2 Kings 16

16 3 Ahaz King of Judah consecrateth his son in fire. 5 Jerusalem is besieged. 9 Damascus is taken, and Rezin slain. 11 Idolatry. 19 The death of Ahaz. 20 Hezekiah succeedeth him.

The seventeenth year of Pekah the son of Remaliah, [a]Ahaz the son of Jotham King of Judah began to reign.

Twenty years old was Ahaz, when he began to reign, and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem, and did not uprightly in the sight of the Lord his God, like David his father:

But walked in the way of the kings of Israel, yea, and made his son to [b]go through the fire, after the abominations of the heathen, whom the Lord had cast out before the children of Israel.

Also he offered and burnt incense in the high places, and on the hills, and under every green tree.

(A)Then Rezin King of Aram and Pekah son of Remaliah king of Israel came up to Jerusalem, to fight: and they besieged Ahaz, but could not overcome [c]him.

At the same time Rezin king of Aram restored [d]Elath to Aram, and drove the Jews from Elath: so the Aramites came to Elath, and dwelt there unto this day.

Then Ahaz sent [e]messengers to Tiglath-Pileser king of Assyria, saying, I am thy servant and thy son: come up, and deliver me out of the hand of the king of Aram, and out of the hand of the king of Israel which rise up against me.

And Ahaz took the silver and the gold that was found in the [f]house of the Lord, and in the treasures of the king’s house, and sent a present unto the king of Assyria.

And the king of Assyria consented unto him: and the king of Assyria went up against Damascus. and when he had taken it, he carried the people away to Kir, and slew Rezin.

10 And king Ahaz went unto Damascus to meet Tiglath-Pileser king of Assyria: and when king Ahaz saw the altar that was at Damascus, he sent to Urijah the Priest the pattern of the altar, and the fashion of it, and all the workmanship thereof.

11 And Urijah the Priest made an altar [g]in all points like to that which King Ahaz had sent from Damascus, so did Urijah the Priest against king Ahaz came from Damascus.

12 So when the king was come from Damascus, the king saw the altar: and the king drew near to the altar, and offered [h]thereon.

13 And he burnt his burnt offering, and his meat offering, and poured his drink offering, and sprinkled the blood of his peace offerings besides the altar.

14 And set it by the brazen altar which was before the Lord, and brought it in further before the house between the altar and the house of the Lord, and set it on the [i]North side of the altar.

15 And king Ahaz commanded Urijah the Priest, and said, Upon the great altar set on fire in the morning the burnt offering, and in the even the meat offering, and the king’s burnt offering and his meat offering, with the burnt offering of all the people of the land, and their meat offering, and their drink offerings: and pour thereby all the blood of the burnt offering, and all the blood of the sacrifice, and the [j]brazen altar shall be for me to inquire of God.

16 And Urijah the Priest did according to all that King Ahaz had commanded.

17 And King Ahaz brake the borders of the bases, and took the caldrons from off them, and took down the sea from the brazen oxen that were under it, and put it upon a pavement of stones.

18 And the [k]veil for the Sabbath (that they had made in the house) and the king’s entry without turned he to the house of the Lord, [l]because of the king of Assyria.

19 Concerning the rest of the acts of Ahaz, which he did, are they not written in the book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah?

20 And Ahaz slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the city of David, and Hezekiah his son reigned in his stead.

Titus 2

2 He setteth out the duties of sundry persons and states, 6 and willeth him to instruct the Church in manners. 11 He draweth an argument from the end of our redemption, 12 which is, that we live godly and uprightly.

But [a]speak thou the things which become wholesome doctrine,

[b]That the elder men be watchful, grave, temperate, sound in the faith, in love, and in patience:

The elder women likewise, that they be in such behavior as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not subject to much wine, but teachers of honest things.

That they may instruct the young women to be sober minded, that they love their husbands, that they love their children,

That they be temperate, chaste, [c]keeping at home, good and (A)subject unto their husbands, that the word of God be not evil spoken of.

Exhort young men likewise, that they be sober minded.

[d]In all things show thyself an example of good works with uncorrupt doctrine, with [e]gravity, integrity,

And with the wholesome word, which cannot be condemned, that he which withstandeth, may be ashamed, having nothing concerning you to speak evil of.

(B)[f]Let servants be subject to their masters, and please them in all [g]things, not answering again,

10 Neither pickers, but that they show all good faithfulness, that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Savior in all things.

11 (C)[h]For that grace of God, that bringeth salvation unto all men, hath appeared,

12 And teacheth us, that we should deny ungodliness and [i]worldly lusts, and that we should live soberly and righteously, and godly in this present world,

13 [j]Looking for that blessed hope, and appearing of that glory of that mighty God, and of our Savior Jesus Christ.

14 Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purge us to be a [k]peculiar people unto himself, zealous of good works.

15 These things speak, and exhort, and convince with all [l]authority. See that no man despise thee.

Hosea 9

Of the hunger and captivity of Israel.

Rejoice not, O Israel for joy [a]as other people: for thou hast gone a whoring from thy God: thou hast loved [b]a reward upon every corn floor.

[c]The floor, and the winepress shall not feed them, and the new wine shall fail in her.

They will not dwell in the Lord’s land, but Ephraim will return to Egypt, and they will eat unclean things in Assyria.

They shall not offer [d]wine to the Lord, neither shall their sacrifices be pleasant unto him: but they shall be unto them as the bread of mourners: all that eat thereof, shall be polluted: for their bread [e]for their souls shall not come into the house of the Lord.

What will ye do [f]then in the solemn day, and in the day of the feast of the Lord?

For lo, they are gone from [g]destruction: but Egypt shall gather them up, and Memphis shall bury them: the nettle shall possess the pleasant places of their silver, and the thorn shall be in their tabernacles.

The days of visitation are come: the days of recompense are come: Israel shall know it: [h]the Prophet is a fool: the spiritual man is mad, for the multitude of thine iniquity: therefore the hatred is great.

The watchman of Ephraim [i]should be with my God: but the Prophet is the snare of a fowler in all his ways, and hatred in the house of his God.

They [j]are deeply set: they are corrupt as in the days of Gibeah: therefore he will remember their iniquity, he will visit their sins.

10 I found Israel like [k]grapes in the wilderness: I saw your fathers as the first ripe in the fig tree at her first time: but they went to Baal Peor, and separated themselves unto that shame, and their abominations were according to [l]their lovers.

11 Ephraim their glory shall flee away like a bird: from the birth [m]and from the womb, and from the conception.

12 Though they bring up their children, yet I will deprive them from being men: yea, woe to them, when I depart from them.

13 Ephraim, as I saw, is as a tree [n]in Tyre planted in a cottage: but Ephraim shall bring forth his children to the murderer.

14 O Lord, give them: what wilt thou give them? give them a [o]barren womb and dry breasts.

15 All their wickedness is in [p]Gilgal: for there do I hate them: for the wickedness of their inventions, I will cast them out of mine House: I will love them no more: all their princes are rebels.

16 Ephraim is smitten, their root is dried up: they can bring no fruit: yea, though they bring forth, yet will I slay even the dearest of their body.

17 My God will cast them away, because they did not obey him: and they shall wander among the nations.

Psalm 126-128

126 1 This Psalm was made after the return of the people from Babylon, and showeth that the means of their deliverance was wonderful after the seventy years of captivity forspoken by Jeremiah, in Jer. 25:12 and 29:10.

A song of degrees, or Psalm of David.

When the Lord brought again the captivity of Zion, we were like them that [a]dream.

Then was our mouth [b]filled with laughter, and our tongue with joy: then said they among the [c]heathen, The Lord hath done great things for them.

The Lord hath done great things for us, whereof we rejoice.

O Lord, bring again our captivity, as the [d]rivers in the South.

They that sow in tears, shall reap in joy.

They went weeping, and carried [e]precious seed: but they shall return with joy, and bring their sheaves.

127 1 He showeth that the whole estate of the world, both domestical and political, standeth by God’s mere providence and blessing, 3 And that to have children well nurtured, is an especial grace and gift of God.

A song of degrees, or Psalm of Solomon.

Except the Lord [f]build the house, they labor in vain that build it: except the Lord keep the [g]city, the keeper watcheth in vain.

It is in vain for [h]you to rise early, and to lie down late, and eat the bread [i]of sorrow: but he will surely give [j]rest to his beloved.

Behold, children are the inheritance of the Lord, and the fruit of the womb his reward.

As are the arrows in the hand of the strong man; so are the [k]children of youth.

Blessed is the man that hath his quiver full of them: for they [l]shall not be ashamed, when they speak with their enemies in the gate.

128 He showeth that blessedness appertaineth not to all universally, but to them only that fear the Lord, and walk in his ways.

A song of degrees.

Blessed is everyone that feareth the Lord, and walketh in his [m]ways.

When thou eatest the labors of thine [n]hands, thou shalt be blessed, and it shall be well with thee.

Thy wife shall be as the fruitful vine on the sides of thine house, and thy [o]children like the olive plants round about thy table.

Lo, surely thus shall the man be blessed, that feareth the Lord.

The Lord out of Zion shall [p]bless thee, and thou shalt see the wealth of [q]Jerusalem all the days of thy life.

Yea, thou shalt see thy children’s children, and peace upon Israel.
