Daily Reading for Personal Growth, 40 Days with God
10 “Two men went up[a] to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee[b] and the other a tax collector.[c] 11 The Pharisee stood and prayed about himself like this:[d] ‘God, I thank[e] you that I am not like other people:[f] extortionists,[g] unrighteous people,[h] adulterers—or even like this tax collector.[i] 12 I fast twice[j] a week; I give a tenth[k] of everything I get.’ 13 The tax collector, however, stood[l] far off and would not even look up[m] to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God, be merciful[n] to me, sinner that I am!’[o] 14 I tell you that this man went down to his home justified[p] rather than the Pharisee.[q] For everyone who exalts[r] himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted.”
