Inheritance Through Marriage
36 The leaders[a] of the families[b] of the clans of descendants[c] of Gilead the son of Makir, the son of Manasseh, of the clans of the descendants[d] of Joseph came near and spoke before[e] Moses and before[f] the leaders[g] of the families[h] of the Israelites.[i] 2 And they said, “Yahweh commanded my lord to give the land by lot as an inheritance to the Israelites,[j] and my lord was commanded by Yahweh to give the inheritance of Zelophehad our brother to his daughters. 3 But if they become wives to one of the sons from another tribe of the Israelites,[k] their inheritance will disappear from the inheritance of our ancestors,[l] and it will be added to the inheritance of the tribe to which they belong; the lot of our inheritance would disappear. 4 When the Jubilee of the Israelites[m] comes,[n] it will be added to the inheritance of the tribe to which they belong; and their inheritance will disappear from the tribe of our father.”
5 Then Moses commanded the Israelites[o] by the command of Yahweh, saying, “The tribe of the descendants[p] of Joseph is right regarding what they are speaking. 6 This is the word that Yahweh commanded the daughters of Zelophehad, saying, ‘Let them marry[q] whomever they like;[r] only they must marry[s] from within the clan of the tribe of their father. 7 Thus an inheritance of the Israelites[t] will not go around from tribe to tribe. Rather, the inheritance of each tribe of his father will remain with the Israelites.[u] 8 Every daughter who possesses an inheritance from the tribes of the Israelites[v] will marry[w] one of the clan of the tribe of her father, so that the Israelites[x] will possess the inheritance of his ancestors.[y] 9 Therefore an inheritance will not go around from one tribe to another tribe because the tribes of the Israelites[z] will each hold to their own inheritance.’”
10 Just as Yahweh commanded to Moses, so the daughters of Zelophehad did: 11 Mahlah, Tirzah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Noah, the daughters of Zelophehad, married[aa] the sons of their uncles. 12 They married[ab] those from the sons of Manasseh son of Joseph, and their inheritance remained[ac] among the tribe of the clan of their ancestors.[ad]
13 These were the commands and the stipulations that Yahweh commanded by the hand of Moses[ae] to the Israelites[af] on the desert-plateaus of Moab by the Jordan across Jericho.
Preamble
1 These are the words that Moses spoke to all of Israel on the other side of[ag] the Jordan in the desert,[ah] in the desert plateau[ai] opposite Suph, between Paran and between Tophel and Laban and Hazeroth and Dizahab. 2 It is a journey of eleven days[aj] from Herob by the way of Mount Seir[ak] up to Kadesh Barnea.
3 And it was[al] in the fortieth year, on the eleventh month, on the first day of the month, Moses spoke to the Israelites[am] according to all that Yahweh had instructed him to speak to them. 4 This happened after defeating[an] Sihon king of the Amorites, who was reigning[ao] in Heshbon, and Og the king of Bashan, who was reigning[ap] in Ashtaroth in Edrei. 5 On the other side of [aq] the Jordan in the land of Moab Moses began to explain this law,[ar] saying:[as]
Historical Prologue
6 “Yahweh our God spoke to us at Horeb, saying,[at] ‘You have stayed long enough[au] at this mountain. 7 Turn now and move on,[av] and go into the hill of the Amorites[aw] and to all of the neighboring regions[ax] in the Jordan Valley[ay] in the hill country and in the Negev and in the coastal area along the sea, into the land of the Canaanites[az] and into the Lebanon, as far as the great river Euphrates. 8 Look, I have set the land before you;[ba] go and take possession of the land that Yahweh swore to your ancestors,[bb] to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give it to them and to their offspring after them.’
9 “And I spoke to them at that time, saying,[bc] ‘I am not able to bear you alone. 10 Yahweh your God has multiplied you, and look; you are today as the stars of the heaven in number.[bd] 11 Yahweh, the God of your ancestors,[be] may he add to you as you are now a thousand times, and may he bless you just as he promised you.[bf] 12 How can I bear you by myself,[bg] your burden and your load and your strife? 13 Choose for yourselves wise and discerning and knowledgeable men[bh] for each of your tribes, and I will appoint them as your leaders.’
14 “And you answered me, and you said, ‘The thing you have said to do is good.’ 15 And so I took the leaders of your tribes, wise and knowledgeable men, and then I appointed them as leaders over you as commanders of groups of thousands and commanders of groups of hundreds and commanders of groups of fifties and commanders of groups of tens as officials for your tribes. 16 And at that time I instructed your judges, saying, ‘hear out your fellow men,[bi] and then judge fairly[bj] between a man and between his brother and between his opponent who is a resident alien.[bk] 17 You must not be partial[bl] in your judgment; [bm] hear out the small person as also the great person; do not be intimidated by any person,[bn] because the judgment is God’s; and the case that is too difficult[bo] for you, bring it to me, and I will hear it out.’ 18 And so I instructed you at that time concerning all of the things that you should do.
19 “Then we set out from Horeb, and we went through the whole of that great and terrible desert that you saw on the way to the hill country of the Amorites[bp] as Yahweh our God had commanded us, and so we came up to Kadesh Barnea. 20 I said to you, ‘You have reached[bq] the hill country of the Amorites[br] that Yahweh our God is giving to us. 21 See, Yahweh your God has set before you the land; go up and possess it as Yahweh the God of your ancestors[bs] said to you; do not fear and do not be dismayed.’
22 “Then all of you approached me, and you said, ‘Let us send men before us,[bt] and let them explore the land for us, and let them bring back a report[bu] to us concerning the way that we should take[bv] and concerning the cities that we shall come to.’ 23 The plan was good in my opinion,[bw] and so I took from among you twelve men, one from each tribe.[bx] 24 And they set out[by] and went up into the hill country,[bz] and they went up to the wadi[ca] of Eschol, and they spied out the land. 25 They took in their hands[cb] some of the fruit[cc] of the land, and they brought it down to us, and they brought to us back a report,[cd] and they said, ‘The land that Yahweh our God is giving to us is good.’ 26 But you were not willing to go up, and you rebelled against the command[ce] of Yahweh your God. 27 And you grumbled in your tents, and you said, ‘Because of the hatred of Yahweh toward us he has brought us out from the land of Egypt to give us into the hand of the Amorites[cf] to destroy us. 28 Where can we go up? Our brothers have made our hearts melt,[cg] saying,[ch] “The people are greater[ci] and taller than we are,[cj] and there are great fortified cities reaching up to heaven, and we saw the sons of the Anakites living there.”’
29 “And so I said to you, ‘Do not be terrified, and do not fear them. 30 Yahweh your God, who is going before you,[ck] will himself[cl] fight for you, just as[cm] he did for you in Egypt before your eyes, 31 and just as he did in the wilderness[cn] when[co] you saw that[cp] Yahweh your God carried you, just as someone[cq] carries his son, all along the way that you traveled until you reached[cr] this place.’ 32 But through all of this you did not trust in Yahweh your God, 33 who goes[cs] before you[ct] on your[cu] way, seeking a place for your encampment, in fire at night and in a cloud by day, to show you the way that you should go.[cv]
34 “Then Yahweh heard the sound of your words, and he was angry, and he swore, saying,[cw] 35 ‘No one of these men[cx] of this evil generation will see the good land that I swore to give to your ancestors,[cy] 36 except Caleb, the son of Jephunneh; he himself[cz] shall see it, and to him I will give the land upon which he has trodden and to his sons[da] because he followed Yahweh unreservedly.’[db] 37 Even with me Yahweh was angry because of you, saying, ‘Not even you shall enter there. 38 Joshua, the son of Nun, your assistant,[dc] will go there; encourage him because he will cause Israel to inherit it. 39 And your little children, who you thought shall become plunder, and your sons, who do not today know good or bad, shall themselves[dd] go there, and I will give it to them, and they shall take possession of it. 40 But you turn and set out in the direction of the wilderness by way of the Red Sea.’[de]
41 “You replied and said to me, ‘We have sinned against Yahweh, and now we will go up and fight according to all that Yahweh our God commanded us’; and so each man fastened on his battle gear,[df] and you regarded it as easy to go up into the hill country. 42 So Yahweh said to me, ‘Say to them, “You shall not go up, and you shall not fight because I am not in your midst; you will be defeated before[dg] your enemies.”’ 43 So I spoke to you, but you did not listen; you rebelled against the command of Yahweh;[dh] you behaved presumptuously, and you went up into the hill country. 44 The Amorites living in the hill country went out to oppose you[di] and chased you as a swarm of wild honey bees do; and so they beat[dj] you down in Seir as far as Hormah. 45 So you returned and wept before Yahweh;[dk] but Yahweh did not listen to your voice and did not pay any attention to you. 46 You stayed in Kadesh many days; such were the days that you stayed there.
29 And Levi gave a great banquet for him in his house, and there was a large crowd of tax collectors and others who were reclining for the meal with them. 30 And the Pharisees and their scribes began to complain[a] to his disciples, saying, “Why do you eat and drink with the tax collectors and sinners?” 31 And Jesus answered and[b] said to them, “Those who are healthy do not have need of a physician, but those who are sick.[c] 32 I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.”
On Fasting
33 And they said to him, “The disciples of John fast often and make prayers—likewise also the disciples[d] of the Pharisees—but yours are eating and drinking!” 34 So he[e] said[f] to them, “You are not able to make the bridegroom’s attendants[g] fast as long as the bridegroom is with them, are you?[h] 35 But days will come, and when the bridegroom is taken away from them, then they will fast in those days.” 36 And he also told a parable to them: “No one tears a patch from a new garment and[i] puts it[j] on an old garment. Otherwise, he will have torn the new also, and the old will not match the patch that is from the new. 37 And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the new wine will burst the wineskins, and it will be spilled and the wineskins will be destroyed. 38 But new wine must be put into new wineskins. 39 And no one after[k] drinking old wine[l] wants new, because he says, ‘The old is just fine!’”
Plucking Grain on the Sabbath
6 Now it happened that on a Sabbath he went through the grain fields, and his disciples were picking and eating the heads of grain, rubbing them[m] in their[n] hands. 2 But some of the Pharisees said, “Why are you doing what is not permitted on the Sabbath? 3 And Jesus answered and[o] said to them, “Have you not read this, what David did when he and those who were with him were hungry— 4 how he entered into the house of God and took the bread of the presentation, which it is not permitted to eat (except the priests alone), and[p] ate it[q] and gave it[r] to those with him?” 5 And he said to them, “The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”
A Man with a Withered Hand Healed
6 Now it happened that on another Sabbath he entered into the synagogue and was teaching, and a man was there, and his right hand was withered. 7 So the scribes and the Pharisees were watching closely[s] to see if he would heal on the Sabbath, in order that they could find a reason[t] to accuse him. 8 But he knew their thoughts and said to the man who had the withered hand, “Get up and stand in the middle,” and he got up and[u] stood there. 9 And Jesus said to them, “I ask you whether it is permitted on the Sabbath to do good or to do evil, to save a life or to destroy it?”[v] 10 And after[w] looking around at them all, he said to him, “Stretch out your hand,” and he did, and his hand was restored. 11 But they were filled with fury, and began discussing[x] with one another what they might do to Jesus.
Thanksgiving to God for His Works
For the music director. A song. A psalm.[a]
66 Shout joyfully to God, all the earth.
2 Sing the glory of his name.
Set forth his glorious praise.[b]
3 Say to God, “How awesome are your works!
Because of the greatness of your strength,
your enemies will cringe before you.
4 All the earth will bow in worship to you,
and sing praise to you.
They will sing the praise of your name.” Selah
5 Come and consider[c] the works of God;
he is awesome in his dealings[d] with the children of humankind.
6 He turned the sea into dry ground;
they passed through the river on foot.
There we rejoiced in him.
7 He rules by his might forever;
his eyes keep watch on the nations.
Do not let the rebellious exalt themselves.[e] Selah
8 Bless our God, O peoples,
and cause the sound of his praise to be heard,
9 the one who has kept our soul among the living,
and has not allowed our foot to slip.
10 For you have tested us, O God;
you have tried us as silver is tried.
11 You brought us into the net;
you placed a heavy burden[f] on our backs.
12 You let men[g] ride over our heads.
We went through fire and through water,
but you have brought us out to the place of abundance.[h]
13 I will come into your house[i] with burnt offerings.
I will pay to you my vows
14 that my lips uttered,
and my mouth spoke in my distress.
15 Burnt offerings of fat animals I will offer to you,
with the smoke of rams.
I will do[j] cattle with rams. Selah
16 Come and hear, all you God-fearers, and I will tell
what he has done for me.[k]
17 I called to him with my mouth,
and he was extolled with my tongue.[l]
18 If I had considered evil in my heart,
the Lord would not have listened.
19 However, God has listened;
he has attended to the sound of my prayer.
20 Blessed be God,
who has not turned aside my prayer,
or his loyal love from me.
