Chapter 3[a]

These were David’s sons who were born in Hebron: Amnon, the firstborn, the son of Ahinoam of Jezreel; Daniel, the second, the son of Abigail of Carmel; Absalom, the third, the son of Maacah, the daughter of Talmai, the king of Geshur; Adonijah, the fourth, the son of Haggith; Shephatiah, the fifth, the son of Abital; Ithream, the sixth, the son of Eglah. These six were born in Hebron where he reigned for seven years and six months. He reigned for thirty-three years in Jerusalem.

These were the children born in Jerusalem: Shimea, Shobab, Nathan, and Solomon. These four were from Bathsheba, the daughter of Ammiel. There were also Ibhar, Elishua, Eliphelet, Nogah, Nepheg, Japhia, Elishama, Eliada, and Eliphelet, nine of them in all. These were the sons of David, not counting his sons by his concubines. Tamar[b] was their sister.

10 [c]Solomon’s son was Rehoboam, Abijah his son, Asa his son, Jehoshaphat his son, 11 Joram his son, Ahaziah his son, Joash his son, 12 Amaziah his son, Azariah his son, Jotham his son, 13 Ahaz his son, Hezekiah his son, Manasseh his son, 14 Amon his son, and Josiah his son.

15 The sons of Josiah were Johanan his firstborn son, Jehoiakim, his second son, Zedekiah, his third son, and Shallum, his fourth son.

19 The sons of Pedaiah were Zerubbabel and Shimei.[d]

The children of Zerubbabel were Meshullam, Hananiah, Shelomith, their sister, 20 and five named Hashubah, Ohel, Berechiah, Hasadiah, and Jushab-hesed.

21 The descendants of Hananiah were Pelatiah, Jeshaiah, the sons of Rephaiah, the sons of Arnan, the sons of Obadiah, and the sons of Shecaniah.

22 The son of Shecaniah was Shemaiah, and the sons of Shemaiah were Hattush, Igal, Bariah, Neariah, and Shaphat. There were six of them.

23 The sons of Neariah were Elioenai, Hizkiah, and Azrikam. There were three of them.

24 The sons of Elioenai were Hodaviah, Eliashib, Pelaiah, Akkub, Johanan, Delaiah, and Anani. There were seven of them.

Chapter 4

The descendants of Judah were Perez, Hezron, Carmi, Hur, and Shobal.

Reaiah, the son of Shobal, was the father of Jahath, Jahath was the father of Ahumai and Lahad. These were the clans of the Zorathites.

These were the sons of Etam: Jezreel, Ishma, Idbash, and their sister Hazzelelponi.

Penuel was the father of Gedor, and Ezer the father of Hushah. These were the sons of Hur, the firstborn of Ephrathah, the father of Bethlehem.

Ashur, the father of Tekoa, had two wives: Helah and Naarah. Naarah bore him Ahuzzam, Hepher, Temeni, and Haahash-tari. They were the sons of Naarah.

The sons of Helah were Zereth, Izhar, and Ethnan.

Koz was the father of Anub, Zobebah, and the clans of Aharhel, the son of Harum.

[e]Jabez was the most honorable of his brothers. His mother named him Jabez because she said, “I bore him with pain.” 10 Jabez called upon the God of Israel saying, “Oh that you would bless me and enlarge my territory. May your hand be with me, and keep me from harm so that I might be free from grief.” God granted what he requested.

11 Chelub, Shuhah’s brother, was the father of Mehir, who was the father of Eshton.

12 Eshton was the father of Beth-rapha, Paseah, and Tehinnah, the father of Ir-nahash. These were the men of Recah.

13 The sons of Kenaz were Othniel[f] and Seraiah.

The sons of Othniel were Hathath and Meonothai.

14 Meonothai was the father of Ophrah.

Seraiah was the father of Joab, the father of Geharashim, for they were craftsmen.

15 The sons of Caleb, the son of Jephunneh were Ir, Elah, and Naam.

The son of Elah was Kenaz.

16 The sons of Jahallelel were Ziph, Ziphah, Tiria, and Asarel.

17 The sons of Ezrah were Jether, Mered, Epher, and Jalon. A wife of his gave birth to Miriam, Shammai, and Ishbah, the father of Eshtemoa. 18 His wife was from Egypt, and she gave birth to Jered, the father of Gedor, Heber, the father of Soco, and Jekuthiel, the father of Zanoah. These were the sons of Bithiah, Pharaoh’s daughter, whom Mered had married.

19 The sons of Hodiah’s wife, the sister of Naham were the fathers of Keilah the Garmite and Eshtemoa the Maachathite.

20 The sons of Shimon were Amnon, Rinnah, Ben-hanan, and Tilon.

The descendants of Ishi were Zoheth and Ben-zoheth.

21 The sons of Shelah, the son of Judah, were Er, the father of Lecah, Laadah, the father of Mareshah, and the clans of linen workers at Beth-ashbea, 22 Jokim, the men of Cozeba, Joash, and Saraph who ruled in Moab and Jashubi-lahem. These records are from ancient times. 23 They were potters who lived in Netaim and Gederah. They dwelt there and worked for the king.

24 Simeon. The sons of Simeon were Nemuel, Jamin, Jarib, Zerah, and Shaul. 25 Shallum was his son, Mibsam was his son, and Mishma was his son.

26 The descendants of Mishma were Hammuel, his son, Zaccur, his son, and Shimei, his son.

27 Shimei had sixteen sons and six daughters, but his brothers did not have many children so the whole clan did not become very large in Judah. 28 They lived in Beer-sheba, Moladah, Hazar-shual, 29 Bilhah, Ezem, Tolad, 30 Bethuel, Hormah, Ziklag, 31 Beth-marcaboth, Hazar-susim, Beth-biri, and Shaaraim. These were their cities up to the time of the reign of David. 32 Their dependent villages were Etam, Ain, Rimmon, Tochen, Ashan, five of them in all, 33 as well as all of the villages that surrounded these cities up to Baal. These were their settlements and their genealogies.

34 Meshobab, Jamlech, Joshah, the son of Amaziah, 35 Joel, Jehu, the son of Joshibiah, the son of Seraiah, the son of Asiel, 36 as well as Elioenai, Jaakobah, Jeshohaiah, Asaiah, Adiel, Jesimiel, Benaiah, 37 and Ziza, the son of Shiphi, the son of Allon, the son of Jedaiah, the son of Shimri, the son of Shemaiah— 38 these were the names of the leaders of their clans. Their families increased greatly. 39 They traveled toward the entrance of Gedor on the east side of the valley, to seek pastures for their flocks. 40 They found good, rich pastures and a spacious land that was quiet and peaceful. Some Hamites[g] had lived there from ancient times.

41 The men whose names are written here arrived during the days of Hezekiah, the king of Judah. They attacked those living there as well as the Meunites who were found there. They wiped them out, as is still true today. They dwelt in their place for there were pastures for their flocks there.

42 About five hundred of the Simeonites invaded the hill country of Seir led by Pelatiah, Neariah, Rephaiah, and Uzziel, the sons of Ishi. 43 They killed the rest of the Amalekites who had escaped, and they have lived there up to the present.

Hebrews 9

Chapter 9

The Ancient Worship.[a] Now the first covenant also had regulations for worship and an earthly sanctuary. For a tabernacle was constructed. In the outer section, called the Holy Place, were located the lampstand, the table, and the consecrated bread.

Behind the second veil was the tabernacle called the Holy of Holies in which stood the gold altar of incense and the ark of the covenant overlaid on all sides with gold. In that ark were the gold jar containing the manna, and Aaron’s staff that had sprouted buds, and the tablets of the covenant. Above it were the cherubim of glory overshadowing the place of atonement (but we cannot discuss these things in detail now). With these arrangements for worship having been made, the priests continually enter the first tabernacle to carry out their ritual duties. However, the high priest alone enters the second tabernacle, and he can do so only once a year, and not without the blood that he offers for himself and for the errors that the people had committed.

By this the Holy Spirit reveals to us that as long as the first tabernacle remains standing, the way into the sanctuary has not been disclosed. This is a symbol of the present time, during which the gifts and sacrifices that are offered are unable to cleanse the conscience of the worshiper. 10 They deal only with food and drink and various ceremonial washings, regulations in regard to the body that are imposed until the coming of the new order.

11 Christ Has Come.[b] But now Christ has arrived as the high priest of the good things that have come. He has passed through the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made by human hands, that is, not a part of this creation, 12 and he has entered once for all into the sanctuary not with the blood of goats and calves but with his own blood, thus obtaining eternal redemption.

13 The blood of goats and bulls and the sprinkling of ashes of a heifer sanctify those who have been defiled and restore bodily purity. 14 How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from acts that lead to death so that we may worship the living God.

15 A Covenant Sealed with the Blood of Christ.[c] For this reason, he is the mediator of a new covenant, so that those who have been called may receive the promised eternal inheritance, since his death has served to redeem the sins that were committed under the first covenant.

16 Now when a will is involved, it is obligatory to prove the death of the one who made it. 17 For a will takes effect only at death, since it has no force while the one who made it is still alive.

18 Hence, not even the first covenant was inaugurated without blood. 19 For when all the commandments of the Law had been proclaimed by Moses to all the people, he took the blood of calves and goats, together with water and scarlet wool and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people, 20 saying, “This is the blood of the covenant that God has commanded you to observe.”

21 And in the same way, he sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle and all the liturgical vessels. 22 Indeed, under the Law almost everything is purified by blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.

23 Therefore, it was necessary for the copies of the heavenly things to be purified with these rites, but the heavenly things themselves required still greater sacrifices.

24 Once and for All.[d] For Christ did not enter a sanctuary made by human hands, a mere copy of the true one, but he entered into heaven itself, so that he now appears in the presence of God on our behalf.

25 Nor was it his purpose to offer himself again and again, as the high priest enters into the sanctuary year after year with the blood that is not his own. 26 For then he would have had to suffer over and over again since the creation of the world. But as it is, he has appeared once and for all at the end of the ages to abolish sin by sacrificing himself.

27 And just as human beings are destined to die but once, and after that to face judgment, 28 so Christ, having been offered once to take away the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to bring salvation to those who are eagerly waiting for him.

Amos 3

Charges against Israel

Chapter 3

The First Word. O men of Israel, hear this word that the Lord has spoken against you, against the whole family that I brought up out of the land of Egypt:

Of all the families of the earth,
    you alone have I favored.
That is why I will punish you
    for all your iniquities.

The Lord Speaks: Who Would Not Prophesy?

Do two people travel together
    unless they have first agreed to do so?
Does a lion roar in the forest
    when it has no prey?
Does a young lion cry out from its den
    unless it has caught something?
Does a bird fall into a snare on the earth
    unless a trap has been set for it?
Does a snare spring up from the ground
    unless something has been caught in it?
Are people not alarmed
    if a trumpet sounds in the city?
If disaster strikes a city,
    can that occur without the approval of the Lord?[a]
Indeed, the Lord God does nothing
    without revealing his plan
    to his servants, the prophets.
The lion roars;
    who will not be frightened?
The Lord God has spoken;
    who will not prophesy?

Violence and Pillage in Their Palace

Proclaim this from the
    palaces of Ashdod
    and from the palaces of the land of Egypt:
“Assemble on the hills of Samaria
    and observe the great disorders there,
    as well as the oppression in her midst.”
10 For they do not know how to do what is right,
    says the Lord,
as they store up in their palaces
    their ill-gotten gains from violence and robbery.

11 Therefore, this is what the Lord God has to say:

An enemy shall surround your land;
    he will tear down your strongholds
    and pillage your palaces.

12 The Lord says further:

As the shepherd rescues from the jaws of a lion
    two legs or the tip of an ear,
so will the Israelites who live in Samaria be rescued
    with the corner of a couch or the edge of a cot.

I Will Deal with the Altars of Bethel

13 Listen and testify against the house of Jacob, says the Lord God, the God of hosts:

14 On the day when I punish Israel for its crimes,
    I will also deal with the altars of Bethel:
the horns of the altar shall be hacked off
    and fall to the ground.
15 I shall destroy the winter house
    as well as the summer house.
The houses of ivory will perish,
    and many mansions will be no more,
    says the Lord.

Psalm 146-147

The Concluding Hallel—Pss 146–150[a]

Psalm 146[b]

Trust in God, Creator and Redeemer

[c]Alleluia.

Praise the Lord, O my soul.[d]
    I will praise the Lord as long as I live;
    I will sing praise to my God throughout my life.[e]
Do not place your trust in princes,
    in mortal men who have no power to save.
When the spirit departs, they return to the earth;
    on that very day all their plans come to naught.[f]
[g]Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob,[h]
    whose hope is in the Lord, his God,
the Maker of heaven and earth,[i]
    the sea, and everything in them—
    the one who keeps faith forever.
He grants justice to the oppressed[j]
    and gives bread to the hungry.
The Lord releases prisoners
    and opens the eyes of those who cannot see.[k]
The Lord lifts up those who are bowed down;
    the Lord loves the righteous.
The Lord watches over the stranger
    and sustains the fatherless and the widow,[l]
    but he blocks the way of the wicked.
10 The Lord will reign forever,[m]
    your God, O Zion, for all generations.
Alleluia.

Psalm 147[n]

Hymn to the City of God

[o]Alleluia.

How good it is to sing praises to our God;
    how pleasant it is to give him fitting praise.[p]
The Lord restores Jerusalem
    and gathers together the dispersed people of Israel.[q]
He heals the brokenhearted
    and bandages their wounds.[r]
He fixes the number of the stars
    and assigns a name to each.[s]
Great is our Lord and awesome in power;
    his wisdom is without limit.[t]
The Lord sustains the poor
    but humbles the wicked in the dust.[u]
[v]Offer songs of thanksgiving to the Lord;
    play the lyre in honor of our God.
He veils the heavens with clouds,
    supplies the earth with rain,
    and makes the hills sprout with grass.[w]
He provides food for the animals
    and for the young ravens when they call.[x]
10 [y]He takes no pleasure in the strength of the horse,
    or delight in the fleetness of a runner.
11 The Lord takes pleasure in those who fear him,
    those who place their hope in his kindness.
12 [z]Praise the Lord, O Jerusalem!
    Glorify your God, O Zion!
13 For he strengthens the bars of your gates
    and blesses your children within you.[aa]
14 He brings peace to your borders
    and fills you with the finest of wheat.[ab]
15 He sends a command to the earth;
    his word runs with utmost speed.
16 He gives the snow like wool
    and scatters the frost like ashes.[ac]
17 He hurls down his hail like crumbs;
    who can withstand his cold?[ad]
18 He sends his word, and the ice melts;
    he stirs up his breezes, and the waters flow.
19 [ae]He has revealed his word to Jacob,
    his decrees and his judgments to Israel.
20 He has not done this for the other nations;
    they are not aware of his judgments.
Alleluia.
