Deuteronomy 31

31 2, 7 Moses preparing himself to die, appointeth Joshua to rule the people. 9 He giveth the law to the Levites, that they should read it to the people. 19 God giveth them a song as a witness between him and them. 23 God confirmeth Joshua. 29 Moses showeth them that they will rebel after his death.

Then Moses went and spake these words unto all Israel,

And said unto them, I am an hundred and twenty years old this day: I [a]can no more go out and in: also the Lord hath said unto me, (A)Thou shalt not go over this Jordan.

The Lord thy God he will go over before thee: he will destroy these nations before thee, and thou shalt possess them. (B)Joshua, he shall go before thee, as the Lord hath said.

And the Lord shall do unto them, as he did to (C)Sihon and to Og kings of the Amorites, and unto their land whom he destroyed.

And the Lord shall give them [b]before you, that ye may do unto them according unto every (D)commandment which I have commanded you.

Pluck [c]up your hearts therefore, and be strong: dread not, nor be afraid of them: for the Lord thy God himself doth go with thee: he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.

¶ And Moses called Joshua, and said unto him in the sight of all Israel, Be [d]of a good courage and strong: for thou shalt go with this people unto the land which the Lord hath sworn unto their fathers, to give them, and thou shalt give it them to inherit.

And the Lord himself doth [e]go before thee: he will be with thee: he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee: fear not therefore, nor be discomforted.

¶ And Moses wrote this Law, and delivered it unto the Priests the sons of Levi (which bare the Ark of the covenant of the Lord) and unto all the Elders of Israel.

10 And Moses commanded them, saying, (E)Every seventh year (F)when the year of freedom shall be in the feast of the Tabernacles:

11 When all Israel shall come to appear [f]before the Lord thy God, and the place which he shall choose, thou shalt read this Law before all Israel that they may hear it.

12 Gather the people together: men, and women, and children, and thy stranger that is within thy gates, that they may hear, and that they may learn, and fear the Lord your God, and keep and observe all the words of this Law,

13 And that their children which [g]have not known it, may hear it, and learn to fear the Lord your God, as long as ye live in the land, whither ye go over Jordan to possess it.

14 ¶ Then the Lord said unto Moses, Behold, thy days are come, that thou must die: Call Joshua, and stand ye in the Tabernacle of the Congregation that I may give him a [h]charge. So Moses and Joshua went, and stood in the Tabernacle of the Congregation.

15 And the Lord appeared in the Tabernacle in the pillar of a [i]cloud: and the pillar of the cloud stood over the door of the Tabernacle.

16 ¶ And the Lord said unto Moses, Behold, thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, and this people will rise up, and go a whoring after the gods of a strange land (whither they go to dwell therein) and will forsake me: and break my covenant which I have made with them.

17 Wherefore my wrath will wax hot against them at that day, and I will forsake them, and will [j]hide my face from them: then they shall be consumed, and many adversities and tribulations shall come upon them: so then they will say, Are not these troubles come upon me, because God is not with me?

18 But I will surely hide my face in that day, because of all the evil which they shall commit, in that they are turned unto other gods.

19 Now therefore write ye this [k]song for you, and teach it the children of Israel: put it in their mouths, that this song may be my witness against the children of Israel.

20 For I will bring them into the land (which I sware unto their fathers) that floweth with milk and honey: and they shall eat and fill themselves, and wax fat: [l]then shall they turn unto other gods, and serve them, and contemn me, and break my covenant.

21 And then when many adversities and tribulations shall come upon them, this song shall [m]answer them to their faces as a witness: for it shall not be forgotten out of the mouths of their posterity: for I know their imagination, which they go about even now, before I have brought them into the land which I sware.

22 ¶ Moses therefore wrote this song the same day, and taught it the children of Israel.

23 And God gave Joshua the son of Nun a charge, and said, (G)Be strong and of a good courage: for thou shalt bring the children of Israel into the land, which I sware unto them, and I will be with thee.

24 ¶ And when Moses had made an end of writing the words of this Law in a book until he had finished them,

25 Then Moses commanded the Levites, which bare the Ark of the covenant of the Lord, saying,

26 Take the book of this Law, and put ye it in the side of the Ark of the covenant of the Lord your God, that it may be there for a [n]witness against thee.

27 For I know thy rebellion and thy stiff neck: behold, I being yet alive with you this day, ye are rebellious against the Lord: how much more then after my death?

28 Gather unto me all the Elders of your tribes, and your [o]officers, that I may speak these words in their audience, and call heaven and earth to record against them.

29 For I am sure that after my death, ye will utterly be corrupt and turn from the way which I have commanded you: therefore evil will come upon you at the length, because ye will commit evil in the sight of the Lord, by provoking him to anger through the [p]work of your hands.

30 Thus Moses spake in the audience of all the Congregation of Israel the words of this song, until he had ended them.

Psalm 119:97-120

MEM

97 Oh how love I thy law! it is my meditation [a]continually.

98 By thy commandments thou hast made me wiser than mine enemies: for they are ever with me.

99 I have had more [b]understanding than all my teachers: for thy testimonies are my meditation.

100 I understood more than the ancient, because I kept thy precepts.

101 I have refrained my feet from every evil way, that I might keep thy word.

102 I have not declined from thy judgments: for [c]thou didst teach me.

103 How sweet are thy promises unto my mouth! yea, more than honey unto my mouth.

104 By thy precepts I have gotten understanding: therefore I hate all the ways of falsehood.

NUN

105 Thy word is a [d]lantern unto my feet, and a light unto my paths.

106 I have [e]sworn and will perform it, that I will keep thy righteous judgments.

107 I am very sore afflicted: O Lord, quicken me according to thy word.

108 O Lord, I beseech thee, accept the [f]free offering of my mouth, and teach me thy judgments.

109 My [g]soul is continually in mine hand: yet do I not forget thy law.

110 The wicked have laid a snare for me: but I swerved not from thy precepts.

111 Thy testimonies have I taken as an [h]heritage forever: for they are the joy of mine heart.

112 I have applied mine heart to fulfill thy statutes always, even unto the end.

SAMECH

113 I hate [i]vain inventions: but thy Law do I love.

114 Thou art my refuge and shield, and I trust in thy word.

115 [j]Away from me, ye wicked: for I will keep the commandments of my God.

116 Stablish me according to thy promise, that I may live, and disappoint me not of mine hope.

117 [k]Stay thou me, and I shall be safe, and I will delight continually in thy statutes.

118 Thou hast trodden down all them that depart from thy statutes: for their [l]deceit is vain.

119 Thou hast taken away all the wicked of the earth like [m]dross: therefore I love thy testimonies.

120 My flesh [n]trembleth for fear of thee, and I am afraid of thy judgments.

Isaiah 58

58 1 The office of God’s ministers. 2 The works of the hypocrites. 6 The fast of the faithful. 13 Of the true Sabbath.

Cry [a]aloud, spare not: lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and show my people their transgression, and to the house of Jacob their sins.

Yet they [b]seek me daily, and will know my ways, even as a nation that did righteously, and had not forsaken the statutes of their God: they ask of me the ordinances of justice: they will draw near unto God, saying,

[c]Wherefore have we fasted, and thou seest it not? we have punished ourselves, and thou regardest it not. Behold, in the day of your fast you will seek [d]your will, and require all your debts.

Behold, ye fast to strife and debate, and to smite with the fist of wickedness: ye shall not fast as ye do today, to make your voice to be [e]heard above.

Is it such a fast that I have chosen, that a man should afflict his soul for a day, and to bow down his head, as a bull rush, and to lie down in sackcloth and ashes? wilt thou call this a fasting, or an acceptable day to the Lord?

Is not this the fasting that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to take off the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every [f]yoke?

Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that wander, unto thine house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him, and hide not thyself from [g]thine own flesh?

Then shall thy [h]light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall grow speedily: thy [i]righteousness shall go before thee, and the glory of the Lord shall embrace thee.

Then shalt thou call, and the Lord shall answer: thou shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I am: if thou take away from the midst of thee the yoke, the putting forth of the [j]finger, and wicked speaking:

10 If thou [k]pour out thy soul to the hungry, and refresh the troubled soul: then shall thy light spring out in the [l]darkness, and thy darkness shall be as the noon day.

11 And the Lord shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones, and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not.

12 And they shall be of thee, that shall build the old [m]waste places: thou shalt raise up the foundations for many generations, and thou shalt be called the repairer of the breach, and the restorer of the paths to dwell in.

13 If thou [n]turn away thy foot from the Sabbath, from doing thy will on mine Holy day, and call the Sabbath a delight to consecrate it, as glorious to the Lord, and shalt honor him, not doing thine own ways, nor seeking thine own will, nor speaking a vain word,

14 Then shalt thou delight in the Lord, and I will cause thee to mount upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.

Matthew 6

1 Alms. 5 Prayer. 14 Forgiving our brother. 16 Fasting. 19 Our treasure. 20 We must succor the poor. 24 God and riches. 25 Careful seeking for meat and drink, and apparel, forbidden. 33 The kingdom of God and his righteousness.

Take heed that ye give not your [a]alms before men to be seen of them, or else ye shall have no [b]reward of your Father which is in heaven.

(A)Therefore when thou givest thine alms, thou shalt not make a trumpet to be blown before thee, as the [c]hypocrites do in the Synagogues and in the streets, to be praised of men. Verily I say unto you, they have their reward.

But when thou doest thine alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth,

That thine alms may be in secret, and thy Father that seeth in secret, he will reward thee openly.

[d]And when thou prayest, be not as the hypocrites: for they love to stand and pray in the Synagogues, and in the corners of the streets, because they would be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, they have their reward.

But when thou prayest, enter into thy chamber: and when thou hast shut thy door, pray unto thy Father which is in secret, and thy Father which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.

Also when ye pray, use no [e]vain repetitions as the Heathen: for they think to be heard for their much babbling.

Be ye not like them therefore: for your Father knoweth whereof ye have need, before ye ask of him.

[f]After this manner therefore pray ye, (B)Our father which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done even in earth as it is in heaven.

11 Give us this day our [g]daily bread.

12 And forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors.

13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us (C)from [h]evil: for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory for ever. Amen.

14 (D)[i]For if ye do forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.

15 But if ye do not forgive men their trespasses, no more will your father forgive you your trespasses.

16 [j]Moreover, when ye fast, look not sour as the hypocrites: for they [k]disfigure their faces, that they might seem unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you that they have their reward.

17 But when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face,

18 That thou seem not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret, will reward thee openly.

19 [l]Lay not up treasures for yourselves upon the earth, where the moth and canker corrupt, and where thieves dig through and steal.

20 (E)But lay up treasures for yourselves in heaven, where neither the moth nor canker corrupteth, and where thieves neither dig through nor steal.

21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

22 (F)[m]The light of the body is the eye: if then thine [n]eye be single, thy whole body shall be light.

23 But if thine eye be wicked, then all thy body shall be dark. Wherefore if the light that is in thee, be darkness, how great is that darkness?

24 (G)[o]No man can serve [p]two masters: for either he shall hate the one, and love the other, or else he shall lean to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and [q]riches.

25 (H)[r]Therefore I say unto you, be not careful for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink: nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more worth than meat? and the body than raiment?

26 Behold the fowls of the [s]heaven: for they sow not, neither reap, nor carry into the barns, yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?

27 Which of you by [t]taking care is able to add one cubit unto his stature?

28 And why care ye for raiment? Learn how the Lilies of the field do grow: they [u]are not wearied, neither spin:

29 Yet I say unto you, that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

30 Wherefore if God so clothe the grass of the field which is today, and tomorrow is cast into the oven, shall he not do much more unto you, O ye of little faith?

31 Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or what shall we drink? or wherewith shall we be clothed?

32 (For after all these things seek the Gentiles) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.

33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness, and all these things shall be ministered unto you.

34 Care not then for the morrow, for the morrow shall care for itself: the day hath enough with his own grief.
