Chapter 3

A lengthy war ensued between the house of Saul and the house of David. As time went on, David grew steadily stronger, while the house of Saul became notably weaker.

Sons Born in Hebron.[a] Sons were born to David at Hebron. His firstborn was Amnon, whose mother was Ahinoam of Jezreel; his second was Chileab, whose mother was Abigail, the widow of Nabal of Carmel; his third was Absalom, whose mother was Maacah, the daughter of Talmai, the king of Geshur; the fourth was Adonijah, whose mother was Haggith; the fifth was Shephatiah, the son of Abital; the sixth was Ithream, the son of David’s wife Eglah. These were born to David in Hebron.

Ishbaal and Abner Quarrel. During the war between the house of Saul and the house of David, Abner had gradually been gaining power in the house of Saul. Now Saul had had a concubine whose name was Rizpah, the daughter of Aiah. And Ishbaal said to Abner: “Why have you slept with my father’s concubine?”

Abner became enraged at this insult of Ishbaal, and he said: “Am I nothing more than a dog’s head in Judah? I have continued to be loyal to the house of your father Saul and to his brothers and friends, and I have not betrayed you into the hands of David. Yet now you charge me with a crime involving a woman.

“May God punish Abner severely, and inflict even greater ills, if I fail to accomplish for David what the Lord swore to him. 10 I shall take the kingdom from the house of Saul and establish the throne of David over Israel and over Judah, from Dan to Beer-sheba.” 11 And Ishbaal did not dare to say another word in response, because he was afraid of him.

12 Abner and David Reconciled. Abner sent messengers on his own behalf to say to David: “Who should control the land? If you come to an agreement with me, I will give you my support in bringing all Israel over to you.” 13 [b]David replied: “Good! I will negotiate an agreement with you. However, I will impose one condition. You will not be allowed to appear in my presence unless you bring back Saul’s daughter, Michal, when you come to see me.”

14 Then David also sent messengers to Ishbaal, the son of Saul, with this demand: “Return to me my wife Michal whom I espoused after paying the ransom of one hundred foreskins of the Philistines.” 15 Therefore, Ishbaal summoned Michal and took her away from her husband Paltiel, the son of Laish. 16 However, her husband, weeping copiously, followed her as far as Horonaim, at which time Abner commanded him: “Go back,” and he returned home.

17 Abner then proceeded to confer with the elders of Israel. “For a long time now,” he said, “you have wanted David to be your king. 18 Now is the time for you to make that wish a reality, for the Lord has said of David: ‘By means of my servant David I will deliver my people Israel from the hand of the Philistines and from all their enemies.’ ” 19 Abner also spoke personally to the Benjaminites. After that he went to Hebron to notify David about everything that the people of Israel and the house of Benjamin had agreed to do.

20 When Abner, accompanied by twenty men, came to David at Hebron, David prepared a feast for Abner and the men who were with him. 21 Abner then said to David: “Allow me now to go and assemble all Israel for my lord the king, in order that they may make a covenant with you, and thus you will reign over all that your heart desires.” Therefore, David dismissed Abner, who went away in peace.

22 The Death of Abner. Just then, David’s men returned with Joab from a raid, bringing with them a large amount of plunder. By then Abner had been dismissed by David and was no longer in Hebron, for he had gone his way in peace. 23 When Joab and all of the soldiers with him arrived, Joab was informed that Abner, the son of Ner, had come to the king, and that the king had sent him on his way in peace.

24 Then Joab went to the king and said: “What have you done? Abner came to you. What motivated you to dismiss him and allow him to go away as an innocent man? 25 You must be aware that Abner, the son of Ner, came here with the purpose of deceiving you, in order to learn about your movements and to find out what you are doing.”

26 When Joab left David’s presence, he sent messengers to pursue Abner, and they brought him back from the cistern of Sirah. However, David knew nothing at all about this. 27 When Abner returned to Hebron, Joab pretended that he wanted to speak to him privately and took him aside at the city gate, where he stabbed him fatally in the stomach. Thus Abner died in retaliation for the murder of Asahel, the brother of Joab.

28 Later, when David heard the news, he said: “Before the Lord, I and my kingdom are forever innocent of the blood of Abner, the son of Ner. 29 May the guilt for this act fall on the head of Joab and his entire family. May the house of Joab never be unafflicted by men who suffer from running sores or leprosy or effeminacy or who are doomed to die by the sword or are in need of bread.” ( 30 Joel and his brother Abishai had murdered Abner because he had killed their brother Asahel at the battle of Gibeon.)

31 David Mourns Abner. Then David said to Joab and all the people who were with him: “Tear off your clothes, put on sackcloth, and mourn over Abner.” King David himself walked behind the bier. 32 After they buried Abner at Hebron, the king wept aloud at the grave of Abner, and all the people also wept. 33 Then the king sang this lament for Abner:

“Why should Abner have died
    the way a lawless brute dies?
34 Your hands were not bound,
    your feet were not fettered
As one falls at the hands of the wicked,
    you too have fallen.”

And all the people continued to weep for him.

35 After that, the people tried to persuade David to eat something while it was still day, but David swore: “May God deal with me severely, and even more terribly, if I eat bread or anything else prior to sunset.” 36 All the people took note of his pledge with approval, just as everything that the king did truly pleased them. 37 Therefore, on that day the people and all Israel were fully convinced that the king had no part in the killing of Abner, the son of Ner.

38 Then the king said to his servants: “You surely must realize that a prince and a great warrior has fallen this day in Israel. 39 And today, even though I have been anointed as the king, I feel weak and powerless with the realization that these men, the sons of Zeruiah, are too strong for me. May the Lord repay the evildoer as his evil crimes deserve.”

Chapter 14

Seek the Gifts That Build Up the Community.[a] Make love your aim, but strive earnestly after the spiritual gifts, especially for that of prophecy. If anyone speaks in tongues, he is speaking not to men but to God, and no one understands him, for he is speaking mysteries in the Spirit. On the other hand, the one who prophesies speaks to men for their building up, their encouragement, and their consolation.

Whoever speaks in a tongue builds himself up, but whoever prophesies builds up the Church. I wish that all of you could speak in tongues, but I would much prefer that you could prophesy. For the one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless the latter can interpret what he is saying so that the Church may be built up.

Now suppose, brethren, that I should come to you and speak in tongues. Of what value would I be to you if you were unable to discern from my words any revelation or knowledge or prophecy or instruction? Even inanimate things produce sound, such as a flute or a harp. If they do not produce distinct notes, how can anyone tell what tune is being played?

Or again, if the bugle call is unclear, who will get ready for battle? Similarly, if you speak in tongues and your speech is unintelligible, how will anyone be able to understand what you are saying? For you will be talking to empty air.

10 There are many different languages that are used in the world, and none of them is without meaning. 11 But if I do not comprehend the meaning of the language, I will be a foreigner to the speaker and he will be a foreigner to me. 12 Since you are eager to acquire spiritual gifts, try to excel in those that build up the Church.

13 Therefore, anyone who speaks in tongues should pray for the ability to interpret. 14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit is at prayer but my mind derives no benefit. 15 What then should I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my mind. I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my mind.

16 If you are praising only with the spirit, how will the uninstructed person who is present be able to answer “Amen” to your thanksgiving when he does not comprehend what you are saying? 17 Your thanksgiving may be inspiring, but the other person has not been edified.

18 I thank God that I speak in tongues more than any of you, 19 but when I am in the church I would prefer to speak five intelligible words to instruct others rather than ten thousand words in a tongue.

20 Brethren, do not be childish in your thinking. Be like infants in regard to evil, but in your thinking be mature. 21 In the Law[b] it is written,

“By people speaking strange tongues
    and by the lips of foreigners
I will speak to this people,
    and even so they will not listen to me,
says the Lord.”

22 Clearly, then, tongues are intended as a sign not for believers but for unbelievers, while prophecy is designed not for unbelievers but for believers.

23 Therefore, if the whole Church has assembled and everyone is speaking in tongues, would not any uninstructed person or any unbeliever on entering conclude that you are all out of your minds? 24 However, if everyone is prophesying and an unbeliever or uninstructed person should enter, he would be reproved by all and judged by all, 25 and the secrets of his heart would be revealed. Then he would fall down and worship God, declaring, “God is truly in your midst.”

26 Let Everything Be Done Properly and in an Orderly Fashion. And so, what then should be done, brethren? When you assemble, each of you should bring a psalm or some lesson or a revelation, or speak in a tongue, or offer an interpretation. Everything should be done with the goal in mind of building up. 27 If any of you speak in a tongue, let only two or at most three come forward, one at a time, and someone must interpret. 28 If no one is available to interpret, let those who speak in tongues be silent in the church and speak only to themselves and to God.

29 As for the prophets, let two or three speak, and let the rest weigh their words. 30 Should a revelation be made to someone else who is sitting there, let the one who is speaking stop. 31 You can all prophesy, but one at a time, so that all may receive instruction and encouragement. 32 Indeed, the spirits of the prophets are subject to their prophets’ control, 33 for God is not a God of disorder but of peace.

As in all the Churches of the saints, 34 [c]women are to keep silent at the assemblies. For they are not permitted to speak, since the Law asserts that they are to be subordinate. 35 If there is anything they wish to know, they should ask their husbands at home. It is improper for them to speak in the church.

36 Did the word of God originate with you? Or are you the only ones to whom it has come? 37 Anyone who claims to be a prophet or to have spiritual powers must recognize that what I am writing to you is a commandment of the Lord. 38 Anyone who does not acknowledge this should be ignored.

39 Therefore, brethren, be eager to prophesy and do not forbid speaking in tongues. 40 But ensure that everything is done properly and in an orderly fashion.

Ezekiel 12

Chapter 12

Acts Symbolic of the Exile.[a] This word of the Lord came to me: Son of man, you are living among a rebellious people. They have eyes with which to see, but they do not see, and they have ears with which to hear, but they do not hear, for they are rebellious by their very nature.

Therefore, son of man, while they observe you, pack up your belongings and set off from your home into exile during the day. Perhaps this will cause them to understand that they are a rebellious people. Bring out your belongings during the day as they are watching, and in the evening, again as they watch, go forth like one who has been driven into exile.

Then, as they continue to observe you, dig a hole in the wall and make your way through it. In their presence, lift your pack onto your shoulder and set out into the darkness. Cover your face so that you may not see the land, for I have established you as a sign for the house of Israel.

I did exactly what I had been commanded. In the daytime I brought out my belongings that had been packed for exile, and in the evening I dug through the wall with my own hands. While they looked on, I set out in the darkness, shouldering my burden.

On the following morning, this word of the Lord was addressed to me: Son of man, did the house of Israel, that rebellious people, not even ask you what you were doing? 10 Say to them: Thus says the Lord God: This oracle concerns the prince in Jerusalem and the entire house of Israel living within its territory. 11 Tell them: I am a sign for you. As I have done, so will it be done to them. As captives they will go into exile. 12 Their prince who is among them will shoulder his pack in the darkness and go out through a hole that he has dug in the wall. He will cover his face so that he cannot see the land.

13 However, I will spread my net over him, and he will be caught in my snare. I will take him to Babylon, into the land of the Chaldeans, where he will die without ever seeing it. 14 As for his retinue, his attendants, and all his troops, I will scatter them to the four winds and pursue them with the sword.

15 Then they will know that I am the Lord when I disperse them among the nations and scatter them throughout foreign countries. 16 However, I will allow a few of them to escape the sword, famine, and pestilence so that they may relate all of their abominable practices to the nations where they have been exiled. Thus they will know that I am the Lord.

17 Then the word of the Lord came to me: 18 Son of man, tremble as you eat your bread, and shake with anxiety as you drink your water, 19 and you are to say to the people of that land: Thus says the Lord about those who live in Jerusalem and in the land of Israel: They will eat their bread in fearfulness and drink their water in despair, for their land will be stripped of everything within it because of the violence of all those who live there. 20 The inhabited cities will lie in ruins, and the land will be a desolate waste. Thus you will know that I am the Lord.

21 Fulfillment of Visions. This word of the Lord then came to me: 22 Son of man, there is a saying that has become fashionable in regard to the land of Israel: “The days drag by, and no visions are ever fulfilled.” 23 Therefore, tell the people: Thus says the Lord God: I will put an end to this proverb, and it will never again be spoken in the land of Israel.

Rather, say to them: The days are close at hand when every vision will be fulfilled. 24 There will no longer be any false visions or deceptive divinations within the house of Israel. 25 For I, the Lord, will speak, and what I say will come true without the slightest delay. In your lifetime, O rebellious house, whatever I speak will be fulfilled, says the Lord God.

26 This word of the Lord then came to me: 27 Son of man, the house of Israel is saying, “The vision that this man relates is meant to be fulfilled in the far distant future.” 28 Therefore say to them, “Thus says the Lord God: The fulfillment of my words will not be delayed any longer. What I have said will be done now. This is the word of the Lord God.”

Have mercy on me, O God,
    in accord with your kindness;[c]
in your abundant compassion
    wipe away my offenses.
Wash me completely from my guilt,
    and cleanse me from my sin.
For I am fully aware of my offense,
    and my sin is ever before me.
Against you, you alone,[d] have I sinned;
    I have done what is evil in your sight.
Therefore, you are right in accusing me
    and just in passing judgment.
Indeed, I was born in iniquity,
    and in sin did my mother conceive me.[e]
But you desire sincerity of heart;[f]
    and you endow my innermost being with wisdom.
Sprinkle me with hyssop[g] so that I may be cleansed;
    wash me until I am whiter than snow.
10 Let me experience joy and gladness;
    let the bones you have crushed exult.
11 Hide your face from my sins,
    and wipe out all my offenses.
12 Create[h] in me a clean heart, O God,
    and renew a resolute spirit within me.
13 Do not cast me out from your presence
    or take away from me your Holy Spirit.[i]

    and grant me the strength of a generous spirit.
15 I will teach your ways to the wicked,
    and sinners will return to you.
16 Deliver me from bloodguilt,[j] O God,

    and my mouth will proclaim your praise.
18 For you take no delight in sacrifice;
    if I were to make a burnt offering,
    you would refuse to accept it.[k]
19 My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit;
    a contrite and humble heart,[l] O God,
    you will not spurn.
20 [m]In your kindness, deal favorably with Zion;
    build up the walls of Jerusalem.
21 Then you will delight in righteous sacrifices,
    in burnt offerings and whole oblations,
    and young bulls will be offered on your altar.
