32 1 God comforteth Jacob by his Angels. 9, 10 He prayeth unto God confessing his unworthiness. 13 He sendeth presents unto Esau. 24, 28 He wrestled with the Angel who nameth him Israel.

Now Jacob went forth on his journey, and (A)the Angels of God met him.

And when Jacob saw them, he said, [a]This is God’s host: and he called the name of the same place [b]Mahanaim.

Then Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother, unto the land of Seir into the country of Edom.

To whom he gave commandment, saying, Thus shall ye speak to my [c]lord Esau: thy servant Jacob saith thus, I have been a stranger with Laban, and tarried unto this time.

I have beeves also and asses, sheep, and men servants, and women servants, and have sent to show my lord, that I may find grace in thy sight.

¶ So the messengers came again to Jacob, saying, We came unto thy brother Esau, and he also cometh against thee and four hundred men with him.

Then Jacob was [d]greatly afraid, and was sore troubled, and divided the people that was with him, and the sheep, and the beeves, and the camels into two companies.

For he said, If Esau come to the one company and smite it, the other company shall escape.

¶ Moreover Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, Lord, which (B)saidst unto me, Return unto thy country, and to thy kindred, and I will do thee good.

10 I am not [e]worthy of the least of all the mercies, and all the truth, which thou hast showed unto thy servant: for with my [f]staff came I over this Jordan, and now have I gotten two bands.

11 I pray thee, Deliver me from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau: for I fear him, lest he will come and smite me, and the [g]mother upon the children.

12 And thou saidest, I will surely do to thee good, and make thy seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.

13 ¶ And he tarried there that same night and took of that which came to hand, a [h]present for Esau his brother:

14 Two hundred she goats, and twenty he goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams:

15 Thirty milch camels with their colts, forty kine, and ten bullocks, twenty she asses, and ten foals.

16 So he delivered them into the hand of his servants, every drove by themselves, and said unto his servants, Pass before me, and put a space between drove and drove.

17 And he commanded the foremost, saying, If my brother Esau meet thee, and ask thee, saying, Whose servant art thou? And whither goest thou? and whose are these before thee?

18 Then thou shalt say, They be thy servant Jacob’s: it is a present sent unto my lord Esau: and behold, he himself also is behind us.

19 So likewise commanded he the second and the third, and all that followed the droves, saying, After this manner, ye shall speak unto Esau, when ye find him.

20 And ye shall say moreover, Behold, thy servant Jacob cometh after us. (for he thought, I [i]will appease his wrath with the present that goeth before me, and afterward I will see his face: it may be that he will [j]accept me.)

21 So went the present before him: but he tarried that night with the company.

22 And he rose up the same night, and took his two wives, and his two maids, and his eleven children, and went over the ford Jabbok.

23 And he took them, and sent them over the river, and sent over that he had.

24 ¶ Now when Jacob was left himself alone, there wrestled a [k]man with him unto the breaking of the day.

25 And he saw that he could not [l]prevail against him: therefore he touched the hollow of his thigh, and the hollow of Jacob’s thigh was loosed, as he wrestled with him.

26 And he said, Let me go, for the morning appeareth. Who answered, (C)I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.

27 Then said he unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob.

28 And said he, (D)Thy name shall be called Jacob no more, but Israel: because thou hast had [m]power with God, thou shalt also prevail with men.

29 And Jacob demanded, saying, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore now dost thou ask my name? and he blessed him there.

30 And Jacob called the name of the place, Peniel: for, said he, I have seen God face to face, and [n]my life is preserved.

31 And the sun rose up to him as he passed Peniel, and he [o]halted upon his thigh.

32 Therefore the children of Israel eat not of the sinew which shrank in the hollow of the thigh, unto this day: because he touched the sinew that shrank in the hollow of Jacob’s thigh.

Mark 3

And (A)[a]he entered again into the Synagogue, and there was a man which had a [b]withered hand.

And they watched him, whether he would heal him on the Sabbath day, that they might accuse him.

Then he said unto the man which had the withered hand, Arise: stand forth in the midst.

And he said to them, Is it lawful to do a good deed on the Sabbath day, or to do evil? to save the [c]life, or to kill? but they held their peace.

Then he looked round about on them [d]angrily, mourning also for the [e]hardness of their hearts, and said to the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it out: and his hand was restored, as whole as the other.

[f]And the Pharisees departed, and straightway gathered a council with the [g]Herodians against him, that they might destroy him.

But Jesus avoided with his disciples to the sea: and a great multitude followed him from Galilee, and from Judea,

And from Jerusalem, and from Idumea, and [h]beyond Jordan: and they that dwelled about Tyre and Sidon, when they had heard what great things he did, came unto him in great number.

And he commanded his disciples, that a little ship should [i]wait for him, because of the multitude, lest they should throng him.

10 For he had healed many, insomuch that they pressed upon him to touch him, as many as had [j]plagues.

11 And when the [k]unclean spirits saw him, they fell down before him, and cried, saying, Thou art the Son of God.

12 And he sharply rebuked them, to the end they should not utter him.

13 (B)Then he went up into a mountain, and called unto him whom he would, and they came unto him.

14 [l]And he [m]appointed twelve, that they should be with him, and that he might send them to preach.

15 And that they might have power to heal sicknesses, and to cast out devils:

16 And the first was Simon, and he named Simon, Peter,

17 Then James the son of Zebedee, and John James’ brother (and surnamed them Boanerges, which is, The sons of thunder.)

18 And Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and [n]Thaddaeus, and Simon the Canaanite,

19 And Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him, and they came [o]home.

20 And the multitude assembled again, so that they could not so much as eat bread.

21 [p]And when his [q]kinsfolks heard of it, they went out to lay hold on him: for they said that he was beside himself.

22 (C)And the Scribes which came down from Jerusalem, said, He hath Beelzebub, and through the prince of the devils he casteth out devils.

23 But he called them unto him, and said unto them in parables, How can Satan drive out Satan?

24 For if a kingdom be divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand.

25 Or if a house be divided against itself, that house cannot continue.

26 So if [r]Satan make insurrection against himself, and be divided, he cannot endure, but is at an end.

27 No man can enter into a strong man’s house, and take away his goods, except he first bind that strong man, and then spoil his house.

28 (D)[s]Verily I say unto you, all sins shall be forgiven unto the children of men, and blasphemies, wherewith they blaspheme:

29 But he that blasphemeth against the holy Ghost, shall never have forgiveness, but is culpable of eternal damnation.

30 [t]Because they said, He had an unclean spirit.

31 (E)Then came his [u]brethren and mother and stood without, and sent unto him, and called him.

32 And the people sat about him, and they said unto him, Behold, thy mother, and thy brethren seek for thee without.

33 But he answered them, saying, Who is my mother and my brethren?

34 [v]And he looked round about on them, which sat in compass about him, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren.

35 For whosoever doeth the will of God, he is my brother, my sister, and my mother.

Esther 8

1 After the death of Haman was Mordecai exalted. 14 Comfortable letters are sent unto the Jews.

The same day did King Ahasuerus give the house of Haman the adversary of the Jews, unto the Queen Esther. And Mordecai [a]came before the King: for Esther told what he was [b]unto her.

And the King took off his ring, which he had taken from Haman, and gave it unto Mordecai: and Esther set Mordecai over the house of Haman.

And Esther spake yet more before the King, and fell down at his feet weeping, and besought him that he would put away the [c]wickedness of Haman the Agagite, and his device that he had imagined against the Jews.

And the King held out the golden [d]scepter toward Esther. Then arose Esther, and stood before the King,

And said, If it please the King, and if I have found favor in his sight, and the thing be acceptable before the King, and I please him, let it be written, that the letters of the device of Haman the son of Hammedatha the Agagite may be called again, which he wrote to destroy the Jews, that are in all the King’s provinces.

For how can I suffer and see the evil, that shall come unto my people? Or how can I suffer and see the destruction of my kindred?

And the king Ahasuerus said unto the Queen Esther, and to Mordecai the Jew, Behold, I have given Esther the house of Haman, whom they have hanged upon the tree, because he [e]laid hand upon the Jews.

Write ye also for the Jews, as it liketh you in the King’s name, and seal it with the King’s ring, (for the writings written in the King’s name, and sealed with the king’s ring, may [f]no man revoke.)

Then were the King’s Scribes called at the same time, even in the third month, that is the month [g]Sivan, on the three and twentieth day thereof: and it was written, according to all as Mordecai commanded, unto the Jews and to the princes, and captains and rulers of the provinces, which were from India even unto Ethiopia, an hundred and seven and twenty provinces, unto every province according to the [h]writing thereof, and to every people after their speech, and to the Jews, according to their writing, and according to their language.

10 And he wrote in the King Ahasuerus’s name, and sealed it with the King’s ring, and he sent letters by posts on horseback and that rode on beasts of price, as dromedaries, and [i]colts of mares.

11 Wherein the King granted the Jews (in what cities soever they were) to gather themselves together, and to stand for [j]their life, and to root out, to slay and to destroy all the power of the people and of the province that vexed them, both children and women, and to spoil their goods:

12 Upon one day in all the provinces of King Ahasuerus, even in the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, which is the month [k]Adar.

13 The copy of the writing was, how there should be a commandment given in all and every province, published among all the people, and that the Jews should be ready against that day, to [l]avenge themselves on their enemies.

14 So the posts rode upon beasts of price, and dromedaries, and went forth with speed, to execute the King’s commandment, and the decree was given at Shushan the palace.

15 And Mordecai went out from the King in royal apparel of blue, and white, and with a great crown of gold, and with a garment of fine linen and purple, and the city of Shushan rejoiced and was glad.

16 And unto the Jews was come light and [m]joy and gladness, and honor.

17 Also in all and every province, and in all and every city and place, where the King’s commandment and his decree came, there was joy and gladness to the Jews, a feast and good day, and many of the people of the land [n]became Jews: for the fear of the Jews fell upon them.

Romans 3

1 He giveth the Jews some  2 preferment, for the covenant’s sake, 4 but yet such, as wholly dependeth on God’s mercy. 9 That both Jews and Gentiles are sinners, 11 he proveth by Scriptures: 19 and showing the use of the Law, 28 he concludeth that we are justified by faith.

What [a]is then the preferment of the Jew? or what is the profit of circumcision?

Much every manner of way: for [b]chiefly, because unto them were of credit committed the [c]oracles of God.

For what, though some did not [d]believe? shall their unbelief make the [e]faith of God without effect?

God forbid: yea, let God be true, and every man a liar, as it is written, That thou mightest be [f]justified in thy words, and overcome, [g]when thou art judged.

[h]Now if our [i]unrighteousness commend the righteousness of God, what shall we say? is God unrighteous which punisheth? (I speak as [j]a man.)

God forbid: (else how shall God judge the world?)

[k]For if the [l]verity of God hath more abounded through my lie unto his glory, why am I yet condemned as a sinner?

And (as we are blamed, and as some affirm, that we say) why do we not evil, that good may come thereof? whose damnation is just.

[m]What then? are we more excellent? No, in no wise: for we have already proved, that all, both Jews and Gentiles are [n]under sin,

10 As it is written, (A)There is none righteous no not one.

11 There is none that understandeth: there is none that seeketh God.

12 They have all gone out of the way: they have been made altogether unprofitable: there is none that doeth good, no not one.

13 (B)Their throat is an open sepulcher: they have used their tongues to deceit: (C)the poison of asps is under their lips.

14 (D)Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness.

15 (E)Their feet are swift to shed blood.

16 Destruction and calamity are in their ways:

17 And the [o]way of peace they have not known.

18 (F)The fear of God is not before their eyes.

19 [p]Now we know that whatsoever the [q]law saith, it saith it to them which are under the law, that [r]every mouth may be stopped, and all the world be [s]subject to the judgment of God.

20 Therefore by the [t]works of the Law shall no [u]flesh be [v]justified in his [w]sight: for by the Law cometh the knowledge of sin.

21 [x]But now is the righteousness of God made manifest without the Law, having witness of the Law, and of the Prophets,

22 [y]To wit, the righteousness of God by the faith of [z]Jesus Christ, unto all, and upon all that believe.

23 For there is no difference: for all have sinned, and are deprived of the [aa]glory of God,

24 [ab]And are justified [ac]freely by his grace, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,

25 [ad]Whom God hath set forth to be a reconciliation through faith in his [ae]blood to declare his righteousness, by the forgiveness of the sins that [af]are passed,

26 Through the [ag]patience of God, to show at [ah]this time his righteousness, that he might be [ai]just, and a [aj]justifier of him which is of the [ak]faith of Jesus.

27 [al]Where is then the rejoicing? It is excluded. By what [am]Law? of works? Nay: but by the Law of faith.

28 Therefore we conclude, that a man is justified by faith, without the works of the Law.

29 [an]God, is he the God of the [ao]Jews only, and not of the Gentiles also? Yes, even of the Gentiles also.

30 For it is one God, who shall justify [ap]circumcision of faith, and uncircumcision through faith.

31 [aq]Do we then make the Law of [ar]none effect through faith? God forbid: yea, we [as]establish the Law.
