15 1 David prepareth an house for the Ark. 4 The number and order of the Levites. 16 The singers are chosen out among them. 25 They bring again the Ark with joy. 29 David dancing before it is despised of his wife Michal.
1 And David made him houses in the [a]city of David, and prepared a place for the Ark of God, and pitched for it a tent.
2 Then David said, (A)None ought to carry the Ark of God, but the Levites: for the Lord hath chosen them to bear the Ark of the Lord, and to minister unto him forever.
3 ¶ And David gathered all Israel together to Jerusalem to bring up the [b]Ark of the Lord unto his place, which he had ordained for it.
4 And David assembled the sons of Aaron, and the Levites.
5 Of the sons of Kohath, Uriel the chief, and his [c]brethren six score.
6 Of the sons of Merari, Asaiah the chief, and his brethren two hundred and twenty.
7 Of the sons of Gershom, Joel the chief, and his brethren an hundred and thirty.
8 Of the sons of [d]Elizaphan, Shemaiah the chief, and his brethren two hundred.
9 Of the sons of [e]Hebron, Eliel the chief, and his brethren fourscore.
10 Of the sons of Uzziel, Amminadab the chief, and his brethren an hundred and twelve.
11 ¶ And David called Zadok and Abiathar the Priests, and of the Levites, Uriel, Asaiah and Joel, Shemaiah and Eliel, and Amminadab.
12 And he said unto them, Ye are the chief fathers of the Levites: [f]sanctify yourselves, and your brethren, and bring up the Ark of the Lord God of Israel unto the place that I have prepared for it.
13 For (B)because ye were not there at the first, the Lord our God made a breach among us: for we sought him not after due [g]order.
14 So the Priests and the Levites sanctified themselves to bring up the Ark of the Lord God of Israel.
15 ¶ And the sons of the Levites bare the Ark of God upon their shoulders with the bars as Moses had commanded, (C)according to the word of the Lord,
16 And David spake to the chief of the Levites, that they should appoint certain of their brethren to sing with [h]instruments of music, with viols and harps, and cymbals, that they might make a sound, and lift up their voice with joy.
17 So the Levites appointed Heman the son of Joel, and of his brethren Asaph the son of Berechiah, and of the sons of Merari their brethren, Ethan the son of Kushaiah,
18 And with them their brethren in the [i]second degree, Zechariah, Ben, and Jaaziel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehiel, and Unni, Eliab, and Benaiah, and Maaseiah, and Mattithiah, and Elipheleh, and Mikneiah, and Obed-Edom, and Jeiel the porters.
19 So Heman, Asaph, and Ethan, were singers to make a sound with cymbals of brass,
20 And Zechariah, and Aziel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehiel, and Unni, and Eliab, and Maaseiah, and Benaiah with viols on [j]Alamoth,
21 And Mattithiah, and Elipheleh, and Mikneiah, and Obed-Edom, and Jeiel, and Azaziah, with harps upon [k]Sheminith Jenazzeah.
22 But Chenaniah the chief of the Levites had the [l]charge bearing the burden in the charge, for he was able to instruct.
23 And Berechiah and Elkanah were porters for the Ark.
24 And Shebaniah, and Joshaphat and Nethanel and Amasai, and Zechariah, and Benaiah, and Eliezer the Priests did blow with trumpets before the Ark of God, and Obed-Edom and Jehiah were porters [m]for the Ark.
25 (D)So David and the Elders of Israel and the captains of thousands went to bring up the Ark of the Covenant of the Lord from the house of Obed-Edom with joy.
26 And because that God [n]helped the Levites that bare the Ark of the covenant of the Lord, they offered [o]seven bullocks and seven rams.
27 And David had on him a linen garment, as all the Levites that bare the Ark, and the singers, and Chenaniah that had the chief charge of the singers: and upon David was a linen [p]Ephod.
28 Thus all Israel brought up the Ark of the Lord’s covenant with shouting, and sound of cornet, and with trumpets, and with cymbals, making a sound with viols and with harps.
29 And when the Ark of the [q]covenant of the Lord came into the city of David, Michal the daughter of Saul looked out at a window, and saw king David dancing and playing, and (E)she despised him in her heart.
2 1 He sayeth, that to have respect of persons is not agreeable to Christ’s faith, 14 which to profess in words is not enough, unless 15 we show it also in deeds of mercy and charity, 21 after the example of Abraham.
1 My [a]brethren, have not the faith of our [b]glorious Lord Jesus Christ (A)in respect of persons.
2 For if there come into your company a man with a gold ring, and in goodly apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment,
3 And ye have a respect to him that weareth the gay clothing; and say unto him, Sit thou here in a [c]goodly place, and say unto the poor, Stand thou there, or sit here under my footstool,
4 Are ye not partial in [d]your selves, and are become Judges of evil thoughts?
5 [e]Hearken my beloved brethren, hath not God chosen the [f]poor of this world, that they should be rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he promised to them that love him?
6 But ye have despised the poor. [g]Do not the rich oppress you by tyranny, and do they not draw you before the judgment seats?
7 Do not they blaspheme the worthy Name after which ye be [h]named?
8 [i]But if ye fulfill the [j]royal Law according to the Scripture, which saith, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself, ye do well.
9 But if ye regard the persons, ye commit sin, and are rebuked of the Law, as transgressors.
10 [k]For whosoever shall keep the whole Law, and yet faileth in one point, he is guilty of [l]all.
11 [m]For he that said, Thou shalt not commit adultery, said also, Thou shalt not kill. Now though thou doest none adultery, yet if thou killest, thou art a transgressor of the Law.
12 [n]So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judgeth by the Law of liberty.
13 For there shall be condemnation merciless to him that showeth not [o]mercy, and mercy rejoiceth against condemnation.
14 [p]What availeth it my brethren, though a man saith, he hath faith, when he hath no works? can that faith save him?
15 [q]For if a brother or a sister be naked and destitute of daily food,
16 And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace: warm yourselves, and fill your bellies, notwithstanding ye give them not those things, which are needful to the body, what helpeth it?
17 Even so the faith, if it have no works, is dead in itself.
18 But [r]some man might say, Thou hast the faith, and I have works: show me thy faith out of thy works, and I will show thee my faith by my works.
19 [s]Thou believest that there is one God: thou doest well: the devils also believe it, and tremble.
20 [t]But wilt thou understand, O thou vain man, that the faith which is without works, is dead?
21 Was not Abraham our father [u]justified through works, (B)when he offered Isaac his son upon the altar?
22 Seest thou not that the faith [v]wrought with his works? and through the works was the faith made [w]perfect.
23 And the Scripture was [x]fulfilled which saith, (C)Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the friend of God.
24 [y]Ye see then how that of works a man is [z]justified, and not of [aa]faith only.
25 [ab]Likewise also was not (D)Rahab the harlot justified through works, when she had received the messengers, and sent them out another way?
26 [ac]For as the body without the spirit is dead, even so the faith without works is dead.
9 Threatenings against the Temple, 2 And against Israel. 11 The restoring of the Church.
1 I saw the Lord standing upon the [a]Altar, and he said, Smite the lintel of the door, that the posts may shake: and cut them in pieces, even the [b]heads of them all, and I will slay the last of them with the sword: he that fleeth of them, shall not flee away: and he that escapeth of them, shall not be delivered.
2 Though they dig into the hell, thence shall mine hand take them: though they climb up to heaven, thence will I bring them down.
3 And though they hide themselves in the top of Carmel, I will search and take them out thence: and though they be hid from my sight in the bottom of the sea, thence will I command the [c]serpent, and he shall bite them.
4 And though they go into captivity before their enemies, thence will I command the sword, and it shall slay them: and I will set mine eyes upon them for evil, and not for good.
5 And the Lord God of hosts shall touch the land, and it shall melt away, and all that dwell therein shall mourn, and it shall rise up wholly like a flood, and shall be drowned as by the flood of Egypt.
6 He buildeth his [d]spheres in the heaven, and hath laid the foundation of his globe of elements in the earth: he calleth the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the open earth: the Lord is his Name.
7 Are ye not as the Ethiopians [e]unto me, O children of Israel, saith the Lord? have not I brought up Israel out of the land of Egypt? and the Philistines from [f]Caphtor, and Aram from Kir?
8 Behold, the eyes of the Lord God are upon the sinful kingdom, and I will destroy it clean out of the earth. Nevertheless I will not utterly [g]destroy the house of Jacob, saith the Lord.
9 For lo, I will command and I will sift the house of Israel among all nations, like as corn is sifted in a sieve: yet shall not the [h]least stone fall upon the earth.
10 But all the sinners of my people shall die by the sword, which say, The evil shall not come, nor hasten for us.
11 In that day will I raise up the [i]Tabernacle of David, that is fallen down, and close up the breaches thereof, and I will raise up his ruins, and I will build it, as in the days of old,
12 That they may possess the remnant of [j]Edom, and of all the heathen, because my Name is called upon them, saith the Lord, that doeth this.
13 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that the plowman shall [k]touch the mower, and the treader of grapes him that soweth seed: and the mountains shall [l]drop sweet wine, and all the hills shall melt.
14 [m]And I will bring again the captivity of my people of Israel: and they shall build the waste cities, and inhabit them, and they shall plant vineyards, and drink the wine thereof: they shall also make gardens, and eat the fruits of them.
15 And I will plant them upon their land, and they shall no more be pulled up again out of their land which I have given them, saith the Lord thy God.
4 1 Of Christ’s temptation, and fasting. 16 He teacheth in Nazareth to the great admiration of all. 24 A Prophet that teacheth in his own country is condemned. 33 One possessed of the devil is cured. 38 Peter’s mother-in-law is healed, 40 and divers sick persons are restored to health. 41 The devils acknowledge Christ.
1 And [a]Jesus full of the holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by that Spirit into the wilderness,
2 (A)And was there forty days tempted of the devil, and in those days he did eat nothing, but when they were ended, he afterward was hungry.
3 [b]Then the devil said unto him, If thou be the son of God, command this stone, that it be made bread.
4 But Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, (B)That man shall not live by bread only, but by every word of God.
5 Then the devil took him up into an high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world, in the twinkling of an eye.
6 And the devil said unto him, All this [c]power will I give thee, and the glory of those kingdoms: for that is [d]delivered to me: and to whomsoever I will, I give it.
7 If thou therefore wilt worship me, they shall be all [e]thine.
8 But Jesus answered him, and said, Hence from me, Satan: for it is written, (C)Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him alone thou shalt serve.
9 Then he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a pinnacle of the Temple, and said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down from hence,
10 For it is written, (D)That he will give his Angels charge over thee to keep thee:
11 And with their hands they shall lift thee up, lest at anytime thou shouldest dash thy foot against a stone.
12 And Jesus answered, and said unto him, It is said, (E)Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.
13 And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him for a little season.
14 ¶ And Jesus returned by the power of the spirit into Galilee: and there went a fame of him throughout all the region round about:
15 For he taught in their Synagogues, and was honored of all men.
16 (F)[f]And he came to Nazareth where he had been brought up, and (as his custom was) went into the Synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read.
17 And there was delivered unto him the book of the Prophet Isaiah: and when he had [g]opened the book, he found the place, where it was written,
18 (G)The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me, that I should preach the Gospel to the poor: he hath sent me, that I should heal the brokenhearted, that I should preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, that I should set at liberty them that are bruised:
19 And that I should preach the acceptable year of the Lord.
20 And he closed the book, and gave it again to the minister, and sat down: and the eyes of all that were in the Synagogue were fastened on him.
21 Then he began to say unto them, This day is the Scripture fulfilled in your ears.
22 [h]And all [i]bare him witness, and [j]wondered at the [k]gracious words, which proceeded out of his mouth, and said, Is not this Joseph’s son?
23 Then he said unto them, Ye will surely say unto me this Proverb, Physician, heal thyself: whatsoever we have heard done in Capernaum, do it here likewise in thine own country.
24 And he said, Verily I say unto you, (H)No Prophet is accepted in his own country.
25 But I tell you of a truth, many widows were in Israel in the days of (I)Elijah, when heaven was shut three years and six months, when great famine was throughout all the [l]land:
26 But unto none of them was Elijah sent, save into Zarephath, a city of Sidon, unto a certain widow.
27 Also many lepers were in Israel, in the time of (J)Elisha the Prophet: yet none of them was made clean, saving Naaman the Syrian.
28 [m]Then all that were in the Synagogue, when they heard it, were filled with wrath,
29 And rose up, and thrust him out of the city, and led him unto the edge of the hill, whereon their city was built, to cast him down headlong.
30 But he passed through the midst of them, and went his way,
31 ¶ (K)And came down into Capernaum a city of Galilee, and there taught them on the Sabbath days.
32 (L)And they were astonied at his doctrine: for his word was with authority.
33 (M)And in the Synagogue there was a man which had a spirit of an unclean devil, which cried with a loud voice,
34 [n]Saying, Oh, what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know who thou art, even the Holy one of God.
35 And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. Then the devil throwing him in the midst of them, came out of him, and hurt him nothing at all.
36 So fear came on them all, and they spake among themselves, saying, What thing is this: for with authority and power he commandeth the foul spirits, and they come out?
37 And the fame of him spread abroad throughout all the places of the country round about.
38 ¶ (N)[o]And he rose up, and came out of the Synagogue, and entered into Simon’s house. And Simon’s wife’s mother was taken with a great fever, and they required him for her.
39 Then he stood over her, and rebuked the fever, and it left her, and immediately she arose, and ministered unto them.
40 Now at the Sun setting, all they that had sick folks of divers diseases, brought them unto him, and he laid his hands on everyone of them, and healed them.
41 (O)[p]And devils also came out of many, crying, and saying, Thou art that Christ that Son of God: but he rebuked them, and suffered them not to say that they knew him to be that Christ.
42 [q]And when it was day, he departed, and went forth into a desert place, and the people sought him, and came to him, and kept him that he should not depart from them.
43 But he said unto them, Surely I must also preach the kingdom of God to other cities: for therefore am I sent.
44 And he preached in the Synagogues of Galilee.
