Job Chides His Accusers
12 Then Job [a]responded,
2 “Truly then (A)you are the people,
And with you wisdom will die!
3 “But (B)I have intelligence as well as you;
I am not inferior to you.
And [b]who does not know such things as these?
4 “I am a (C)joke to [c]my friends,
The one who called on God and He answered him;
The just and (D)blameless man is a joke.
5 “[d]He who is at ease holds calamity in contempt,
As prepared for those whose feet slip.
6 “The (E)tents of the destroyers prosper,
And those who provoke God (F)are secure,
[e]Whom God brings (G)into their power.
7 “But now ask the beasts, and let them teach you;
And the birds of the heavens, and let them tell you.
8 “Or speak to the earth, and let it teach you;
And let the fish of the sea declare to you.
9 “Who among all these does not know
That (H)the hand of the Lord has done this,
10 (I)In whose hand is the life of every living thing,
And (J)the breath of all mankind?
11 “Does not (K)the ear test words,
As the palate [f]tastes its food?
12 “Wisdom is with (L)aged men,
With [g]long life is understanding.
Job Speaks of the Power of God
13 “With Him are (M)wisdom and (N)might;
To Him belong counsel and (O)understanding.
14 “Behold, He (P)tears down, and it cannot be rebuilt;
He [h](Q)imprisons a man, and [i]there can be no release.
15 “Behold, He (R)restrains the waters, and they dry up;
And He (S)sends them out, and they [j]inundate the earth.
16 “With Him are strength and sound wisdom,
The (T)misled and the misleader belong to Him.
17 “He makes (U)counselors walk [k]barefoot
And makes fools of (V)judges.
18 “He (W)loosens the [l]bond of kings
And binds their loins with a girdle.
19 “He makes priests walk [m]barefoot
And overthrows (X)the secure ones.
20 “He deprives the trusted ones of speech
And (Y)takes away the discernment of the elders.
21 “He (Z)pours contempt on nobles
And (AA)loosens the belt of the strong.
22 “He (AB)reveals mysteries from the darkness
And brings the deep darkness into light.
23 “He (AC)makes the nations great, then destroys them;
He [n]enlarges the nations, then leads them away.
24 “He (AD)deprives of intelligence the chiefs of the earth’s people
And makes them wander in a pathless waste.
25 “They (AE)grope in darkness with no light,
And He makes them (AF)stagger like a drunken man.
Job Says His Friends’ Proverbs Are Ashes
13 “(AG)Behold, my eye has seen all this,
My ear has heard and understood it.
2 “(AH)What you know I also know;
I am not inferior to you.
3 “But (AI)I would speak to [o]the Almighty,
And I desire to (AJ)argue with God.
4 “But you (AK)smear with lies;
You are all (AL)worthless physicians.
5 “O that you would (AM)be completely silent,
And that it would become your wisdom!
6 “Please hear my argument
And listen to the contentions of my lips.
7 “Will you (AN)speak what is unjust for God,
And speak what is deceitful for Him?
8 “Will you (AO)show partiality for Him?
Will you contend for God?
9 “Will it be well when He examines you?
Or (AP)will you deceive Him as one deceives a man?
10 “He will surely reprove you
If you secretly (AQ)show partiality.
11 “Will not (AR)His [p]majesty terrify you,
And the dread of Him fall on you?
12 “Your memorable sayings are proverbs of ashes,
Your defenses are defenses of clay.
Job Is Sure He Will Be Vindicated
13 “(AS)Be silent before me so that I may speak;
Then let come on me what may.
14 “Why should I take my flesh in my teeth
And (AT)put my life in my [q]hands?
15 “(AU)Though He slay me,
I will hope in Him.
Nevertheless I (AV)will argue my ways [r]before Him.
16 “This also will be my (AW)salvation,
For (AX)a godless man may not come before His presence.
17 “Listen carefully to my speech,
And let my declaration fill your ears.
18 “Behold now, I have (AY)prepared my case;
I know that (AZ)I will be vindicated.
19 “(BA)Who will contend with me?
For then I would be silent and (BB)die.
20 “Only two things do not do to me,
Then I will not hide from Your face:
21 (BC)Remove Your [s]hand from me,
And let not the dread of You terrify me.
22 “Then call, and (BD)I will answer;
Or let me speak, then reply to me.
23 “(BE)How many are my iniquities and sins?
Make known to me my [t]rebellion and my sin.
24 “Why do You (BF)hide Your face
And consider me (BG)Your enemy?
25 “Will You cause a (BH)driven leaf to tremble?
Or will You pursue the dry (BI)chaff?
26 “For You write (BJ)bitter things against me
And (BK)make me to inherit the iniquities of my youth.
27 “You (BL)put my feet in the stocks
And watch all my paths;
You [u]set a limit for the soles of my feet,
28 While [v]I am decaying like a (BM)rotten thing,
Like a garment that is moth-eaten.
Job Speaks of the Finality of Death
14 “(BN)Man, who is born of woman,
Is [w]short-lived and (BO)full of turmoil.
2 “(BP)Like a flower he comes forth and withers.
He also flees like (BQ)a shadow and does not remain.
3 “You also (BR)open Your eyes on him
And (BS)bring [x]him into judgment with Yourself.
4 “(BT)Who can make the clean out of the unclean?
No one!
5 “Since his days are determined,
The (BU)number of his months is with You;
And his limits You have [y]set so that he cannot pass.
6 “(BV)Turn Your gaze from him that he may [z]rest,
Until he [aa]fulfills his day like a hired man.
7 “For there is hope for a tree,
When it is cut down, that it will sprout again,
And its shoots will not [ab]fail.
8 “Though its roots grow old in the ground
And its stump dies in the dry soil,
9 At the scent of water it will flourish
And put forth sprigs like a plant.
10 “But (BW)man dies and lies prostrate.
Man (BX)expires, and where is he?
11 “As (BY)water [ac]evaporates from the sea,
And a river becomes parched and dried up,
12 So (BZ)man lies down and does not rise.
Until the heavens are no longer,
[ad]He will not awake nor be aroused out of [ae]his sleep.
13 “Oh that You would hide me in [af]Sheol,
That You would conceal me (CA)until Your wrath returns to You,
That You would set a limit for me and remember me!
14 “If a man dies, will he live again?
All the days of my struggle I will wait
Until my change comes.
15 “You will call, and I will answer You;
You will long for (CB)the work of Your hands.
16 “For now You (CC)number my steps,
You do not (CD)observe my sin.
17 “My transgression is (CE)sealed up in a bag,
And You [ag]wrap up my iniquity.
18 “But the falling mountain [ah]crumbles away,
And the rock moves from its place;
19 Water wears away stones,
Its torrents wash away the dust of the earth;
So You (CF)destroy man’s hope.
20 “You forever overpower him and he (CG)departs;
You change his appearance and send him away.
21 “His sons achieve honor, but (CH)he does not know it;
Or they become insignificant, but he does not perceive it.
22 “But his [ai]body pains him,
And he mourns only for himself.”
Eliphaz Says Job Presumes Much
15 Then Eliphaz the Temanite [aj]responded,
2 “Should a wise man answer with windy knowledge
(CI)And fill [ak]himself with the east wind?
3 “Should he argue with useless talk,
Or with words which are not profitable?
4 “Indeed, you do away with [al]reverence
And hinder meditation before God.
5 “For (CJ)your guilt teaches your mouth,
And you choose the language of (CK)the crafty.
6 “Your (CL)own mouth condemns you, and not I;
And your own lips testify against you.
7 “Were you the first man to be born,
Or (CM)were you brought forth before the hills?
8 “Do you hear the (CN)secret counsel of God,
And limit wisdom to yourself?
9 “(CO)What do you know that we do not know?
What do you understand that [am]we do not?
10 “Both the (CP)gray-haired and the aged are among us,
Older than your father.
11 “Are (CQ)the consolations of God too small for you,
Even the (CR)word spoken gently with you?
12 “Why does your (CS)heart carry you away?
And why do your eyes flash,
13 That you should turn your spirit against God
And allow such words to go out of your mouth?
14 “What is man, that (CT)he should be pure,
Or (CU)he who is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?
15 “Behold, He puts no trust in His (CV)holy ones,
And the (CW)heavens are not pure in His sight;
16 How much less one who is (CX)detestable and corrupt,
Man, who (CY)drinks iniquity like water!
What Eliphaz Has Seen of Life
17 “I will tell you, listen to me;
And what I have seen I will also declare;
18 What wise men have told,
And have not concealed from (CZ)their fathers,
19 To whom alone the land was given,
And no alien passed among them.
20 “The wicked man writhes (DA)in pain all his days,
And [an]numbered are the years (DB)stored up for the ruthless.
21 “[ao]Sounds of (DC)terror are in his ears;
(DD)While at peace the destroyer comes upon him.
22 “He does not believe that he will (DE)return from darkness,
And he is destined for (DF)the sword.
23 “He wanders about for food, saying, ‘Where is it?’
He knows that a day of (DG)darkness is [ap]at hand.
24 “Distress and anguish terrify him,
They overpower him like a king ready for the attack,
25 Because he has stretched out his hand against God
And conducts himself (DH)arrogantly against [aq]the Almighty.
26 “He rushes [ar]headlong at Him
With [as]his massive shield.
27 “For he has (DI)covered his face with his fat
And made his thighs heavy with flesh.
28 “He has (DJ)lived in desolate cities,
In houses no one would inhabit,
Which are destined to become [at]ruins.
29 “He (DK)will not become rich, nor will his wealth endure;
And his grain will not bend down to the ground.
30 “He will (DL)not [au]escape from darkness;
The (DM)flame will wither his shoots,
And by (DN)the breath of His mouth he will go away.
31 “Let him not (DO)trust in emptiness, deceiving himself;
For emptiness will be his [av]reward.
32 “It will be accomplished (DP)before his time,
And his palm (DQ)branch will not be green.
33 “He will drop off his unripe grape like the vine,
And will (DR)cast off his flower like the olive tree.
34 “For the company of (DS)the godless is barren,
And fire consumes (DT)the tents of [aw]the corrupt.
35 “They (DU)conceive [ax]mischief and bring forth iniquity,
And their [ay]mind prepares deception.”
29 Otherwise, what will those do who are baptized for the dead? If the dead are not raised at all, why then are they baptized for them? 30 Why are we also (A)in danger every hour? 31 I affirm, brethren, by the boasting in you which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, (B)I die daily. 32 If [a]from human motives I (C)fought with wild beasts at (D)Ephesus, what does it profit me? If the dead are not raised, (E)let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die. 33 (F)Do not be deceived: “Bad company corrupts good morals.” 34 (G)Become sober-minded [b]as you ought, and stop sinning; for some have (H)no knowledge of God. (I)I speak this to your shame.
35 But (J)someone will say, “How are (K)the dead raised? And with what kind of body do they come?” 36 (L)You fool! That which you (M)sow does not come to life unless it dies; 37 and that which you sow, you do not sow the body which is to be, but a bare grain, perhaps of wheat or of [c]something else. 38 But God gives it a body just as He wished, and (N)to each of the seeds a body of its own. 39 All flesh is not the same flesh, but there is one flesh of men, and another flesh of beasts, and another flesh of birds, and another of fish. 40 There are also heavenly bodies and earthly bodies, but the glory of the heavenly is one, and the glory of the earthly is another. 41 There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars; for star differs from star in glory.
42 (O)So also is the resurrection of the dead. It is sown [d](P)a perishable body, it is raised [e](Q)an imperishable body; 43 it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in (R)glory; it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power; 44 it is sown a (S)natural body, it is raised a (T)spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body. 45 So also it is written, “The first (U)man, Adam, became a living soul.” The (V)last Adam became a (W)life-giving spirit. 46 However, the spiritual is not first, but the natural; then the spiritual. 47 The first man is (X)from the earth, [f](Y)earthy; the second man is from heaven. 48 As is the earthy, so also are those who are earthy; and as is the heavenly, (Z)so also are those who are heavenly. 49 Just as we have (AA)borne the image of the earthy, [g]we (AB)will also bear the image of the heavenly.
The Mystery of Resurrection
50 Now I say this, brethren, that (AC)flesh and blood cannot (AD)inherit the kingdom of God; nor does [h]the perishable inherit [i](AE)the imperishable. 51 Behold, I tell you a (AF)mystery; we will not all sleep, but we will all be (AG)changed, 52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet; for (AH)the trumpet will sound, and (AI)the dead will be raised [j]imperishable, and (AJ)we will be changed. 53 For this [k]perishable must put on [l](AK)the imperishable, and this (AL)mortal must put on immortality. 54 But when this [m]perishable will have put on [n]the imperishable, and this mortal will have put on immortality, then will come about the saying that is written, “(AM)Death is swallowed up in victory. 55 (AN)O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” 56 The sting of (AO)death is sin, and (AP)the power of sin is the law; 57 but (AQ)thanks be to God, who gives us the (AR)victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
58 (AS)Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in (AT)the work of the Lord, knowing that your toil is not in vain in the Lord.
The Vanity of Life.
For the choir director, for [a]Jeduthun. A Psalm of David.
39 I said, “I will (A)guard my ways
That I (B)may not sin with my tongue;
I will guard (C)my mouth as with a muzzle
While the wicked are in my presence.”
2 I was (D)mute [b]and silent,
I [c]refrained even from good,
And my [d]sorrow grew worse.
3 My (E)heart was hot within me,
While I was musing the fire burned;
Then I spoke with my tongue:
4 “Lord, make me to know (F)my end
And what is the extent of my days;
Let me know how (G)transient I am.
5 “Behold, You have made (H)my days as handbreadths,
And my (I)lifetime as nothing in Your sight;
Surely every man [e]at his best is [f]a mere (J)breath. [g]Selah.
6 “Surely every man (K)walks about as [h]a phantom;
Surely they make an (L)uproar for nothing;
He (M)amasses riches and does not know who will gather them.
7 “And now, Lord, for what do I wait?
My (N)hope is in You.
8 “(O)Deliver me from all my transgressions;
Make me not the (P)reproach of the foolish.
9 “I have become (Q)mute, I do not open my mouth,
Because it is (R)You who have done it.
10 “(S)Remove Your plague from me;
Because of (T)the opposition of Your hand I am [i]perishing.
11 “With (U)reproofs You chasten a man for iniquity;
You (V)consume as a moth what is precious to him;
Surely (W)every man is a mere breath. Selah.
