Gad and Reuben Inherit Gilead
32 The descendants[a] of Reuben and the descendants[b] of Gad had a very large number of livestock. And they saw the land of Jazer and the land of Gilead, and behold it was a place for livestock. 2 The descendants[c] of Gad and the descendants[d] of Reuben came, and they said to Moses and to Eleazar the priest and to the leaders of the community, saying, 3 “Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo, and Beon, 4 the land that Yahweh struck before the community of Israel, is a land of livestock, and your servants have livestock.” 5 They said, “If we have found favor in your sight,[e] let this land be given to your servants as property; do not lead us across the Jordan.”
6 But Moses said to the descendants[f] of Gad and to the descendants[g] of Reuben, “Will your brothers go to war while you yourselves live here? 7 Why are you discouraging the hearts of the Israelites[h] from crossing into the land that Yahweh gave to them? 8 This is what your fathers did when I sent them from Kadesh Barnea to see the land. 9 When they went up to the valley[i] of Eshcol and saw the land, they discouraged the heart of the Israelites[j] so that they did not come to the land that Yahweh gave to them. 10 So Yahweh’s anger burned[k] on that day, and he swore an oath, saying, 11 ‘The men who went up from Egypt, from those twenty years old[l] and above, will not see the land that I swore with an oath to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob because they have not wholly followed me, 12 except Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua son of Nun, because they followed Yahweh wholly.’ 13 And Yahweh became angry,[m] and he made them wander in the desert forty years until the entire generation who did evil in the sight of Yahweh[n] had died.[o] 14 Behold, you stand in the place of your fathers, a brood of sinful men, to increase still more Yahweh’s fierce anger[p] against Israel. 15 If you turn from following him, he will again abandon them[q] in the wilderness, and you would have destroyed all these people.”
16 They came near to him and said, “We will build sheep pens here for the flock of our livestock and cities for our little children; 17 but we ourselves will become armed and ready before the Israelites[r] until we have brought them to their place, and our little children will live in the fortified cities because of the inhabitants of the land. 18 We will not return to our houses until the Israelites[s] each obtain their[t] inheritance for themselves. 19 For we will not take possession with them from across the Jordan and beyond because our inheritance has come to us from across the Jordan to the east.”
20 So Moses said to them, “If you do this thing, if you arm yourselves before[u] Yahweh for the war, 21 and everyone of you armed cross the Jordan before[v] Yahweh until he has driven out his enemies from before him, 22 and the land is subdued before[w] Yahweh, then afterward you will return and be free of obligation from Yahweh and from Israel, and this land will be your property before[x] Yahweh. 23 But if you do not do so, behold, you have sinned against Yahweh, and know that your sin will find you. 24 Build for yourselves cities for your little children and sheep pens for your flocks; what has gone out from your mouth you will do.”
25 So the descendants[y] of Gad and the descendants[z] of Reuben said to Moses, saying, “Your servants will do just as my lord commands. 26 Our little children, our wives, our livestock, and all of our animals[aa] will remain[ab] in the cities of Gilead, 27 but your servants, everyone who is armed for battle, will cross over before[ac] Yahweh to the war, just as my lord says.”
28 So Moses commanded them, Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the heads of the families[ad] of the tribes of the Israelites.[ae] 29 Moses said to them, “If the descendants[af] of Gad and the descendants[ag] of Reuben, everyone who is armed for the war, cross over the Jordan before[ah] Yahweh, and the land is subdued before you, you will give them the land of Gilead as property. 30 But if they will not cross over with you armed, they will acquire land in your midst in Canaan.” 31 The descendants[ai] of Gad and the descendants of Reuben answered and said, “What Yahweh has commanded your servants, we will do. 32 We ourselves will cross over armed before[aj] Yahweh to the land of Canaan, and the property of our inheritance will remain with us beyond the Jordan.”
33 So Moses gave to them, to the descendants[ak] of Gad and the descendants[al] of Reuben, and to half of the tribe of Joseph’s son Manasseh, the kingdom of Sihon the king of Amorites and the kingdom of Og the king of the Bashan, the land with its cities and their territories, the cities of the surrounding land. 34 The descendants[am] of Gad rebuilt Dibon, Ataroth, and Aroer, 35 and Atroth Shophan, Jazer, and Jogbehah, 36 and Beth Nimrah and Beth Haran, the cities of Mibzar, and the sheep pens for flocks. 37 The descendants[an] of Reuben rebuilt Heshbon, Elealeh, and Kiriathaim, 38 and Nebo, Baal Meon (their names[ao] were changed), and Sibmah, and they renamed[ap] the cities that they rebuilt. 39 The descendants[aq] of Makir son of Manasseh went to Gilead, and they captured it and drove out the Amorites[ar] who were in it. 40 So Moses gave Gilead to Makir son of Manasseh, and he lived in it. 41 And Jair son of Manasseh went and captured their unwalled villages, and he called them Havvoth Jair. 42 Nobah went and captured Kenath and its villages, and he called it Nobah after his own name.
The Travels Are Recounted
33 These were the journeys of the Israelites,[as] who went out from the land of Egypt according to their divisions, by the hand of Moses and Aaron. 2 Moses wrote down their movements according to their journeys on the command of Yahweh, and these are their journeys according to their movements. 3 They set out from Rameses on the first month, on the fifteenth day of the first month; on the next day after the Passover the Israelites[at] went out boldly[au] in the sight[av] of all the Egyptians 4 while the Egyptians were burying all the firstborn among them whom Yahweh struck. Yahweh also executed punishments among their gods.
5 Then the Israelites[aw] set out from Rameses, and they camped in Succoth. 6 They journeyed from Succoth and camped in Etham, which is on the edge of the desert. 7 Then they set out from Etham and returned to Pi-Hahiroth, which faces Baal Zephon, and they camped before Migdol. 8 They set out from Pi-Hahiroth and went through the midst of the sea into the desert; and they went a journey of three days into the desert of Etham and camped at Marah. 9 They set out from Marah and came to Elim, and in Elim there were twelve springs of water and seventy palm trees, and they camped there. 10 They set out from Elim, and they camped at the Red Sea.[ax] 11 They set out from the Red Sea[ay] and camped at the desert of Sin. 12 They set out from the desert of Sin and camped at Dophkah. 13 They set out from Dophkah and camped at Alush. 14 They set out from Alush and encamped at Rephidim; and it was there that the people had no water to drink. 15 They set out from Rephidim and camped in the desert of Sinai. 16 The set out from the desert of Sinai and camped at Kibroth Hattaavah.
17 They set out from Kibroth Hattaavah and camped at Hazeroth. 18 They set out from Hazeroth and camped at Rithmah. 19 They set out from Rithmah and camped at Rimmon Perez. 20 They set out from Rimmon Perez and camped at Libnah. 21 They set out from Libnah and camped at Rissah. 22 They set out from Rissah and camped at Kehelathah. 23 They set out from Kehelathah and camped at Mount Shapher. 24 They set out from Mount Shapher and camped at Haradah. 25 They set out from Haradah and camped at Makheloth. 26 They set out from Makheloth and camped at Tahath. 27 They set out from Tahath and camped at Terah. 28 They set out from Terah and camped at Mithcah. 29 They set out from Mithcah and camped at Hashmonah. 30 They set out from Hashmonah and camped at Moserah. 31 They set out from Moserah and camped at Bene-Jaakan. 32 They set out from Bene-Jaakan and camped at Hor Haggidgad. 33 They set out from Hor Haggidgad and camped at Jotbathah. 34 They set out from Jotbathah and camped at Abronah. 35 They set out from Abronah and camped at Ezion Geber. 36 They set out from Ezion Geber and camped in the desert of Zin, that is, Kadesh. 37 They set out from Kadesh and camped at Mount Hor, at the edge of the land of Edom.
38 Aaron the priest went up to Mount Hor at the command[az] of Yahweh, and he died there in the fortieth year after the Israelites[ba] had gone out from the land of Egypt, in the fifth month on the first day of the month. 39 Aaron was one hundred and twenty-three years old when he died on Mount Hor.
Jesus Teaches and Heals Many in Capernaum
31 And he came down to Capernaum, a town of Galilee, and was teaching them on the Sabbath. 32 And they were astounded at his teaching, because he spoke[a] with authority.
33 And in the synagogue there was a man who had the spirit of an unclean demon,[b] and he cried out with a loud voice, 34 “Ha! Leave us alone,[c] Jesus the Nazarene! Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!” 35 And Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent and come out of him!” And after[d] throwing him down in their midst, the demon came out of him without hurting him at all. 36 And amazement came upon them all, and they began to talk[e] with one another, saying, “What word[f] is this? For he commands the unclean spirits with authority and power, and they come out!” 37 And news about him went out into every place of the surrounding region.
38 And after he[g] set out from the synagogue, he went into Simon’s house. And Simon’s mother-in-law was afflicted with a high fever, and they asked him on behalf of her. 39 And he stood over her and[h] rebuked the fever, and it left her. And immediately she got up and[i] began to serve[j] them.
40 Now as[k] the sun was setting, all who had those who were sick with various diseases brought them to him, and placing his[l] hands on every one of them, he healed them. 41 And demons also were coming out of many, crying out and saying, “You are the Son of God!” And he rebuked them[m] and did not permit them to speak, because they knew that he was the Christ.[n]
42 And when it[o] was day, he departed and[p] went to an isolated place. And the crowds were seeking him, and came to him and were trying to prevent him from departing from them. 43 But he said to them, “It is necessary for me to proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns also, because I was sent for this purpose. 44 And he was preaching in the synagogues of Judea.
Jesus Calls His First Disciples
5 Now it happened that while the crowd was pressing around him and hearing the word of God, he was standing beside the lake of Gennesaret,[q] 2 and he saw two boats there beside the lake, but the fishermen had gotten out of them and[r] were washing their nets. 3 And he got into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, and[s] asked him to put out from the land a little. And he sat down and[t] began to teach[u] the crowds from the boat. 4 And when he stopped speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch.” 5 And Simon answered and[v] said, “Master, although we[w] worked hard through the whole night, we caught nothing. But at your word I will let down the nets.” 6 And when they[x] did this, they caught a very large number of fish, and their nets began to tear.[y] 7 And they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and[z] help them, and they came and filled both the boats so that they began to sink. 8 And when he[aa] saw it,[ab] Simon Peter fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, Lord, because I am a sinful man!”[ac] 9 For amazement had seized him and all those who were with him at the catch of fish that they had caught, 10 and so also were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were business partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid! From now on you will be catching people!” 11 And after they[ad] brought their[ae] boats to the land, they left everything and[af] followed him.
A Plea for Divine Retribution
For the music director. A psalm of David.[a]
64 Hear my voice, O God, in my lamenting.
Preserve my life from the fear of the enemy.
2 Hide me from the secret plots[b] of evildoers,
from the unrest of those who do iniquity,
3 who sharpen their tongue like a sword.
They bend their bow to shoot their arrows—bitter words,
4 to shoot from[c] their[d] hiding places at the blameless.
Suddenly they shoot at him and do not fear.
5 They encourage themselves in the evil matter.
They talk of secretly laying snares.
They say, “Who will see them?”
6 They carefully plot[e] injustices saying,
“We have perfected the perfect plot!”[f]
Both the inner thought[g] and heart of a man are deep.
7 But God will shoot them;
with an arrow they will suddenly be wounded.
8 [h] And they who would cause him[i] to stumble,
their own tongue will be against them.
All who gaze on them will shake.[j]
9 And then[k] all men[l] will fear,
and will declare the working of God,
and will understand his doing.
10 The righteous will rejoice in Yahweh and take refuge in him,
and all the upright in heart will boast.
