that it shall be easier for them of the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee.

25 (H)At that time Jesus answered and said, I give thee thanks, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise, and men of understanding, and hast [l]opened them unto babes.

26 It is [m]so, O Father, because thy [n]good pleasure was such.

27 (I)[o]All things are given unto me of my Father: and (J)no man knoweth the Son, but the Father: neither knoweth any man the Father, but the Son, and he to whom the Son will reveal him.

28 Come unto me, all ye that are weary and laden, and I will ease you.

29 Take my yoke on you, and learn of me that I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find (K)rest unto your souls.

30 (L)For my yoke is [p]easy, and my burden light.
