Psalm 2

The Messiah’s Reign

Why are nations in tumult,
and countries plotting[a] in vain?[b]
The kings of the earth establish themselves,
and the rulers conspire[c] together
against Yahweh and his anointed:
“Let us tear off their bonds,
and cast their cords from us!”
He who sits enthroned in the heavens laughs.
The Lord derides them.
Then he speaks to them in his wrath,
and in his fury he terrifies them:
“But as for me, I have set my king
on Zion, my holy mountain.”
I will tell the decree;
Yahweh said to me:
“You are my son;
today I have begotten you.
Ask from me and I will make the nations your heritage,
and your possession the ends of the earth.
You will break them with an iron rod.
Like a potter’s vessel you will shatter them.”
10 So then, O kings, be wise.
Be warned, O rulers of the earth.
11 Serve Yahweh with fear,
and rejoice with trembling.
12 Kiss the Son
lest he be angry and you perish on the way,
for his anger burns quickly.
Blessed are all who take refuge in him.

Psalm 85

Hope in God’s Future Help

For the music director. Of the sons of Korah. A psalm.[a]

85 O Yahweh, you favored your land.
You restored the fortunes[b] of Jacob.
You took away the guilt[c] of your people;
you covered all their sin. Selah
You withdrew all your wrath;
you turned from your burning anger.
Restore us, O God of our salvation,
and annul your vexation with us.
Will you be angry against us forever?
Will you prolong your anger generation after generation?
Will you not again revive us,
that your people might rejoice in you?
Show us, O Yahweh, your loyal love,
and grant us your salvation.
I will hear what God, Yahweh, will speak,
because he will speak peace
to his people, even his faithful ones,[d]
but let them not return to folly.
Surely his salvation is near for those who fear him,
that glory may abide in our land.
10 Loyal love and faithfulness[e] will meet one another;
righteousness and peace will kiss.
11 Faithfulness[f] will sprout from the ground,
and righteousness will look down from heaven.
12 Yes, Yahweh will give what is good,
and our land will give its produce.
13 Righteousness will go before him,
and it will make his steps a pathway.

Psalm 110

Yahweh Gives Authority to His Messiah

Of David. A psalm.[a]

110 A declaration of Yahweh to my lord,
“Sit at my right hand
until I make your enemies your footstool.”
Yahweh will send out your mighty scepter from Zion;
rule in the midst of your enemies.
Your people will volunteer[b] in the day of your power.[c]
In holy splendor, from the womb of the dawn,
you will have the dew of your youth.[d]
Yahweh has sworn and he will not change his mind,
“You are a priest forever
according to the manner of Melchizedek.”
O Lord, at your right hand
he will shatter kings in the day of his anger.
He will judge among the nations;
he will fill them with corpses.
He will shatter the rulers[e] of many countries.
He will drink from the stream by the road;
therefore he will lift up his head.

Psalm 132

Yahweh Dwells in Zion

A song of ascents.[a]

132 O Yahweh, remember with regard to David
all his affliction.[b]
How he swore to Yahweh,
he vowed to the Mighty One of Jacob:
“I will not enter into the tent of my house,
I will not go up to the couch of my bed,
I will give no sleep to my eyes,
no slumber to my eyelids,
until I find a place for Yahweh,
a dwelling place for the Mighty One of Jacob.”
Look, we heard of it in Ephrathah;
we found her in the fields of Jaar.[c]
Let us go to his dwelling places;[d]
Let us worship at his footstool.
Arise, O Yahweh, to your resting place,
you and your mighty ark.
Let your priests clothe themselves with righteousness,
and let your faithful sing for joy.
10 For the sake of your servant David,
do not turn away the face of your anointed one.
11 Yahweh swore in truth to David;
he will not turn back from it.
“One from the fruit of your body[e]
I will set on your throne.
12 If your sons will heed my covenant
and my testimonies that I will teach them,
their sons also forever
will sit on your throne.”
13 For Yahweh has chosen Zion;
he has desired it for his habitation.
14 “This is my resting place forever;
here I will dwell, for I have desired it.
15 I will bless its provisions abundantly;
I will satisfy its poor with bread.
16 I will also clothe its priests with salvation,
and its faithful will shout exuberantly for joy.
17 There I will cause a horn to grow for David;
I will set a lamp for my anointed one.
18 I will clothe his enemies with shame,
but on him his crown will flourish.”[f]

Zechariah 2:10-13

10 Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion, for look, I am coming and I will dwell in your midst,” declares[a] Yahweh. 11 “Many nations will join themselves to Yahweh on that day, and they will be my people, and I will dwell in your midst. And you will know that Yahweh of hosts has sent me to you. 12 And Yahweh will inherit Judah as his portion in the holy land,[b] and he will again choose Jerusalem. 13 Be silent, all people,[c] before Yahweh, for he is roused from his holy dwelling.”[d]

1 John 4:7-16

God’s Love Revealed

Dear friends, let us love one another, because love is from God, and everyone who loves has been fathered by God and knows God. The one who does not love does not know God, because God is love. By this the love of God is revealed in us: that God sent his one and only Son into the world in order that we may live through him. 10 In this is love: not that we have loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation[a] for our sins.

11 Dear friends, if God loved us in this way, we also ought to love one another. 12 No one has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God resides in us and his love is perfected in us. 13 By this we know that we reside in him and he in us: that[b] he has given us of his Spirit. 14 And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son to be the Savior of the world.

15 Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God resides in him and he in God. 16 And we have come to know and have believed the love that God has in us. God is love, and the one who resides in love resides in God, and God resides in him.

John 3:31-36

31 The one who comes from above is over all. The one who is from the earth is from the earth and speaks from the earth; the one who comes from heaven is over all. 32 What he has seen and heard, this he testifies, and no one accepts his testimony. 33 The one who accepts his testimony has attested that God is true. 34 For the one whom God sent speaks the words of God, for he does not give the Spirit by measure. 35 The Father loves the Son and has given all things into his hand. 36 The one who believes in the Son has eternal life, but the one who disobeys the Son will not see life—but the wrath of God remains on him.[a]
