Exodus 35

35 Moses assembled the whole community of the people of Israel and told them, “These are the things which the Lord has commanded you to do.”

The Sabbath

On six days work may be done, but the seventh day shall be a holy day for you, a sabbath of complete rest to the Lord. Whoever does any work on that day must be put to death. You must not even light a fire in any of your dwellings on the Sabbath day.

The Offering for the Construction of the Dwelling

Moses spoke to the whole community of the people of Israel. He told them what the Lord commanded:

From what you possess, gather a special offering[a] for the Lord. Whoever has a willing heart, let him bring these things as the Lord’s offering: gold, silver, and bronze; blue, purple, and scarlet material, fine linen; goats’ hair, rams’ skins dyed red, and the hides of sea cows; acacia wood, olive oil for the Light, spices for the anointing oil and for the fragrant incense, onyx stones, and stones to be mounted on the special vest and on the chest pouch.

10 Let every skilled craftsman among you come and make everything that the Lord has commanded: 11 the Dwelling, its tent and its outer coverings, its clasps, its framework, its crossbars, its posts, and its socket bases; 12 the ark and its poles, the atonement seat, the special veil that hides it;[b] 13 the table with its poles, all its vessels and accessories, and the Bread of the Presence; 14 also the lampstand for the Light, with its utensils, its lamps, and the oil for the Light; 15 and the altar for incense with its poles, the anointing oil, the fragrant incense; the screen for the door at the entrance to the tent; 16 the altar for burnt offerings with its bronze grate, its poles, and all its utensils; the basin and its pedestal; 17 the hangings for the courtyard, its posts, their socket bases, and the screen for the gate of the courtyard; 18 the stakes for the tent, the stakes for the courtyard, and their ropes; 19 the finely woven garments for ministering in the Holy Place, the holy garments for Aaron the priest, and the garments for his sons, to minister in the priest’s office.

20 So the whole community of Israel departed from the presence of Moses. 21 Then everyone whose heart moved him and everyone whose spirit was willing came back and brought offerings to the Lord for the construction of the Tent of Meeting and for all the things to be used in its services and for the holy garments. 22 They came back, both men and women, all those whose hearts were willing. They brought brooches, earrings, signet rings, armlets, and all kinds of gold jewelry.[c] Every person who came presented a wave offering of gold to the Lord. 23 Everyone who had blue, purple, and scarlet material, fine linen, goats’ hair, rams’ skins dyed red, and hides of sea cows brought them. 24 Everyone who presented an offering of silver and bronze brought it as the Lord’s special offering, and everyone who had acacia wood for any use in the project brought it. 25 All the women who were skilled spun thread with their hands and brought what they had spun: the blue, the purple, and the scarlet material and the fine linen. 26 All the women who were willing and skillful spun the goats’ hair. 27 The tribal leaders brought the onyx stones and the stones to be mounted on the vest and the pouch, 28 also the spices, and the olive oil for the Light, for the anointing oil, and for the fragrant incense. 29 The people of Israel brought a voluntary[d] offering to the Lord. Every man and woman whose heart was willing contributed to all the work which the Lord had commanded Moses to do.

The Craftsmen

30 Moses said to the people of Israel, “See, the Lord has called by name Bezalel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, from the tribe of Judah. 31 He has filled him with the Spirit of God, with wisdom, understanding, knowledge, and skill in all kinds of crafts. 32 He has the ability to create designs and to work in gold, silver, and bronze. 33 He can cut and engrave precious stones for mounting and can carve wood. He works skillfully in all kinds of crafts. 34 The Lord has also put into his heart the ability to teach others—both he and Oholiab son of Ahisamak, from the tribe of Dan. 35 He has filled them with skill to work in all kinds of crafts: designing, embroidering in blue, purple, and scarlet, working with fine linen, and weaving—all kinds of workmanship and designing.”

John 14

No Greater Love—in Peace

14 “Do not let your heart be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many mansions.[a] If it were not so, I would have told you. I am going to prepare a place for you.[b] And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and take you to be with me, so that you may also be where I am. You know where I am going, and you know the way.”

“Lord, we don’t know where you are going,” Thomas replied, “so how can we know the way?”

Jesus said to him, “I am the Way and the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. If you know me, you would also know my Father.[c] From now on you do know him and have seen him.”

“Lord,” said Philip, “show us the Father, and that is enough for us.”

“Have I been with you so long,” Jesus answered, “and you still do not know me, Philip? The one who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Don’t you believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I am telling you I am not speaking on my own, but the Father who remains in me is doing his works. 11 Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father is in me. Or else believe[d] because of the works themselves.

12 “Amen, Amen, I tell you: The one who believes in me will do the works that I am doing. And he will do even greater works than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 I will do whatever you ask in my name so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask me[e] for anything in my name, I will do it.

15 “If you love me, hold on to[f] my commands. 16 I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever. 17 He is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive because it does not see him or know him. You know him because he stays with you and will be in you.

18 “I will not leave you as orphans; I am coming to you. 19 In a little while the world will see me no longer, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. 20 In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. 21 The one who has my commands and holds on to them is the one who loves me. And the one who loves me will be loved by my Father. I too will love him and show myself to him.”

22 Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, what has happened that you are going to show yourself to us and not to the world?”

23 Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will hold on to my word. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. 24 The one who does not love me does not hold on to my words. The word that you are hearing is not mine, but it is from the Father who sent me.

25 “I have told you these things while staying with you. 26 But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and remind you of everything I told you.

27 “Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, and do not let it be afraid. 28 You heard me tell you, ‘I am going away and I am coming to you.’ If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father, because the Father is greater than I.

29 “I have told you now before it happens so that, when it does happen, you may believe. 30 I will not speak with you much longer, because the ruler of this world is coming. He has no power over me. 31 But I want the world to know that I love the Father and that I am doing exactly what the Father has instructed me.

“Get up. Let’s leave this place.”

Proverbs 11

Righteous Behavior

11 Dishonest scales are disgusting[a] to the Lord
but an accurate weight wins his approval.
When arrogance comes, shame follows,
but with humility comes wisdom.
The integrity of the upright guides them,
but the dishonesty of the treacherous destroys them.
Riches are of no help on the day of fury,
but righteousness saves from death.
The righteousness of honest people makes their way smooth,
but because of his wickedness a wicked person falls.
The righteousness of upright people rescues them,
but treacherous people are trapped by their own desire.
At the death of a wicked man, his hope will perish,
and his confidence in his strength[b] perishes.
A righteous person is rescued from trouble,
and a wicked person takes his place.
With his mouth the godless person destroys his neighbor,
but righteous people are rescued by knowledge.
10 When the righteous prosper, a city rejoices,
and when the wicked perish, there is a shout of joy.
11 Through the blessing of upright citizens, a city is raised up,
but by the mouth of the wicked, it is torn down.
12 A person who lacks sense despises his neighbor,
but an understanding person keeps silent.
13 A gossip goes around betraying secrets,
but a trustworthy spirit keeps a matter confidential.
14 Without guidance people fall,
but in many advisors there is safety.
15 Guaranteeing a loan for a stranger leads to trouble,
but one who hates to shake hands[c] remains secure.
16 A gracious woman takes hold of honor,
but ruthless men take hold of riches.[d]
17 A merciful man benefits his own soul,
but a cruel man brings trouble on his own flesh.
18 A wicked person earns deceptive wages,
but one who sows righteousness reaps a true reward.
19 Just as righteousness leads to life,
pursuing evil leads to death.
20 Perverted hearts are disgusting to the Lord,
but his favor rests on those whose way has integrity.
21 Be sure of this: An evil person will not go unpunished,
but the children of the righteous will escape.
22 The beauty of a woman who lacks moral judgment
is like a gold ring in a pig’s snout.
23 The desire of the righteous leads only to good.
The hope of the wicked leads to fury.
24 One person scatters his wealth, but it still increases.
Another hoards it unjustly, but this leads only to poverty.
25 A person who spreads blessings will be enriched.
One who gives a refreshing drink will be refreshed.
26 People curse the person who hoards grain,
but a blessing rests on the head of one who sells it.
27 Whoever searches for good seeks favor,
but whoever pursues evil will find it.
28 Whoever trusts his wealth will fall,
but righteous people will flourish like green plants.
29 Whoever troubles his household will inherit the wind,
and a stubborn fool will be a slave to a person with a wise heart.
30 The fruit of a righteous person is a tree of life,
and one who harvests souls is wise.
31 If a righteous person is paid back on earth,
how much more a wicked person or a sinner!

Ephesians 4

Members of Christ’s Body

As a prisoner in the Lord, therefore, I urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called. Live with all humility, gentleness, and patience, bearing with one another in love.

Make every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as also you were called in the one hope of your calling. There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all, and through all, and in us[a] all.

But to each one of us grace was given, according to the measure of the gift from Christ. That is why it says, “When he ascended on high, he took captivity captive and gave gifts to his people.”[b] Now what does it mean when it says “he ascended,” other than that he also had descended[c] to the lower parts, namely, the earth?[d] 10 He who descended is the same one who ascended far above all the heavens, so that he might fill all things. 11 He himself gave the apostles, as well as the prophets, as well as the evangelists, as well as the pastors and teachers, 12 for the purpose of training the saints for the work of serving,[e] in order to build up the body of Christ. 13 This is to continue until we all reach unity in the faith and knowledge of the Son of God, resulting in a mature man with a stature reaching to the measure of the fullness of Christ. 14 The goal is that we would no longer be little children, tossed by the waves and blown around by every wind of teaching, when people use tricks and invent clever ways to lead us astray. 15 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we would in all things grow up into Christ, who is the head. 16 From him the whole body, being joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows in accordance with Christ’s activity when he measured out each individual part. He causes the growth of the body so that it builds itself up in love.

Living Changed Lives

17 So I tell you this and testify to it in the Lord: Do not walk any longer as the Gentiles walk, in their futile way of thinking. 18 They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, due to the hardness of their hearts. 19 Because they have no sense of shame, they have given themselves over to sensuality, with an ever-increasing desire to practice every kind of impurity.

20 But you did not learn Christ in that way, 21 if indeed you have heard of him and were taught in him (since the truth is in Jesus). 22 As far as your former way of life is concerned, you were taught to take off the old self, which is corrupted by its deceitful desires, 23 and to be renewed continually in the spirit of your mind, 24 and to put on the new self, which has been created to be like God in righteousness and true holiness.

25 Therefore, after you put away lying, let each of you speak truthfully with your neighbor, because we are all members of one body. 26 “Be angry, yet do not sin.”[f] Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry. 27 Do not give the Devil an opportunity. 28 Let the one who has been stealing steal no longer. Instead, let him work hard doing what is good with his own hands, so that he has something to share with a person who is in need. 29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come from your mouths. Say only what is beneficial when there is a need to build up others, so that it will be a blessing to those who hear. 30 Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Get rid of every kind of bitterness, rage, anger, quarreling, and slander, along with every kind of malice. 32 Instead, be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving one another, just as God in Christ has forgiven us.[g]
